11 best combination squares
A combination square is a versatile measuring and layout tool commonly used in carpentry, woodworking, and other trades that require precision measurements and straight-line marking. It consists of a metal ruler with a sliding adjustable head that can be locked at various angles to perform different functions. Here's what you should know about combination squares:
Components: A combination square typically consists of three main components:
- Ruler: The ruler, usually made of stainless steel or aluminum, serves as the primary measuring and straight-edge component. It comes in various lengths, with common sizes being 12 inches and 6 inches.
- Head: The head is the adjustable part of the tool. It features a protractor scale that allows you to set angles, a level vial for checking horizontal alignment, and a locking mechanism to secure the head at the desired angle.
- Scribe: Some combination squares have a scribe or scriber attachment on the head. This sharp point is used for marking lines on wood or other materials.
Functions:
- Measuring: The ruler is used for taking precise measurements in inches or millimeters.
- Marking Square Lines: By setting the head at a 90-degree angle to the ruler, you can use the combination square to mark square or perpendicular lines accurately.
- Setting Angles: The protractor scale on the head allows you to set and measure angles. This is particularly useful for tasks like miter cuts in carpentry.
- Checking for Level and Plumb: The level vial on the head helps ensure that a surface or object is level or plumb.
Versatility: Combination squares are versatile tools suitable for a wide range of tasks, including layout work, framing, cabinet making, and more. They can be used in conjunction with other tools like circular saws and chisels to ensure accurate cuts and joinery.
Precision: These squares are prized for their accuracy, making them essential for projects where precise measurements are crucial.
Maintenance: To maintain accuracy, it's important to keep the combination square clean and lubricated, especially the locking mechanism. Regularly check and recalibrate the square as needed.
Types: There are different types of combination squares, including standard combination squares, machinist squares, and try squares. Each may have slightly different features and applications.
Combination squares are indispensable tools for both professional carpenters and hobbyist woodworkers. Their ability to measure, mark, and set angles with precision makes them a valuable addition to any toolbox or workshop, helping ensure that projects are executed accurately and efficiently.

User questions & answers
Question: | How can one be $6.75 and a 2-pack is $49.90? Thanks, but if you are that careless I'll take my business elsewhere |
Answer: | Made in China. |
Question: | The head machined, but is the blade machined as well? Or just stamped with rough edges |
Answer: | I have both this combination square and a Starrett. The Starrett is, of course, much more expensive; however, the Starrett is more accurate and better made. For woodworking, there are some things for which accuracy is very important. The Irwin square I have is out of square by about 1/128" over its length. If I use this to set the angle of my table saw or to make sure my miter gauge is true. 1/128" over 12 inches may not seem like much but it's enough to cause parts I cut to not fit, particularly cutting a wide board. The Starrett combination square is one of the few tools that I use every day in my shop. I expect the Starrett to last my lifetime. In fact, I have a Starrett protractor head and rule that I inherited. It's decades old, but it's completely serviceable and a pleasure to use. |

Answer: | Thank you for choosing Irwin Tools. Our goal is to provide the highest quality service. Irwin tools does not manufacture any additional accessories to accommodate this product. |
Question: | Packaging says stainless steel. Description says aluminum alloy. Which is it |
Answer: | I don't know & in 65 years I've never heard that question - If I was truly concerned about something that trivial I'd buy a precision square like Lufkin-Starrett or Brown & Sharpe at about 4 or 5 times the cost - if you use a pencil to mark you'll never know whether it's perfect or not. I'm very pleased with the quality of the Irwin for everyday shop work. |

Question: | What is the width and thickness of the ruler? I am looking for a stop that will fit. Thank you |
Answer: | Hi Altug, Great question! Our short answer for you is: Both. Our speed square uses imperial (US/Inches) marks, and our 6" combo square features both imperial and metric on its ruler. If you're looking for metric only, we suggest you search for our metric square, the NA202, which Amazon keeps in stock, and our metric combo square options: the SVC133 is like this 6" combo square since it features both imperial (US/Inches) and metric, or the SVCM233, which is metric only on both sides. Amazon also has both of these combo squares in stock. Hope that helps! The Swanson Team |

Question: | can i measure inside and outside corner miters angles with this? i can't tell |
Answer: | I live on the coast of northern CA. The humidity is probably not quite as brutal as FL, but in the few months I’ve had this square, I see no rust haze. Though I’ve yet to use it, camilla oil is good insurance. |
Question: | why only one blurry image ? is it that bad |
Answer: | I was tired of getting readings from my two older combination squares. I decided to rely on the Starrett reputation and buy a good square. It is not riveted, but has a solid steel handle. I find it to be the most accurate measuring device that I have. |
Question: | Does the protractor head have a spirit level |
Answer: | My usage shows the tolerance is probably +- .015” |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this aluminum or plastic or what???? Only Honest answers please |
Answer: | I can only say with certainly not made in the United States. I vaguely recall China, but I no longer have the original packaging they came in. There is no country of origin listed on the two squares. Sorry I cannot be more definitive. |
Question: | Is this stamped or laser etched |
Answer: | From igaging |
Question: | But is it actually, consistently, square |
Answer: | I did not use anything on the heads. On the grooves of the rulers I took a fine flat needle file to the edges to remove any burs that I could feel. I used a combination of fine needle files to smooth up the locking mechanism. Also, I smoothed the ends of the springs where they had been cut to length. Then I used some paste wax in the grooves and on the surface of the rulers. Not perfect, but so much better. If you mess with the heads be very careful not to put them out of calibration (I did have to calibrate one of the squares when it arrived before I removed the burs). |
Question: | Are the markings along the ruler printed or engraved |
Answer: | You order Inches or Metric. It is not a combination unit. |
