10 best japanese pole saws

Japanese pole saws, also known as Japanese pruning saws or pole pruners, are specialized cutting tools used for tree and shrub maintenance. These saws are designed to make high, precise cuts in branches and foliage that are otherwise difficult to reach without a ladder or climbing equipment. They are commonly used by gardeners, arborists, and landscapers for various pruning and trimming tasks. Here are some key features and characteristics of Japanese pole saws:

  1. Telescopic Design: Japanese pole saws typically have a telescopic pole that allows the user to extend the reach of the saw. This feature is essential for cutting branches high above the ground without the need for a ladder.

  2. Thin, Sharp Blade: These saws have a thin, sharp blade with specialized teeth designed for cutting through wood quickly and cleanly. The blades are often made from high-quality steel or carbon steel.

  3. Pull Stroke Cutting: Japanese saws, including pole saws, utilize a pull stroke cutting action, which means the blade cuts when pulled towards the user. This design results in more control and efficiency compared to push stroke saws commonly used in the West.

  4. Tapered Blade: The blade of a Japanese pole saw is often tapered, allowing for precision cuts and reduced friction during use. This design minimizes damage to the tree or shrub being pruned.

  5. Multiple Teeth Sizes: Different Japanese pole saws come with various tooth sizes and blade lengths, allowing users to choose the right tool for the specific pruning task at hand. Coarser teeth are suitable for thicker branches, while finer teeth are used for more delicate pruning.

  6. Lightweight and Ergonomic: Japanese pole saws are designed to be lightweight and ergonomic, reducing user fatigue during extended use.The handles are typically comfortable and easy to grip.

  7. Maintenance: Like any cutting tool, Japanese pole saws require maintenance to keep them in optimal condition. This includes keeping the blade sharp and periodically cleaning it to remove sap and debris.

  8. Safety Features: Many Japanese pole saws come with safety features such as locking mechanisms to secure the extended pole at the desired length and blade covers for safe storage.

  9. Versatility: Japanese pole saws can be used for various tasks beyond tree pruning, including cutting back overgrown bushes, shaping hedges, and reaching difficult-to-access areas.

  10. Quality and Brands: Some well-known brands that produce high-quality Japanese pole saws include Silky, ARS, and Samurai. These brands are known for their durable and reliable tools.

In summary, Japanese pole saws are specialized cutting tools designed for precision tree and shrub pruning. They are characterized by their telescopic design, sharp pull-stroke blades, and versatility in various outdoor maintenance tasks. These saws have gained popularity among professionals and enthusiasts for their efficiency and ease of use.

User questions & answers

Question: Does the blade come with a cover to protect the teeth when not using it
Answer: I have cut 4X4 pine post to shape legs..it works perfectly fine. Be slow and it does its own work with super finish
Question: id like to buy all the suizan product line are the blades replaceable ? if so where can i order the Blades
Answer: Japanese saws are normally much too thin to track in a western mitre box .Also western saws you can alter the cut but japanese saws you can not .so if you go off course with a japanese saw it is better to start a different cut line.
Question: Hope long do blades last
Answer: It says 22 crosscut and 9 rip in the description.
Question: What other saws should i buy for a started set in addition to this saw
Answer: I don't believe there are any manufacturer's instructions in English. I own 3 Gyokucho Japanese Saws (including this one), and I found the best info regarding the proper use of this saw on that popular video site. Just do a search for "Using Japanese Pull Saws", and you will find a plethora of instructional videos. These saws do require a certain technique that is vastly different from their western counterparts, but once you see it done, you'll be able to start practicing it. And once you get the hang of it (mostly just a light touch and the proper cutting angle), you will really enjoy using this saw.

