User questions & answers
Question: | How do I know if I need this 250W or the similar 600W switch? Are they interchangeable |
Answer: | Depends on use. Lights and Ceiling fans, 250w is fine. If you have a Electric ceiling heater That requires more watts, then the 600w I would use. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Will the motion sensor be set off by a small (toy size - 10 lbs) dog |
Answer: | I have mine installed in a small walk-in (6 ft x 5 ft) closet and my 10 lb cat triggers it all the time, kind of annoying when it happens at 1 am. I just close the door to preven this from happening. |
Question: | Will this work as... Enter room and I manually turn on the light and then the unit automatically turns off the light after a set time of inactivity? I only want it to turn off the light |
Answer: | Follow up question on the previous answer....So if the unit turns off the light, is the actual switch toggled back to the "off" position? So that the next time someone walks in the door, they have to again toggle the switch back to the "on" position? |
Question: | I don't get the,"No neutral required." A neutral is always required. What am I missing here |
Answer: | I was an electrical engineer for Lutron back in the 1980's. Many dimmers and electronic switches like this one do not require a neutral wire to work. This is not a mechanical switch but an electronic one. It uses a silicon switching device called a triac which turns the light on and off 120 times per second, just like every dimmer ever made. During the brief period 120 times/second when the triac is off, the device draws a small amount of power through the light bulbs it controls, and uses this small amount of power to charge a capacitor, which you can think of as a rechargeable battery. Thus there are many wallbox products, such as most dimmers, that do not require a neutral wire to operate. Nor does it put any power intentionally to ground, which would be against the electrical code and thus could not be sold. The reason other companies require a neutral wire is because they were not designed by companies that also make dimmers as their engineers probably do not realize the device can be designed to draw sufficient power using a triac instead they use a relay, which would produce an audible click when switched on, where as a triac device would make no sounds when turning on and off. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Does this come as pictured with the mounting stub or is it just the sensor? Thanks |
Answer: | It comes with the mounting stub as pictured. The mounting stub is the standard size for attaching to an electrical box (there are any number of options as to what size and style). I purchased this unit about a year ago and it has functioned flawlessly. |
Question: | Can I use two of these in paralled to work one light? I want to mount them on the corners of a garage and turn on one central light |
Answer: | My guess is you will burn them out. i tried this once with a water circulation pump (no light in the circuit) connected to a relay. A friend of mine had 3 of these in 3 different bathrooms in his house. the thought was as soon as someone walked into a bathroom, this device would activate a pump which would circulate hot water from the water tank to the fixtures (and hence the cold water in the line back to the tank for heating). We took precautions. first we made sure the power going to the 'hot' and neutral side of the sensors were from the same breaker (otherwise you could accidentally send 240 volts to the load if the sensors were on different sides of the line coming into your breaker panel). Second, we used a relay (mentioned earlier) as 'the load' because the draw (in amps) of the circulation pump was more than the sensor would allow as a pass though (you have to pay attention to the current these things will allow... watts, amps, miliamps - all need to know stuff! - we could have hooked it up directly, but it would have burned them out in short order, not to mention create a fire hazard). Finally, we ran all three of the load wires back to one junction box, tied them together with a wire nut (to complete the parallel connection you are talking about), and connected the load to the trigger side of the relay. we walked in each room and sure enough, the motion sensor engaged the relay, and the motor kicked on and the water circulated as designed. we thought we were home free. after about 2 months, we noticed one of the sensors was no longer activating the relay (and the pump did not run). we could eliminate the motor as it was completely separated from the electrical path. we discovered one of the motion sensors had burned out. replaced it, and all was well, and then a month later, a motion sensor from ANOTHER bathroom burned out. the relay hardly drew any power, so it couldn't be that. then we separated all of them and had three separate relays to engage the pump - never had another issue with burn-out. so what happened? we think if a person 'tripped' the motion sensor, it sent 110 volts to the load side of the other sensors (which were not activated by motion), and that 'back flow' of power messed up the electronics inside the sensors not in use. only explanation that made sense. so long story short, you could connect them in parallel, but i think they would burn out because of a 'back flow' between the devices. when we separated them with individual relays - no problems. e-circulation pump would have drawn more amps than the sensor allows to pass through we ranf the 'load' side of |
