User questions & answers
Question: | is this te 3rd Gen hub |
Answer: | As long as your router also has an ethernet port. This is to replace your wifi network. For instance, I have a cable modem with two ethernet ports and a wifi network. I disabled the wifi on my cable modem and plugged this Samsung into the ethernet port. Then changed all my devices to attach to the new wifi network provided by this device. I could have probably just used the same SSID for the new network and not require changing any of the other devices but decided to create a new one. |
Question: | Can this work without Ethernet wire plugged in, if the main hub has Ethernet wire plugged in itself |
Answer: | The units I purchased (Nov. 2018) support port forwarding and uPNP. They do not support DDNS. There is no newer firmware, and no USB port. I'm pretty sure these are the same units being shipped today. A few things to consider: These units were designed by Plume and are managed with a special version of the Plume app. However, you cannot call Plume for support (they will send you to Samsung), and Samsung SmartThings support knows next to nothing about them (as of July 2020). They will not take Plume firmware updates, because they've been modified for the SmartThings hub functionality, and Samsung has not updated the WiFi software on them since October of 2018 (they have updated the Hub software many times, which happens automatically). They don't have many other customization features that you would expect from a typical WiFi router, either. They are very much 'plug and play' devices for people that just want stuff to work, and they do well at that. If you want more functionality (as I did), you can put them in 'bridge mode', which disables the router, firewall, and DHCP functions, and then did all the fancy stuff with a typical WiFi router and firewall (you could use your old WiFi router with the WiFi disabled); the pods are then strictly for the WiFi part of the setup - set the SSID and password on them, and you are done. Just don't forget that your cable modem and router/firewall are also potential performance bottlenecks separate from the WiFi. The basic 'mesh' functionality is automatic, works well, and is seamless. It will significantly improve coverage in your home without any extra work. But for the best performance, there is definitely a benefit in running an Ethernet cable to each device back to your router or cable modem (whether in bridge mode or not). This avoids multiple WiFi hops and reduces WiFi spectrum congestion. It requires no configuration change, they figure it out among themselves. If you can do this, there is one other thing that you might find convenient, and that is to run PoE (Power over Ethernet) and get rid of the power supply - nice if you have them stuck on the ceiling. This is not a function of the pod, but you need a PoE switch or PoE power injectors on one end, and then a PoE adapter to plug in to the pod end (a little split cable thingy converting from Ethernet in to Ethernet out + power out). That's more than most people will bother with, but it does work. The 'SmartHub' function will be taken on by the first one plugged in when you originally connect them, and this particular device will remain the hub forever, so if that one is unplugged, one of the others will not take over that job unless you reset them all. All in all, they have worked well for me (I'm a network and security engineer) with over 50 WiFi devices running, and individual WiFi nodes getting SpeedTest numbers of over 500Mbps down (my base XFinity service is 720 Mbps down, faster than most WiFi devices). Just don't ask Samsung SmartThings support too many questions (Like a) why does the app always tell me my network is down, when the app is clearly running over it? Or b) why do they still have 1.5 year old code when I get messages that they have auto-updated regularly?) Such questions will just confuse them - they really don't know, and they will take 1-2 weeks for them to say that they don't know. (Answers: a) because the app doesn't understand bridge mode - I tried it and told them; and b) they only update the hub firmware, not the Plume firmware - support didn't even know there WERE two different pieces of firmware until I gave them the two version #s). |
Question: | Ok, so i am dumb- i have a wireless router (not a samsung) am i wrong in thinking that this will work with it? do i need a samsung router |
Answer: | No need to connect WiFi and Bluetooth. As long as it is a device with Zigbee function, you can connect the zigbee smart plug. For example, alexa echo plus, just plug in and ask "Alexa, discover device". |
Question: | Is port forwarding supported? is ddns supported |
Answer: | Sure, zigbee plug is compatible with smartthings hub. They work very well together. I plan to buy more smart plugs to use with my home equipment. |

Question: | Having trouble paring with Ring - any advice? Keeps saying device not found |