Product description

Our EZ KUT Kamikaze Line is designed with maximum rigidity, ultimate lightness, and superior strength in mind. The EZ KUT 20’ Extending Pole Saw is no different. Crafted with a Japanese SK-4 carbon-enriched steel blade, the impulse hardened teeth are 3X stronger than conventional teeth. Aggressive tooth design with raker gaps and double hook makes those hard to reach cuts even easier. Hard chrome plated, it prevents rust and sap build up while the raker gaps allow for fast removal of cut material and help keep the blade cooler. Extending up to 20 feet, the oval aluminum tube with 4 reinforced locking positions makes reaching easier on your hands, wrists, shoulders and the rest of your muscles. The non-slip rubber coated handle offers excellent grip and helps reduce fatigue. The double locking system was designed for greater strength and durability while providing a smoother and safer telescopic extension. New integrated screw design avoids catching on other branches for easy in and out of your tree. Polyamide blade holder with a high strength design allows for less weight at the upper end of the telescoping pole, making sawing easier. The SK-4 carbon enriched blade is interchangeable with the Kamikaze 15’ Extending Pole Saw as well.

User questions & answers

Question: Does the 10-inch model have replacement curved blades as the 7-inch model seems to
Answer: It's not a true flush cutting saw but depending on the specific position of the cut it will get very close to a flush cut. I think Zona saws are great generally better than xacto. There are true flush cutting saws available.
Question: Is the blade flimsy or thick like a knife? Does the blade bend when cutting
Answer: The width of the saw blade from teeth to the edge of the rib of the saw is 1 1/8 inch.
Question: Where is it made
Answer: The ".010 - inch kerf" is your answer.
Question: OK how much does it realy weigh ??? one guy says less then a pound the other says 3 pounds. Does anybody know
Answer: I use mine both ways with good results, but predominantly for cross cutting. The stiffener on the back pretty much limits use for ripping. Not to disagree with Old Sailor who probably has better eyes, but under my magnifying lamp it really appears to be a ripcut with no set. Whichever, they are very good and useful saws. I have been using them for 35 or 40 years.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I use this saw for cutting kumiko strips
Answer: You should be able to buy it’s not that fine. I’d go with a finer larger dozuki for that. I’m a furniture maker and use kumiko for much of my work. If recomend getting one with at least 22tpi if you are doing very thin strips like 1-3mm thick 1/16-1/8”. If doing much thicker beginners work I’d say this would be fine just not large enough so still would recommend a larger one.
Question: Think this will cut a 4 x 8 bamboo strip sheet. It's flimsy since it's only 1/16 inch thick. lifting motion cause trouble cutting
Answer: Yes. This saw is VERY sharp.

  • JAPANESE STEEL: All SUIZAN Japanese saws are consisted of top quality japanese steel. It uses high quality Japanese steel, which makes cuts to be sharp.
  • MADE IN JAPAN: All SUIZAN products are manufactured in Japan by Japanese master craftsmen. With a history of over 100 years in making japanese hand tools, all of the process gone into making tools were completed in one of Japan’s towns known for their craft making tradition: Sanjō in Niigata

User questions & answers

Question: how many teeth per inch
Answer: 15 to 30 depending upon the style. T%here is a table on Amazon but it does not list the 7 inches but this puts you in the ballpark.
Question: I took down a pergola so now I have six 4” square posts protruding from the concrete patio. I'd like to cut them off flush. Will one of these do it
Answer: As described, the cutting edge is 7", but due to the spline on the back of the blade (you can see in the photo), the "working" edge is 6" which would limit you to a 2" cutting stroke. It would be tedious at best. I would think a better process for what you want to do is cut it close with any kind of saw available and then "grind" it flush with a shaper blade on a hand grinder. Maybe someone makes a bigger version of this saw. I would not attempt to do what you want with this specific saw.
Question: will the 7 inch blade fit the 6 inch saw
Answer: You would have to contact the SUIZAN web site.
Question: How do I purchase a replacement blade for this? The Amazon link from your website takes me to a new saw, not a replacement blade
Answer: I had the same problem at first. Easy way: type in Suizan replacement blades, and it takes you to the site, Multiple blade choices. Good saws. As fine as the teeth are I'm surprised they last as long as they do.