Question: | Can you disable the dusk to dawn setting |
Answer: | yes |
Question: | does it come on during the day when detecting motion or just after dark |
Answer: | If your application requires it to work during the day just put electrical tape over the photo sensor and it works 24/7. I used sensor to activate a fountain pump 24/7 |

User questions & answers
Question: | I have tried similar ones. I have a basement install at top stairs but when I come back up later the beam is flat and does not pick me up will this |
Answer: | No. I have two of these, one at the top and one at the bottom of the stairs to compensate. They make an audible clicking sound and I can tell that the one at the top of the stairs does not turn on until my head comes close to horizontal with the switch. |
Question: | In a 3-way application, what happens when you turn on the regular switch? Does it stay on or go off after a time |
Answer: | Depends on how you have the Lutron programmed. You can set it to turn off with ambient light along with timed turn off with out movement or just plain turn on with movement. Have 2 but probably will move the one in my office. Have it timed 3 minute with ambient light & when setting at desk reading light will turn off. Not a big deal just wave my hand in the air & it comes right back on |
Question: | How do you activate the manual on option (where the light only comes on manually, but goes off automatically |
Answer: | From the instruction manual:1. Press and hold the Auxiliary button.2. Release the button after the lens flashes for the second time. This places the switch in Manual On - Auto Off mode.http://www.lutron.com/TechnicalDocumentLibrary/048461.pdf |
Question: | A light in hallway controlled by 2 switches. Do i need to install both light switches? or in a situation like this, how do i install it |
Answer: | They have products for 2 light switches (3-way) and 3 light switches (4-way.) For these, you buy the appropriate one, then either one or two companion switches if you'd like more than one sensor. Their website will give you the model numbers and wiring instructions you need. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this actually fade in the lights as you enter a room, or does it simply switch them |
Answer: | Quick fade in then slow fade to off. Keeps last setting of light intensity. It is programmable in length for example how long you want it to wait to turn off the lights after no movement. |
Question: | Does the dimmer setting stay where you last set it to, or does it reset to full brightness when you come back in the room |
Answer: | As long as power to the dimmer itself is not lost for a prolonged period of time, it stays where you set it and does not return to full brightness upon coming back into the room. There is also a "hard" on/off switch at the very bottom of the switch which can be pulled out so you can shut the light off and prevent it from coming on if you are changing a bulb or want it completely off for some reason. |
Question: | i dont know how to adjust the timeout option i want my lights to stay on only for 1 minute as opposed to 5 minutes i dont have the instructions does |
Answer: | If this URL doesn't provide the correct info, then do another search on the model number - the instructions are available on line. Fine print, not the easiest to read or figure out, but the info is there. I changed the timeout a long time ago and when I realized the instructions were on line I sent the printed instructions to the recycle bin... User questions & answers
Question: | Can this switch be used to replace a single switch controlling both a bathroom ceiling light and a fan |
Answer: | Yes. If you have a fan of less than 3 amps, you can also switch a light. Typical bathroom fans draw about 1 amp and many are fan/light combos. You could use this switch to operate both. |
Question: | does this switch include a wall plate |
Answer: | We can include a wall plate at no charge |
Question: | Can I use this in conjuntion with one of my existing 3-way "manual" switches |
Answer: | NO ~ REQUIRES Lutron Auxiliary Switch MA-AS as the companion switch. Will NOT function properly if you do not use the companion as the secondary switch. This quality dimmer is a 'master' that requires companion slave switch to operate in a 2-way/3-way capacity. |
Question: | Can this switch be used on dual-pole switches |
Answer: | David, This is a single pole switch. I think you could power one of the poles from either side using 2 switches since this will be an automatic operating switch, but I am not an electrician. Good luck, -Brad |
Question: | Can this be used on led lights |
Answer: | Yes. They want. Be used for LED lights. |
Question: | Does it come with wall plate |
Answer: | No. It's like any other switch you purchase. You need to by the face plates. |
Question: | is a hub required |
