14 best hvac meters
HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) meters, also known as multi-testers or testers, are essential tools used by HVAC technicians and electricians for various diagnostic and measurement purposes in the HVAC industry and electrical work. These meters are versatile instruments capable of measuring different electrical properties. Here's some information about HVAC meters:
Types of HVAC Meters: HVAC meters come in various types, each designed for specific measurements and applications. The common types include:
- Multimeters: These are versatile meters that can measure voltage, current, resistance, and sometimes other parameters like capacitance and frequency.
- Clamp Meters: Designed to measure current without direct electrical contact, clamp meters can measure AC current by clamping around a conductor.
- Infrared (IR) Thermometers: These meters measure temperature by capturing the infrared radiation emitted by an object, making them useful for HVAC technicians to check heating and cooling systems.
Voltage Measurement: HVAC meters can measure both AC (Alternating Current) and DC (Direct Current) voltage levels, allowing technicians to test electrical circuits, outlets, and components.
Current Measurement: With clamp meters or traditional multimeters with current measurement capabilities, HVAC technicians can measure the current flowing through wires and circuits. This is crucial for diagnosing electrical problems and ensuring the safe operation of HVAC equipment.
Resistance Measurement: HVAC meters can check the resistance of electrical components like resistors, switches, and heating elements. This helps identify faulty components.
Temperature Measurement: Some HVAC meters, particularly IR thermometers, can measure temperature without physical contact. This is useful for checking the performance of heating and cooling systems.
Continuity Testing: HVAC meters often include a continuity test function, which emits an audible beep or displays a reading to indicate whether a circuit is complete or open. This is valuable for identifying broken wires or connections.
Capacitance Measurement: Advanced HVAC meters may have capacitance measurement capabilities, which are useful for testing capacitors in HVAC systems.
Frequency Measurement: Some meters can measure the frequency of AC signals, helping technicians troubleshoot electrical issues.
Data Logging and Recording: Certain HVAC meters offer data logging and recording features, allowing technicians to capture and analyze measurements over time.
Safety Features: HVAC meters are designed with safety in mind and often include features such as overload protection, insulated probes, and rugged construction to withstand the demands of the field.
Display: Most HVAC meters have a digital LCD display that shows measurement readings clearly, making it easy for technicians to interpret the results.
Auto-Ranging: Many multimeters have auto-ranging capabilities, which means they automatically select the appropriate measurement range, simplifying the measurement process.
In summary, HVAC meters, including multimeters, clamp meters, and IR thermometers, are essential tools for HVAC technicians and electricians working in the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning industry. They provide the means to measure various electrical parameters, temperature, and continuity, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of HVAC systems. Proper training and knowledge are crucial when using these meters to diagnose and maintain HVAC equipment.

Fluke 902 FC True-rms HVAC Clamp Meter
The Fluke 902 FC True-rms HVAC Clamp Meter, a wireless Fluke Connect-enabled meter, improves the productivity of HVAC technicians in the field. The rugged dual rated - CAT III, 600 /CAT IV, 300 V - meter performs the essential measurements of HVAC systems such as microamps for testing pilot light sensors, resistance up to 60 kilohms, AC current, AC/DC voltage, capacitance and contact temperature. The 902 FC eliminates the need to carry multiple tools. Its small body is easy to hold and the jaw fits perfectly in tight work spaces.
As part of Fluke Connect—the industry's largest system of software and more than 40 wireless test tools—the 902 FC can transmit measurements to a smartphone or tablet for detailed analysis later. Those measurements can be uploaded to the cloud. Technicians can combine measurement data from multiple Fluke Connect test tools to create and share reports from the jobsite via email and collaborate in real time with other colleagues with ShareLive video calls or email, increasing productivity in the field.
The clamp meter also decreases the frequency that technicians will need to wear personal protective equipment when working on high voltage/current panels. Simply turn off the panel, verify the panel is de-energized using standard safety procedures, place the clamp and sync it to a smartphone with the Fluke Connect app, close the panel, reenergize it, and take measurements from a safe distance.
Troubleshoot faster
Instantly trend and monitor intermittent problems with TrendIt graphs so you can easily identify trends and stop problems before they happen.
Improve safety
Connect your meter to your phone through Bluetooth, clamp your meter around a conductor and walk up to 30m (100 ft) away from the point of measurement for added flexibility. You can be in two places at once and reduce the risk of arc flash by separating yourself from hazardous measurement situations.
Save time reporting
Easily create reports with the measurements you have taken with your meter and email them right from the field. Save your measurements directly from your meter to a chronological list on your phone for easy transcribing. Organize your measurements by asset in one location.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the meter come with a magnet on the back ? If not, how can I have the meter stay on a metal surface instead holding the meter with my hand |
Answer: | No magnet. Leads are long to be able to set it somewhere while measuring, or if there is something to clamp the meter to, you can go that route. Maybe you can find a magnetic strap (with Velcro) to strap around the meter. |
Question: | Can the temp prob be calibrated by the owner? Can it read negative numbers? i.e. Freezer temps |
Answer: | The 325 will only go down to 14 degrees F and the meter lacks an offset adjustment. If the customer has access to a metrology lab we do publish the calibration procedures. Probes would typically be verified by a drywell calibrator. |
Question: | How is the temperature taken? Contact or infrared |
Answer: | Fluke 324 takes temperature by contact, it uses a thermocouple. |
Question: | Does the Fluke 324 measure DC Amps via the clamp |
Answer: | I am posting for other readers, One person who answered stated you can not read DC current with a clamp, this meter is AC current only but they do make clamps that can measure DC current, they are considerably more expensive, I own one and it I have used it on 12Volt Dc systems (cars) and it works pretty good. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How small of DC current can this measure? 5mA and lower |
Answer: | I'm afraid not. According to the instruction manual, in the lowest DC current range (60.00A) the resolution is 10mA. The accuracy is +/-(2.0% + 8 digits). |
Question: | Can these test between 3 phase circuits? Thanks |
Answer: | Yes it can, I don't trust it to do it because of the jumps in voltage that happens when it is lightly tapped |
Question: | Does it come with a case |
Answer: | Yes, Klein does package this meter to be included with a case. |
Question: | Does this meter handle run/start capacitors in hvac work |
Answer: | Yes this meter and Fluke 324 check capacitance, but the Fluke 324 will NOT check Max amperage nor starting amperage of an air conditioning compressor like this meter does. The Fluke 325 does but is almost $300. |
