9 best threshold for front door
A threshold for a front door is an important component of the door assembly. It serves several functions, primarily related to insulation, security, and aesthetics. Here's what you need to know about front door thresholds:
Functions and Features:
Weather Sealing: Front door thresholds are designed to seal the gap between the bottom of the door and the floor. This helps prevent drafts, dust, and moisture from entering the house, enhancing energy efficiency and interior comfort.
Insulation: They provide thermal insulation, ensuring that cold or hot air from outside does not easily transfer into the interior, thus helping in maintaining a consistent indoor temperature.
Security: Some thresholds come with additional features, such as a high ridge or a special design, to prevent forced entry. This enhances the overall security of the house.
Materials: Thresholds can be made from various materials, including wood, metal, vinyl, or a combination of materials. The choice of material depends on factors like climate, aesthetics, and durability requirements.
Adjustability: Some thresholds are adjustable, allowing homeowners to raise or lower them according to the door's height or to accommodate uneven flooring.
Aesthetics: Thresholds come in different designs and finishes to complement the overall look of the front door. They can be simple and functional or decorative, depending on the homeowner's preference.
Installation: Proper installation is crucial for the threshold to function effectively. It needs to be securely attached to the door frame and properly sealed to prevent water infiltration.
Types of Front Door Thresholds:
Standard Thresholds: These are flat and typically made of metal or wood, providing a basic seal at the bottom of the door.
Sill Caps: Sill caps fit over existing wooden sills and provide added protection against the elements.
Composite Thresholds: These thresholds are made from a combination of materials, such as wood and aluminum, offering a balance of durability and insulation.
Interlocking Thresholds: These thresholds have a unique design that creates a better seal when the door is closed, enhancing energy efficiency.
Slide-On Door Bottoms: While technically not thresholds, these are weatherstripping devices attached to the bottom of the door to block drafts and improve insulation.
In summary, choosing the right front door threshold is essential for maintaining a comfortable, energy-efficient, and secure home environment. Consider factors like material, adjustability, and weather resistance to select a threshold that best suits your needs. Proper installation ensures optimal performance and longevity.

User questions & answers
Question: | made out of alumium |
Answer: | Yes this is a long lasting product. You will have to do your own fitting |
Question: | What is the minimum gap between sill and door that this can reasonably fit into? My sill is not quite level so gap varies from about 1/4 to 5/8 in |
Answer: | I think it should work for that amount of gap. It has blades that touch the threshold and the part that the blades connect to looks less than 1/4 inch. Also, it is a soft, flexable rubber that will compress when the door is closed. |
Question: | Is this white or brushed nickel? The description has both listed |
Answer: | I ordered the brushed nickel and it was fairly close to the rest of the fixtures I was trying to match in the bathroom. This looks like the Brushed nickel. It's working fine on the door to the outside. |
Question: | Will this work with a metal door |
Answer: | It should work with any door that's 1 3/4 inch in thickness. |
Question: | This looks perfect, but i will not buy it since others show photos that it is only 1-1/2" wide, not 1-3/4" wide as stated. mfgr clarify |
Answer: | It fits my door which is 1-3/4 wide however the rubber piece on the bottom kept twisting so I removed it.. however I have a screen door so draft is not my issue I installed because they cut the door at installation too short |
Question: | Do you have bigger size , 2” 8 dash for garage doors |
Answer: | I think they do |
Question: | I need a rubber replacement slip, can you add the link for that please |
Answer: | it is called a replacement threshold insert, readily available at most hardware stores or here on Amazon for about $6. |
Question: | Will this seal a gap of about one inch between the door bottom and transom |
Answer: | If I were you I would cut an approximate 3/8 to 1/2 inch spacer and permanently glue / screw it to the bottom of the door first. for additional support. |

