Answer:	Nathan, Thanks for the question. The Moisture Range on this Hand Held meter for CORN is 10 - 40%. However, the clear plastic funnel which is provided to assist with consistent filling of the test cell, will not work well on corn over say 25 - 30%. This is due to the lack of flowability in the higher moisture content. I would suggest that you still fill the funnel, but pour the sample back out the large end at just 1 - 2" above the test cell. EVERY TIME and at the same Rate. With this consistency, you would have much greater repeatability between different tests. Answer:	I'm not an expert in this at all! I got the meter because my lawn guy kept saying one area of my lawn was too moist and I thought it was dry. (He was right.) He tells me that the toughest lawns are those where the grass has to grow deep roots looking for water and if the soil is too moist that the roots stay superficial. He told me that watering once a week (twice at most) was good for it. it sounds like you have moisture down deep where the roots can find it. This is not my field, so I am telling you what he said. However, I have turned on my sprinklers only 3 times this whole season (we have gotten intermittent rain) and the lawn looks great.

Answer:	This thing has a probe with two dissimilar metals that creates a voltage/current when immersed in an electrolyte (the soil). So this thing is really a battery with a meter to read the amount of electricity generated ( based on the quality of the electrolyte - soil). Look up "lemon battery" to find out more about this principle of electricity generation. What I want to know is why you can't leave this device in the soil all the time. (The instructions tell you to not leave it in for more that 1hr. Why?)

Answer:	It should be pre-calibrated to 7 (neutral). Since most soil is neutral, you may not see the needle move much, even after ten minutes. It will take at least ten minutes to give you an accurate reading, at any rate. If you add egg shells (to make it more alkaline) or coffee grounds (to make it more acidic) and wait another ten minutes, you should see a slight change. Try a sample of 50% soil to 50% coffee grounds to see if you can get a more extreme response.

Answer:	I purchased mine for testing the spoil pH and watering needs and they both seem to be very accurate. I do not know how accurate it is for light testing. I do not know what your application is for, but if it's to see how much light is present for growing a garden, then you need a minimum of 6 hrs of sunlight a day, preferably 8. Of course it also depends on what you are trying to grow, some plants need much more than others.

Answer:	Hi! I have a moisture meter and its saving me from over watering which I am prone to do. Some plants like to be moist and some are drought resistant and can tolerate a lack of water and others like flowers need to be water more often because they wither quickly. if you have soil that is a mixture of clay then the clay will hold moisture and the plant won't need water as often. You can go on line and there is a wealth of information including how to water and care for any plant you have. I also sent a soil sample off to the North Carolina Dept of Agriculture so they could tell me about fertilizer. Good luck. Its all on line.

Answer:	Thank you for your excellent question. The pH of the water can affect your results. In areas that have excessively hard water (water with lots of minerals in it), the pH of the water will be strongly alkaline (pH of 8.5 and higher), and this can impact the reading you will get from your Garden Tutor Soil pH Test Strips. The impact is typically about .5 of a point for pH, but the drift can be up to 1 point. For most gardeners getting a pH reading within .5 of a point is sufficient. Most municipal tap water has a pH of 6.5 to 8.5, so using tap water will be OK but may cause your reading to be off about .5 of a point. If you want to get the best reading possible from your test strips, it's a good idea to use fresh unopened distilled water. You can check the manufacturing date on the unopened distilled water container, and if it is under 30 days old, it should be about a 7.0 pH. When using distilled water, you can be assured that you will be getting the most accurate soil pH reading possible. One of the main reasons distilled water is used for soil pH testing is that it has a low "buffer capacity" and will not meaningfully impact the actual pH reading of a soil sample. It is important to note that the Garden Tutor Soil pH Test Strips are calibrated for soil testing only, so just dipping the test strips into straight water won't give you an accurate pH reading of the water. The ph and moisture function rely on natural electrical conductivity of the soil, this is achieved via the dissimilar metals at the tips, no power source is necessary.

Answer:	Since soil most often is in/close to neutral state (with pH value of 7), it is highly likely that you find the needle in display window stay still (because the default pH value is set at somewhere between 7 and 8) when you use it to test the pH value of soil. Customers sometimes are misled by this appearance and hence regard the tester as a defective unit by mistake.
