9 best deck paint for boats
Deck paint for boats is a specialized type of paint used to coat and protect the decks of boats and other marine vessels. It is designed to withstand the harsh conditions of the marine environment, including exposure to saltwater, UV rays, and constant moisture. Here's what you should know about deck paint for boats:
Durability: Boat deck paint is formulated to be highly durable and resistant to wear and tear. It needs to withstand heavy foot traffic, exposure to water, and the weight of equipment and passengers.
Anti-Slip Properties: One of the most important features of boat deck paint is its anti-slip properties. The surface of a boat deck can become slippery when wet, which poses safety hazards. Deck paint for boats often includes additives that create a textured, non-slip surface to prevent accidents.
Protection from UV Rays: The harsh sun and UV radiation in a marine environment can cause paint to fade and deteriorate quickly. Boat deck paint typically includes UV-resistant additives to protect against sun damage and color fading.
Resistance to Saltwater: Saltwater is corrosive and can cause metal surfaces on a boat to rust and paint to deteriorate. Deck paint for boats is engineered to resist the corrosive effects of saltwater.
Compatibility: Boat deck paint is available in various types, including one-part and two-part epoxy paints, polyurethane paints, and specialty marine deck coatings. The type of paint you choose should be compatible with the material of your boat's deck (e.g., wood, fiberglass, aluminum).
Surface Preparation: Proper surface preparation is crucial when applying boat deck paint. This may involve cleaning, sanding, and ensuring the surface is dry and free of contaminants for the paint to adhere properly.
Application: Boat deck paint can be applied using brushes, rollers, or sprayers. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for the specific product you choose. Multiple coats are often recommended for optimal durability and protection.
Color Options: Boat deck paint is available in a range of colors to match the aesthetics of your boat. White and light colors are popular choices as they reflect heat and sunlight, keeping the deck cooler.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance is essential to keep the deck paint in good condition. Depending on the product, you may need to recoat every few years to maintain protection and appearance.
Environmental Considerations: Be mindful of the environmental impact of the paint you choose. Some marine paints contain chemicals that can harm aquatic life.Look for eco-friendly and low-VOC (volatile organic compound) options if environmental impact is a concern.
When choosing deck paint for your boat, it's essential to select a high-quality product that suits your specific needs, including the type of boat, deck material, and intended usage. Properly maintained deck paint not only enhances the appearance of your boat but also contributes to its longevity and safety on the water.

Question: | can i mix my own color? and do have mixing colors i can buy |
Answer: | the bottle says, KEEPS CONVERTIBLE TOPS LOOKING LIKE NEW, QUICK AND EASY TO USE FORMULA, PENETRATES AND CLEANS EVEN THE TOUGHEST STAINS. IT ALSO SAYS TO SHAKE WELL FOR BEST RESULTS, USE ON A COOL SURFACE IN THE SHADE. ON CLOTH TOPS TEST FOR COLOR FASTNESS IN AN INCONSPICUOUS AREA. I would say that maybe the answer the person gave on do not use is maybe because his top had never been cleaned good, it is a 2010 he said, but i don't know. so like any product of this sort you would have to do a test. it is a cleaner. and if a top hasn't been taken care of then it probably would cause color fastness. but do read the directions and follow them if you should buy this product. |
Question: | would you use it on top of the (factory) painted sheet metal inside a vehicle? if so, what's the recommended preparation |
Answer: | I was able to clean small stains off a black soft top for a solstice. It also cleaned oil stains off of a tan top for a fiat 500. |
Question: | Can i use this with total boat wet edge topside paint |
Answer: | I have a light brown canvass top on a 2008 mini convert and it works perfectly. I see others where owners have taken similar cloth tops through the car wash and they have very noticeable streaks. |
Question: | Will this work on a normal shower stall plastic bottom |
Answer: | No. I wet it down and then use the cleaner, scrub thoroughly, rinse off until the water washes clean, let dry, then spray on the protectorant |

