Question:	How important is a water test before chosing a filter system. And is rust also called iron eating bacteria
Answer:	Rust is not iron eating bacteria. Rust is ferric oxide, which is just iron combined with oxygen. Sulfur smells from iron rich water typically come from your water heater. The bacteria thrive on the metals in sacrificial anode rod in your water heater. Once the bacteria get in the water heater, you will need a powered anode rod and an iron removing system to fix the problem. For anyone on a well with iron, I recommend the following: 1) Get a powered anode rod to replace your sacrificial anode rode in your water heater. Do the chlorine or peroxide disinfection of the heater when installing to kill the existing bacteria. 2) Get this system. You may need to use an iron reducing filter in the third canister instead of a second carbon filter if your water softener isn’t reducing your iron to 0 parts per million, and put this system after the softener using iron reducing salt. 3) replace the filters as recommended without delay. 4) add a UV light sterilizer after these filters. These steps will immediately remove the sulfur and iron smell as the bacteria won’t have iron to eat, or be sustained from the magnesium in the standard anode rod in the water heater. My water went from cloudy brown and smelly to crystal clear perfection after doing this fix.

Question:	Anybody know the maximum flow rate in gallons per minute and/or the pressure drop across this (assuming new filters and 50 psi head pressure
Answer:	Depends on the filters used, pipe size and how it was installed. If you just want to know if you will have enough pressure to shower and use laundry machine or dishwasher. It will be fine as long as you don't use smaller than 3/4 inch supply in and out of this. I'd consider using pex if you want the best flow due to having much less fittings and elbows. I would say at minimum 5- 10 GPM. Hope this helps.

Q: With this whole house system, do I still need to install a water softener if my water is very hard?

A: Yes, a water softener is needed if your source water has a high level of hardness, usually with TDS higher than 700 PPM. Hard water can reduce the lifespan of whole house water filter cartridges. The harder the water, the greater amount of scale buildup occurs, and the sooner the filters get clogged.

This whole house water filter can remove up to 95% of sediment, chlorine, rust, pesticides, herbicides, industrial solvents, VOCs, and various other contaminants that a regular water softener can't, although it does not soften your water. It is recommended that you install this WGB21B series whole house system after your water softener to achieve optimal performance if you have hard water.

Answer:	Before getting the 400gpd I had a 90gpd unit and my waste orifice was a 300. I'm supposed to run an 800. It ran perfectly for 18 months until I upgraded to the 400gpd. So for me, imo, running the orifice they suggest is a waste of good water. Maybe that much waste is needed for nasty well water or something but my water is pretty dirty at 500ppm and after 18mo my ppm output was the same as the day it was new. When I bought the 400gpd unit I only increased my restrictor to 450 which is about 1/8th the size you're supposed to run. This time I decided to add a bypass to flush it which I made using an electronic solenoid valve so I can do so while sitting on my butt on the couch. I call it turbo flush and not really sure how important it is to do but I figured I'd add it considering how small the waste orifice ratio is now. The way I see it is one hard blast with one gallon is better than many gallons at a trickle. I have also considered removing the waste orifice altogether and only turbo flushing it now and then, but I'll give my current setup a year to see what happens. I'm not sure exactly how much filtered water I use but I est 50gal/week. Not sure what the waste is on that with my setup but I'm guessing 10-15gal? Plus a couple for turbo flushes. Side note; the first quart of "filtered" water that comes out when I first turn it on is whatever the tap is. So if my tap is 500ppm then 500ppm is what comes out, then it quickly tapers down to about 16ppm after a quart has passed through it. This has not changed since it was new and my fix is to dump that the first quart which I again use a solenoid for. Something to think about because if it only tops off a gallon or so at a time, which is typical, then that's really killing your water. So I'd be sure to buy a ppm tester to see if yours does that, but it's kinda a must have item anyway so you can check how the system is doing. Also note I have much higher water pressure so if that 450 orifice is not self regulating (mine is in a big plastic container which suggests it's not just a simple orifice) then I guess I'm wasting twice as much? I suppose I should measure it... Whatever it is it's still much better than the 100-150gal/week I'd waste if I followed the directions. Considering I live in a water starved part of the country I think that would make a massive difference if the millions of other people in my area did the same. I mean if they went through all the trouble to make expensive low water toilets and all kinds of other stuff to save water then this seems like a no-brainer. Another note: You won't get the rated gpd unless dumping it into a bucket. In a normal system you have ~60psi water pressure filling a 40psi storage tank. This is why I bought the 400gpd unit, because the 90 was taking too long. I forget my actual flow but it was more like 25gpd, so with the 400 I get more like 100gpd, which is what I originally wanted. Fyi. As for the bypass, you can make one using a couple Y or T fittings to go parallel to the waste orifice, and have a 1/4 turn valve in it so you can turbo flush whenever you like. You can get a kit here with all those fittings and some for like $10. Or like me, I use a solenoid instead which I think cost $10, and that is turned on/off via a wif outlet I control with my phone. This is also how I turn my system on/off because the normal automatic setup was not cutting it, so I have three solenoids altogether. Best of luck and hope the above helps.

Answer:	I should add that it does not dump water if it's plumbed correctly, because I've seen, more than once, where it was not and dumping 24/7. Speaking of wasted water, I also suggest a shutoff to greatly decrease your odds of coming home to a flooded kitchen. It happens a lot, maybe less now days but I've seen it and experienced it enough to think it's all but expected. I suggest a solenoid valve of some sort on a timer so if a hose pops off, fitting breaks, O-ring lets go or whatever while you're away or asleep it won't do too much damage. I use a cheap little $10 unit meant for these, plus I put a check valve after the outlet so the tank won't dump its contents either.

Question:	Would like to know how often filters need changing on avg. and how much they cost
Answer:	The gac and cto say to change them once every six months, the post carbon filter every year and the membrane every 2 years. Most manufacturers say to change your RO membrane once per year. I find the suggested replacement interval to be WAY too long on this unit for me. I am burning through RO membranes, so this time, I have decided to change to a different manufacturer. I also believe the gac and cto are going to need to be changed every 3 months. I think the reason I may be burning through membranes is because my tap water has a very high chlorine content, thus perhaps it is using up the pre carbon filters, and then chlorine is reaching the RO membrane which destroys it early. My tap water has a TDS of 370ppm. One thing is for sure, these filters are not "plug and play". They require constant maintenance and attention!
Question:	How much water is wasted per gallon to filter the water? I noticed the 6-stage was 2:1 (it said: only 2 gallons wasted for every gallon
Answer:	The ratio is the same, 2:1. Las Vegas's water rates are $1.16 per 10 thousand gallons. If you are paying comparable rates, it comes to about 2 cents per 10 gallons of filtered water. I've been using my system for a year now and probably should change the filters. The ppm reading out of the tap is 443 and 51 from my 5 stage system. I'm satisfied.

Answer:	Plants have different ph requirements, so you may want to invest in ph up and/or down with a testing kit and research which ph your plants require. My orchids require high acid but they get that with their food, I use water with a ph range 5.5 - 6.5 for my plants. :)