User questions & answers

Answer: | Read the discription as to lengths available!! |
Question: | Can you cut this? My door is 34 inches. Thanks |
Answer: | Yes you can it's made of aluminum plastic and wood I cut mine with a hacksaw no problem |
Question: | How do u screw this thing? Does the top brown plastic part come off for screws or they go from the top of the brown part or some other way? Thanks |
Answer: | I installed it for a garage entry door on cement and used construction adhesive underneath it to fix it in place. The vinyl on top does not come off, so you can’t really screw it down from the top. |
Question: | Can I get just the black plastic insert |
Answer: | No, this is stapled to a wood piece underneath. I haven’t been able to find a separate plastic piece, I did make an oak piece to replace it. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How well does this stand up to extreme winter cold temps (think -40, MN |
Answer: | Well I installed mine before the cold weather really started but this Winter has been unusually mild so far. Nevertheless, the threshold is pretty well made so I do not anticipate any issues. It was 15 degrees this morning and there was no draft from the door where this is located. |
Question: | How far apart are the holes for the screws |
Answer: | They were farther apart than the original holes in my concrete, so we drilled new holes in the threshhold so as not to have to drill new holes in concrete. The threshhold I replaced was 20 years old and had a 12" span between each hole. The span on this new on was more like 14". |
Question: | Can this be cut to accommodate a 30-inch door width |
Answer: | Yes!! I did the same as well. I used a hacksaw to cut the aluminum and scissors to cut the rubber |
Question: | My door has a 1" gap from the floor to door bottom. Is there a way to make this fill the whole gap? I see it only covers |
Answer: | I used a 1x4 piece of wood and mounted it to the ground then mounted the threshold to the wood. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can the strip be attached to the bottom of the door |
Answer: | Yes, that’s how I attached ours |
Question: | Is this a tripping hazard |
Answer: | Negative real soft material |
Question: | Can this be used on the top of the door as well |
Answer: | It can be placed on top of the door. But, that would increase drag on the door when you open and close it. |
Question: | How wide is it |
Answer: | Interesting question. Because you make it taller by making it skinnier it’s somewhere between an inch and inch and three-quarter’s approximately. As you squeeze the bottom sides togather it increases the height of the middle to actually make the seal on the bottom of the door |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used for an outswinging door |
Answer: | Generally, doors will be positioned to the side of the jamb that they swing to. This allows the hinges to operate without binding. Because of this, the depth or width of this threshold will stick out, considerably, from the side of the jamb that the door flushes with. To answer your question, Yes, but with acceptance of an unfinished look or with other modifications to the jamb and / or other trim at the base of the door. |
Question: | does this product come in 32" lenght |
Answer: | Not sure, buy it's made of aluminum and wood. Cuts easily. |
Question: | How does this mount? What keeps it down in the middle |
Answer: | First of all you don't put or install screws in the middle. First you install polyken flashing then a copper pan. You could use silicon to glue the threshold to the copper pan. I usually install new jams and I atach them to the threshold for a better seal. Anyway, thats me. Good Luck! |
Question: | Is there a vinyl weather stripping that goes on the bottom of the 36 inch door |
Answer: | Yes |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work on a 2 inch exterior door |
Answer: | No. It is for a 1 3/4" door. |
Question: | Do you offer this in a wider width? I have a 42" wide door |
Answer: | Unfortunately, this is the only size we carry. I will give you the contact number for the manufacturer. MD Building: 800-654-8454 |
Question: | Does it matter how much gap there is between the door bottom and the floor? Is this gap standard? I have a 36" wide door that opens to the garage |
Answer: | This weather strip is designed to be used with a threshold; otherwise the weather strip will drag the floor, mark the floor, and wear out.You should have at least a 1/2" tall threshold with a 1/4" to 5/16" gap between the door and the threshold, so that after the weather strip is installed it will fit tight against the threshold. You may have to cut the bottom of the door to achieve the desired fit. |
Question: | How does the door sweep attach to the bottom of the door |
Answer: | I just removed mine and the only thing attaching it to the boor bottom was some kind of adhesive. It's been on the door at least 5 years, possibly 16 if the original owners installed it. It was still perfectly attached. I'm replacing it because the vinyl was falling apart. |
