12 best pir sensors
Passive Infrared (PIR) sensors are electronic devices commonly used in motion-activated switches, wall switches, and other applications related to electrical and home improvement. PIR sensors are designed to detect motion by sensing changes in infrared radiation in their immediate surroundings. Here's what you should know about PIR sensors:
Working Principle: PIR sensors detect motion based on the principle that all objects emit infrared radiation (heat) to some extent. When an object moves within the sensor's field of view, it causes a change in the infrared radiation patterns, which the sensor can detect.
Components: A typical PIR sensor consists of two or more pyroelectric sensors, a lens, and circuitry for signal processing. The pyroelectric sensors generate an electrical signal when exposed to changes in temperature caused by moving objects.
Motion Detection: PIR sensors are highly sensitive to changes in temperature, making them effective for detecting human or animal motion. They are commonly used in security systems to trigger alarms or lights when motion is detected.
Field of View: PIR sensors have a specific field of view (FOV) or detection range, which can vary depending on the sensor's design. Some sensors have a wide FOV, while others are more narrow and focused.
Sensitivity and Time Delay: PIR sensors often come with adjustable sensitivity and time delay settings. Sensitivity controls the threshold at which motion is detected, while time delay determines how long the sensor remains active after detecting motion.
Applications: PIR sensors are widely used in residential and commercial settings for various purposes, including:
- Motion-activated lighting: PIR sensors are commonly used in outdoor and indoor lighting systems to automatically turn lights on when motion is detected and off when no motion is present.
- Security systems: PIR sensors play a crucial role in burglar alarms and security cameras, triggering alarms or recording when unauthorized motion is detected.
- Energy efficiency: PIR sensors are used in energy-saving applications, such as automatically turning off lights or HVAC systems when a room is unoccupied.
- Automatic doors: PIR sensors are often used in automatic sliding doors and entry systems to detect the presence of people approaching.
Limitations: PIR sensors have limitations. They may not detect stationary objects or slow-moving targets effectively. Additionally, they can be susceptible to false triggers caused by sudden changes in temperature, such as hot air blowing past the sensor or direct sunlight.
Cost and Availability: PIR sensors are widely available and relatively affordable, making them a popular choice for motion detection applications.
In summary, PIR sensors are essential components in motion-activated switches, security systems, and various home improvement applications. They work by detecting changes in infrared radiation caused by moving objects and are valued for their ability to provide automation, energy savings, and security in various settings.

Question: | Can I use this with a microbit |
Answer: | I am not familiar with the litemyfire so I can not compare. These rods are approx 3" long with the thickness of a pencil. They come in a really nice container with loops. Container can work as a great tinder box as well. |
Question: | Can i hook this directly to the item i want to switch? it’s dc current |
Answer: | The material of the 2 products is the same. The big one is easier to get sparks because of more interface with scraper. However, if you believe your scraper is excellent, you can also get tons of sparks from the small rods. The blade of an art knife is a good scraper. Check out our video of the 1/2 rod: https://youtu.be/3EtjPNZnwFQWe'll post a video of the small rods soon later. Please subscripe our channel. |
Question: | How would you describe the range and sensitivity of these? I need to detect when motion stops in a 12x14 room of people |
Answer: | I would venture to say that they are much too large for that. Besides, there is only one hole on one end, you'd need one on each end to properly hold it in place. For what you want to do, I'd recommend checking these out: https://www.amazon.com/bayite-Survival-Drilled-Paracord-Bracelet/dp/B00PSGOH3C/ref=sr_1_1?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1484308685&sr=1-1&keywords=Flint+stick+drilled |
Question: | Is the sensitivity adjustable |
Answer: | No,they come in a plastic bag and that bag is put into a bubble-pack envelope. I think they are a great value. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is it possible to eliminate any delay, so the trigger is almost instantaneous |