TotalBoat TotalTread Non-Skid Deck Paint is the Easy, Economical Way to Get an Attractive, High-Traction, Low-Glare Surface that Actually Feels Good Underfoot.
The safety of all passengers & crew is always a top priority because boat decks are awash in all kinds of things that make them slippery and unsafe—rain, dew, spray, liberal use of the washdown hose, & spilled drinks, for example. Decks also bear the brunt of heavy foot traffic & punishing UV rays. TotalBoat TotalTread Non-Skid Paint makes it easy to prevent daily wear & tear from ruining your deck—and slip & fall injuries from ruining your day. Its 1-component polyurethane formula is mixed with unique Propyltex wax texturing agents that form a better bond to the paint than other brands. Just stir thoroughly, then apply with a brush or roller. TotalTread's rubbery texture provides maximum traction, & isn't abrasive like the silica-based additives in most non-skid paints. It feels good on bare feet and won't scrape the skin off of kneeling knees. A little hard scrubbing with a stiff bristle brush cleans the surface—without particles becoming dislodged or dark specs showing through.
More coats equals more grip.
TotalTread is ideal for boat decks, docks, ramps, steps, gangways, cabin soles, cabin tops, anchor locker covers, and much more. It comes in colors that match our TotalBoat Wet Edge Topside Paint & its high-solids formula will cover completely in one coat. However, to get the best combination of grip and durability, we recommend applying two coats. For a more aggressive grip, apply a third coat.

Mixing is easy and quick, just use the supplied mixing sticks and stir thoroughly. During application, you don’t need to keep stirring in order to keep the particles suspended in the paint.
APPLICATION
- Apply TotalTread only when dew, rain, and temperature conditions will not affect proper application or drying.
- TotalTread can be thinned 5-10% with TotalBoat Special Brushing Thinner 100, if needed.
TIP: Thin, even coats will yield the best results.
TINTING TOTALTREAD
To get a desired color, without ruining its high-traction finish properties, TotalBoat TotalTread can be tinted, up to 10% by volume, with TotalBoat Wet Edge Topside Paint.
TIP: It's very important not to add too much tint, or you'll ruin the non-skid properties of TotalTread.
Sand lightly, apply final coat.
- After the first coat dries (8 hrs. @ 90°F; 12 hrs. @ 70°F;16 hrs. @ 50°F), sand the surface lightly with 220-grit sandpaper. TIP: When sanding between coats, some of the grit will get sanded down, but do not sand completely smooth.
- Wipe the surface clean with TotalBoat Special Brushing Thinner 100, before applying the final coat.
Enjoy the beautiful finish!

Question: | Never got it |
Answer: | Great stuff |
Question: | Do the decorative epoxy flakes work well with this item |
Answer: | The guy complaining its loaded with grit . How did you think it was made to be slip resistant ? There are alot of foljs that must growed up near power lines . |
Question: | what color is closed to brown |
Answer: | Hi Thanks for your question. Camel is a light medium brown. Thanks |
Question: | Can this be used indoors for concrete floors |
Answer: | Yes, but unless you don't plan on sweeping or mopping the floor I wouldn't use it on its own. It feels like rough concrete when applied. As a base coat that is covered in regular paint for concrete it works great. Once covered you end up with a textured, skid resistant floor that is sweep-able and mop-able. |

User questions & answers
Question: | i have a 12 foot or so aluminum boat. I want to use this product on the inside of the boat. will 1 can do the job |
Answer: | Yes, you definitely can. You can do both the Textured version or the Smooth version. You may want to do the Textured on the bottom half and the Smooth on the top half. Many customers have coated the full vehicle with Durabak. |
Question: | Will it stick to aluminum |
Answer: | I used it on a boat floor and so far its working for me, I dont think I would us it on truck bed unless they make a truck bed liner |
Question: | Do you have to prime on gelcoat |
Answer: | I would suspect it would work very well. I used it on the upper deck of my 50' trawler (area about 15. x 30') and it worked very well. The main attraction for me was that the product is able to accommodate a considerable amount of expansion and contraction without cracking. |
Question: | what kind of primer is needed for this product to paint aluminum |
Answer: | Best to use with the Tuff Coat 2 part primer. I tried some areas without the primer and it did not hold as well as the primered area. I would ask Tuff Coat, it might depend on the type of paint on the wood. I rolled it on my boat deck and could not have asked for a better tougher top coat. |