Answer: | Don't try pairing as a smart light. Go under set up a device then security devices and scroll down to "works with ring". That will walk you through pairing. I just did it with GE 14291 |
Question: | Is this comparable with turning on and off mutable lights? I have 2 switches controlling 2 lights |
Answer: | This model is specifically designed to replace a standard light switch in a residential home. It is 3-way compatible, to work with a GE add-on switch so the 2 of them together can replace 2 light switches and both control the same light(s). |
Question: | Is there an led indicator on the switch itself when it's in on/off |
Answer: | Yes, there is an LED indicator light on the bottom right hand corner of the switch. It is default set for the LED indicator to be On, when the connected light is turned off. This allow the switch to be found in the dark. You can also change the LED light by pressing 3 times up, and 1 time down quickly to cycle between 3 other options (LED ON when Connected Light is ON, LED always off, LED always on) You can see details of these 4 options in the instruction manual. |
Question: | Will this work as part of a 3-way switch |
Answer: | Yes, you will need This GE 46201 and the GE 46199 Add-On Switch to replace the 2 switches in the 3-way installation. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use the motion sensor of this smart switch in smartthings to turn off smart thermostat if the sensor does not detect motion for 2 hours |
Answer: | Yes, the wire-free dimmer switch will work with our light strip. |
Question: | How long is the delay from when motion is detected and the lights turn on? I've seen some long times for z-wave sensors |
Answer: | The current version of the app does not allow for a "follow the sun" type feature, unfortunately. Keep a lookout for the new version of the app that is slated to come out in a few months though. It is packed with all sorts of features that the old one does not currently offer. I believe that you can set up scenes within the Alexa app and then set automation to run those scenes with a trigger being sunrise. It's important to note though: the wire-free devices only work in the C by GE app and they can only control C by GE lights. So, this product would not be compatible with Alexa app only the bulbs it controls would be. This switch is also not a hub for our bulbs and would not work to link your C by GE bulbs to your Alexa device. |
Question: | Are these fully compatible with Smartthings |
Answer: | The most common commands that we have tested and confirmed work with our devices through Hubs like SmartThings, Iris, or Wink are as follows:1. On (This will return the light to the last set brightness level)2. Off, 3. Specific percentage (1% all the way to 100% for full brightness)4. Brighten (Increments up 25% from current light level)5. Dim (Increments down 25% from current light level)With that said, the GE 14294 must be connected to a Z-Wave certified hub that is integrated with Alexa to allow control from an Alexa enabled device. Because the commands are sent to the hub specifically, we may not have the full list of commands capable of controlling lighting devices. |
Question: | will this work with the wink 2 hub |
Answer: | Yes, the physical button and LED light are identical between the GE 14294 and GE 12724 |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this control fan and it's speed? I currently have a fan toggle switch which has a tine slider underneath, can I replace it with this switch |
Answer: | This model is a switch only and could only control a fan to turn on and off. |
Question: | The face place doesnt seem to sit flush with the wall due to how big the switch is. New home, switch is screwed down as far as it will go. Suggestions |
Answer: | If the wiring behind the switch is pushing the switch out the only recommendation we could offer would be to contact a licensed electrician to redo or trim out any excess wiring behind the switch location. If the switch box is a much older or smaller than standard switch box, it may be necessary to remove and replace the switch box with a more standard box. |
Question: | Why is the timer disabled every time it used |
Answer: | The GE 46202 does not contain a timer. If you are referencing a timer function on the hub/controller that you use to control this device, then it would be necessary to contact the support team of that specific hub. This product simply receives a command when the hub is ready to turn it on/off from schedules, scenes, groups, etc. It does not interact with those functions on the hub though. |
Question: | I feel confident that I installed correctly, but when I manually flip the switch it fails. Anyone run into trouble that they can give any tips on |
