12 best bond deck stains
Bond deck stains are products used in the field of wood care and maintenance, specifically for outdoor wooden decks. These stains are designed to protect and enhance the appearance of wood decks while providing durability against weathering, UV rays, and other environmental factors. Here's some information about bond deck stains:
Protective Coating: Bond deck stains are formulated to act as a protective coating for wooden decks. They create a barrier that shields the wood from moisture, sunlight, and other elements that can cause damage and deterioration.
Enhanced Appearance: In addition to protection, these stains often contain pigments that can enhance the natural beauty of the wood. They come in various colors and finishes, allowing you to choose the one that complements your deck's aesthetics.
UV Resistance: Many bond deck stains are engineered to resist UV (ultraviolet) radiation, which can cause wood to fade and gray over time. UV-resistant stains help maintain the wood's original color and prevent it from becoming discolored or weathered.
Water Repellency: These stains often include water-repellent properties to prevent water from penetrating the wood. This is crucial for protecting against rot, mold, and mildew growth.
Longevity: Bond deck stains are designed to be long-lasting, reducing the need for frequent reapplication. The duration of protection can vary depending on the product and environmental conditions.
Application: They can typically be applied using various methods, including brushes, rollers, or sprayers. Proper surface preparation is essential for the stain to adhere effectively.
Wood Compatibility: It's important to choose a bond deck stain that is compatible with the type of wood used for your deck. Some stains are formulated specifically for hardwoods, while others work well with softwoods.
Maintenance: While bond deck stains offer protection, it's important to conduct regular maintenance to ensure the stain continues to perform effectively. This may include cleaning and reapplying the stain as needed.
Environmental Considerations: Some deck stains are available in environmentally friendly formulations that minimize the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the atmosphere.
Overall, bond deck stains are essential products for maintaining and prolonging the life of wooden decks. They offer protection against the elements while enhancing the deck's appearance, making them a valuable investment for homeowners looking to keep their outdoor spaces in top condition.

- 250 VOC COMPLIANT - Ships to all states except California. California residents can purchase DEFY Extreme 40, which is VOC Compliant in California.
User questions & answers
Question: | will this work in paint gun |
Answer: | yes it will, that's how I applied it. |
Question: | Will be applying to white cedar fence. How dry does the wood have to be |
Answer: | I did not heed the "one year" to dry on the new portion of my deck. Did old and new at the same time when the new portion was perhaps 2 months old. There was a definite difference. I washed and brightened both. Also did two coats. The 2nd coat was done while the first coat was still wet as per instructions. Also brushed vs. rolled. The stain seeped into the older wood much better and the color is richer. Don't believe the stain will last for years. In covered areas yes, it does. But my deck area that gets full S.Carolina sun, does not last the year. I re-stained last year and will be doing a layer of water proofing on horizontal surfaces this year in hopes that I won't have to stain again for a while. I am still happy that I bought the water based just because of the clean up and the ease of re-staining even if I feel I had to do it much quicker than if I had used oil based. |
Question: | Can I use this on my new cream colored bamboo blinds? Unsure about the method they were colored, but almost no sheen. Want stain protection in kitchen |
Answer: | Hard to say without looking at the wood , but if the wood still looks porous enough we're the Stain can soak in some I would think a light coat possibly 2 would do it. It's very thin milky color but dries clear |
Question: | I am applying this to a fence. Would you recommend it for fences? Also, if you have used this product how well is it holding up |
Answer: | Using it for 10 years, great on fences. Apply W weed oil sprayer. Brush W 4" throw away brush as needed. Time between coats varies W the look you want. 2-3 years looks great. At 5 years fading is noticeable. Apply when cool. Dampen surfaces to get soak in. |
Question: | Can I use this on kitchen cabinets made with walnut veneer? My goal is to keep the natural raw, light look but also see the grain, not milky |
Answer: | No, don’t use on kitchen cabinets. Instead use water base polyurethane. Easy clean up and is just as good as oil base polyurethane. |
