14 best pinless moisture meters
A pinless moisture meter, also known as a non-invasive or non-destructive moisture meter, is a tool used to measure the moisture content of various materials without causing damage to the surface. These devices are commonly used in construction, woodworking, and home improvement applications to assess the moisture levels of building materials such as wood, drywall, concrete, and insulation. Here are some key features and information about pinless moisture meters:
Non-invasive Measurement: Pinless moisture meters operate by sending electromagnetic signals into the material being tested. These signals bounce back to the device, and based on the time it takes for them to return, the meter calculates the moisture content. This non-invasive method is particularly useful when you don't want to leave holes or marks on the surface.
Materials Tested: Pinless moisture meters can be used on a variety of materials, including wood, drywall, concrete, plaster, insulation, and even some types of flooring. They are versatile tools for detecting moisture issues in a wide range of applications.
Moisture Scales: Many pinless moisture meters have moisture scales that provide readings in percentage values. These values indicate the moisture content of the material being tested, with higher percentages indicating greater moisture levels.
Relative Readings: Keep in mind that pinless moisture meters provide relative readings, which means they compare the moisture content of the material at one spot to another. They are best used for identifying areas with abnormal moisture levels rather than providing precise moisture content values.
Applications:
- In construction, these meters are used to identify moisture problems that could lead to mold growth, decay, or structural issues.
- In woodworking, they help ensure that wood is properly dried before crafting it into furniture or other items.
- In home improvement, they can be used to detect water leaks, identify areas of potential damage, or assess the moisture levels of walls and floors before installing new materials.
Accuracy and Limitations: The accuracy of pinless moisture meters can vary depending on the quality of the device and the material being tested. They may not provide precise readings on irregular surfaces, and calibration may be necessary for accurate results.
Usage Tips: To get the most accurate readings, it's important to follow the manufacturer's instructions, ensure good contact with the material, and calibrate the meter as needed. Additionally, readings can be affected by factors like temperature and humidity, so it's essential to consider these variables.
Pinless moisture meters are valuable tools for professionals and homeowners alike, allowing for the early detection of moisture problems that can lead to costly repairs or health concerns. They are convenient, non-destructive, and versatile instruments that play a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of structures and materials.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used to locate a leak behind drywall. The drywall is not showing wetness so the water is probably running down a stud or outside wall |
Answer: | The laser level is amazing I’m very happy with it. It helped me a lot with my work especially with tiles and hanging up pictures |
Question: | Can this be used on concrete and drywall |
Answer: | Yes, our laser level is suitable for laying tiles on the floor or wall. If you turn on all lasers, it can indeed give you several 90-degree angles at the same time. |
Question: | I had a leak inside a wall that came from an outside source. I would like to check for moisture on drywall and wood behind wall. Is that possible |
Answer: | There is a portable plastic toolbox that can hold all accessories and laser level, which is a great design. There is protective foam installed inside the tool box, so you don't have to worry about accidentally dropping it and damaging the laser inside. The case fully protects the laser! |
Question: | What's the probe length? Are they insulated or replaceable |
Answer: | Actually I don’t think there are any differences in function of the laser but they are different. I think the Huepar brand was introduced into the market earlier and accumulated more reviews, which resulted in customers willing to pay a higher price for the laser. I like my laser level very much and it works great. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Just got a used one on amazon here. there are no instructions. also it has no battery |
Answer: | I bought the dr.meter specifically to check installed drywall in non-pin mode. I didn't even see a way to "calibrate" the meter. I tested it on a known dry section of wall: the meter read 0%. Then I slid it over the suspected area and got readings varying from 15% up to 60% or so. That confirmed my suspicions. I cut out a big rectangle of the 3/4" drywall ceiling and it was quite wet inside, dripping. The open cell foam insulation was wet and spongy. The meter reading is instant and there is no apparent lag when moving. It even differentiates between different pieces of fruit. I tested some oranges, with readings of 40% to 55%, or so. It's a great device! |
Question: | Does this item come with a case |
Answer: | No, the pins are not replaceable. |
Question: | Does it sense moisture through a painted surface or just the moisture content of the paint |
Answer: | Please kindly be advised that you can choose the probe needling mode or the scanning mode. There are no pinhole marks will be left in the scanning mode. Thank you! |
Question: | This meter is called pinless, but, according to the questions below it has pins. So is it pinless or does it have pins |
Answer: | Most interior walls read 0%. Best way to judge your walls or ceiling is to take readings in other areas of the room. But yes 20% is high. Also make sure there is no metal in the wall like in the corners some house do have metal this will give you a false reading. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Would a thermal camera and moisture meter accomplish the same tasks as this unit |
Answer: | Google the manufacturer name and go to their website, they will be glad to supply you new pins. |
Question: | Is this essentially the same camera as the tg165 but with extra features that make it good for moisture |
Answer: | I suspect it can read the moisture in any construction material except a metal. I don't know what an rv wall is made of, but if it's not metal the reader will probably work. |
Question: | If i need to find a steam leak in a 7000 sq ft apartment building, should i get this or the tg |
Answer: | Measuring Range: Pin mode - 5% - 50% (wood); 1% - 33% (other building materials); Pinless mode - 0.1 - 100% for all materials with a measuring depth up to 3/4" (20 mm) Pad mode measuring depth up to 3/4" (20 mm) |
Question: | Why use this instead of just a normal thermal camera |
Answer: | It works by measuring the conductance between the probes, so rubber makes me think no for the inside. Yes/maybe for the surface. Since rubber by definition is non-porous, you couldn't stick the probe in and get it to measure the amount of electricity conducted through moisture between the probes. Unless we're actually talking some sort of open cell foam like a yoga mat or something squishy where water could be absorbed. Then it could work. |

