12 best grade lasers
Grade lasers, often referred to as rotary lasers, are sophisticated and precise tools used primarily in construction, surveying, and civil engineering projects. They are an essential part of the toolkit for professionals in these fields. Here's what you should know about grade lasers:
Purpose: Grade lasers are used to establish a level reference plane or grade line over a large area. They are crucial for ensuring that construction projects, such as building foundations, roads, and landscaping, are constructed accurately and meet the specified grade or slope requirements.
Rotary Function: Grade lasers emit a laser beam that rotates 360 degrees horizontally. The rotating beam creates a horizontal plane or line of light that is used as a reference for leveling or grading tasks.
Applications: Grade lasers are versatile tools used in a variety of applications, including:
- Construction: They are used to set accurate grades for excavations, concrete pouring, and foundation work.
- Landscaping: Grade lasers help in leveling and grading lawns, gardens, and other outdoor spaces.
- Road and Highway Construction: They ensure the correct slope and grade for roadways and highways.
- Utility Installation: Grade lasers help in laying pipes and conduits with proper slope and alignment.
Accuracy: Grade lasers are known for their high level of accuracy, typically within a fraction of an inch over long distances. This precision is essential for construction projects to meet engineering specifications.
Remote Control: Many grade lasers come with remote control capabilities, allowing the operator to adjust the laser's rotation speed and alignment from a distance, increasing efficiency and ease of use.
Self-Leveling: Grade lasers are often equipped with self-leveling technology. If the laser is not level, it will automatically adjust its position to maintain a perfectly level plane.
Grade Slope Capability: Some grade lasers can be set to specific slopes, making them suitable for tasks that require a consistent grade, such as drainage systems or ramps.
Visibility: Grade lasers use highly visible laser beams that can be seen even in bright sunlight or over long distances. Some models also come with a laser detector or receiver to enhance visibility.
Battery or Corded: Grade lasers are available in both battery-operated and corded versions, offering flexibility in different work environments.
Durability: These tools are built to withstand tough construction site conditions, with rugged and weather-resistant designs.
Accessories: Grade laser kits often include accessories like tripods, grade rods, laser receivers, and carrying cases to aid in setup and operation.
Grade lasers are essential tools for achieving precise and accurate grading and leveling in construction and surveying projects.Their ability to establish a consistent reference plane over large areas helps ensure that structures and surfaces meet the required specifications, resulting in high-quality outcomes.

User questions & answers
Question: | I'm curious as to why people would purchase the LL300 series since this one does both horizontal and vertical |
Answer: | The black pins are not to hold the lens to the visor. There are screws that hold the lens to the visor. The black pins represent where the screws would be placed. |
Question: | is this a rotary or just horizontal and vertical |
Answer: | the distance between the mounting screws is 3-7/8".the wording in the description leads you to think the lenses are plastic, they are glass. |
Question: | Would my Bosch Optical GOL26 mount to this tripod also |
Answer: | These glasses are not designed for reading. Magnifying glasses at the drug store do better. Neither of these choices would replace visiting an eye doctor and getting the proper glasses for the issue. Low vision could be a medical problem. |
Question: | Can you use this system for both outdoor foundation and interior projects |
Answer: | I am able to wear these over my reading glasses with no problem. It may depend on the size of the frames. |