KiwiGrip Non-Skid Coating
KiwiGrip is a revolutionary, durable, non-skid coating that spreads quickly and easily with an included proprietary roller, offering a beautiful, high traction surface. Easy To Maintain
As a homogeneous material, KiwiGrip does not suffer from the problems encountered with products filled with sand, walnut shells, beads, rubber fleck, or other fillers. Coatings with fillers tend to wear through, and the fillers fall out leaving an unsafe deck that's hard to clean and even harder to re-coat.
Colors Available
KiwiGrip is available in five beautiful stock colors, white, cream, blue, gray and black. Our standard colors have been selected for being low glare and as cool as possible underfoot in direct sunlight. Loaded with a UV stabilizer for consistent color. Note that the RAL codes are approximate.
White - RAL 9016
Cream - RAL 1015
Blue - RAL 250 92 05
Grey - RAL 7047
Black - RAL 9011
Adjustable Texture
By varying the application technique, the texture can be adjusted from a rolled 'pleasure boat' texture to an industrial aggressive 'workboat' texture.
Minimal Prep
Simply clean the surface making sure it is free of wax and grease. Sand the surface, then apply KiwiGrip. Note: On some surfaces, a primer will be required.
Many Applications
It can be used on wood, fiberglass, epoxy, concrete or metal.
Easily Tinted
KiwiGrip is also easily tinted to custom pastel colors. We use the same water-based tints that most paint retailers use. Technically, there is no limit to the color as long as it is a light color since we start from a white base. Dark colors are not possible since the tint is quite runny and too much tint will destroy the non-skid properties.

Brushing
For better flow out when brushing, thin Wet Edge with either TotalBoat Special Brushing Thinner 100 or mineral spirits (5-10% by volume). To ensure a proper cure, apply 2-3 thin coats rather than thick coats.

For best results, the person holding the roller "rolls" vertically, applying an even coat of paint. The person with the brush "tips" horizontally. We recommend a natural bristle brush or a badger hair brush for tipping, instead of a foam brush, which will drag the paint away, rather than level it.

Spraying
When spraying, thin Wet Edge with xylene (thinning percentage varies by the sprayer and conditions, typically 15-20%). Tip: Don't apply paint too thickly, or the finish will not dry properly.

Robert Hadden's sailboat
- Wet Edge Fire Red
- Wet Edge White
"I have been restoring a sailboat for the past two years, and this spring/summer I finally finished it. This picture is the boat hull finished with TotalBoat Wet Edge paint (both white and red), and TotalBoat Gleam varnish on the deck."
Kent Lewis' 1980 AMF Sunfish, "Viper"
- Wet Edge Kingston Gray
"We used TotalBoat Epoxy for fiberglass repairs, then TotalBoat Primer. Faired a few spots with TotalFair, sanded with 100 grit. Used Wet Edge Kingston Gray to paint the Sunfish VIPER. Rolled and tipped the second coat of Wet Edge, thinned 5 percent because temp was 80F plus."
Richard Honan's 8' Nutshell Pram, "Summer Wind"
- Wet Edge Off-White
- Wet Edge Bristol Beige
- Wet Edge Flag Blue
"TotalBoat Wet Edge Bristol Beige (interior), Off White (bottom and lower strakes), Flag Blue (gunnel). Summer Wind would have been painted with 100% TotalBoat Wet Edge, but there was no burgundy, which I used for the seats and rub rail. TotalBoat Marine Wood Finish was used on the mast, boom, and gaff. The tiller was finished with TotalBoat Lust Varnish."
Mary Feeny's front door
- Wet Edge Yellow
"When my yellow front door on a rental property I own needed a fresh coat of paint, I turned to Wet Edge for a few reasons. I wanted a super bright yellow and your color was a perfect match. Also, because it's a rental property, I needed a very durable finish that would really last, so I didn't have to repaint soon and bother the tenants again. Using a marine finish on my exterior front door was the perfect solution and years later it's still bright yellow and looks as great as it did the day I painted the door!"
It all started simply enough. As boaters, we wanted better stuff for our own boats.
Even our favorite products, the ones we'd come to rely on, had room for improvement. It'd be nice if they could hold up longer, cure faster, coat better, apply easier, and—since we all know boat ownership creates a mini maelstrom in your pocket—cost less. So we took everything we knew from 35 years of customer feedback, combined that with our own boating knowledge, and after a few years of rigorous R&D, TotalBoat was born. Launched, rather. By boaters, for boaters.

