12 best dimmers with switches
Dimmers with switches, often referred to as combination dimmer switches, offer the convenience of both dimming and regular on/off switch functionality in a single unit. These devices are commonly used in residential and commercial settings to control lighting fixtures. Here's what you need to know about dimmers with switches:
Dual Functionality: Dimmers with switches allow you to control the brightness of connected lighting fixtures while also providing the ability to turn the lights on or off like a standard switch. This dual functionality is convenient because it eliminates the need for separate dimmer switches and standard switches.
Compatibility: Like standalone dimmer switches, dimmers with switches come in various types and models designed for specific lighting technologies. Ensure that you choose a dimmer switch that is compatible with the type of bulbs or fixtures you plan to use (e.g., incandescent, LED, CFL).
Single-Pole or Three-Way: Dimmers with switches are available in both single-pole and three-way configurations. Single-pole dimmer switches are used when only one switch controls the lights, while three-way dimmers are used in conjunction with another switch to control the same lights from multiple locations.
Installation: Installing a dimmer with a switch is similar to installing a regular light switch. However, the wiring might be a bit more complex if you are replacing an existing switch with a dimmer switch. It's crucial to follow the manufacturer's installation instructions and, if necessary, consult an electrician.
Design and Style: Dimmers with switches come in various designs and styles to match your decor. They are available in a range of finishes, colors, and button styles to complement your interior design.
Dimming Range: The dimming range of a dimmer with a switch varies by model. Some offer a wider range of brightness adjustments, allowing you to set the light level precisely to your liking.
Compatibility with Dimmable LEDs: If you plan to use dimmable LED bulbs, make sure the dimmer with a switch is designed to work effectively with LEDs. Not all dimmers are compatible with all LED bulbs, and using an incompatible dimmer can result in flickering or other issues.
Smart Dimmer Switches: Some dimmers with switches are part of smart home systems and can be controlled remotely using a smartphone app or voice commands when integrated with platforms like Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, or Apple HomeKit.
Energy Efficiency: Dimming your lights with dimmer switches can help save energy and extend the lifespan of bulbs, especially when used with LED bulbs.
Brand Options: There are several reputable brands that manufacture dimmers with switches, such as Lutron, Leviton, Legrand, and others. Consider the features, compatibility, and reputation of the brand when making your selection.
Dimmers with switches provide flexibility and convenience when it comes to controlling the lighting in your home or workspace. Choosing the right dimmer with switch based on your specific needs, compatibility requirements, and design preferences can enhance your overall lighting experience.

Question: | Are there a 2, 3 snd 4 gang wall plates for these |
Answer: | I doubt it, but contact mfg., they are very responsive. |
Question: | installed but not turning on when the slide is in between and also hear some sound when you keep your ears on switch in dim mode . anyone else faced |
Answer: | Check the display is ON or OFF on the top left connor, it should show ON then the device can work. |
Question: | can this dimmer be used on 12 volt LED lamps |
Answer: | What I think was being asked is if this meter can tell you the PEAK load during the time it was connected. For example, let's say it was connected to a refrigerator for 10 hours. Let's say that during that 10 hours the load in Watts was 150Watts. But, when the compressor kicks in, it surges to 2000Watts for 3 seconds. Will this device allow you to see that 2000Watt PEAK later? Does it store that PEAK load into memory so you can view it? |

User questions & answers
Question: | I plan on using this with a track lighting kit that uses dimmable leds. do i need anything (transformer?) between this switch and the track fixture |
