14 best dimmer switch for leds
Dimmer switches for LEDs are essential electrical devices used to control the brightness of LED lighting fixtures. They are commonly used in homes and commercial spaces to create adjustable lighting levels to suit different moods and tasks. Here are some key points about dimmer switches for LEDs:
LED Compatibility: Not all dimmer switches are compatible with LED lights. It's crucial to choose dimmers specifically designed for LED lighting to ensure smooth and flicker-free dimming performance.
Types of Dimmer Switches:
- Rotary Dimmers: These are traditional dimmer switches with a rotary knob that allows you to adjust the brightness level by turning the knob.
- Slide Dimmers: Slide dimmer switches have a sliding control that moves up and down to adjust the brightness.
- Touch Dimmers: Touch-sensitive dimmers have a touchpad or button interface for adjusting light levels.
- Smart Dimmers: Smart dimmer switches can be controlled remotely through a smartphone app or integrated with smart home systems like Wi-Fi or Zigbee for voice control and automation.
Compatibility with Dimmable LEDs: When shopping for a dimmer switch, check the product description to ensure it is compatible with the specific dimmable LED bulbs or fixtures you plan to use. Dimmers may have minimum and maximum load requirements, so make sure your LEDs fall within the specified range.
Dimming Range: Different dimmer switches offer varying dimming ranges. Some can adjust lighting levels from full brightness to a very low, subtle glow, while others have limited range. Choose a dimmer that provides the desired level of control.
Multi-Location Dimming: If you want to control the same set of LEDs from multiple locations (e.g., a three-way or four-way setup), look for dimmer switches designed for multi-location dimming. They require compatible companion switches or remote controls.
LED Flicker and Buzz: Incompatible dimmer switches can cause LED lights to flicker or produce a buzzing noise. Choosing the right dimmer designed for LEDs can help eliminate these issues.
Installation: Installing a dimmer switch typically involves electrical wiring and should be done by a qualified electrician if you're not experienced with electrical work. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and local electrical codes.
Dimmer Accessories: Some dimmer switches may require additional accessories, such as a neutral wire or a specific wall plate. Be sure to check the requirements before installation.
Energy Savings: Dimming LED lights not only allows you to create the desired ambiance but also helps save energy when you lower the brightness, reducing electricity consumption and extending the lifespan of the LED bulbs.
Warranty: Consider purchasing dimmer switches from reputable brands that offer warranties. This can provide peace of mind in case of defects or issues with the switch.
Overall, dimmer switches for LEDs offer versatility and convenience when it comes to lighting control. By selecting the right dimmer switch and ensuring compatibility with your LED lighting, you can enhance your lighting experience and potentially save on energy costs.

User questions & answers
Question: | Where is it made? USA |
Answer: | No sounds from mine. Make sure your bulbs a dimmable type? Just a guess. |
Question: | Are there a 2, 3 snd 4 gang wall plates for these |
Answer: | I doubt it, but contact mfg., they are very responsive. |
Question: | installed but not turning on when the slide is in between and also hear some sound when you keep your ears on switch in dim mode . anyone else faced |
Answer: | Check the display is ON or OFF on the top left connor, it should show ON then the device can work. |
Question: | can this dimmer be used on 12 volt LED lamps |
Answer: | What I think was being asked is if this meter can tell you the PEAK load during the time it was connected. For example, let's say it was connected to a refrigerator for 10 hours. Let's say that during that 10 hours the load in Watts was 150Watts. But, when the compressor kicks in, it surges to 2000Watts for 3 seconds. Will this device allow you to see that 2000Watt PEAK later? Does it store that PEAK load into memory so you can view it? |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this dimmer stand 12 AR111 12Watts each |
Answer: | Dimmer will control 300 watt dimmable LEDs if the AR111s you have are dimmable 120V 12Watt lights then switch should be OK as 12 lights would be ~144 Watts |
Question: | We were trying to connect this switch, the light is on but the dimmer is not working, its a single pole, what am I missing |
Answer: | You need to be using "dimmable" bulbs, either incandescent or LED, but not fluorescent. If you are using dimmable incandescent or LED bulbs, I believe there is a slider control (switch) somewhere on this switch to choose either incandescent or LED. That needs to match your bulb type. |
Question: | I installed the switch as well as dimmable led bulbs. they work on the dim setting but they blink from half all the way to full power, any ideas |
