Answer:	I think you had to line up tabs... I have had mine for a few years now, so don’t have to do the base anymore! I store the hanger “poles” out of the base though, for easier storage! I love mine!

Answer:	Each strand has their own battery. There is a small screw driver that comes in the box of 12 that you use to open the battery compartment. I've not had to do that.
