7 best hand planers
A hand planer is a versatile hand tool used in woodworking for shaping, smoothing, and leveling surfaces, such as boards and lumber. Here's what you need to know about hand planers and their related accessories:
Basic Function: Hand planers are designed to remove thin layers of material from wooden surfaces to achieve a smooth and flat finish. They are commonly used for tasks like squaring edges, smoothing rough lumber, and reducing thickness.
Components: A typical hand planer consists of several key components:
- Blade or Iron: The blade or iron is the cutting component of the planer. It is usually made of high-carbon steel and needs to be sharp for effective planing.
- Frog: The frog is the part of the plane that holds the blade in place and allows for adjustments to control the depth of cut.
- Knob and Tote: These are the handles on the top and rear of the planer, providing a comfortable grip and control during use.
- Depth Adjustment Knob: This knob allows you to set the depth at which the blade cuts into the wood.
- Lateral Adjustment Lever: The lateral adjustment lever helps align the blade parallel to the sole of the plane.
Types of Hand Planers: There are several types of hand planers, including:
- Bench Planes: These are larger hand planes suitable for tasks like smoothing and jointing boards.
- Block Planes: Block planes are smaller and more portable, often used for fine detail work and chamfering edges.
- Jack Planes: Jack planes are medium-sized and versatile, suitable for a wide range of tasks.
- Smoothing Planes: These are small, fine-tuning planes used for achieving a glass-smooth surface.
- Low-Angle Planes: These planes have a lower blade angle, making them ideal for end grain and cross-grain work.
Accessories: Various accessories and replacement parts are available for hand planers, including replacement blades, sharpening stones, and honing guides. Proper maintenance and sharpening of the blade are essential for achieving clean and efficient cuts.
Technique: Using a hand planer effectively requires proper technique. The planer should be pushed forward with even pressure, taking shallow passes to avoid tear-out or gouging the wood.
Safety: Safety precautions are crucial when using hand planers. Always keep your hands and fingers away from the path of the blade, use sharp blades, and ensure a stable workpiece.
Applications: Hand planers are commonly used in woodworking projects such as making furniture, cabinetry, molding, and other carpentry tasks.
Cleaning and Maintenance: After use, it's important to clean the plane, remove any wood shavings or debris, and apply a light coat of oil to prevent rust on the metal parts.
Brands: There are various brands that manufacture hand planers, including Stanley, Lie-Nielsen, Veritas, and WoodRiver, among others. The quality and features of hand planers can vary by brand and model.
Hand planers are valuable tools for woodworkers and carpenters, allowing them to achieve precise and smooth finishes on wooden surfaces. Choosing the right type of hand planer and maintaining it properly is essential for successful woodworking projects.

Answer: | That’s what it is made for. The answer is yes |
Question: | If anyone has purchased the 4 3/8 inch model I would like to know what you think. I can't find one review on the 6534. Thanks |
Answer: | I'm very pleased with the 3 14 model that I purchased, but I don't have any personal experience with the 4 3/8 model. I did find a few reviews on the Home Depot web page specifically for the 4 3/8 and they all were very good. |
Question: | I am only assuming you can use this on boards wider than a 2x4 you would have to make multiple passes correct |
Answer: | Yeah you can plane wider boards. I have not gotten good results though - either due to my lack of experience or due to the limits of the product itself, not sure. I suggest practicing on some scrap first. |