Answer: | It would depend on the rack light system you use. If it uses 120v lamps then no. if it is a lower voltage lamp system it would have its own transformer as part of its installation and this dimmer is probably not what you need. You would then want a dimmer designed for low voltage applications. As far as I know though there is no hard and fast rule on this today as all the dimmers and transformers are electronic and may or may not be compatible with other electronic devices including the led drivers fjord the particular lamps in the track system you select. You should consult with the dealer you ate purchasing from and the installing electrician. If you ate doing it yourself you'll need do your research through the manufacturers of the equipment for comparability like the electrician would. |
Question: | What size bulb can be used with this dimmer? There seem to be all kinds of size bulbs available |
Answer: | That's right in the description: 150 watts LED / CFL, 600 watts incandescent. Just add the power requirements of all the bulbs controlled by the dimmer. For example, I'm using it to control 4 60 watt incandescent bulbs, total 240 watts. For LEDs / CFLs, use the actual power required, not the "equivalency". So a 23-watt CFL that says it's as bright as a 100 watt incandescent still only counts as 23 watts. |
Question: | difference in led and incandescent lighting dimmers |
Answer: | Some incandescent dimmers modify the output of the power in such a way that it either won't work at all or can damage the LED dimmer. LED dimmers I believe use finer PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) which will work with all dimming bulbs - incandescent, CFL, and LED bulbs. Using LED bulbs with a non-LED dimmer is a bad thing as is using LEDs that are not designed to be dimmed at all. The payback for the additional expense of the LED dimmer is pretty quick if it removes a large enough incandescent light bulb. |
Question: | Led dimmable bulb is flickering with this switch, is it bad |
Answer: | Problem: Flickering or FlashingPossible Cause #1: Incorrect VoltageLED downlights have a specified input voltage. Incorrect voltage to the driver can cause the LED to flicker or toflash on and off. * Check the input voltage of the driver (Ex: 120V) then check the voltage being delivered to the fixture (Ex: 277V). There may be a mismatch. If possible, replace the driver on the downlight for one with the correct input voltage to match the line voltage or, if that is not an option, install an applicable voltage transformer to the line voltage to achieve the required input voltage for the original fixture.Possible Cause #2: Incompatible DimmerIf the LED downlight was not designed for a particular dimming load or if the driver is not compatible with thedimming control then issues may occur. * Try bypassing the dimming circuit. If the LED functions normally then an incompatible dimmer or dimming load may be the issue or the driver is not a dimming driver. Consult factory to determine whether the driver is dimmable and, if so, what kind of dimmer is compatible with the driver. Please check this web link for a list of factory qualified compatible dimmers: http://www.liton.com/webcatalog/brochures/wp_dimmingfacts.pdfPossible Cause #3: Occupancy Sensor/Control Rated WattageThese controls sometimes have a minimum rated wattage in order to function correctly. For example, theremaybe a minimum of 20W required for the control unit but the LED might only consume 10W. * Add additional fixtures to the circuit to get to the required wattage for the dimming control or replace the dimming control unit with one that has a lower wattage requirement.remedyremedyremedycontinue...TROUBLESHOOTINGLED DOWNLIGHTSA DIVISION OF EEMA LIGHTING GROUP * 5461 WEST JEFFERSON BLVD., LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA * PH: 323.904.0200 (1 800 515 4880)FAX: 323.904.0201 (1 800 972 4880)Problem: Flickering or Flashing cont..Possible Cause #4: Dimmer OverloadA common problem with LED dimming is the inadvertent overloading of the LED driver. LED drivers are rated fora maximum load (measured in volts, amps and/or watts) that must not be exceeded. The number of lamps that can be installed on a single-phase control dimmer may seem to be an easy calculation. For example, suppose you want to know how many 15W LED fixtures can be installed on a 600W dimmer. Youmight divide the 600W by 15W and determine that you could control 40 fixtures. Unfortunately, that result mightbe wrong. In fact, you may only be able to use 6 LED fixtures on a dimmer rated for 600W.Even though the LED fixture may draw only 15W continuously, there may be a start-up in-rush current or arepetitive half cycle surge that makes the dimmer think that the current is much higher. That 15W LED fixturemay appear to the dimmer as a 100W incandescent load. If that happens and you are using more than 6 