Answer: | When these sensors say "delay" it means how long the sensor stays in its "on" state after being triggered. So having a 2 second delay means that when motion is detected, the sensor immediately goes to its "on" state and stays "on" for 2 seconds after the motion is detected. There is do delay in detection. |
Question: | How much output current will it handle |
Answer: | It cannot directly drive very much. It would need to be boosted with some sort of driver, a transistor or something else that can handle more current. I doubt that the output can drive more than10ma. The output will be the same voltage that you supply the device with, but the amount of current it can handle is small. |
Question: | Does anyone know the max out current? Thanks |
Answer: | It does not exactly say, but the mention that is for "Internal use of digital signal processing" this implies that it supplies a voltage for a digital Input, but low current. Additional components such as Transistors or MOSFETs could be used to increase the current if you want to direct drive something. |
Question: | Can i wire these in between 5v led strip lights and 5v usb output |
Answer: | I assume you are wanting to use this to turn on and off your led lights. you can use it as a trigger to turn them on but it can not power them directly. You would need a relay or MOSFET that can take a control signal. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What do these sensors do? What do they react to |
Answer: | I have 4 of the blue chairs, the color is not teal or navy. The photo is almost exactly how it looks in person. |
Question: | Can the sensor range be adjusted |
Answer: | I wouldn’t say they would be too small, and they are comfortable enough to sit and talk. This is definitely not a lounging chair, or binge tv chair. We have four of them in our office, for customers, so they do not get a lot of continuous use like that. They are great looking and get a lot of compliments. |
Question: | How can you tell which prong is ground, neutral or hot |
Answer: | They are definitely more for looks. Comfy isn’t a word I would use to describe them. I’m 5’8”. It is definitely a nice chair though. |
Question: | How long do these supply power after triggering |
Answer: | It's faux velvet. The chair pad has a zipped cover that can be removed. |

User questions & answers
Question: | is it suitable with all kinds of wired systems |
Answer: | Great question! The “lip” as it is called in the industry, allows for the chair mat to extend under the desk to protect the floor under the desk from a persons feet and also prevent Desk Chair wheels from rolling off the front end of the Chair Mat. The “lip” is NOT a beveled or tapered edge (industry terms) around the mat’s circumference. Many buyers get the lip confused with what is called a “beveled” or “tapered” edge. We do not make a chair mat with that feature. |
Question: | Is there an app for this |
Answer: | Thank you for the question! As long as it is being used with a common residential oxygen concentrator, this would be a good resting spot. We would warn that unrolling and flattening the mat will require some physical effort as the material is stiff being shipped rolled up. Also, the concentrator should be semi-fixed to the area of the desk chair mat as it may not slide off and back onto the mat easily. We have no experience or testing in trying to move a similar machine off and back onto the mat, but in theory, it should work. Please let us know if you have any other questions! |
Question: | So Is it wired 2 wires for Power input and 2 wires forsensor output? Thanks |

Question: | When set at it's highest sensitivity, will it detect small rodents like rats or squirrels |
Answer: | The mat is to thin, it leaves wheel dents and is difficult to manage on carpet. It might be OK on a hard surface. |
- 【Motion Activated】 : Sensor function triggered by motion, you can use this small motion sensor switch to control lighting like Led strip lighting.
- 【Light Sensor Adjustable】: This function allows you to use the motion sensor in different ambient condition, for example, you set the light sensor value to 20 lux, when the room ambient light value is above 20 lux, the light won’t turn on, but when room ambient light value is less than 20 lux, the sensor can turn light on when motion detected within sensing range.
- 【Delay Time Adjustable- Please set this to its minimum value first then try to figure out your values for the Sensitivity and Light Sensor- this will save your time】: The delay time controls how long the light stays on once it gets triggered, during the delay time if motion detected, the delay time will reset and start a new delay time.
- 【Sensitivity Adjustable】: The sensitivity controls how close you need to be to the sensor in order to activate it.
- 【Wide Application】: You can use this sensor in different occasions like entryway lighting, cabinet lighting, gun safe lighting, pantry lighting, under the bed rails lighting.
