12 best motion light switchs

Motion light switches, also known as motion-activated switches or motion sensor switches, are electrical devices used to control lighting or other electrical loads in a space based on motion detection. These switches are commonly used for energy efficiency, security, and convenience in homes and commercial settings. Here are some key points about motion light switches:

  1. Motion Sensing Technology: Motion light switches are equipped with motion sensors that detect movement within their detection range. The most common type of sensor used is passive infrared (PIR), which detects changes in heat patterns caused by moving objects.

  2. Automatic Activation: When someone enters the area monitored by the motion sensor, the switch will automatically turn on the connected lights or electrical devices. This eliminates the need for manual operation, which can be convenient in areas with frequent traffic.

  3. Adjustable Settings: Many motion light switches allow users to adjust settings such as the sensitivity of the motion sensor, the duration the lights stay on after motion is detected (known as the "timeout" or "delay" setting), and the ambient light threshold at which the sensor should activate the lights (to prevent unnecessary activation during daylight).

  4. Energy Efficiency: Motion-activated switches can contribute to energy savings by ensuring that lights are only on when needed. This is particularly useful in areas like hallways, closets, bathrooms, and outdoor lighting.

  5. Security Benefits: Motion sensors can enhance security by automatically turning on lights when motion is detected, deterring potential intruders or providing better visibility around your property.

  6. Types of Switches: Motion light switches come in various forms, including wall switches, ceiling-mounted sensors, and integrated fixtures with built-in sensors. Wall switches are the most common and can replace traditional light switches.

  7. Wiring: Installation of motion light switches typically requires some electrical knowledge. It's important to follow the manufacturer's installation instructions and, if necessary, consult a qualified electrician.

  8. Compatibility: Ensure that the motion light switch you choose is compatible with the type of lighting and load you intend to control, whether it's incandescent, LED, CFL, or other types of bulbs.

  9. Applications: Motion light switches are commonly used in residential spaces, commercial buildings, warehouses, and outdoor security lighting.

  10. Maintenance: Periodic cleaning of the motion sensor's lens is recommended to ensure proper functionality. Dust and dirt buildup can affect the sensor's sensitivity.

In summary, motion light switches are a convenient and energy-efficient way to automate lighting and other electrical loads based on motion detection. They are used in a variety of settings to improve convenience, security, and energy savings.

User questions & answers

Question: How do I know if I need this 250W or the similar 600W switch? Are they interchangeable
Answer: Depends on use. Lights and Ceiling fans, 250w is fine. If you have a Electric ceiling heater That requires more watts, then the 600w I would use. Hope this helps.
Question: Will the motion sensor be set off by a small (toy size - 10 lbs) dog
Answer: I have mine installed in a small walk-in (6 ft x 5 ft) closet and my 10 lb cat triggers it all the time, kind of annoying when it happens at 1 am. I just close the door to preven this from happening.
Question: Will this work as... Enter room and I manually turn on the light and then the unit automatically turns off the light after a set time of inactivity? I only want it to turn off the light
Answer: Follow up question on the previous answer....So if the unit turns off the light, is the actual switch toggled back to the "off" position? So that the next time someone walks in the door, they have to again toggle the switch back to the "on" position?
Question: I don't get the,"No neutral required." A neutral is always required. What am I missing here
Answer: I was an electrical engineer for Lutron back in the 1980's. Many dimmers and electronic switches like this one do not require a neutral wire to work. This is not a mechanical switch but an electronic one. It uses a silicon switching device called a triac which turns the light on and off 120 times per second, just like every dimmer ever made. During the brief period 120 times/second when the triac is off, the device draws a small amount of power through the light bulbs it controls, and uses this small amount of power to charge a capacitor, which you can think of as a rechargeable battery. Thus there are many wallbox products, such as most dimmers, that do not require a neutral wire to operate. Nor does it put any power intentionally to ground, which would be against the electrical code and thus could not be sold. The reason other companies require a neutral wire is because they were not designed by companies that also make dimmers as their engineers probably do not realize the device can be designed to draw sufficient power using a triac instead they use a relay, which would produce an audible click when switched on, where as a triac device would make no sounds when turning on and off. Hope this helps.
Question: Does this come as pictured with the mounting stub or is it just the sensor? Thanks
Answer: It comes with the mounting stub as pictured. The mounting stub is the standard size for attaching to an electrical box (there are any number of options as to what size and style). I purchased this unit about a year ago and it has functioned flawlessly.
Question: Can I use two of these in paralled to work one light? I want to mount them on the corners of a garage and turn on one central light
Answer: My guess is you will burn them out. i tried this once with a water circulation pump (no light in the circuit) connected to a relay. A friend of mine had 3 of these in 3 different bathrooms in his house. the thought was as soon as someone walked into a bathroom, this device would activate a pump which would circulate hot water from the water tank to the fixtures (and hence the cold water in the line back to the tank for heating). We took precautions. first we made sure the power going to the 'hot' and neutral side of the sensors were from the same breaker (otherwise you could accidentally send 240 volts to the load if the sensors were on different sides of the line coming into your breaker panel). Second, we used a relay (mentioned earlier) as 'the load' because the draw (in amps) of the circulation pump was more than the sensor would allow as a pass though (you have to pay attention to the current these things will allow... watts, amps, miliamps - all need to know stuff! - we could have hooked it up directly, but it would have burned them out in short order, not to mention create a fire hazard). Finally, we ran all three of the load wires back to one junction box, tied them together with a wire nut (to complete the parallel connection you are talking about), and connected the load to the trigger side of the relay. we walked in each room and sure enough, the motion sensor engaged the relay, and the motor kicked on and the water circulated as designed. we thought we were home free. after about 2 months, we noticed one of the sensors was no longer activating the relay (and the pump did not run). we could eliminate the motor as it was completely separated from the electrical path. we discovered one of the motion sensors had burned out. replaced it, and all was well, and then a month later, a motion sensor from ANOTHER bathroom burned out. the relay hardly drew any power, so it couldn't be that. then we separated all of them and had three separate relays to engage the pump - never had another issue with burn-out. so what happened? we think if a person 'tripped' the motion sensor, it sent 110 volts to the load side of the other sensors (which were not activated by motion), and that 'back flow' of power messed up the electronics inside the sensors not in use. only explanation that made sense. so long story short, you could connect them in parallel, but i think they would burn out because of a 'back flow' between the devices. when we separated them with individual relays - no problems. e-circulation pump would have drawn more amps than the sensor allows to pass through we ranf the 'load' side of
Question: Can you disable the dusk to dawn setting
Answer: yes
Question: does it come on during the day when detecting motion or just after dark
Answer: If your application requires it to work during the day just put electrical tape over the photo sensor and it works 24/7. I used sensor to activate a fountain pump 24/7