Answer: | This switch is designed to work manually even if it isnt connected to a Z-Wave controller. While you are confident, the most common issue is either wires becoming disconnected when everything is pushed back into the junction box, or something not being wired correctly. This switch requires 4 wires to be connected to the back of the switch. Line, Load, and Ground are only 3 of those wires that are connected to a standard switch that you replaced this with. You will also need a neutral wire as well. This is typically a bundle of white wires in the back of the box. You will need to take the white jumper wire included in the box and connect it to the neutral terminal on the back of this switch, then connect it into the bundle of neutrals in the switch box. If you removed 1 neutral from the bundle and connected it into this switch, then it is necessary to put it back into the bundle and use the jumper wire included instead. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this work with echo dot 3 and/or echo flex |
Answer: | I started with just a switch and Alexa, I have many Echo devices. When I paired it, it came up as a Plug not a Switch, but it worked. I got a second one with the Third Reality smart hub. So I paired it through that and the Third Reality App and it came up a switch. All that said, once the devices are set up in the Third Reality App, just link The Third Reality App to Alexa. Then Alexa will control it. |
Question: | Will it hook up the ge zigbee fan switch |
Answer: | We have not tested it. |
Question: | Is there a maximum number of switches the hub will work with? I was able to pair 12 switches but cannot seem to get any more to pair |
Answer: | I just have 4. |
Question: | Does this hub act like any other Zigbee hub, meaning can this be used for other zigbee products |
Answer: | Yes if other devices follow Zigbee standard. |

User questions & answers
Question: | If this is switched to the off position, will my automations still work? Or will that disconnect it like a regular household switch does |
Answer: | Thanks for reaching out! The switch being in the off position will cause it to disconnect from the app which prevents automations from working. Feel free to reach out to us directly if you have any additional questions. -C by GE Support |
Question: | Does the Paddle rest in the middle. So press up on the paddle to turn on and press down to turn off |
Answer: | Great question! the bottom part of the paddle is the only part that would need to be pressed to operate the switch. |
Question: | Will a pet set the motion detection sensor |
Answer: | Depends on where your light switch located but my dog doesn't set it off. He is a 12 pound lap dog. I guess if you have a larger animal then maybe. |
Question: | I have a ceiling fan, can this work with that as well? It has bulbs too |
Answer: | If your ceiling fan and the lights attached to the ceiling fan are controlled by the same switch, this will not work as intended. |

Product description
Expand your control with the GE-branded In-Wall Add-on Switch. When paired with a GE-branded smart switch or dimmer, including Z-Wave, Zigbee and Bluetooth controls, the hardwired device completes multi-switch systems. Wirelessly operate and schedule indoor or outdoor fixtures from up to five locations for effortless management of your home.
- WHY AN ADD-ON SWITCH – Add-on switches allow GE-branded in-wall smart controls to operate correctly in multi-switch configurations. By connecting directly to the smart device, the add-on mirrors its functions. This feature allows you to dim lights, adjust fan speeds, turn fixtures ON/OFF and more based on the capabilities of the primary smart device. While the add-on switch is not a stand-alone device, it provides continued use of your favorite smart-device functions from multiple locations.
- ULTIMATE FLEXIBILITY – Compatible with any GE-branded smart control to operate lights or devices from multiple locations. The add-on switch sends commands to the connected in-wall Z-Wave or Zigbee switch, dimmer or fan control for full use of home automation features in 3-way configurations. For easy installation, the add-on switch only requires neutral, traveler and ground wires. It cannot be used as a standalone switch.
- Requires a GE Home Automation Switch. This is NOT a standalone switch. (This product is an add-on only switch, and requires an existing GE Home Automation Switch to function. Without a GE Home Automation Switch, the Add-On Switch WILL NOT OPERATE.)
- MULTI-SWITCH OPERATION – Easily replace any in-wall control in a multi-switch configuration to support the features of the primary smart device to which it is connected. Up to four add-on switches can be added to a smart switch or dimmer to operate fixtures from as many as five locations.
- COMPATIBLE DEVICES – The add-on switch mirrors the functions of the primary smart device. It offers ON/OFF control when paired with a switch, dims when connected to a dimmer, adjusts speed when used with a fan control and many other home-automation commands.
- EASY INSTALLATION – Requires indoor in-wall installation with hardwired connections. NEUTRAL WIRE REQUIRED. Wall plate not included. Works with LED, CFL, incandescent and halogen bulbs as well as other fixtures based on the primary device functionality.