User questions & answers
Question: | Will only humans presence activate this? Or can u set it up for lets say if a ball rolls passed it, it will trigger |
Answer: | These are "passive infra-red". I'm pretty certain that whatever moves in front of it has to have a heat signature in order to trigger the switch. Our cats set it off, which is why I purchased these. However, there is a calendar on the wall right next to it and it does not trigger when the wind blows the calendar all over the place. |
Question: | Bought this sensor for gun safe setup but it doesn't seem to turn off at all. Made adjustments as suggested. Any ideas |
Answer: | Turn the delay time all the way down. Maybe slightly turned the opposite direction (from the no delay position). If you've got a light that turns on (assuming you do) that helps with calibration (so you have something to look at and see if it's working or not). Look at the manual, pop it open and there are three potentiometers one of them is the duration that it stays on. |
Question: | Would this be a sensor I would be able to wire into a small ring box to turn on a light when the box is opened |
Answer: | You said the ring box was small, You would be better off just using a micro switch and do the same thing |
Question: | How many amps is this rated for |
Answer: |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do i have to add arduino or will it turn light on/off by itself? How long will light stay on |
Answer: | Yes, you can, but you need correct cable , female dupont cable with Alligator Clip Test Lead |
Question: | Does this product have an actual spec sheet with clear dimension |
Answer: | WRCoyle is pretty much wrong on their answer. I'm assuming you want to turn electricity on to another device with this? The answer to that is no. This provides a logic output that is high when it is triggered and low when on standby. The BISS0001 chip on this has the output pin rated for 10mA and it goes straight to the out pin on the board, no transistor used to handle more power. It can run a regular LED using a resistor to limit the LED to 10mA or less. Beyond that, you will need a transistor or solid state relay or some other setup to handle any amount of current. |
Question: | how do you wire this thing |
Answer: | It will sense any movement (heating moving paper) in a room of that size |
Question: | Any way to change the delay time |
Answer: | Yes there are two pots on the board you can use to adjust. Check the web for how to do it. |
Product description
PIR sensors are used to detect motion from pets/humanoids from about 20 feet away (possibly works on zombies, not guaranteed). This one has an adjustable delay before firing (approx 2-4 seconds), adjustable sensitivity and we include a 1 foot (30 cm) cable with a socket so you can easily reposition the sensor or mount it using the two drills on either side Runs on 5V-16V power (if you need to run it off of 3V you can do that by bypassing the regulator, but that means doing a bit of soldering). Digital signal output is 3.3V high/low. Sensing range is about 7 meters (120 degree cone) There are many tutorial available on Adafruit's website for these sensors!
- Detect motion up to 7 meters away
- Perfect for Raspberry Pi or Arduino Projects
- Easy to use
- Requires soldering of header pins
User questions & answers
Question: | Where is the sensor on this board and how big is it |
Answer: | Can be used independently |
Question: | Can I use two of these sensors to determine distance between them |
Answer: | No |
Question: | Does it come with the wire it shows in the picture? Some reviews make it seem like it may not |
Answer: | I should think so. You just need a way of reading the values coming from the sensor to detect motion. |
Question: | I am trying to get these to drive the coil on these relays, but its not a strong enough signal to trip them. What am I doing wrong |
Answer: | Depends on the sensitivity setting. I have had no problems in the 2 to 3 meter range which is perfect for my uses. Also, this is an infrared sensor that senses motion, so if your surface is stationery, you might consider an ultrasonic sensor instead. |
User questions & answers
Question: | Installing 2 led strips along the 32' path (outdoors). Need switches on both ends of the path. Will these switches do the job if install parallel |
Answer: | Vladislav, I believe that you are correct. If in parallel, either sensor should turn on the lights. |
Question: | i have power adapter ac 100-240v 50/60hz output 24v dc 2000ma with sensky bs010 12v 24v pir with apentek led lights, it isnt working. please help |
Answer: | Daniel,The PIR is not very responsive, so you may need to adjust the sensitivity. In fact this sensor detects motion via Infrared. So if you have it in a warm location, it is pretty much "blind".The data sheet includes shows how to adjust sensitivity. You will need to remove the cover however.I hope I have helped in some way. |
Question: | How much current it takes to operate this sensor? The idle power consumption when not operating the load. And, does it use more than the load when on |
Answer: | Roy Man, I do not have the specifics, but I would figure the idle current to be in the micro amps and when on, it is still in the micro amp range.Having said that, I have been very disappointed in the operation of my switches. Outdoors, the range is only a few feet. Indoors, I have to actually touch it and hold it to turn the circuit on.I hope this helps. |
Question: | will this detect vibration? or can do you guys produce one that works off vibration/moment |
Answer: | Dear Diane, Thank you for your questions. this switch can detect human(or heat resource) movement, but this switch can't detect the slight vibration of the object, this is an infrared motion sensor switch, that is to say, this switch is only work when it detected the movement of heat resource or the human body. So if this is an object which without any heat, it will not active this switch even if there is a vibration. However, we have a microwave motion sensor switch, which can detect the vibration or movement of the object. Here is the link for your reference: http://www.amazon.com/Sensky-Microwave-sensitivity-distance-detector/dp/B00MHLK2YY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1452745765&sr=8-1&keywords=BS029AIf you need any further help, please feel free to contact me anytime.