Question: | Can this be used to seal laminate flooring |
Answer: | It is not for interior use. Also you cannot stain , paint or varnish over Seal-Once products. Seal-Once must be applied to raw wood. |
Question: | Can this be used over an oil base stain |
Answer: | No. |
Question: | What’s the best product for Douglas fir pergola |
Answer: | No, this Seal Once product is not made for pergola floors, it has a dull finish. Not shiny. I would think you would want a poly eyrthane, which is durable and has a shine, recommend a semi-gloss. I would suggest you go to Sherwin Williams and consult their opinion. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the warranty on this |
Answer: | I don't believe there is any warranty. We applied it two years ago and the covered areas still look good. The section in direct Sun...needs to have it applied again. |
Question: | How long can the product be stored once the container is opened |
Answer: | We actually used some that we had stored in our garage that was left over from the last time we stained our siding and that was in the summer of 2012, 6 yrs ago. When we removed the lid, it looked like it had become a gel but my husband used a drill with a paint mixer/stirrer tool and it became liquefied again. We applied it to the siding without incident and the color matched the new 5 gallon containers we bought this summer . |
Question: | I have 275 ft of fence plus a gate- what's the coverage with using a sprayer |
Answer: | I’m in the process of staining my fence (I am using a different brand) with a semi-transparent stain. I have 187’ of fence at 5’ high including 2 gates. Applied with a roller and brush, I’m going to need around 13 gallons. My recommendation is rent a sprayer from Home Depot. You’ll save time and money as you’ll use less product and it will go much much faster. |
Question: | we have a heavy dining set and i am worried about scratches after i stain, how does it hold up to heavy chairs moving back and forth |
Answer: | I have a deck/patio furniture set, including a cast iron umbrella base. Lots of use over the last year with no evidence of scratches in the deck. The stain penetrates the wood rather than building a barrier so dragging stuff across the boards won't take it off provided the wood is properly prepared. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How much out gassing does this do |
Answer: | While it is certainly likes the sun for 'curing', as long as you have natural heat you will be ok. Part of our 3,700 sf deck is in direct sunlight while a small (maybe 10%) is shaded part of the day. We are in Northern West Virginia and treated 7 years ago this month with the Natural color. While it still beads water, the 'color' has finally faded enough that I am about to order the next application in Red Cedar. The reason for the color change is that the higher the pigment, the less the fade. I am one happy customer! |
Question: | Bond distributing one time 00300 stain/sealer redwood - is the actual color more orangey, brownish, or reddish |
Answer: | I used this on my new deck 7 years ago, much of the deck is in the shade. The product has been great and only now am I considering a reapplication. It did take a while to dry, but I did it whe it was hot out, and it dried in time for a community house tour in a week, 80 people walked on it and it was fine. It still looks great, no peeling just a little fading. I would recommend it to any one. Who wants to retreat every two years! This really did last 7. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How many squre feet does one gallon cover |
Answer: | The stain is really good. I used in about 9 yrs ago so I don't remember if it had a strong odor or a residual odor. I used it on an outdoor deck however. I'm hoping to restain in a couple of weeks, so if you ask again later I may have a better answer for you. |
Question: | What size container is this? 4lbs or 9 lbs |
Answer: | I would say a little on the orange side. It looks good, though. |
Question: | is this oil based or water based |
Answer: | I am not sure I understand your question. You can purchase, from my experience, quarts - which would be about right for an $88 gallon container when broken down. This is great stuff and I can not speak highly enough about it. Only think I would advise up front is to go with a color that has more tint than the Natural. I have a 3,200+ sf deck that was originally finished in the Natural. When I had to reapply 8 years later I moved to the Cedar finish and am happy with the amount of fade the past couple of years. Will more than likely stay with the Cedar when it needs done six years from now. Hope that helps you out a bit! |
Question: | Can it be sprayed on |