Machine control compatible, the LL500 is ideal for a range of jobs, including checking and setting elevations, concrete forms, footings, and foundations for medium to large-sized jobs, as well as longer range machine control applications. You can also tackle excavating, digging footings, and septic tanks or sub-base leveling with skid steer loaders by using the LL500 with the CR600 Receiver (not included).
Laser Level Offers Long-Range Accuracy
The LL500 features a 1,600-foot (500-meter) working diameter and accuracy range of +/-1/16-inch at 1,000 feet to increase productivity by reducing the need for multiple setups on a large jobsite. To improve efficiency, the LL500 is self-leveling with a built-in out-of-level shut-off that maintains accuracy over the entire work area while minimizing errors. And to make it easier and faster to find the on-grade position, a visible "spotting" beam determines receiver mounting placement.
Temperature Compensation for Precise Readings
Designed to deliver optimum precision, the LL500 boasts temperature compensation for highly stable, repeatedly accurate readings, even under dramatic temperature changes. Two power options--alkaline or rechargeable batteries--keep the unit working consistently to minimize down-time due to power loss.
HL700 Receiver: Accurate and Easy to Use
The perfect partner for the LL500, the HL700 Receiver accurately measures elevations across the jobsite. It is compatible with any rotating transmitter.
The HL700, which can be used in rod-mounted or hand-held position, features a digital readout of elevation that provides a numeric display of +/-2 inches. The readout is displayed on the large front and rear LCDs and shows exactly how far the elevation is from on-grade. To save you time, accurate measurements can be made without moving the rod clamp, and selectable units of measure can be displayed to meet your application: millimeters, centimeters, feet, or fractional inches.
A 5-inch reception height, more than double the industry standard, allows quick acquisition of the laser beam, and an anti-strobe sensor prevents false readings from site strobe lights. There's also a capture function that captures and retains a measurement when the display is difficult to see.
Incredibly durable, the HL700 is built to survive harsh jobsite conditions: it's completely waterproof and can withstand a drop of up to 10 feet on concrete. The HL700 is backed by a three-year "no excuses" warranty.
Warranty Information
The LL-500 transmitter is backed by a two-year warranty, and the HL700 Receiver is backed by a three-year warranty.

User questions & answers
Question: | I have a Dewalt 18 volt rotary laser. Is this receiver compatible with it |
Answer: | Designed for measurement of moisture content from the surface down to .25” (6.4mm) or .75” (19mm) deep inside wood "The above measurements are conservative. Example, I can place my hand on the opposite side of a 2x4 when taking a reading on the other side and affect the meter reading." FROM THE USER'S MANUAL 1. If the thickness of the piece of wood or other building material is greater than .75 inch (19mm), and you wish to get more of a full thickness rather than a shallow measurement, it is a good idea to take measurements in 3/4” mode on both sides and average the readings. "However, refer to my comment above regarding the 2x4. We have many companies and individuals that use Orions (and our previous MMC models) to measure 1.5 inch thick to 2.0 inch thick material, and are only measuring from one side (face).” 2. To prevent high or inaccurate readings, always have a minimum 1-inch (25mm) air gap underneath the piece of wood you are measuring. During this process make sure your hand is not directly underneath the wood you are measuring. Ron Smith - Wagner Meters Sales Manager |
Question: | Would it work with pulsing line lasers |
Answer: | First, regardless of the meter utilized, in general a meter’s accuracy is somewhat affected by the type and amount of treatment in the wood. Next, the Orion model 930 is well-suited for measuring wood with thicknesses up to 2”. IF there is very little moisture gradient in the thicker pine (3” and above) the depth of readings with the 930 will also represent the overall moisture content of the thicker pieces. To best answer these type of technical questions, we highly recommend you call Wagner Meters so their experts can help with your individual situation. Ron Smith - Wagner Meters |
Question: | Does this receiver go with a Bosch laser |
Answer: | For measuring the moisture in wood that has fairly smooth, flat surfaces at least 2.5 inches by 2.5 inches, one of Wagner’s non-pin Orion-model moisture meters would be fine. If you have rough, rounded surfaces, you may need to use a pin-type moisture meter with longer pins with insulated shafts on a slide hammer cabled to the actual meter. |
Question: | will this work with 3d series laser level |
Answer: | Although the Wagner Meters commitment to customer satisfaction dates back to its inception (the 1960s), the dawn of 2012 brought in a new era. Wagner Meters now offers a standard seven-year warranty policy on all Orion meters as well as the MMC and MMI moisture meters. Effective since January 1, 2012, Wagner Meters has implemented extended warranty protection on these models to ensure that woodworkers, manufacturers, installers, and inspectors can measure and monitor their wood products moisture content (MC) with renewed confidence. |
