12 best rated wood deck sealer
Rated wood deck sealers are products designed to protect and enhance the appearance of wooden decks. They are commonly used in the realm of stains, finishes, and sealers in the category of paint and wall treatments supplies within the field of tools and home improvement. Here is what you should know about them:
Purpose:
- Wood deck sealers are applied to wooden decks to protect them from various environmental factors, including UV rays, moisture, mildew, and foot traffic.
- They help extend the lifespan of the deck by preventing wood rot, warping, and decay.
Types:
- There are different types of deck sealers, including clear sealers, semi-transparent stains, and solid stains.
- Clear sealers provide minimal color enhancement while preserving the natural wood grain.
- Semi-transparent and solid stains offer varying levels of color coverage while providing protection.
Protection Levels:
- Wood deck sealers come with different protection levels, typically measured in years. For example, a "5-year sealer" is formulated to provide protection for up to five years before reapplication is needed.
- The protection level depends on factors like the type of wood, climate, and how well the deck is maintained.
Application:
- Deck sealers can be applied using brushes, rollers, or sprayers. Some can be sprayed or rolled directly onto the deck, while others may require more meticulous brush application.
- Proper preparation of the wood surface, including cleaning and sanding, is essential for the sealer to adhere effectively.
Maintenance:
- Regular maintenance, including cleaning and resealing, is crucial to ensuring the longevity of the deck.
- Over time, the sealer may wear off due to exposure to the elements and foot traffic, so periodic reapplication is necessary.
Environmental Considerations:
- Some deck sealers are formulated to be environmentally friendly, with low volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to minimize their impact on air quality.
- Water-based sealers are often chosen for their lower environmental impact compared to oil-based alternatives.
Brand and Quality:
- The choice of a rated wood deck sealer should consider the brand, quality, and specific formulation that matches your deck's needs.
- Customer reviews and expert recommendations can help you identify reputable products.
In summary, rated wood deck sealers are essential products for homeowners looking to protect and maintain their wooden decks. Choosing the right type and formulation depends on your aesthetic preferences, the level of protection required, and environmental considerations. Regular maintenance and proper application are key to ensuring the longevity and durability of your deck.

SEAL ENDS ONCE Premium End Sealer deeply penetrates the cut ends of lumber to protect against, splitting, water damage & decay. The ends of cut lumber are exposed to the elements causing them to dry out faster than the rest of the board. This can lead to end checking (drying splits), that can appear only months after a new deck installation. Water is also more easily absorbed through un-sealed ends or decks, which can lead to rot, decay, mold & mildew growth. SEAL ENDS ONCE has been the #1 cut end sealer since 2005 and is a great investment to protect & preserve wood decks & steps. SEAL ENDS ONCE protects the cut ends of lumber by sealing the cut ends to slow the drying process & prevent water absorption. It is non-film forming, non-yellowing and will not alter the natural beauty of the wood. It preserves the integrity of the wood by inhibiting rot, decay, mold and mildew growth, and eliminates warping and cupping. SEAL ENDS ONCE forms a flexible, breathable barrier that allows the wood to expand and contract and for water vapor to escape. The advanced nanotechnology of SEAL ONCE penetrates and bonds to form a superior barrier below the surface, protecting from the inside out. Recommended Applications: Cut ends of all soft and hardwoods including: Cedar, Ipe, Mahogany, Cumaru, Bamboo, Timbersil, Redwood, Tigerwood, Fir, Pressure treated lumber. Features: Eco-safe, Non-toxic; will not harm pets, plants, people or marine life, Ultra-low VOC, Water based formula, Flexible, breathable barrier, Stabilizes & protects wood, Prevents warping & cupping, Inhibits wood rot & decay, Can be applied to damp surfaces, Soap and water cleanup, Clear formula can be painted or stained after treatment.
- Penetrating end sealer that can be painted or stained after treatment (unlike most top-coat wax end sealers)
- Stabilizes & protects new wood decks, walkways & steps to prevent end checking (drying splits)
- Prevents water absorption that leads to warping & cupping Inhibits wood rot & decay Soap and water cleanup
- Eco-friendly Non-toxic; will not harm pets, plants, people or marine life Ultra-low VOC Water based

