These chisels are made by a small tool manufacturer in the Czech Republic and are of exceptional quality. The blades are made from fine-grained, nicely tempered chrome-manganese steel and hardened to Rc 59. The blades take and hold an excellent edge. The blades are precision ground and have an excellent finish. This is 3 pieces set contains 1/4, 1/2 and a 3/4 inch chisels. These Japanese style dovetail chisels are ground with acute 35 degree angles along both sides of the blade to provide excellent clearance into the tight corners of dovetails. The primary bevels are ground at 25 degrees. Blades are 5” long. Handles are stained beech and 5 1/4” long, 1 1/4” in diameter and have 2 antique brass ferrules. Overall lengths are 10 1/4”. They come in a wood presentation box.

Answer:	The progression of grits for sharpening chisels is normal, comparable to progressing with 80, 120, 220, 320 400 grit sand paper for wood. The progression provides a continuous refinement of the edge resulting in a sharper and cleaner edge. I personally use a progression of 600, 1200, 2000, 6000 nd 8000 grit water stones to sharpen my chisels.

Answer:	They are made in Japan. Great chisels, very little effort to sharpen and they seem to hold an edge very well. I'm happy with the purchase.

Answer:	Japanese chisels and plane irons are in essence a "sandwich" of hard and soft steels forged together. They tend to hold their edge better than western tools and as with any tool are best when kept honed each time used. The price is directly related to where and how they are produced with the more expensive attributable to master blacksmiths and tool makers.

Answer:	I don't know the overall Rockell value but be aware Japanese steel is layered with both harder and softer values which would comprise an average value. Consider them more appropriate for paring and light chopping. These are very sharp, nicely ground and very inexpensive for the Japaneses style. I wouldn't recommend for hard use but they are fantastic in the shop for fine and detail work without the normally very high price. Personally I like them.