Answer: | Did you shake it before you started ? I have not experienced your problem . I brush it on ,leave it in the sun, brush out all wet spots the next day, give it more sun until it can be worked with. Good luck. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How effective is this compared to other wood preservative products--green/brown/copper stains--you have used for wood touching ground |
Answer: | It is not as effective as tinted products. I apply it every year, and it seems to have extended the life of my 22-year-old cedar deck. It's not great, but I think that's the cost of using a clear product. The deck gets a lot of snow. And there is one area that never sees the sun. Those boards never get to dry completely, and 2 of them needed to be replaced after about 20 years. Those that do get some sun are still solid. |
Question: | Can I use this to coat wooden clipboards to protect from liquids |
Answer: | Thompsons Water Seal will protect anything made of wood. Just paint the TWS on with a brush and let dry for 24 hours and apply a second coat. Make sure you coat the edges really well also. |
Question: | What is product sheen ? I want a matte / satin when dried. This is for cedar posts on a covered deck, doesn't see much sun or rain. Thanks |
Answer: | Not too much sheen. Great product for our fence. |
Question: | Is this appropriate for ground-contact Douglas Fir for kids sandbox/playset? Trying to avoid pressure-treated and the cost of redwood if possible |

For exterior use only. To avoid overexposure, if treating enclosed exterior rooms or porches, open windows and doors or use other means to ensure fresh air entry during application and drying. Question: | What can safely used as a wood preservative for raised vegetable beds |
Answer: | No |
Question: | Can this be used in a sauna |
Answer: | It is plant based and so does not contain the same harsh chemicals as other wood sealers. If you choose it, apply the product according to the instructions and be sure to wipe off any excess sealer. However, if your children have any sensitivities to cleaners or chemicals I would suggest leaving the wood unsealed. If you have additional questions give us a call at 267-614-1885. |
Question: | Can this be used over a stained deck |
Answer: | You can buy the cleaner on Amazon. The cleaner helps prepare the surface and is ideal but not absolutely necessary. |
Question: | Can this be used for sealing wood to make a hot tub |
Answer: | Yes it would. Ensure there are no other dealers or coatings on the wood. If so, remove it by sanding or stripping. Ideally apply the product outside with a deck stain pad or brush. Wipe off all the excess with a rag (very important). Let it cure for 24-48 hours prior to use in a shower. |

Answer: | Yes it comes with the case shown |
Question: | Can this be used in lieu of painters tape and achieve a nice straight line? I am painting a bedroom and hate cutting in using painters tape |
Answer: | It's possible but it would only hold a couple of oz before it would come out the vent and at .8 mm it would have to be very thin paint. They offer a full size gun with a 20 oz cup and the vents are generally able to accommodate greater gun angle. Ceiling suggest a house application, 20 oz goes fast go with a roller and a paint bucket would be much faster and have better results |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this product accept wood stain at all |
Answer: | Yes, but to control the amount of pigment, I have always sealed the filler 1st, and matched the background color of the wood grain, sealed again, then added the actual wood color on top of the 2nd coat of sealer, then sealed again, painted in grain lines and sealed again. Sealer = lacquer, polyurethane, etc. Usually using a spray finish.. |
Question: | Can kwikwood be used for rotted wood repair? the window sill has rotted area with high moisture content.the product label mentions dry rot |
Answer: | Yes, but dry rot has to be removed and wood needs to be dried out, for a good base for a stable application...also how large of an area is involved needs to be considered. If larger than 3"x3"×2" deep..I would considered a different filler, a bondo type for wood repair, available at most hardware stores, that's more spreadable...for larger holes. |
Question: | can this be used to replace the corner of a wooden drawer that is broken off |
Answer: | Absolutely. I used it to replace a few corners and patch nail holes |
Question: | Once you open the package do you have to use it all at once or can you reseal it and save it for another day |
Answer: | I used about 2/3's of a package. Resealed. Used about half of remaining a week later. Resealed. Still seems usable except portion I accidently put in contact. Is binary thick paste, like modeling clay. To activate, must kneed together with fingers quite a bit. Hardens in about 15 minutes. RH |