The Science of SEAL-ONCE and Innovative Use of Nanotechnology in Wood Finishes & Stains
Unlike many top-coat sealers sold today that trap moisture below the surface, NANO+POLY creates a flexible, breathable barrier which allows water vapor to escape. This key feature helps prevent damage to wood caused by water intrusion, such as: wood rot, decay, mold & mildew growth, cracking & splitting. Typical wood sealers form a barrier on the surface of the wood, trapping moisture below the surface. As the water evaporates, it causes the surface coating and the substrate to crack & peel, leaving a broken surface that requires continued maintenance and is susceptible to additional damage. SEAL-ONCE uses cutting-edge, nano-particle technology to allow wood to breath and help prevent water vapor damage by protecting wood from the inside out.
Water-based Product that Will Not Harm People, Pets, Plants, Livestock or Marine Life.
SEAL-ONCE products are ultra-low VOC, low odor, non-toxic, non-flammable and non-ozone depleting. They are safer for the environment and do not contain nitrates, phosphorous compounds or heavy metals like many Oil-based sealers & stains on the market today.
Quick & Easy Application
Apply first coat with a synthetic brush; pump-up garden sprayer; air-assisted; and/or airless sprayer. Use 15-17 tip and medium to coarse spray pattern. When spraying, always back brush for best results. Second coat can be applied once first coat has penetrated but is still damp. Second coat must be applied within one hour of applying first coat. For best results, apply in the shade and out of direct sunlight.
Available in 11 Tinted Wood Stain Colors
NANO+POLY can be tinted for use as wood stain in any of the 11 color tints available: Clear, Light Brown, Natural, Brown, Mahogany, Redwood, Bronze Cedar, Cedar, Black, Battleship Gray, Shale Gray & Cape Cod Gray. The tints are sold separately and when mixed with Clear, the tinted formula provides additional UV protection from harmful sun rays.
Surface Preparation & Coverage
Approximate coverage: 250-350 sq. ft./gallon per coat. Actual coverage will vary due to the porosity of the surface. All surfaces should be cleaned with SEAL-ONCE All Wood Cleaner before sealing for best penetration and performance. Remove all old coatings, dust, debris and loose material. Remove oil, grease, algae, grime, mill glaze and mold and mildew stains with appropriate cleaners.

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the warranty on this |
Answer: | I don't believe there is any warranty. We applied it two years ago and the covered areas still look good. The section in direct Sun...needs to have it applied again. |
Question: | How long can the product be stored once the container is opened |
Answer: | We actually used some that we had stored in our garage that was left over from the last time we stained our siding and that was in the summer of 2012, 6 yrs ago. When we removed the lid, it looked like it had become a gel but my husband used a drill with a paint mixer/stirrer tool and it became liquefied again. We applied it to the siding without incident and the color matched the new 5 gallon containers we bought this summer . |
Question: | I have 275 ft of fence plus a gate- what's the coverage with using a sprayer |
Answer: | I’m in the process of staining my fence (I am using a different brand) with a semi-transparent stain. I have 187’ of fence at 5’ high including 2 gates. Applied with a roller and brush, I’m going to need around 13 gallons. My recommendation is rent a sprayer from Home Depot. You’ll save time and money as you’ll use less product and it will go much much faster. |
Question: | we have a heavy dining set and i am worried about scratches after i stain, how does it hold up to heavy chairs moving back and forth |
Answer: | I have a deck/patio furniture set, including a cast iron umbrella base. Lots of use over the last year with no evidence of scratches in the deck. The stain penetrates the wood rather than building a barrier so dragging stuff across the boards won't take it off provided the wood is properly prepared. |

2. Blend multiple containers together to ensure color consistency.

-Ready Seal is biodegradable when in contact with soil and water.
-Meets current VOC level requirements throughout the United States.
- WATER-BASED SEMI-TRANSPARENT WOOD STAIN – This environmentally friendly, water based deck stain allows the wood grain to show through with a beautiful semi-transparent, natural matte finish. It's great for staining wood decks, fences, siding, playsets, outdoor patio furniture, and more.

