Answer:	I think it would work to catch fruit flies and gnats - as it works by sucking the pest into the chamber, but it may not keep them contained as the “doors” to the chamber are not air tight and I would think those tiny flies would get out. Straw is an excellent insulator and doesn't stay wet. Do not use hay, which would attract rodents. Strays might still be socialized enough to use a pad like this, but if they're feral, I think the crinkly noise it makes would scare them. I have two outside shelters and put this in one and put just a normal little pad I bought with a spongy filling and that is the one they use, not this one. My indoor cats don't use this one either. Not sure why, it is nice and soft but they like the other better.
