12 best motion actuated switches
Motion-activated switches, also known as motion sensors or motion detectors, are devices designed to automatically turn on or off lights or other electrical devices in response to the detection of motion within a specific range. These switches are commonly used for energy efficiency, convenience, and security purposes in both residential and commercial settings.
Here are some key points about motion-activated switches:
Functionality:
- Motion-activated switches use various technologies to detect motion, including infrared (IR), ultrasonic, and microwave sensors. Infrared sensors are the most common and work by detecting changes in heat patterns caused by movement.
Applications:
- These switches are commonly used in areas where hands-free operation is desirable, such as hallways, staircases, bathrooms, and outdoor spaces. They are also employed in security lighting systems to illuminate an area when motion is detected.
Types:
- There are different types of motion-activated switches, including wall-mounted switches, ceiling-mounted sensors, and integrated sensors within light fixtures. Wall switches are often used to replace traditional light switches and can be installed in existing electrical boxes.
Adjustable Settings:
- Many motion-activated switches allow users to adjust settings such as sensitivity, timeout duration (how long the lights stay on after motion is detected), and ambient light sensitivity (to prevent activation during daylight).
Energy Efficiency:
- Motion-activated switches contribute to energy savings by ensuring that lights are only on when needed. This is particularly beneficial in areas where people might forget to turn off lights, such as utility rooms or closets.
Installation:
- Installing a motion-activated switch is typically similar to installing a regular switch. However, it may require a neutral wire for power. It's important to follow the manufacturer's installation instructions and, if necessary, consult an electrician.
Compatibility:
- Before purchasing a motion-activated switch, it's crucial to ensure compatibility with the type of lighting or load it will control. Some switches are designed for specific types of bulbs or loads, and exceeding the specified wattage can cause issues.
Security Lighting:
- Motion-activated switches are often integrated into security lighting systems, providing an extra layer of safety by automatically illuminating areas when motion is detected, potentially deterring intruders.
Cost:
- The cost of motion-activated switches can vary depending on features, brand, and functionality. It's essential to balance the desired features with the budget for the project.
When choosing a motion-activated switch, consider the specific needs of the space, the desired features, and the type of motion detection technology that best suits the application.

User questions & answers
Question: | Why does my smart home plug work on some outlets and not on others? It works fine with my Echo when plugged into one outlet, but not a different one |
Answer: | All of the answers that suggest being on "A and B 120 volt sections" are wrong. This device works over WiFi. That old "A and B" advice is for obsolete powerline systems like X-10. Any problems are due to WiFi signal quality. The Smart Plug and Echo do NOT need to be on the same "120 volt section." |
Question: | Do I need an Alexa device in the home to control the outlet while we're away |
Answer: | As long as you have the app and the outlet is paired with your Alexa app, you can control it through the app (no echo device needed). |
Question: | Does it work with a 5g wi-fi or is like the other one you sell that only work with a 2g wi-fi |
Answer: | You probably don't want this device to use 5 ghz wi-fi, which has a limited amount of signal channels. 2 ghz wi-fi has fewer channels, running at lower speeds, and is generally conjested with traffic from your neighbor's wifi. You won't, however, notice a difference in lag for a smart plug due it is only using about 1 kilobit per second over a connectionless protocol to activate or deactivate the plug. This plug, running on the 2 ghz wi-fi, means that there is one more channel available on the 5 ghz wi-fi for a device that really needs it, like a TV or a gaming console, which tend to transmit at around 25,000 kilobits per second each. |
Question: | My Keurig has a toggle switch. Will this plug work, or does the appliance have to be turned on when it is plugged into the smart plug |
Answer: | I haven't even installed my smart plug yet and I can already answer this. The plug will turn it on but how would it press the button to brew? Again, I can already say it won't do that. Another answer mentioned using a switch bot. Okay. So smart plug $10-$15 plus switch bot $20 ... Dude, just go buy a coffeemaker with a clock/timer. They've been around FOREVER and will both turn themselves on and brew your coffee for you and you don't even have to make a whole pot. You can get an entire coffee maker for like $25 then use your smart plugs for something else/something that doesn't already have the ability to turn itself on/ect. :) |

