14 best rust oleum pool paints
Rust-Oleum is a well-known brand that offers a range of paint and coating products, including pool paints. Rust-Oleum pool paints are specifically designed for use in swimming pools to provide protection and a fresh, attractive appearance. Here's what you need to know about Rust-Oleum pool paints:
Types of Rust-Oleum Pool Paint:
- Rust-Oleum offers different types of pool paint, including epoxy-based and water-based options. The choice of paint type depends on factors such as the pool's surface, the previous coating (if any), and your preferences.
Epoxy Pool Paint:
- Epoxy pool paint is a durable and long-lasting option. It is ideal for use on previously coated pools and can adhere well to various surfaces, including concrete, plaster, and fiberglass. Epoxy pool paint provides excellent resistance to chemicals and UV rays.
Water-Based Pool Paint:
- Water-based pool paint is an environmentally friendly and easier-to-use option. It is suitable for both new and previously painted pools. While not as durable as epoxy, it offers good adhesion and is more forgiving during application.
Surface Preparation:
- Proper surface preparation is crucial for a successful pool paint job. This typically involves cleaning the pool surface thoroughly, removing any loose or flaking paint, and repairing any cracks or imperfections.
Priming:
- Depending on the condition of the pool surface and the type of paint you choose, you may need to apply a primer before painting. Primer ensures proper adhesion and a smoother finish.
Application:
- Follow the manufacturer's instructions for mixing and applying the pool paint. Use the recommended tools, such as rollers or brushes, to achieve an even coat. Most pool paints are designed for easy DIY application.
Drying and Curing:
- Allow the paint to dry and cure according to the specified drying times on the product label. This is crucial to ensure the paint sets properly and provides lasting protection.
Color Options:
- Rust-Oleum offers a variety of pool paint colors to suit your aesthetic preferences. You can choose from different shades to match your pool's surroundings or create a specific look.
Maintenance:
- To extend the life of your pool paint, regular maintenance is essential. This includes maintaining proper water chemistry, cleaning the pool regularly, and using appropriate pool chemicals.
Safety Considerations:
- When applying pool paint, it's important to follow safety guidelines, including proper ventilation and using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves and goggles.
Coverage and Usage:
- The coverage area and recommended usage may vary depending on the specific Rust-Oleum pool paint product you select. Refer to the product label or manufacturer's guidelines for this information.
Rust-Oleum pool paints are designed to enhance the appearance of your pool while providing protection against the harsh pool environment. Selecting the right type of paint and following proper application procedures will help you achieve a long-lasting and attractive finish for your swimming pool.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I also paint the bottom of my Starcraft aluminum boat with this? I need a white color. Thanks |
Answer: | 1. I don't think this is the right paint for aluminum or at a minimum, you will need a special "aluminum primer" paint (I think Rust-Oleum makes it). 2. I think for a boat that will stay in the water for much more than a typical 12 hour day each time it is used, you need professional equipment and paint to do the job, probably best left for marine shop. |
Question: | can u paint a car whith this paint |
Answer: | Yes! I've used the white and Oyster White, both successfully. The Oyster White is the closest match you can get to Old English White. The benefit of Topside is the UV protection. Be sure to cut the paint. I did 1 part paint, 3/4 part mineral spirits, and 1/4 part Penetrol (found at Home Depot, used to help the paint lay flatter). I applied the paint with a high density roller and foam brushes where the roller couldn't fit. Two coats, then wet sand with 600 wet/dry paper to remove Orange peel. Two coats, then sand with 800. Then two coats and wet sand with 1000. Two coats then wet sand with 1500. Two coats then wet sand with 2000. A lot of work, but worth the savings IMO. Good luck! There should be a picture of my car in the review section. This was my first attempt at it. I very recently used the Oyster White and others have been HIGHLY impressed. |
Question: | Can this paint be sprayed in an hvlp gun |
Answer: | Yes, according to directions on the container. Reduce with 10-15% xylene. Let dry 24 hours. Sand with #220 between coats. |
Question: | Has anyone used this as a ceiling paint for a shower? For the tub / shower surround? What were the results? Thank you |
Answer: | Yes! If you get the tub repair/ paint kit you're spending $30-$60 or more, and this does a better job at $15. Seriously can't beat it. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used alone with no other products |
Answer: | I did! I liked the results too! |
Question: | How shiny would the "gloss" of this product be |
Answer: | It’s not really shiny. It’s more of a matte finish. So I’d say a more satin finish. |
Question: | can I use a top coat |
Answer: | Yes, I’ve used a clear top coat many times but do not apply the top coat until the base paint is fully cured, I repeat fully cured. In my experience the base paint may orange peel when a top coat is applied at less than 4-5 days at 75F+ temps and |
Question: | Is this paint safe to paint a birdcage |
Answer: | Not if you want a bird to live there, in my opinion. Birds tend to use their beaks to maneuver in cages, even if they aren't clipped. Any paint will be ingested by their strong beaks when they do so. Your best bet is to talk to a veterinarian or a pet store and find out which are safe. Normally beyond paint choice, the cage goes through a heating process which makes it safe for birds. I have no idea where to go to get that done though, another question for your local veterinarian or pet store. Hopefully this is helpful. |

