14 best carpenters squares
Carpenter's squares, also known as framing squares or carpentry squares, are essential measuring and layout tools used in carpentry and woodworking. They are L-shaped measuring instruments typically made of metal, such as steel or aluminum, and consist of a long arm (blade) and a shorter perpendicular arm (tongue).
These squares are designed to assist carpenters in accurately measuring right angles, marking straight lines, and ensuring the accuracy and precision of cuts and joints. The long arm, which is usually 24 inches long, is used for measuring and marking longer distances, while the shorter arm, typically 16 inches, is for shorter measurements.
Carpenter's squares have markings and graduations along both arms, allowing for precise measurements. The markings often include scales for common measurements, such as inches, feet, and centimeters. Some squares also feature degree markings for measuring angles other than 90 degrees.
To use a carpenter's square, the longer arm is placed against one edge of the material, ensuring it is perfectly aligned, and the shorter arm is used to mark or cut along the perpendicular edge, creating a right angle.
In addition to basic carpentry, these squares are essential in various woodworking projects, including framing, cabinetry, furniture making, and other construction tasks. Carpenters heavily rely on these tools to ensure the accuracy and alignment of their work, making them a fundamental part of any carpenter's toolkit.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the ruler also have units of measurement of centimeters |
Answer: | No, it does not. Fastcap does produce a flat back righty Lefty, but at this time it's only available from their website. |
Question: | Which size (7 or 12) would be best for a re-roofing project |
Answer: | Approximately 2.5x2.5 inches square; 1.5" deep. I am petite (5'2", 100 pounds) and it fits comfortably in my hands, although it did not specifically say "compact" on the packaging. I am left-handing, so I love that the numbering runs in both directions...no more trying to read upside-down and backwards! Also, it has a built-in pencil sharpener and an erasable area on front of tape to write down your measurements. Originally ordered it as a gift for my fiance and I liked his so much, I ordered one for myself. We are planning on ordering more for holiday giving. |
Question: | Can you mark 45 degree cuts |
Answer: | I use mine for building work (wood, sand, tiling) etc but I would not recommend chucking them in a bucket of sand. If your in the USA than they are cheap, unlike here in the UK I have seen them selling for £30+. I like them, seem well made, like the pencil sharpener in them and I think I have about 7 of them (all different). As they say, you can never have enough pencils, tape measures and clamps. |
Question: | In what country is this product made |
Answer: | They are amazingly accurate and I've owned several now and do finish carpentry. Everyone on my crew uses them because they always measure the same. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I just bought the 12" speed square, The slot that is supposed to hold the rise portion is way to large for the supplied 1/4" bolt? anyone else |
Answer: | Hi Tomer, Great question! This Speed Square, our model # S0101, does not include metric units of measurement. Our Metric Speed Square, model # NA202 (and available on Amazon.com) does have metric units of measurement. Hope that helps! The Swanson Team |
Question: | How can I request the EA 202 instruction book in German |
Answer: | Typically a framing square would be the most helpful with a roofing project. But if I had to choose one or the other, I guess the 12. While 7 is standard, it will not span the short dimension of the shingle. |
Question: | I am not a pro, I just want to do some wood working around the house here and there. Will this tool benefit me more than the 7inch version |
Answer: | Hi Henry, Absolutely, you can mark 45-degree cuts with our famous Speed Square! We manufactured it as a right triangle with that use in mind - its hypotenuse (the long side of the triangle) is an exact 45-degree angle. Thanks for your interest in our square! The Swnason Team |
Question: | Where is this square made |
Answer: | We proudly make all of our Swanson Speed Squares here in the United States. |

Question: | Packaging says stainless steel. Description says aluminum alloy. Which is it |
Answer: | I don't know & in 65 years I've never heard that question - If I was truly concerned about something that trivial I'd buy a precision square like Lufkin-Starrett or Brown & Sharpe at about 4 or 5 times the cost - if you use a pencil to mark you'll never know whether it's perfect or not. I'm very pleased with the quality of the Irwin for everyday shop work. |

User questions & answers
Question: | is this price for one thing |
Answer: | In terms of laser intensity or brightness (I hope this is what you mean by "up and down") there is no adjustment. There is only on and off. There is a pair of red tinted glasses with the kit which seem cheesy, but really are great for seeing the line in bright areas, even outside. My dad used them to level a retaining wall outside and you could barely see the line without the glasses but it was very visible with them. Hope this helps. |
Question: | How thick is the square accurately measured? thank you |
Answer: | The tripod only goes up 3 or 4 feet but I have found that I can set it on a step stool or table to bring it considerably higher - the thing levels itself whether it is on the ground or some other object - very useful tool for hanging pictures, drywall, wall studs, etc. |
- Size: 8" x 12"; Square accuracy: ±0.0573°

- Durable punching press finished graduations

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the width of each side? I am looking for one that is 1" on the short side and 1 1/2" on the long side |
Answer: | I just bought the same exact item from two different big box retailers. I bought and returned the first purchase because I assumed that the manufacturer had issued a recall on the item and the retailer had neglected to pull the existing stock from shelves. Because I was beginning a critical new stair job and I had chipped the pivot point on the 15 year old 12" speed square that I already owned, I bought another one from the second retailer. The product was defective from both retailers....and this is 10 months after your Sept. 2014 post.....apparently the problem has not been corrected by the manufacturer. |
Question: | Where is this item made |
Answer: | I can't help you with that but I can offer an alternative. Here is a PDF of the booklet http://www.oaklawnlibrary.org/documents/SpeedSquareInstructionBook2.pdf You can copy/paste whatever you need into a an online translator and make a printout. |
Question: | Will a magnet stick to this square |
Answer: | I work as a carpenter and i have both the 7inch and a 12inch version.I carry The 7inch speed square with me all the time and use it a lot, the 12inch sqaure i keep in the toolbox because it's size makes it unpractical to carry with me and to be honest I rarly take it out and use it, maybe once or twice a month. So as for using at home I would go for the 7inch.If you occasionally need to make a longer marking then 7inch you can lay a straight board along the 90 degree side, then remove the square and make your marking. That works really well:)Hope this was useful for you!/Claes |
Question: | What is the country of origin of this tool |
Answer: | Dont know but i personally think a framing square with stair guages works better, its kind of cheap quality |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the dimensions are painted on the speed square? or stamped |
Answer: | It seems like the main distributor is a company named Millennium Products. They have a small website you could check out. I would guess it's made in China or it would be advertised as made in USA. |
Question: | Are the speed squaret and l framing square both metal |
Answer: | No we use a much higher level of precision then typical chemical etching. We create our blade graduation lines and numbers on our blades on a hi-precision computer numerically controlled (CNC) laser engraving machine. This allows us to achieve center-of-graduation line-to-center-of-graduation line accuracies of : - In 1 Inch = 0.0004" - In overall 12 inchs = 0.004" - Line Center-to-Center of next line error = ±0.0025/12" - Blade Rockwell Hardness = >HRB117 You cannot achieve our certified levels of accuracy with chemical etching engraving method.