User questions & answers

Question: Currently i have single pole manual switch which says 15amp on it. can i replace with this motion sensor switch
Answer: In AC circuits (house wiring), white is neutral, black or red is hot, green or bare copper is ground. In many wall switches there is only a black wire on both sides of the switch. This sensor will not work with those, you will need a sensor that doesn't require a neutral (white) wire. In DC circuits, black is usually (not always) ground. There is no neutral in DC circuits. Cars and trucks have DC circuits.
Question: Can I use in parallel of two of such switches? So if either of them turns on, the light will be on? when off/no motion, load is neutral or floating
Answer: Yes, it will fit in a two gang wall plate.
Question: what is a neutral wire
Answer: Yes. You can share your device to your family member. The package includes user manual which will explain the steps.
Question: Does it fit a standard 2-gang wallplate
Answer: Yes it is a simple toggle manual switch

User questions & answers

Question: Does it come with accompanying wall plate
Answer: I don't recall whether or not they do. However deco wall plates are low priced and available at all hardware stores. I am an electrician so I carry a few boxes of ten plates in my truck at all times. So if they didn't I grabbed a few to put on with the switches.
Question: Can it be onstallwd with a 2nd swirch for a vent in a varhroom
Answer: You could install one on the vent fan switch in the bathroom and have a separate one in a dual wall plate connected the the lights.. or wire both to the single switch.
Question: Could this switch be activated by a cat if mounted at standard switch height
Answer: Yes. It can be activated by a giant cat.
Question: My box has two sets of hot, neutral, and ground wires. will this switch work? if yes, what is the setup
Answer: Yes. If you test those two sets of wires with your multimeter, you'll likely see that one of the black wires is actually being turned on and off by the current light switch. If so, connect that black wire to this switch's red wire. Connect your always-hot black wire to this switch's black wire. Connect all three white wires together. Connect all three ground wires together.

Product description

TOPGREENER TDOS5 Motion Sensor Switch automatically turns lights and motors on and off according to the motion (occupancy/vacancy) detected in the room. There are two modes: Occupancy (OCC) and Vacancy (VAC) modes. In occupancy mode lights are automatically turned on when you enter a room and automatically turned off after the room is vacant. This is especially convenient when entering a room with your hands full, such as an entryway, laundry room, garage, etc. Avoid fumbling in the dark for the light switch or tripping when entering a dark room. Having the lights automatically turn on will deter thieves and allow a surveillance camera to capture clear footage. Use OCC mode for the kitchen, laundry room, garage, restroom, office, closet, etc. Vacancy mode is another option to choose from, which requires manually turning the light on and automatically turns the light off when the room is vacant. VAC mode is used in rooms that do not need the lights to automatically turn on, such as bedrooms and media rooms. This ensures the most energy savings because the user decides when to turn the lights on. The TDOS5 sensor switch provides reliable performance. When no motion is detected within the set time delay the load will turn off automatically. The PIR sensor switch's visually aesthetic design and broad compatibility make it a good choice for you to upgrade your home. Variable time delay from 15 seconds to 30 minutes allows users to choose their preferred option. This occupancy sensor switch is only for single pole use. A neutral wire is required for installation.

