1. The automatic range digital multimeter has a large internal resistance (high input impedance), and there is induced voltage interference when open circuit. The AC DC gear will have a digital jump when it is turned on, but it will not affect the measurement.

Question:	Does the volt meter itself ever need recharging
Answer:	You have to replace the battery at some point!Maybe soon if you leave it on!
Question:	could this measure down to say 0.1 ohms
Answer:	If you really need to measure extremely low resistances accurately, you can get a power supply that you can set for a constant current of 1A, and put it through your test load. Then put your meter in the DC millivolt range and read across the load. It will display the resistance in millohms, so a reading of 100 mV would correspond to 0.1 ohms. Few people need to measure such small resistance values, but some specialized things like coils and inductors have test specifications down in those ranges.
Question:	Help. i have a short or bad ground somewhere in my automobile, battery and alt new - i think wires going to the pcm. will this help identify? thanks
Answer:	This is called a parasitic draw and a multi step process can isolate it down to a single component. You start with checking the draw on the battery. Remove the negative terminal and set the meter to 10 AMPS with the black lead plugged into the the COM connector female on the bottom and the red plugged into 10 amp female on the far left. Clamp the black lead to the negative battery cable connector that you removed and touch the red lead to the negative terminal. If you get a reading higher than a quarter of an amp you the battery is discharging and depending on the draw it will run down over night. A tip: Make sure everything is off in the car by closing the doors and removing the bulb from courtesy engine compartment light. If the bulb is inaccessible just duct tape the switch down. Also if you entered the car to pop the hood you should wait for the computer to go back to sleep - about 20 minutes - before running the test. If there is a draw you should start isolation by pulling fuses - when you pull the right fuse the reading will drop to 1/4 amp or so. The fuse fronts a wiring harness bundle and you can see what circuits it is protecting on a schematic - first thing to check are switches on the bundle and any after market additions to the harness. Most times it will be an open switch but a poor installation of additional lights or accessories is also a high suspect spot for a short. If a switch replace it or even just open it (turn it off). If a short you need to isolate the individual circuit on the harness bundle. Short isolation is a difficult time consuming task and rather than describe it I recommend that you watch this video on YOUTUBE. It is the best I have found for going all the way to the source of a short. Second tip is to have a helper with the fuse pulling and remember that some vehicles have 2 or 3 fuse boxes. Question:	Can this multimeter be used on vehicles for a parasitic load test? I don't want to spend over $400 for the Fluke 88 as it is for personal vehicle use
Answer:	it has been used on motorbikes for sure. It just needs to be in amp mode. If you're doing parasitic load, then you're focused on DC Amps. The 117 has up to 6, while the 88 has up to 10. I don't see a big issue as you're just doing parasitic, not actual use. If anything actually pulls more than 6, you'll blow the internal fuse and have to replace it, but that's about it. Shouldn't be a problem(I've just tested mine on my car and it works).
Question:	What are the differences to pick between the Fluke 117 and the Fluke 115? My intended use would for ham radio and kit-building of electronic kits

Be aware of none of these 'electrician' Flukes (115/116/117) read milliamps or microamps -- essential for electronics troubleshooting & design work but unnecessary for electrician tech work. That said, when reading current in amps they do seem to read accurate down to around at least 0.010 amps (10 milliamps) or so.

Answer:	The only major differences between the 116 and 117 are thermometer and non-contact voltage detection features, the 116 having the thermometer but not non-contact. I would make a conclusion that HVAC technicians would have more use for a thermometer on the job, where electricians have more use for non-contact.

Answer:	Good question. and I can't find an answer it doesn't say but in the picture when it's showing someone testing continuity it shows that it's beeping what it doesn't say that it does beat and we've got two people on here that say it does not and two people that say that it does so good luck I'm looking for one that is audible myself why all multimeters don't have an audible noise when you have continuity I will never know either that or you can have one that has a paper thin needle that jumps and you can't see it and you have to take your eyes off of what you're working on to see if you have continuity and when you move your head you lose contact and it's such a pain in the ass

Question:	Can this handle being plugged into a wall socket? Also, can someone give a walkthrough of how to safely test a socket
Answer:	plug the red lead into the meter socket marked COM and the black into the center meter socket. Set the dial to V~ (for AC volts) on the 200 scale (for household current) insert one probe lead into each of the wall socket's vertical slots and move them around a bit inside the outlet slots to make sure you're getting a good connection, if in doubt plug a lamp or something into the socket. If you suspect the outlet socket itself has failed carefully remove the wall plate in order to access the actual wires connected to the outlet to be sure it's either a dead circuit or the outlet itself has failed.

Answer:	Yes, with the baclklight on, it's viewable from straight-on to tilted away from yourself, but with the top tilted towards you it loses all contrast. Side-to-side viewing angle is a good. This is a common trait among some LCD displays.
Question:	I want to measure current flowing to my car starter when cranking engine. Does this clamp on meter measure DC current when using clamp
Answer:	Yes, It can read DC starting current with the clamp when set to DC measurement. Reading moves fast but I take video with mobile phone camera and rewind to see the 268A when starting a Nissan Frontier 2.5 L engine. Reasonable current though I cannot check its accuracy yet. I buy meter to monitor DC charging current and confirm non-running car leaking currents under 50mA but need to wait 20 minutes after engine off to let car computer stabilize from initial shutoff which can cab be as high as 0.6A. With this meter, I also find about 10mV leaking voltage on plastic surface between terminals at new battery (due to acid filling spill at manufacturing?) from club store which I need to reduce the Voltage drop to less than 0.1 mV by scribing several grooves on plastics surface around terminal posts. Calibrate to zero by holding Z/F button few seconds before measurement can help read accuracy. I am happy with this meter for the price. Hope you too if do not have time to find a better cheaper on
Question:	how accurate is th DC current measurment
Answer:	I have not checked it against a reference, but I have done some measurements on my car with this. It seemed to reflect a reasonable value when the battery charger was on, showing charging current. and It showed a big current for the started that was believable. When you first set it, you can press a zero button to zero it out. Then I looked at a really bad solar panel that could only put out about 50 milliamps when shorted, and it was able to show that pretty well. So the bottom line, if you are going to use this for debugging stuff, it seems pretty good. If you are going to measure calorie input to control a chemical reactions in a pharmaceutical lab, I can't say. For me, it is just cool that it can do a DC current in the first place. Has already come in handy as I was able to determine my alternator was not charging my battery quite easily.

Answer:	This multimeter is not good for computer repair. While it is accurate it doesn't have milli or microamps, which is very necessary for troubleshooting computers. You would need something like the Fluke 177 (a little more than 100 dollars more) and has microamps, or you could get something like a B&K Precision 2708B, which has milli and microamps. Also the B&K Precision is less than 100 dollars, so I would say for a budget meter it's the best considering its ability. I've watched reviews on dozens of multimeters, and the B&K Precision 2708B is pretty quick and quite accurate, especially at its price point.