User questions & answers
Question: | will it stick to pressure treated plywood |
Answer: | Durabak can certainly be brushed, roller or sprayed. Usually one would only use a brush in corners or tight areas. It is most common to use a roller to apply Durabak. When using a roller for the textured version you should only use Durabak's Stipple Roller Sleeve. |
Question: | can this be used over epoxy resins |
Answer: | Surface absolutely must be dry and free of oil or grease. A rough surface is better for adhesion. I rolled this product over my 30 year old boat floor fiberglass surface after I removed the old carpet. Only prep I did was scrubbed old surface with a typical hand brush and vacuumed up all loose material. Mix the paint very very well with a wooden stir stick...do NOT shake it. Poured the product onto the floor and used thin nap paint roller to spread it out evenly. Dried by end of day. Do not paint it over silicon as it will not adhere to that. |
Question: | Can the paint be used on concrete |
Answer: | It is best to apply Durabak between 32 degrees and less than 90 degrees. Applying it in temps of 90 degrees and above will make it hard to apply as the Durabak may set up too quickly and it will therefore be hard to work with. Durabak needs heat and humidity to cure so applications at the low end of the temperature range would take longer to cure. Optimal temps would be between 70-85 degrees. |
Product features
A Premium Marine Undercoat That Lets You Finish Priming Faster!
TotalBoat Topside Primer features a high-solids formula that seals the surface in just 1 thin coat. It dries faster and sands easier than other 1-part primers, letting you start painting sooner.
TotalBoat Topside Primer Makes Topside Paint Look Better and Last Longer.
No one likes sitting around waiting for paint to dry, especially if they're only at the priming stage. TotalBoat Topside Primer is a premium marine undercoat preferred for extremely fast dry times and high-solids, 1-coat coverage that sands easily to a smooth, fair surface ready for one-part topside paints—including TotalBoat Wet Edge, TotalTread non-skid deck paint, TotalBilge epoxy bilge paint & TotalGold paint for decorative detail work. Apply to properly prepared wood, gelcoat, fiberglass & previously painted surfaces in good condition. Use anywhere above the waterline. It comes in white & gray. We recommend using white under lighter colors, and gray under darker colors. It's important to note that our Topside Primer is "high-solids" not "high-build". The difference is that a high-solids coating has great coverage & sealing properties in 1 coat, whereas a high-build primer allows increased application thickness to hide surface imperfections.
Tip: Keep in mind, it's a primer, not a filler—we recommend applying one thin coat.
Because this is a high-solids primer, it's designed to be applied thinly to seal the surface, not in thick coats to fill surface imperfections. A thick coat will not dry properly, and will gum up your sanding discs. Applying a thin coat of this fast-drying primer allows it to dry properly and makes it easy to sand, once cured. It also allows the cured primer to flex without lifting.
TotalBoat Customers Get Great Results
- "Goes on easily, covers well and dries fast. Odor disappears fast also. When it's dry you can see any imperfections in the surface which are easy to fix by light sanding." - John R. via Amazon Reviews
- "It went on a little thick so I thinned it a little. After drying the next day, I sanded it to smooth out a few imperfections. Sanded easily & smoothed out nicely." - M. Mitchell via Amazon Reviews
Easy to apply by brush, roller, or sprayer.
Surface prep is the key to smooth, long-lasting results. A properly prepared surface is clean, solid, and dry. For best results, do not apply primer immediately after rain, during foggy weather, or when the temperature is below 50°F.
Use a 1/8" solvent-safe foam roller or a firm polyester brush, for best results. Avoid lap marks by not priming in direct sunlight and by coating sections of the surface either down or across to natural breaks, maintaining a wet edge.
Our premium Topside Primer is easy to apply to properly prepared wood, fiberglass, gelcoat, or previously painted surfaces in good condition.
Thinning: When brushing or rolling, thin TotalBoat Topside Primer with TotalBoat Special Brushing Thinner 100. If spraying, thin with xylene, up to 15-20%.
Covers in a single coat and dries fast!
In most cases, just 1 thin coat of this unique primer's high-solids formula provides the needed adhesive bond for topside paint finishes, even if full hide is not achieved. This makes the job easier because it means you'll do far less sanding in order to get a fair surface ready for finish paint.
During application, if your wet edge begins to dry, or you see that you missed a spot and the primer's already setting up, let it dry completely before touching up the area.
Tip: Do not apply primer too thickly or you'll lose flexible adhesion characteristics that make TotalBoat Topside Primer one of the marine industry's leading one-part undercoats. Dry Film Thickness (also known as DFT) should be 1-2 mils per coat.
Dry Time To Sand or Overcoat: 1 hour @ 90°F, 2 hours @ 70°F, 4 hours @ 50°F.
Can be applied below the waterline, but is not a barrier coat.
TotalBoat Topside Primer can be used to prime surfaces below the waterline, but it's important to note that it's not an epoxy barrier coat. To prevent osmotic blistering or corrosion, use TotalBoat TotalProtect Epoxy Barrier Coat and Primer or TotalBoat Aluminum Boat Barrier Coat prior to applying paint.