Product description
Rust-Oleum High Performance Epoxy Pool Paint is designed to provide long lasting protection for concrete, plaster, gunite, and fiberglass swimming pools, slides, and spas. While exposure to sunlight and certain interior lighting conditions causes fading and chalking of all epoxy type coatings, these changes are cosmetic in nature only and film integrity and performance will not be adversely affected. Epoxy coatings will yellow with age. This is most noticeable with interior applications of white or light colors which are not subjected to bleaching from sunlight. Do not use over chlorinated rubber, synthetic rubber, vinyl, or acrylic substrates. Product comes in a 2 gallon kit with 1 per case. Made in the USA.
User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be applied in layers(sanding in between)? I want to smooth a kind of rough fiberglass surface |
Answer: | We used the 5 gal. in one application. Once it is mixed it must be used. We painted layers until it started to gel. It said to let it cure for 7 days before we put water in the spa. We didn't try to apply another 5 gals. as it covered it fantastically. We are very satisfied. |
Question: | Does it work on concrete pool slides |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | Just to verify the epoxy paint is good for spa's |
Answer: | I would think that it would work. Is it fiberglass or concrete? When you order make sure it is the epoxy in the place of the acrylic (the acrylic doesn't work on fiberglass.) |
Question: | It says in the description it's good for pool slides. We have a fiberglass slide. The video says not to use on fiberglass. Which is correct |
Answer: | I used it on my fiberglass pool slide. It worked great. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this cover a wood surface |
Answer: | yes this galvanizing compound spray can be used to paint a wood surface. but it is intended to be sprayed on iron to protect it from rusting(oxidation). the spray contents are pure zinc metal powder mixed with a clear paint so it will adhere to the iron substrate. yes it can be used to paint wood but it is an expensive wood paint. it is also conductive because the zinc metal powder id electrically conductive. |
Question: | Can this be used on home hvac evaporator coils to extend the life of the unit |
Answer: | I wouldn’t. You most likely would change the heat transfer properties of the coil. Loss of efficiency in the system. |
Question: | If i'm using this on a galvanized trailer that has some rust, must I first convert the rust using a rust converter, then spray this on |
Answer: | The instructions only say to first remove any dirt, grease, oil, salt, and LOOSE RUST. It doesn't say you have to remove all the rust or convert it. That is part of why I got it. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Can you paint and/or bedliner ober this product |
Answer: | It's not really designed to be painted over. The finish is soft and easily scratched off. This stuff is designed to be left exposed to the elements. That's how it controls corrosion. |

Answer: | I wold not maybe some 3000 grit depending 5000 or higher or even lower grit. test in a small area underneath or a hidden area under the grip/stock if its super light rust might get it clean then oil it or get some blue steel for guns and re blue it. All depends on bad the rust is check inside the action barrel or better yet get a gun Smith to look at it there better ways than this rustoleum |
Question: | So how long can I leave this on my truck before painting |
Answer: | This stuff is very tough to sand it is almost like stand alone paint very durable kinda surprised me no fingerprint transfer after it dried so I dont think it matters much. I left mine on for a week before I got around to painting I just ran a clean new terrycloth towel & normal prep and my flat black topcoat is fine a year later |
Question: | Can I use it on my car's exhaust pipe |
Answer: | No. Your exhaust pipe gets very hot. You would need a primer that's designed for that heat. |

Question: | what is the dry and cure time for this metal primer before I put on the topside finish coat. Painting an old truck roof |

Question: | can this be used on the metal edging of an inground swimming pool |

Question: | Can it be used on the under side of a boat that does not stay in the water continuesly and is being towed ocassinally |
Answer: | Yes, I have a small boat and tow it to various lakes. It stays at home on the trailer weeks at a time. The paint stands up well. |
Question: | Which Rustoleum Primer is best for aluminum on the sides of a pontoon boat. Is it the Marine Primer for Metal or Latex Aluminum type |
Answer: | If using an oil based paint such as Rustoleum topside paint, oil based Marine Primer for metal would be best. If for some reason you are using Latex paint then Latex primer would be good. You will not get the gloss of topside paint with a Latex though. |