Answer: | I've had similar issues and took it up with Leviton on their website. They initially just asked me to send it back to them, but I stopped short stating that I didn't particularly want to "finance" that. So they did send me a replacement unit and a prepaid shipping label. The replacement one is "better", but sometimes it still goes into flicker or as I call it "spazz" mode. They have asked me for the exact bulbs I'm using (Ecosmart Classic Glass Bulbs from Home Depot) but nothing further from them. I use those same bulbs in (2) other fixtures with Lutron LED dimmers (Model# TGCL-153PH-WH and Model# CTCL-153PR-WH) and they both have worked flawlessly for about a year. Never a single flicker. Bob |
Question: | Where is the locator light |
Answer: | Mine has a green LED at the top of the toggle switch. It is almost impossible to see in the light, but when the room is dark, it is visible without being disturbing. It comes defaulted to OFF. There are two micro switches on the front of the switch, which are hidden once that switch plate is put on. The top switch has an A and B position. A (the default) is for LED and incandescent lights. B is for CFC bulbs. A second switch, lower down, is for the locator light. Set the switch to ON if you want to use the light. Set these switches before you put on the switch plate because the plate covers these switches. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this considered triac based (forward phase control or leading edge) or 0-10v switch |
Answer: | The AYCL-153P is a triac based dimmer rated for 150W of compatible LED/CFL or 600W of incandescent/halogen lighting. For compatible LEDs with this dimmer, or another Lutron dimmer, please visit www.lutron.com/ledfinder or www.lutron.com/ledtool. |
Question: | do I need two of these switches in a 3-way application or can I use one dimmer with a normal 3-way on the other end |
Answer: | Lutron does not recommend two AYCL-153P-WH dimmers in 3-way application. The second location would need to be a standard 3-way mechanical switch. |
Question: | Can you fit three of these switches side by side in a standard 3 gang box |
Answer: | The switch generates heat so it has tabs on both sides to prevent you from mounting them side by side without being aware that you have to "derate" them if you want to install them side be side. In other words, you can put 600 watts of incandescent bulbs on one dimmer if you mount it alone but only 500 watts of incandescent on a dimmer with one side tab removed (you remove only the tab(s) that overlap) and only 400 watts load with both tabs removed (as you would do mounting 3 switches in a standard 3 gang box). They also include a chart for derating when you mix CFL/LED bulbs with incandescent. |
Question: | Anyone know the difference between the "Ariadni" switch (AYCL-153P) and the "Toggler" switch (TGCL-153P |
Answer: | I was wondering this exact same question, so I called Lutron and learned that they're the exact same switch. The model numbers differ because they're marketed/sold differently (e.g. Home Depot vs. other stores). So, if you find one cheaper than another, as I've done here on Amazon, buy the less expensive one! |
Question: | Where is it made? USA |
Answer: | HI,Customer, It is Made in China, UL listed |
Question: | Are there a 2, 3 snd 4 gang wall plates for these |
Answer: | Yes, these are standard size switches. Home Depot or Lowes should have multi-gang plates. |
Question: | installed but not turning on when the slide is in between and also hear some sound when you keep your ears on switch in dim mode . anyone else faced |
Answer: | No sounds from mine. Make sure your bulbs a dimmable type? Just a guess. |
Question: | can this dimmer be used on 12 volt LED lamps |
Answer: | I doubt it, but contact mfg., they are very responsive. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is anyone using this with an LED and if so, for how long and how is it working? Thanks |
Answer: | I'm using this with two 12.5W Soraa High-CRI "Vivid" series LED PAR30 4000K bulbs (total controlled load: 25W) and it is the finest dimmer switch I've ever used. With the "Advanced mode" custom programming (Technical document: www.lutron.com/TechnicalDocumentLibrary/048459.pdf) to adjust the "low trim" (dimmest point) I can get these bulbs to be on and stable at only |
Question: | Can this handle dimming LED lights all the way down so they are actually dim, like the incandescents? Yes, I have an LED light bulb that is dimmable |
Answer: | I have the Wafer 6 in. White Integrated LED Recessed Kit that Home Depot sells. They say they can go down to 10%.. I had another switch in previously that the lights wouldn't dim down as far and would turn off randomly when dimmed down all the way. If you use the adjustment feature in this switch it seems like they go down to that no problem. I've been running them for a day and no flickering or turning off. If anything changes I'll leave an updated comment or update this answer. Two factors you'll need to look at: 1) what is the LED bulb rated to go down to 2) Is this dimmer compatible? If your LED bulb says it can do it try many different dimmers until one works :) |