Product description
TotalBoat TotalBilge premium bilge paint is ideal for those greasy, grimy, humid places on your boat exposed to the harshest conditions and the hardest wear, especially the bilge. This epoxy-based, high-performance alkyd resin marine paint is easy to apply by brushing, rolling, or spraying. It provides a long-lasting, rock-hard, glossy finish that's resistant to all the nasty things that can plague not only bilges, but engine rooms, bulkheads, chain lockers, lazarettes, and V-berth stowage areas. We're talking diesel fuel, engine oil, acids, antifreeze, grease, grime, heat, humidity, mildew, and solvents. TotalBilge's hard-wearing, abrasion-resistant finish provides excellent protection against the damage and staining that can occur when chemicals, oil and sludge get absorbed into wood or fiberglass. A clean, freshly painted bilge is not just for looks - there's also a practical side. A clean bilge lets you see problems such as leaking fuel and oil, and fix them before they get worse. Besides making it easier to find problems, our white bilge paint also makes it easier to find stuff that accidentally gets dropped into the bilge, such as tools and car keys. Our TotalBilge gray bilge paint is the lightest shade of gray available. Both colors offer superior opacity for excellent coverage and ability to hide previous stains on fiberglass, primed aluminum, primed steel, and wooden boats. The durable, high-gloss finish is also easy to keep clean - just wipe away the grease and grime with a cleaning and degreasing product such as TotalBoat Eco Solvent. TotalBilge is available in Quart and Gallon sizes, in your choice of Gray or White. Compare to other bilge coat paint products such as Interlux Bilgekote, Pettit EZ Bilge Paint, and Epifanes Bilge Paint. All TotalBoat products are designed for boaters, by boaters, to provide great value and great results. 100% made in the USA.
