Knobbies create rolling resistance and not ideal unless you are truly off-roading. I am on my second set of Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires for my Xtracycle which is used primarily for running to the grocery store, picking up the kids at school, local errands, weekend jaunts, camping trips, etc. They roll exceptionally well and have outstanding grip on pavement. I rode the first set for nearly 3 years and 4000+ miles; the side walls are strong and can withstand the daily abuse of 300 pounds between me, the kids and groceries. They are very strong, durable and reliable tires. I don't carry a pump, patches, tools or tubes because I know I won't get a flat. At the end of life for the tires, that's when the blue puncture stuff is showing, I inspected the tires and realized they withstood massive amounts of debris, there were little cuts around the entire surface, I suspect that was all the glass, nails, etc. that I ride through daily but still no flats. Amazing how well they hold up, best tires I ever owned. They are okay on packed gravel too. I take the kids backcountry camping on the back of the Xtracycle with all the gear and the tires do well on the trail. I'll be riding these for many years, very happy with them.