FLIR MR176 Imaging Moisture Meter Plus with IGM
The FLIR MR176 is an all-in-one tool equipped with a built-in thermal camera that can show you exactly where to measure moisture. Featuring Infrared Guided Measurement (IGM) technology, the MR176 helps you quickly scan and target moisture issues, visually guiding you to the spot where you can confidently take measurements and analyze readings. An integrated pinless sensor and an external pin probe provide the flexibility to take either non-intrusive or intrusive measurements. Coupled with a field-replaceable temperature and relative humidity sensor, and automatically calculated environmental readings, the MR176 is convenient and easy to use. You’ll produce the right measurements — faster.
What Is IGM?
IGM is powered by a FLIR Lepton thermal imaging sensor that can show you temperature differences across your target. It guides you to the precise location of potential problems that require further testing or investigation.
Identify Hidden Moisture With IGM
An 80 x 60, 4800-pixel Lepton thermal imager powers IGM to show you potential areas of moisture so you can troubleshoot quickly. Customize your thermal images by choosing from four color palettes and selecting which measurements you want to take (moisture, temperature, relative humidity, dew point, vapor pressure, mixing ratio).
Get Precise Readings
With the MR176 you can confidently take measurements and analyze readings. A progressive environmental stability indicator removes response-time error when you move through a site to different measurement locations, and it informs you when the relative humidity readings have reached a steady state. Take either pinless moisture measurements, or use the external pin probe with expandable probe options. A lock-image setting prevents extreme hot and cold temperatures from interfering with your images while you scan for issues.
Get More Work Done In Less Time
This meter is convenient, flexible, and easy to operate. The temperature/relative humidity sensor can easily be removed and replaced when needed to reduce downtime. Document readings and images, download them with the included USB cable, and then use free FLIR Tools software to quickly generate reports.

User questions & answers
Question: | What density selection would work best for sheetrock |
Answer: | Hello John Jo,A thermal camera and moisture meter would perform the same tasks. The convenience and innovation on the MR160 is that the unit will do the job of both separate units. The IR function in the MR160 is for visual guidance, where a thermal camera may provide more detailed temperature information. Best Regards... |
Question: | What is the maximum sensing depth of the MDP |
Answer: | Not at all, the thermal imager is so so. But the true benefit is the ability to read the moisture content of material and to have all your customized readings on the screen at all times, including relative humidity, ambient air, etc. I have the 176 which does probe testing and also has a pad on the back of the unit, this pad lets you pull a reading without destructive measures (awesome for general walk arounds)! Can't remember what the other models offered, but I am happy with the 176. Great for mold and home inspections. I do also have an additional flir thermal imager. I definitely recommend one with MSX technology. The difference is unreal! Good Luck. |
Question: | Do i need to calibrate this wood moisture meter before using |
Answer: | I would get the MR176 because the Thermal Imager may pick up the steam and the change in temperature, not just look for moisture. |
Question: | Just bought. Husband calibrated. But now it blinks 0.0% when turned on and will not take a measurement. How to fix |
Answer: | Hi, Matt M. Totally agree with you - if you need only just to spot the problem area (leakage in a wall or elsewhere) intending to fix it and get rid of it - the very Flir's C2 or TG165 would be pretty handy and cover all the needs of this piece/type of job. The MR160 is a multi-tool for those who need to "Locate the Enemy and MEASURE the Hostility" for some specific needs or considerations. ) |

User questions & answers
Question: | Could you test wood pellets |
Answer: | The Extech MO50 takes quick Moisture level reference measurements (in percent %) on wood and building materials. The measurement range for building materials is Low: 1.5% to 16.9%; Medium: 17% to 19.9%; High: 20 to 33%. If the expected moisture percentage of the paper is expected to fall at or above 1.5% then the MO50 Compact Pin Moisture Meter would work appropriately. |
Question: | Can this tester measure the moisture content of grain , corn ,soybeans or wheat |
Answer: | Thank you so much for your interest in our products. The MO53 is able to detect moisture at 0.8''. For the application you mention, I believe you can be interested in a different meter. From FLIR, we can suggest the MR176 using the MR12 ball probe. That will help you to get almost 4'' depth in the material. |
Question: | Can I use it for drywall |
Answer: | Expect you would have to push the meter probes through the paint layer to get a good reading. |
Question: | Is this pinless |
Answer: | It really only measures moisture that is within 1/2" of the surface. For example I have a leaky toilet in a bathroom and the subfloor is saturated with water. I have to push the prongs through the surface of the flooring until it reaches the wet subfloor, in order to get a reading. If you need something for reading deep within a wall, you will need an invasive meter which has really long prongs that can be fed through test holes that you drill into the affected area. If you want to test deep within areas such as several inches, the only way is through destructive inspection, pinless moisture meters, and in some cases infrared cameras. extech is one of the most trusted meter brands and I am very happy with my purchase. It works best for measuring the moisture content of wood specifically at the test location. If there was a flood and the surface appears dry but you have some suspension as to what's going on several inches into the wall cavity, this meter will not help. |