LEDfixtures, you will overload the dimmer. The average start-up or half-cycle stress that has been observed is the equivalent of a 100W incandescent lamp, even for LED loads of less than 20W! * For 10W & 15W Liton -DLV products, consult the charts in the LED Dimming Facts Guide to reference tested maximums by dimmer. * Remove the dimmer from the line to see if the problem is solved. * Change dimmer to one with a higher maximum load. * Split the circuit into multiple loads.Possible Cause #5: Dimmer UnderloadSome dimmers may not perform well if too little load is put on them. A minimum number of fixtures may berequired to operate correctly due to the 25W - 40W minimum load that most incandescent dimmers require tooperate correctly under all conditions. When using incandescent bulbs, the minimum load requirement waseasily met. However, with LED four or more loads may be required for a dimmer to reach the required minimumload. * For 10W & 15W Liton - DLV products, consult the charts in the LED Dimming Facts Guide to reference tested minimum by dimmer. * Remove the dimmer from the line to see if the problem is solved. * Change dimmer to one with a lower minimum load. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this item post to China directly from your warehouse |
Answer: | No it will not. The 2nd switch will have to be the Decora smart remote switch. You can fine them listed here. http://www.leviton.com/en/products/lighting-controls/decora-smart-with-homekit-technologyI was not very happy with a 3way set up. There is a lag when the remote switch is used. The lag is short but long enough to make you question if you hit the switch correctly. |
Question: | Do these come in a version without the logo on the front |
Answer: | I tested this as I have a camera in my Garage where I have the switch located. I was at work, Asked Siri to turn on Garage lights and I could see them turn on. Then I turned them off. So ti does work off your network. Now it doesn't say anything about needing a 4th Generation Apple TV to work outside of your network like some other devices I've seen mentioned. So I have no idea if that's true or not. But I do happen to have 2 of them, so maybe that's why it works for me?!?!?! Maybe that's part of the Homekit specs? The AppleTV 4th generation being a bridge to the outside world. Looking through the instructions, I can't find a single thing about AppleTV. |
Question: | Is there a compatible led edison e26 bulb |
Answer: | To long to read: wifi limited to routers only able to give out 32 ip addresses. Wifi slow even with the switch having line of sight. Wifi clutter in apt and neighborhoods. Lutron hub doesnt have these issues Actually lutron hub uses a proprietary frequency that is optimal to go through walls and not cluttered with wifi enabled devices. My router can only handle 64 devices but 32 hardwire and 32 wifi and after months of trying leviton i am choosing to lutron my whole house. Dont get me wrong. If you want a few smart switches, this is cheap. If you own a house or live in apt good luck fighting for wifi space. I live in a neighborhood with around 14 wifi spots. My second router exclusivly for iot is 20ft wih line of sight. And this switch is too slow for me. When i open my home app all my lutrons are reconzied. I contantly get issues with this leviton. Its like in some power safe mode. Lutron hub is great because i dont have to give them ip addresses and can have 50 switches throughout my home. Yeah wifi limitations are real. Wifi switches are terrible. I've had logi pop, wemo, leviton none of them work as easy and fast as lutron. Even the app looks better than leviton. |
Question: | I installed these dimmers with LEDP3120WH - 120V Direct LED Puck Light Kit. When I turn the power back on the lights pulse/flicker constantly. Ideas |
Answer: | I can't answer that, but I will say that requiring a hub is no big deal, and in many ways a hub is an advantage. One obvious advantage is that it works with multiple protocols, such as HomeKit, Alexa, and Google Home. And a hub can also run a schedule for your lights (on a dusk, off at dawn, random when you're away, etc.). If I'm spending $1,000+ on switches and dimmers for my house, does it really matter if I have to spend another $50 or so on a hub? "Requires no hub" is marketed as a feature, but a hub never bothered me and you give up too much no having on. Long story short: they could, if they used a hub. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is anyone using this with an LED and if so, for how long and how is it working? Thanks |