Question: does it work with two-way switch
Answer: I don't know. We have it on a single switch and it works great
Question: My wire includes a black, a white and a copper. How do I connect them to the switch which has 4 wires
Answer: It seems that your neutral wire is missing. Please check the back of your box to see if there is a bundle of wires, which should be your neutral. Otherwise, you will need the TDOS5-J model, which does not require neutral but requires a ground: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01IO1M5WW?ref=myi_title_dp
Question: What is the "Light" adjustment dial for? Is this a dimmer adjustment for the connected fixture
Answer: The light setting can be used to keep the switch from turning on if the ambient light is above the set level. For example if you use this switch on a patio or lanai and only want the motion to turn on a light if it's dark outside; you would turn this dial all the way and then slowly back it down until the light comes on at the ambient light level you desire.

User questions & answers

Question: Can anyone suggest a wall mount single pole p.i.r. switch with no manual "off" override? I have seen these in hospital restrooms with no visibl brand
Answer: LEVITON MAKES 1
Question: Anyone else finding the light ON without any motion? I open the garage door and see the light on at random times day/night. Garage is empty
Answer: Mine also comes on when the HVAC starts or stops. I've also noticed that it comes on at night when I open my bedroom door. The door is completely out of sight from the switch. I can only imagine that the switch has an extremely sensitive pressure sensor in it also. I think I'll be replacing it since I think it comes on / off several times a day when we're not at home and the whole point was to try to save energy!
Question: Will this completely turn off LED lights or is the light still slightly on even if the switch it off
Answer: You must have ground connected or the LED light will stay slightly on. If you don't have a ground, it won't work correctly with LED bulb.
Question: I don't want anyone to be able to turn off the light manually, is that possible
Answer: It is not designed to do that but you can easily work around it. Remove the front face and on the bottom of the removed face are 4 black protrusions. Three are necessary clips but in the middle is a shorter rounded protrusion that does the pushing of the switch. With a nail cutter, or small wire cutter, flush cutter or the side of a small file hack off about 1 millimeter of that nub. Make sure the light in on (push the round black pad in the switch) on put this modified switch conve back on and test it to see if you removed enouch of the "pusher" that it will not activate when you push the button.

User questions & answers

Question: Connected all four. Works manually, but it does not detect motion. Is it possible the wiring is screwed up or must it be defective switch
Answer: Please make sure that the white wire on the switch is only connected to the neutral in your junction box. The neutral is usually a bundle of white wires in the box and is required for the sensor to work properly. Next, please make sure that the hot and load aren't reversely connected. If reversely connected, the sensor component won't work.
Question: Will this work with led bulbs (10w or less) and fluorescent tubes (without humming
Answer: It works with LED. Under 10W? Can't think of why not. Mine runs 90W with no flicker or hum. LED hum is usually caused by a lower quality dimmer set to dim. This is just a toggle switch. No dimmer. Most likely no hum.
Question: Is the off and on work like normal switch. if you turn it to on, it won't auto turn off after you leave, correct
Answer: That is correct. The "Off" and "On" settings are AWAYS off or ALWAYS on.
Question: Does it draw any power when it is in manual off mode
Answer: The switch draws no power in manual OFF and manual ON. In AUTO it always uses 0.02 Amps x 0.15 power factor x 120V = 0.36 watts, which is also about $0.36 in electricity per year if always at AUTO. These numbers are from my Kill A Watt http://www.amazon.com/P3-P4400-Electricity-Usage-Monitor/dp/B00009MDBU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1453330013&sr=8-1&keywords=kill-a-watt

User questions & answers

Question: I have tried similar ones. I have a basement install at top stairs but when I come back up later the beam is flat and does not pick me up will this
Answer: No. I have two of these, one at the top and one at the bottom of the stairs to compensate. They make an audible clicking sound and I can tell that the one at the top of the stairs does not turn on until my head comes close to horizontal with the switch.
Question: In a 3-way application, what happens when you turn on the regular switch? Does it stay on or go off after a time
Answer: Depends on how you have the Lutron programmed. You can set it to turn off with ambient light along with timed turn off with out movement or just plain turn on with movement. Have 2 but probably will move the one in my office. Have it timed 3 minute with ambient light & when setting at desk reading light will turn off. Not a big deal just wave my hand in the air & it comes right back on
Question: How do you activate the manual on option (where the light only comes on manually, but goes off automatically
Answer: From the instruction manual:1. Press and hold the Auxiliary button.2. Release the button after the lens flashes for the second time. This places the switch in Manual On - Auto Off mode.http://www.lutron.com/TechnicalDocumentLibrary/048461.pdf
Question: A light in hallway controlled by 2 switches. Do i need to install both light switches? or in a situation like this, how do i install it
Answer: They have products for 2 light switches (3-way) and 3 light switches (4-way.) For these, you buy the appropriate one, then either one or two companion switches if you'd like more than one sensor. Their website will give you the model numbers and wiring instructions you need.