- EXTREMELY DURABLE, QUALITY THAT LASTS – DEFY Extreme wood stains are made with the highest quality resins available that have better resistance to fading and darkening. The result is a quality semi-transparent deck stain that typically lasts a season or two longer than competitive products. Keep your deck, fence or siding looking great for longer by using DEFY premium wood stains.
- EASY TO MAINTAIN – When it’s time to do a maintenance coat, there’s no need to sand or strip the surface again. Simply brighten the wood with DEFY Wood Brightener and apply a single maintenance coat of DEFY Extreme Wood Stain.
- 250 VOC COMPLIANT - Ships to all states except California. California residents can purchase DEFY Extreme 40, which is VOC Compliant in California.
User questions & answers
Question: | will this work in paint gun |
Answer: | yes it will, that's how I applied it. |
Question: | Will be applying to white cedar fence. How dry does the wood have to be |
Answer: | I did not heed the "one year" to dry on the new portion of my deck. Did old and new at the same time when the new portion was perhaps 2 months old. There was a definite difference. I washed and brightened both. Also did two coats. The 2nd coat was done while the first coat was still wet as per instructions. Also brushed vs. rolled. The stain seeped into the older wood much better and the color is richer. Don't believe the stain will last for years. In covered areas yes, it does. But my deck area that gets full S.Carolina sun, does not last the year. I re-stained last year and will be doing a layer of water proofing on horizontal surfaces this year in hopes that I won't have to stain again for a while. I am still happy that I bought the water based just because of the clean up and the ease of re-staining even if I feel I had to do it much quicker than if I had used oil based. |
Question: | Can I use this on my new cream colored bamboo blinds? Unsure about the method they were colored, but almost no sheen. Want stain protection in kitchen |
Answer: | Hard to say without looking at the wood , but if the wood still looks porous enough we're the Stain can soak in some I would think a light coat possibly 2 would do it. It's very thin milky color but dries clear |
Question: | I am applying this to a fence. Would you recommend it for fences? Also, if you have used this product how well is it holding up |
Answer: | Using it for 10 years, great on fences. Apply W weed oil sprayer. Brush W 4" throw away brush as needed. Time between coats varies W the look you want. 2-3 years looks great. At 5 years fading is noticeable. Apply when cool. Dampen surfaces to get soak in. |
Question: | Can I use this on kitchen cabinets made with walnut veneer? My goal is to keep the natural raw, light look but also see the grain, not milky |
Answer: | No, don’t use on kitchen cabinets. Instead use water base polyurethane. Easy clean up and is just as good as oil base polyurethane. |
Question: | Can this be used to seal laminate flooring |
Answer: | It is not for interior use. Also you cannot stain , paint or varnish over Seal-Once products. Seal-Once must be applied to raw wood. |
Question: | Can this be used over an oil base stain |
Answer: | No. |
Question: | What’s the best product for Douglas fir pergola |
Answer: | No, this Seal Once product is not made for pergola floors, it has a dull finish. Not shiny. I would think you would want a poly eyrthane, which is durable and has a shine, recommend a semi-gloss. I would suggest you go to Sherwin Williams and consult their opinion. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How do appy on a cloudy day in the tropics ? A cloudy day here means.............it's going to rain . How critical is this |
Answer: | Yes you may use it for this specific application. As suggested in a comment down bellow, you would want to make sure that it is fully cured before using the shower. Typically it would take 48 hours to cure but it may take longer depending on the environment. |
Question: | Can you use a regular wood stain after applying |
Answer: | Pressure treated lumber has to be dry. |
Question: | I want to use this on a 6x6 wood beam at the opening to my walk-in shower (floor to ceiling). No direct shower spray. Will this seal it |
Answer: | I doubt that it will eliminate splitting in wood slices. This simply slows the drying process. You’d need something like PEG to soak slices in. Polyethylene glycol. |
Question: | Can it be used on green treated lumber |
Answer: | Hello Huck Finn,Anchorseal 2 is used to coat the ends of freshly cut logs. Pentacryl is something you can soak a piece of "green" lumber in to displace the moisture in it. Hope that helps! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this peel, flake off after 2 - 3 years |
Answer: | I don’t know, I just completed my application to my decking and wood fence about 6 months ago and so far they both look great. I don’t think this product will flake or peel off because is a stain but I think is best if you contact the manufacturer and see what they will advise you. So far under the Phoenix Sun I can see a little fading but I will reapply again in about a year or so. Thanks for the question, Jorge |
Question: | Can anyone share what their decks looked like one year later using this product |
Answer: | I‘ve used this stain for many years on my decks. I’ve restained the horizontal surfaces every other year, the vertical surfaces every 5 years. I just completely stripped old twp stain off of my deck this spring and stained it in May with one coat of Ready Seal. I thought I probably needed two coats since it was the first staining of a clean deck, but waited to see. It faded quite a bit (not surprised) and I added a second coat earlier today. Based on past experience, I expect this to hold its color well for a couple of years, then I’ll hose it off (not powerwash) and add another coat on the horizontal surfaces in 2 years, and I’ll do the same on the vertical surfaces in about 5 years. |
Question: | can this be used on wooden playsets/swingsets? Is it non-toxic |
Answer: | It's used on decks quite a bit and I'm not aware of anybody ever having an issue. It's on my deck and more than one child has crawled around on that without growing a third eye. |
Question: | Can someone who purchased the light oak or golden pine color upload a photo to see how it turned out, please? also, the longevity on a fence? thanks |
Answer: | Check out pics on the Ready Seal website. Color varies based on wood type. I’m not sure about longevity on a fence, I’ve only used it in decks. With decks I’ve found that after getting the original staining established (two coats for decks in my experience), it lasts for about two years, then I hose it off (not powerwash) and add another coat to the horizontal surfaces. I do the same on the vertical surfaces about once every 5 years. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will the sprayer work with semi-transparent stains |
Answer: | If you mean automotive roll bars then an automotive or marine treated pain in a metallic finish would be better choice than this light project coating. Rustoleum website very helpful |
Question: | Can this sprayer be used with wood preservative which can be thick |
Answer: | Yes, it will work on metal. I used it on metal but did take two coats to cover evenly. Keep in mind that it has more of a matte finish, and not at all glossy as the can cap would have you believe. |
Question: | can fence paint be used in this sprayer. I need a sprayer to paint my yard fence.? Thank You |
Answer: | Only if she has a heart of gold. Even still, the shades probably won't match. You may have to do a swatch test and visually compare first. |
Question: | Can I use this sprayer for treating my deck with Thompson's wood protector/preservative which can be thick. Regular garden sprayers clog up |
Answer: | I’ve sprayed lace with it and I imagine it will be fine for a day or so |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this an electric sprayer or do you need an air compressor |
Answer: | No air compressor is needed. It is electric powered, not air. |
Question: | Do I need an air compressor for this? Or is this a stand alone tool |
Answer: | The base unit has a blower or low-pressure compressor built in, no external compressor required. Make sure the base is sitting where it will pull in clean air, no dust or debris. |
Question: | can this be used for oil base paints |
Answer: | Yes. Cleaning oil-based primer took forever to clean because you must use mineral spirits and be sure to get every bit of it off the interior parts. Cleaning latex-based primer and paint out of the sprayer with soapy water was much easier but still time-consuming, especially since I tried to get every bit of primer/paint off the outside of the sprayer and pump in case I want to sell it if we ever finish the kitchen-painting project. I am an almost elderly homemaker, amateur painter, and I was able to use it successfully. |
Question: | Has anyone use it as a Spray tan system |
Answer: | I have. The turbine has similar specs (i.e. correct pressure and airflow) to some other HVLP spray tanning systems; however, for me the cup size was too large and spray pattern on the included nozzle made it difficult to not overspray. I purchased a wagner "spray tan cartridge attatchment" aka "Wagner Detail Front End Kit" (ASIN B00FDZDO32). It works ok but the cup size is still fairly large and tended to overspray . I have since replaced that gun with a "Maxi-Mist Spray Tanning Gun Replacement Lightweight" ($35 on ebay) and am happy with the results even though I had to adapt the hose to fit. Maxi-mist's MaxiMist Evolution TNT Spray Tanning System looks like the wagner painted all black and I wonder if the front end gun ($50) is compatible. I don't use this professionally but can say its works, especially with a purpose made gun. I got best results with the pressure set just above minimum. |