Answer: | I'm using this with two 12.5W Soraa High-CRI "Vivid" series LED PAR30 4000K bulbs (total controlled load: 25W) and it is the finest dimmer switch I've ever used. With the "Advanced mode" custom programming (Technical document: www.lutron.com/TechnicalDocumentLibrary/048459.pdf) to adjust the "low trim" (dimmest point) I can get these bulbs to be on and stable at only |
Question: | Can this handle dimming LED lights all the way down so they are actually dim, like the incandescents? Yes, I have an LED light bulb that is dimmable |
Answer: | I have the Wafer 6 in. White Integrated LED Recessed Kit that Home Depot sells. They say they can go down to 10%.. I had another switch in previously that the lights wouldn't dim down as far and would turn off randomly when dimmed down all the way. If you use the adjustment feature in this switch it seems like they go down to that no problem. I've been running them for a day and no flickering or turning off. If anything changes I'll leave an updated comment or update this answer. Two factors you'll need to look at: 1) what is the LED bulb rated to go down to 2) Is this dimmer compatible? If your LED bulb says it can do it try many different dimmers until one works :) |
Question: | The max brightness seems lower than when I had a non-digital dimmer. How do I adjust? I see instructions for the lower dim range but not the max |
Answer: | Please see Lutron's Application Note #459. All of these settings are NOT listed in the manual that came with your switch. www.lutron.com/TechnicalDocumentLibrary/048459.pdf You want to adjust IL7, the high-end trim.IL1: Preset Light Level (last setting or set permanently)IL2: Fade ON Time (0.75 to 15.0 seconds)IL3: Fade OFF Time (0.75 to 15.0 seconds)IL4: Delayed Fade to OFF (time to leave the room - 10 to 70 seconds)IL5: Enable/Disable Indicator Lights (LED dots off or on)IL6: Low-End Trim (minimum brightness)IL7: High-End Trim (maximum brightness) |
Question: | how much power do led indicator lights draw |
Answer: | Approximately 0.02 Watts (2 cents per year at $0.10/kWh) if they did the job right of designing it (switching converter,) and 0.25 Watts (20 cents per year at $0.10/kWh) if they took the lazy way out (simple resistor.) |

User questions & answers
Question: | I live in an old house, My switches only have 1wire, the hot. No ground and no neutral in my wall switch boxes. Will this work for me |
Answer: | You could use this in conjunction with the Insteon 2475F FanLinc Insteon Dual-Band Ceiling Fan and Light Controller, to controll the light functions. Use your remote to control the fan functions. The switch is of course unnecessary however. |
Question: | Can you program 2 remotes to work with one switch? I want one wall mounted and one hand held |
Answer: | This item needs to work with an Insteon hub, there is a hub that works with HomeKit. But this is a combination I have not tried. |
Question: | Does anyone know if this dimmer works on a three way switch |
Answer: | The Smarthome page for the 2466DW says nothing about dual-band. Neither the quickstart guide nor the owners manual say anything about dual-band. The owners manual states, in more than one place, that you need to "make sure you have installed at least two Access Points (#2443) or other dual-band INSTEON products". I think it's pretty certain that this product is NOT dual-band. |
Question: | I purchased the Lutron P-PKG1W-WH and my new LED bulbs are flickering when being dimmed. They are dimmable bulbs and I have tried 2 different brands |
Answer: | Yes. I have the 2466DW installed in my kitchen in a 3-gang switch box in the center between two other standard Lutron toggle switches. I needed the Insteon as it was the only toggle style dimmer switch compatible with controlling the low-voltage(twicebright CL1220TL) mini-recessed lights that use dimmable LED bulbs above my sink. The switch is high quality and easy to program for the desired on level. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How long do the batteries last |
Answer: | It's going to depend on how often you use it. I have not gotten more than a year on the rooms I use every day. Make sure you don't over tighten that tiny screw on the battery door! Terrible design that makes it very easy to strip the screw. |
Question: | If i buy a second dimmer switch, will it be independent of the one i already have? i don’t want all lights to come on |
Answer: | You would have to programme it to be associated with a particular bulb or group of bulbs, so it would be independent of the current dimmer and any bulbs you have by default. However, if you buy one of the dimmer packs that include a bulb, sometimes the dimmer is already paired with the included bulb, so you would have to reset the dimmer in this instance. |