User questions & answers
Question: | How do I know if I need this 250W or the similar 600W switch? Are they interchangeable |
Answer: | Depends on use. Lights and Ceiling fans, 250w is fine. If you have a Electric ceiling heater That requires more watts, then the 600w I would use. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Will the motion sensor be set off by a small (toy size - 10 lbs) dog |
Answer: | I have mine installed in a small walk-in (6 ft x 5 ft) closet and my 10 lb cat triggers it all the time, kind of annoying when it happens at 1 am. I just close the door to preven this from happening. |
Question: | Will this work as... Enter room and I manually turn on the light and then the unit automatically turns off the light after a set time of inactivity? I only want it to turn off the light |
Answer: | Follow up question on the previous answer....So if the unit turns off the light, is the actual switch toggled back to the "off" position? So that the next time someone walks in the door, they have to again toggle the switch back to the "on" position? |
Question: | I don't get the,"No neutral required." A neutral is always required. What am I missing here |
Answer: | I was an electrical engineer for Lutron back in the 1980's. Many dimmers and electronic switches like this one do not require a neutral wire to work. This is not a mechanical switch but an electronic one. It uses a silicon switching device called a triac which turns the light on and off 120 times per second, just like every dimmer ever made. During the brief period 120 times/second when the triac is off, the device draws a small amount of power through the light bulbs it controls, and uses this small amount of power to charge a capacitor, which you can think of as a rechargeable battery. Thus there are many wallbox products, such as most dimmers, that do not require a neutral wire to operate. Nor does it put any power intentionally to ground, which would be against the electrical code and thus could not be sold. The reason other companies require a neutral wire is because they were not designed by companies that also make dimmers as their engineers probably do not realize the device can be designed to draw sufficient power using a triac instead they use a relay, which would produce an audible click when switched on, where as a triac device would make no sounds when turning on and off. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Does this come as pictured with the mounting stub or is it just the sensor? Thanks |
Answer: | It comes with the mounting stub as pictured. The mounting stub is the standard size for attaching to an electrical box (there are any number of options as to what size and style). I purchased this unit about a year ago and it has functioned flawlessly. |
Question: | Can I use two of these in paralled to work one light? I want to mount them on the corners of a garage and turn on one central light |
Answer: | My guess is you will burn them out. i tried this once with a water circulation pump (no light in the circuit) connected to a relay. A friend of mine had 3 of these in 3 different bathrooms in his house. the thought was as soon as someone walked into a bathroom, this device would activate a pump which would circulate hot water from the water tank to the fixtures (and hence the cold water in the line back to the tank for heating). We took precautions. first we made sure the power going to the 'hot' and neutral side of the sensors were from the same breaker (otherwise you could accidentally send 240 volts to the load if the sensors were on different sides of the line coming into your breaker panel). Second, we used a relay (mentioned earlier) as 'the load' because the draw (in amps) of the circulation pump was more than the sensor would allow as a pass though (you have to pay attention to the current these things will allow... watts, amps, miliamps - all need to know stuff! - we could have hooked it up directly, but it would have burned them out in short order, not to mention create a fire hazard). Finally, we ran all three of the load wires back to one junction box, tied them together with a wire nut (to complete the parallel connection you are talking about), and connected the load to the trigger side of the relay. we walked in each room and sure enough, the motion sensor engaged the relay, and the motor kicked on and the water circulated as designed. we thought we were home free. after about 2 months, we noticed one of the sensors was no longer activating the relay (and the pump did not run). we could eliminate the motor as it was completely separated from the electrical path. we discovered one of the motion sensors had burned out. replaced it, and all was well, and then a month later, a motion sensor from ANOTHER bathroom burned out. the relay hardly drew any power, so it couldn't be that. then we separated all of them and had three separate relays to engage the pump - never had another issue with burn-out. so what happened? we think if a person 'tripped' the motion sensor, it sent 110 volts to the load side of the other sensors (which were not activated by motion), and that 'back flow' of power messed up the electronics inside the sensors not in use. only explanation that made sense. so long story short, you could connect them in parallel, but i think they would burn out because of a 'back flow' between the devices. when we separated them with individual relays - no problems. e-circulation pump would have drawn more amps than the sensor allows to pass through we ranf the 'load' side of |
Question: | Can you disable the dusk to dawn setting |
Answer: | yes |
Question: | does it come on during the day when detecting motion or just after dark |
Answer: | If your application requires it to work during the day just put electrical tape over the photo sensor and it works 24/7. I used sensor to activate a fountain pump 24/7 |

User questions & answers
Question: | I live in an old house, My switches only have 1wire, the hot. No ground and no neutral in my wall switch boxes. Will this work for me |
Answer: | You could use this in conjunction with the Insteon 2475F FanLinc Insteon Dual-Band Ceiling Fan and Light Controller, to controll the light functions. Use your remote to control the fan functions. The switch is of course unnecessary however. |
Question: | Can you program 2 remotes to work with one switch? I want one wall mounted and one hand held |
Answer: | This item needs to work with an Insteon hub, there is a hub that works with HomeKit. But this is a combination I have not tried. |
Question: | Does anyone know if this dimmer works on a three way switch |
Answer: | The Smarthome page for the 2466DW says nothing about dual-band. Neither the quickstart guide nor the owners manual say anything about dual-band. The owners manual states, in more than one place, that you need to "make sure you have installed at least two Access Points (#2443) or other dual-band INSTEON products". I think it's pretty certain that this product is NOT dual-band. |
Question: | I purchased the Lutron P-PKG1W-WH and my new LED bulbs are flickering when being dimmed. They are dimmable bulbs and I have tried 2 different brands |
Answer: | Yes. I have the 2466DW installed in my kitchen in a 3-gang switch box in the center between two other standard Lutron toggle switches. I needed the Insteon as it was the only toggle style dimmer switch compatible with controlling the low-voltage(twicebright CL1220TL) mini-recessed lights that use dimmable LED bulbs above my sink. The switch is high quality and easy to program for the desired on level. |