User questions & answers
Question: | i m confused. are all the add on and main switches supposed to control a single light |
Answer: | The Add-On Switch cannot control a light by itself and doesnt contain a wireless radio. It is designed for use with a GE Z-Wave/Zigbee/Bluetooth In-Wall Smart Switch to replace an existing 3-way installation in your home. 3-way installations are when you have 2 light switches controlling the same light(s) such as 2 switches on either side of a long hallway controlling the light in the middle, or 2 switches on the top and bottom of a stairwell that control the light in the middle. If you have multiple lights that all wire to different switches, you will need a Smart Switch to replace each switch. You would not use an add-on switch for those instances. |
Question: | Any chance these are compatible with wemo |
Answer: | No. Wemo is a WiFi switch |
Question: | What parts do I need on both ends for this switch to replace a three way switch? Thanks |
Answer: | You will need This model GE 12728 as well as a either the GE 14292 (Switch model) or GE 14295 (Dimmer model). Once installed you will need a Z-Wave Hub/Controller such as SmartThings, Wink, or other hub to control the Z-Wave switch or dimmer you chose. |
Question: | Will this switch work for a Non 3 way application |
Answer: | One confusion here is that there is more than one switch for this listing, so asking about "this switch" might be hard to answer. SO I want to be very clear. Either the GE 12727 or 12729 will absolutely work as a 2 pole switch. It does not have to be used as a 3-way only. For a regular 2-way switch you just keep the traveler terminal insulated. Right out of the box, that's actually the way they come. You have to remove a tape tab if you want to use them as a 3-way switch. Note that for 3-way or 4-way operation, yo need the "add on" switch (also listed on here). |

User questions & answers
Question: | What alexa commands can you give this when paired with a hub? can you give it a name and dim to a percent: "alexa dim living room lights to |
Answer: | The most common commands that we have tested and confirmed work with our devices through Hubs like SmartThings, Iris, or Wink are as follows:1. |
Question: | Does the 14294 have the same blue light as the 12724? I'm mounting them side by side and want them to match |
Answer: | Yes, the physical button and LED light are identical between the GE 14294 and GE 12724 |
Question: | Will this ge z-wave plus dimmer in-wall switch work as a 3 way with the appropriate add on switch such as |
Answer: | The answer is yes. You can pair the 12723 with either the in wall paddle switch or the in wall paddle dimmer. |
Question: | One of my switches wont turn off the led light bulb. the bulb always stays on dim. do i have a bad switch |
Answer: | No, likely the problem is with the bulb. The LED bulbs need to be dimmer comparable. It is worth noting that some say they re comparable and are not. DR |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this product compatible with a HomeLink system that is installed in many vehicles |
Answer: | I'm so sorry, I didn't really pay any attention to the packaging on that part. Just that I know the led bulbs last forever. I have this exact Tree of Life Coverlite and LOVE IT! I know it lights when it's dreary from a rainy day inside, which is very nice. I love the feature that it turns itself on when it starts getting a little dark and goes off when the sun comes in. And it only cost pennies a year to operate!!! How great is that??? There very well may be a way to change the bulb. I'm hoping you aren't having any problem with yours. It should last a long time. It couldn't hurt to ask next time in you go to a Lowe's or Walmart. But they are so cheap to be so beautiful, you my just want to purchase extra lights. That's what I do just about every time I order. Last time I purchased the ornate one with the candle that flickers like it's really lit. Sorry for such a long answer to a yes, no, I don't know question. For the price of the light and yearly cost, you just can't beat these little jewels. And they make wonderful little Christmas presents that look so expensive. Hope I was of some help. I'm a 63 yr old woman and some things never change. A woman just loves to chat. Have a wonderful day!t' |

Question: | Can this switch connect to and control C by GE smart plugs? and/or third party smart plugs |
Answer: | It will work with the C by GE Smart Plug by adding them to the same room within the C by GE app. It will not work with 3rd party products. |
Question: | I have ge smart lights, if i buy this and turn the switch off will the light bulb still work properly |
Answer: | This took me a while to figure out but as long as all the bulbs being powered of this switch are C by GE light bulbs and you tell the switch that through the C by GE app on your phone, then yes, they will remain always connected. However, if just one bulb off the switch isn't a C by GE smart bulb this setting won't work right. |