Answer: | It went on semi clear over wood furniture. Dry it looks clear. Did not darken the wood at all. |
Question: | Can this be used on kitchen caninets |
Answer: | This will dry clear, but it is really more of a sealer than a finish. It leaves it feeling almost unfinished but will repel water. Not sure about using it over a stain. I would check in to that before using it. |

The Science of SEAL-ONCE and Innovative Use of Nanotechnology in Wood Finishes & Stains
Unlike many top-coat sealers sold today that trap moisture below the surface, EXOTIC penetrates deep below the surface of wood. This creates a flexible, breathable barrier which allows water vapor to escape, helping prevent damage caused by water intrusion, such as rot, decay, mold & mildew growth, cracking & splitting. Typical sealers form a barrier on the surface of the wood, trapping moisture below the surface. As the water evaporates, it causes the surface coating and the substrate to crack and peel, leaving a broken surface that requires continued maintenance and is susceptible to additional damage. SEAL-ONCE prevents this by protecting wood from the inside out.
Water-based Product that Will Not Harm People, Pets, Plants, Livestock or Marine Life.
SEAL-ONCE products are ultra-low VOC, low odor, non-toxic, non-flammable and non-ozone depleting. They are safer for the environment, easier to apply than solvent based wood finishes and clean up with soap & water. They do not contain nitrates, phosphorous compounds or heavy metals like many Oil-based sealers & stains on the market today.
Quick & Easy Application
Apply first coat with a synthetic brush; pump-up garden sprayer; air-assisted; and/or airless sprayer. Use 15-17 tip and medium to coarse spray pattern. When spraying, always back brush for best results. Second coat can be applied once first coat has penetrated, but is still damp. Second coat must be applied within one hour of applying first coat. For best results, apply in the shade and out of direct sunlight. Clean-up brushes or sprayer with warm soapy water.
Choose from 11 Wood Stain Tints
EXOTIC can be tinted for use as wood stain in any of the 11 color tints available: Clear, Light Brown, Natural, Brown, Mahogany, Redwood, Bronze Cedar, Cedar, Black, Battleship Gray, Shale Gray & Cape Cod Gray.