Question: | Can I use dewalt brand nails and .22 loads |
Answer: | You don't specify the size of the nail that you plan to use. But I wouldn't recommend it for cinder block. On cement block, it will work if you are able to avoid the hollow portion of the block. Otherwise, it could blow out the back portion of the block. Remember to follow the ratings on the charge. |
Question: | Whats the weight capacity for hanging something |
Answer: | Hello, the pistol only uses one shot at a time, you need to recharge every time you shoot (nail) |
Question: | Will this tool work with concrete/cinder block? Some say no. If not, what alternative works with similar ease/mechanism of use |
Answer: | Probably not a good idea. I know ammo is very hard to get but these are not the answer. |

TOPGREENER TDOS5 Motion Sensor Switch automatically turns lights and motors on and off according to the motion (occupancy/vacancy) detected in the room. There are two modes: Occupancy (OCC) and Vacancy (VAC) modes. In occupancy mode lights are automatically turned on when you enter a room and automatically turned off after the room is vacant. This is especially convenient when entering a room with your hands full, such as an entryway, laundry room, garage, etc. Avoid fumbling in the dark for the light switch or tripping when entering a dark room. Having the lights automatically turn on will deter thieves and allow a surveillance camera to capture clear footage. Use OCC mode for the kitchen, laundry room, garage, restroom, office, closet, etc. Vacancy mode is another option to choose from, which requires manually turning the light on and automatically turns the light off when the room is vacant. VAC mode is used in rooms that do not need the lights to automatically turn on, such as bedrooms and media rooms. This ensures the most energy savings because the user decides when to turn the lights on. The TDOS5 sensor switch provides reliable performance. Question: | Are they only available in white |
Answer: | I have only seen them in white so far. |
Question: | does it work with two-way switch |
Answer: | I don't know. We have it on a single switch and it works great |
Question: | My wire includes a black, a white and a copper. How do I connect them to the switch which has 4 wires |
Answer: | It seems that your neutral wire is missing. Please check the back of your box to see if there is a bundle of wires, which should be your neutral. Otherwise, you will need the TDOS5-J model, which does not require neutral but requires a ground: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01IO1M5WW?ref=myi_title_dp |
Question: | What is the "Light" adjustment dial for? Is this a dimmer adjustment for the connected fixture |
Answer: | The light setting can be used to keep the switch from turning on if the ambient light is above the set level. For example if you use this switch on a patio or lanai and only want the motion to turn on a light if it's dark outside; you would turn this dial all the way and then slowly back it down until the light comes on at the ambient light level you desire. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Hello, does this work with LED lights |
Answer: | It comes with the mounting stub as pictured. The mounting stub is the standard size for attaching to an electrical box (there are any number of options as to what size and style). I purchased this unit about a year ago and it has functioned flawlessly. |
Question: | Will this work with fluorescent light fixtures |
Finally, we ran all three of the load wires back to one junction box, tied them together with a wire nut (to complete the parallel connection you are talking about), and connected the load to the trigger side of the relay. we walked in each room and sure enough, the motion sensor engaged the relay, and the motor kicked on and the water circulated as designed. we thought we were home free. after about 2 months, we noticed one of the sensors was no longer activating the relay (and the pump did not run). we could eliminate the motor as it was completely separated from the electrical path. we discovered one of the motion sensors had burned out. replaced it, and all was well, and then a month later, a motion sensor from ANOTHER bathroom burned out. the relay hardly drew any power, so it couldn't be that. then we separated all of them and had three separate relays to engage the pump - never had another issue with burn-out. so what happened? we think if a person 'tripped' the motion sensor, it sent 110 volts to the load side of the other sensors (which were not activated by motion), and that 'back flow' of power messed up the electronics inside the sensors not in use. only explanation that made sense. so long story short, you could connect them in parallel, but i think they would burn out because of a 'back flow' between the devices. when we separated them with individual relays - no problems. e-circulation pump would have drawn more amps than the sensor allows to pass through we ranf the 'load' side of |
Question: | anyone know how many amps this can handle |
Answer: | yes |
Question: | I want to install this in my foyer. Will this sense movement from second floor when coming the downstairs |
Answer: | If your application requires it to work during the day just put electrical tape over the photo sensor and it works 24/7. I used sensor to activate a fountain pump 24/7 |