Question: | Do you need to use an app for this or will it just work with the bulb and remote |
Answer: | I purchased this via ebay. No. You do not need the app. Both the bulb and the remote will work fine without the Philips Hue Hub. The Philips Hue Hub is a product that allows the bulbs to interface with your phone. This system is designed to work out of the box with each other. The remote comes preprogrammed for the bulb. However, it is possible to purchase the Philips Hue Hub to use the (free) Philips Hue app with this bulb and with other bulbs in your possession, and that will allow you to re-set up the remote to accomplish more specific and varied effects like launching scenes that you have created. I am guessing that users who report needing app to set up the remote, first purchased a Philips Hue Starter Kit, (which comes with a Hub), and thus have only ever experienced using a Philips Hue Dimmer Switch with respect to the Philips Hue app, which will of course require a setup of the switch to integrate it into your existing system. This set will work conveniently and consistently out of the box. No phone, app, or Hub required. |
Question: | What happens in a power cut? When power is restored, does the light come on? Or does it return to it's last off/on state |
Answer: | Currently there are three options for the feature of Power On Behavior (which you can find in the Hue app at Settings). You can pick between: Philips Hue default, which will make your lights go back on on warm white, full brightness. Power loss recovery, which will make your lights turn on on the last used color and brightness according to the Hue app (of which Off is also a state). And as last, you can also pick custom, where you can choose your own color and brightness. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I've bought 2 different dimmers for my recessed led lights. both produced a humming noise. any humming with this switch |
Answer: | I started with this dimmer and LED lights in my recessed cans... heard the hum and scrapped the LED lights for traditional incandescent. No more hum! |
Question: | does anyone make a dual dimmer like this for LED lights |
Answer: | I installed this switch four days ago in my kitchen. I have it controlling LED Gu10 and LED A19 bulbs. The switch works ok with them. A few of the Gu10 bulbs flicker as the bulbs turn on but once at full brightness, they work flawlessly. I really didn't buy the switch to dim bulbs, just to control the lights and after using a double rocker switch for 10 years I wanted a change and there aren't many options so I opted for this switch. It looks pretty cool but if u are looking for dimming functionality with Gu10 bulbs, this may not be the option for you. The A19 bulbs dim without a problem. Tonight I noticed when I turned on the light, that at full brightness, two of the Gu10 bulbs were blinking but only for twenty seconds and since then I've turned the light on several times and it hasn't happened again so we will see.......I really don't feel like going back to the double rocker switch again. |
Question: | Do you make a dual switch that is rated for LED recessed lights |
Answer: | Currently, Lutron does not have a dual control rated for use with LED lighting. Lutron logs all its customer inquiries and feedback. This information is vital for our Engineering and Product Development teams. Please feel free to reach out to our Support Team at [email protected] or by phone at 1 (844) 588-7661 with any questions/concerns. |
Question: | Does lutron make a led compatible version of this dimmer switch being dual stack |
Answer: | Shhhh. Don’t tell anyone, but these switches work just fine with the LED lights in my bathroom. I bought two of these Lutron switches because I needed to add 4 light switches in a 2 gang box. With the exception of one existing light switch, I added three additional lights which all needed to have their own switch. I used the AWESOME Lithonia Lighting wafer thin 6-inch (and one 4-inch) led discs which act like canister lights but are thinner than drywall. With the exception of the 4-inch light, these all work very well with this Lutron dimmer. The 4-inch disc will turn on but when you turn it off, it remains lit at very low lumens which actually acts as a nightlight over the toilet, so I am not bothered by ti. The 6-inch, and the regular LED vanity bulbs work perfectly fine with this switch. |