Question: | The max brightness seems lower than when I had a non-digital dimmer. How do I adjust? I see instructions for the lower dim range but not the max |
Answer: | Please see Lutron's Application Note #459. All of these settings are NOT listed in the manual that came with your switch. www.lutron.com/TechnicalDocumentLibrary/048459.pdf You want to adjust IL7, the high-end trim.IL1: Preset Light Level (last setting or set permanently)IL2: Fade ON Time (0.75 to 15.0 seconds)IL3: Fade OFF Time (0.75 to 15.0 seconds)IL4: Delayed Fade to OFF (time to leave the room - 10 to 70 seconds)IL5: Enable/Disable Indicator Lights (LED dots off or on)IL6: Low-End Trim (minimum brightness)IL7: High-End Trim (maximum brightness) |
Question: | how much power do led indicator lights draw |
Answer: | Approximately 0.02 Watts (2 cents per year at $0.10/kWh) if they did the job right of designing it (switching converter,) and 0.25 Watts (20 cents per year at $0.10/kWh) if they took the lazy way out (simple resistor.) |

Product description
Control the next generation of lighting with Lutron's dimmable LED+ dimmers! Screw-in dimmable compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and screw-in dimmable light emitting diode lamps (LEDs) are a great energy-saving alternative to incandescent or halogen light sources; however, dimming them may be difficult. Lutron's new line of LED+ dimmers provides a solution to alleviate your dimmable CFL and LED dimming challenges, while allowing you to adjust the light level to improve mood and ambiance. with the same features as the original slide dimmer by Lutron, this Skylark dimmable CFL/LED dimmer features an easy to use slide control that adjusts the light to suit any activity, and a convenient switch that returns light to your favorite level. These dimmers still provide full-range dimming for halogen and incandescent bulbs, ensuring today's dimmer is compatible with tomorrow's light sources. The dimmer can even dim a mixed load of light sources (i.e. LED and halogen or CFL and LED bulbson the same circuit). Claro wallplate is not included.

User questions & answers
Question: | How do I wire this with no ground |
Answer: | Note 4 of the installation instructions states: When no "grounding means" exist in wallbox, the 2011 NEC allows a control to be installed as a replacement if 1) a nonmetallic ,noncombustible faceplate is used with nonmetallic attachment screws or 2) the circuit is protected by a GFCI. When installing a control according to these methods, cap or remove green wire before screwing control into wallbox. |
Question: | So I have two can light led’s wired to a 2 toggle switch plate, can I remove the light receptacle and replace with this to dim the lights |
Answer: | As long as the LEDs you are using are compatible with this dimmer, then yes it will work properly for your application. For more information on compatible LED lamps, Lutron would reccomed checking out their LED tool at Lutron.com/ledfinder. |
Question: | Can i use 2 of these to dim from either location on a 3way (currently an old skylark and an on/off switch)? or do i need a maestro setup |
Answer: | On 3-way circuits, only one ELECTRO-MECHANICAL switch can be a dimmer regardless of lamp type, other switch must be standard single-pole 3-way on/off. You CAN use DIGITAL ELECTRONIC CONTROL SYSTEM (ie: MAESTRO) for all switches on circuit. Skylark SCL-153P dimmer is "electronic" but it is not a CONTROL SYSTEM that encompasses the whole circuit. |
Question: | Can this dim incandescent and LED bulbs on the same circuit |
Answer: | Yes- the issue is that the bulbs are very different and as a result will not dim uniformly so when dimmed one may be brighter |

User questions & answers
Question: | I plan on using this with a track lighting kit that uses dimmable leds. do i need anything (transformer?) between this switch and the track fixture |
Answer: | It would depend on the rack light system you use. If it uses 120v lamps then no. if it is a lower voltage lamp system it would have its own transformer as part of its installation and this dimmer is probably not what you need. You would then want a dimmer designed for low voltage applications. As far as I know though there is no hard and fast rule on this today as all the dimmers and transformers are electronic and may or may not be compatible with other electronic devices including the led drivers fjord the particular lamps in the track system you select. You should consult with the dealer you ate purchasing from and the installing electrician. If you ate doing it yourself you'll need do your research through the manufacturers of the equipment for comparability like the electrician would. |
Question: | What size bulb can be used with this dimmer? There seem to be all kinds of size bulbs available |