Answer: | No...every dimmer is independent. When using a 3 way the other switch is wired funny so it just sends a signal to the dimmer to do its thing, but the main switch never loses power. |
Question: | Is this a smart switch? In either case, is the dimming level able to be set when triggered by motion sensor |
Answer: | It can remember the last level, go to half brightness, or go to full brightness when it detects motion. You can also change a few other parameters, such as how long the lights stay on, how sensitive, and I forget the 4th |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this dimmer switch buzz when dimmed |
Answer: | No, they are silent. I had similar concerns with the lights buzzing (I have LED lights) using older model incandescent dimmers. So I bought 2 of these and have been happy with them. |
Question: | This looks like it can replace a switch with no re-wiring. Is that true |
Answer: | Yes, the DVCL-153P can be used to replace a single pole or 3-way switch for dimmable lighting loads. This dimmer will use standard household wiring and should not require any additional wiring. Please see the following specification sheet for more information: http://www.lutron.com/TechnicalDocumentLibrary/369682.pdf |
Question: | Will this work with Phillips bulbs |
Answer: | I'm sure I'm too late for you but just in case...I just purchased the Lutron Diva C.L. and 8 Phillips Clear G25 LED bulbs for our master bath vanity, installed yesterday and they work great together. So good that I'm going to purchase the same for the other bathroom. |
Question: | What is the difference between dvcl-153p and dvwcl-153p |
Answer: | If this is indeed the same switch as the DVCL, then my Cree LED bulbs (SA19-08127MDFD...) shouldn't buzz (according to Cree). But they do. Ug. What a pain all this compatibility stuff is. The industry needs to figure out a standard. |

User questions & answers
Question: | will this work with led lights |
Answer: | Works well with the LED can lights installed in my house about a year and a half ago. Neither I or my wife hear the buzzing mentioned by others. |
Question: | Can It be switch off while in the room |
Answer: | There are a few different types of these vacancy switches. Ones that only turn on when you touch the button and those that automatically turn on when you enter. You can set the time that it automatically turns off. Can also get motion sensor with dimmer function or not. Don't want dimmer function for fluorescent lights. You can turn it off any of these switches by tapping the button, but approximately 10 seconds later if it sees motion, it will turn on again if you have the automatic "on" version. If you want "no" motion to turn on lights, only timed off, only acquire this switch: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ECUH40I/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 You can also control other standard Lutron IR switches using this device for hallways, entries, garage or wherever else you want motion sensed "on" with a timed automatic "off" function. https://smile.amazon.com/Lutron-LRF2-OCR2B-P-WH-Wireless-Ceiling-Mounted-Occupancy/dp/B005LPET0G/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1507124919&sr=8-4&keywords=lutron+motion+sensor |
Question: | What remote switches are compatible with this for multi-location use |
Answer: | We use ours with a standard 3-way decora switch. It is simple to wire and works great if you have a small room and don't need more than one sensor switch. |
Question: | Do you need a neutral wire |
Answer: | No. But, while I'm here, I'll add a gripe of mine. You cannot set the motion on brightness level. its always on full. You can set the 'tap on' brightness level, but that's really not too helpful. After all, it is a motion detecting switch... If you're planning to walk into a room and the lights to come on to a less-than-full brightness level, this is NOT the device for you. |

Question: | Can this be used to replace an outdoor light switch |
Answer: | Lutron's answer is no, they say it's for indoor use only. The operating temp range is 32*F to 104*F. I have motion sensing lights both in front and back of my house and they work just fine. They drive the raccoons and possums away from the trash cans. I also have a daylight sensor on my front porch, it automatically comes on when it starts to get dark and turns off when the sun comes up. I like it because I don't have to adjust a timer for the change of seasons. Hope this helps, good luck! |
Question: | Is it okay to install it in a bathroom with a shower? And will the ultrasound sense movement of someone showering behind a closed glass shower door |
Answer: | The MS-A202 is able to detect very fine motion using Lutron's XCT Technology. You can reference the sensor range and frequency it uses to detect motion by viewing page 5 of the spec sheet here: http://www.lutron.com/TechnicalDocumentLibrary/369773_ENG.pdf. If the sensor is unable to pick up ultrasonic motion behind a closed shower door, Lutron recommends increasing the timeout feature accordingly, which can be referenced on page 2 of the install guide here: http://www.lutron.com/TechnicalDocumentLibrary/032454.pdf. |
