User questions & answers
Question: | Where is it made |
Answer: | Blade forged in Japan; knife components assembled in USA however, that is not stamped anywhere on mine. |
Question: | Did they fix the spring breakage issue in this model |
Answer: | As far as I know the problem has been resolved. I haven't had any problems with mine |
Question: | is this the xl version |
Answer: | Mine is not the Extra Long model with the 4.18" blade. It is the black standard with the 3.18" blade. I have had very good service with it. No complaints. The blade holds a nice edge and requires minimal attention. I carry it everyday because it is slim, fits my pocket easily, is easy to reach down, remove from your pocket and have it ready for use. The spring assist is legal here in Florida, since it is strictly an assist, does not pop the blade completely out of the handle. It requires your participation in the event. I believe it is a good deal for the price. |
Question: | Is this the new model slim jim |
Answer: | Yes, very slim knife and very sharp. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How does this knife compare to a Ka-Bar |
Answer: | Ka Bars are made in the USA by skilled craftsmen, and SOG is made in China. The tip is far more likely to break on the SOG, and unless you're cutting mostly rope and man made materials the serrations don't help. It's mostly a fighting knife, and won't stand up to the digging, chopping, batoning, and prying tasks you may be faced with in a survival situation. KaBar, Esee, Tops, Gerber Strongarm and other American brands have proven in test after test to be up for any task you throw at them, and virtually indestructible. I would take an Esee6, a KaBar Turok, or a BK7 over that SOG all day every day! Another great option in that price range would be a Mora Garberg! You can not go wrong with a Morakniv! |
Question: | What is a good alternate for this knife? (lower price and good quality) Thanks |
Answer: | KaBar Jarosz Turok or Gerber LMF II for multi purpose tactical/survival knives. For a smaller version go with the Gerber Strongarm. All three are battle ready, and have fantastic sheaths! Or if you're just looking for a fighting knife go with the KaBars. The original and still the best! All the KaBar Becker's are great if you want more of a bushcraft/survival knife. AND every one I mentioned is American made and under $100. |
Question: | How would you compare this blade to Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate Survival Knife Pro Fixed Blade Straight Edge? I was thinking of getting either or |
Answer: | The Seal Team Elite is less expensive, has a serrated edge toward the handle, has a TiNi coated blade that doesn't reflect light, extended tang for breaking glass, and a nubbed spine for notching. Seal Team Elite has a 7-inch blade. Overall length: 12.3-inches, Weight: 10.3-ounces. The Ultimate Pro Fixed Blade has a 4.8-inch blade. Overall length: 10 inches, Weight: 13.7 ounces. It has a fire starter in the handle. I guess it depends on what type of "survival" you're interested in. |
Question: | Can a sog tactical be used for scuba diving. i want to make it my scuba knife |
Answer: | Although the blade is stainless, the AUS steel it is similar to 420 stainless. It is a martensitic stainless and will corrode, especially if it is left in its sheath after a dive. to prevent rusting the knife would need to be removed, rinsed, at left out of the sheath until it is dry.All that said, I have done over 500 salt water dives and I don't think this knife would make a good dive knife for the following reasons: 1.) It is too big (and heavy). Your knife should be carried where is is easily accessible and doesn't impact your movement (i.e. your belt). A knife should never be attached to the leg, if you get tangled or hung up you may not be able to reach your blade.2.) Probably the most important reason for carrying a knife is line cutting. The blade is partially serrated but is not a good line cutter. When diving, you should never move fishing lines with your hands but always with the hook of the line cutter in your knife. This minimizes the possibility of getting hooked or entangled.3.) I would never recommend a clip or drop point blade for diving, it is way too easy to puncture a hole in you suit. A knife for diving should have a dull flat tip.4.) At $90+ dollars, the knife costs about 10X more than you need to spend on a blade. My knife was made from a hardened stainless, 420 I think, paring knife purchased at the grocery store for about $7. I picked one with a large rubber handle, ground the tip off flat and then filed in a line cutter on the blade near the handle. The blade was maybe 3.5" long and it fit perfectly in its sheath and has never let me down. The only redeeming value of this knife for diving is so you could dig in if you got caught in a wicked ebb or flood current. Happy diving! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can the clip on this knife be repositioned |
Answer: | Maybe someone familiar with the knife assembly (build) can reposition it, but certainly not the average individual. |
Question: | Is this knife made in the USA |
Answer: | Taiwan |
Question: | is this the new version with improved opening tension |
Answer: | Don't think so. Bought one a month and a half ago and very hard to unlock to close and hard "breakaway" to open. |
Question: | does the blade spring open |
Answer: | The blade does open quickly, however it is not spring loaded. |
Question: | Does the blade lock |
Answer: | Blade locks..., that "smiley" slot is the lock release. |
Question: | Type of blade material |
Answer: | AUS 8 steel with a dlc like baked on coating that works very well to guard against rust. The steel is treated with a cryogenic heat process that's one of the best out there. Not a hard use knife per say but definitely a solid every day carry option that could be pushed into some hard use from time to time if the need were to arise. |