Answer: | That's right in the description: 150 watts LED / CFL, 600 watts incandescent. Just add the power requirements of all the bulbs controlled by the dimmer. For example, I'm using it to control 4 60 watt incandescent bulbs, total 240 watts. For LEDs / CFLs, use the actual power required, not the "equivalency". So a 23-watt CFL that says it's as bright as a 100 watt incandescent still only counts as 23 watts. |
Question: | difference in led and incandescent lighting dimmers |
Answer: | Some incandescent dimmers modify the output of the power in such a way that it either won't work at all or can damage the LED dimmer. LED dimmers I believe use finer PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) which will work with all dimming bulbs - incandescent, CFL, and LED bulbs. Using LED bulbs with a non-LED dimmer is a bad thing as is using LEDs that are not designed to be dimmed at all. The payback for the additional expense of the LED dimmer is pretty quick if it removes a large enough incandescent light bulb. |
Question: | Led dimmable bulb is flickering with this switch, is it bad |
Answer: | Problem: Flickering or FlashingPossible Cause #1: Incorrect VoltageLED downlights have a specified input voltage. Incorrect voltage to the driver can cause the LED to flicker or toflash on and off. * Check the input voltage of the driver (Ex: 120V) then check the voltage being delivered to the fixture (Ex: 277V). There may be a mismatch. If possible, replace the driver on the downlight for one with the correct input voltage to match the line voltage or, if that is not an option, install an applicable voltage transformer to the line voltage to achieve the required input voltage for the original fixture.Possible Cause #2: Incompatible DimmerIf the LED downlight was not designed for a particular dimming load or if the driver is not compatible with thedimming control then issues may occur. * Try bypassing the dimming circuit. If the LED functions normally then an incompatible dimmer or dimming load may be the issue or the driver is not a dimming driver. Consult factory to determine whether the driver is dimmable and, if so, what kind of dimmer is compatible with the driver. Please check this web link for a list of factory qualified compatible dimmers: http://www.liton.com/webcatalog/brochures/wp_dimmingfacts.pdfPossible Cause #3: Occupancy Sensor/Control Rated WattageThese controls sometimes have a minimum rated wattage in order to function correctly. For example, theremaybe a minimum of 20W required for the control unit but the LED might only consume 10W. * Add additional fixtures to the circuit to get to the required wattage for the dimming control or replace the dimming control unit with one that has a lower wattage requirement.remedyremedyremedycontinue...TROUBLESHOOTINGLED DOWNLIGHTSA DIVISION OF EEMA LIGHTING GROUP * 5461 WEST JEFFERSON BLVD., LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA * PH: 323.904.0200 (1 800 515 4880)FAX: 323.904.0201 (1 800 972 4880)Problem: Flickering or Flashing cont..Possible Cause #4: Dimmer OverloadA common problem with LED dimming is the inadvertent overloading of the LED driver. LED drivers are rated fora maximum load (measured in volts, amps and/or watts) that must not be exceeded. The number of lamps that can be installed on a single-phase control dimmer may seem to be an easy calculation. For example, suppose you want to know how many 15W LED fixtures can be installed on a 600W dimmer. Youmight divide the 600W by 15W and determine that you could control 40 fixtures. Unfortunately, that result mightbe wrong. In fact, you may only be able to use 6 LED fixtures on a dimmer rated for 600W.Even though the LED fixture may draw only 15W continuously, there may be a start-up in-rush current or arepetitive half cycle surge that makes the dimmer think that the current is much higher. That 15W LED fixturemay appear to the dimmer as a 100W incandescent load. If that happens and you are using more than 6 LEDfixtures, you will overload the dimmer. The average start-up or half-cycle stress that has been observed is the equivalent of a 100W incandescent lamp, even for LED loads of less than 20W! * For 10W & 15W Liton -DLV products, consult the charts in the LED Dimming Facts Guide to reference tested maximums by dimmer. * Remove the dimmer from the line to see if the problem is solved. * Change dimmer to one with a higher maximum load. * Split the circuit into multiple loads.Possible Cause #5: Dimmer UnderloadSome dimmers may not perform well if too little load is put on them. A minimum number of fixtures may berequired to operate correctly due to the 25W - 40W minimum load that most incandescent dimmers require tooperate correctly under all conditions. When using incandescent bulbs, the minimum load requirement waseasily met. However, with LED four or more loads may be required for a dimmer to reach the required minimumload. * For 10W & 15W Liton - DLV products, consult the charts in the LED Dimming Facts Guide to reference tested minimum by dimmer. * Remove the dimmer from the line to see if the problem is solved. * Change dimmer to one with a lower minimum load. |
