14 best ring vs nest

Ring and Nest are two popular brands known for their smart home security and automation products, including video doorbells, security cameras, and door chimes. Here's a comparison of Ring vs.Nest:

Ring:

  1. Video Doorbells: Ring offers a range of video doorbells, including battery-powered, wired, and video doorbells with built-in screens. These devices allow you to see and communicate with visitors at your door through a mobile app.

  2. Security Cameras: Ring also provides a variety of indoor and outdoor security cameras. These cameras are designed for different use cases, such as monitoring the front yard, backyard, or inside your home.

  3. Accessories: Ring offers accessories like the Ring Chime, which acts as a doorbell chime inside your home, and the Ring Alarm system, which is a DIY home security system with optional professional monitoring.

  4. Integration: Ring devices are often compatible with Amazon Alexa, allowing you to control them using voice commands. They can also integrate with other smart home platforms and devices.

  5. Cloud Storage: Ring provides optional cloud storage plans for video footage, allowing you to review and save recorded video clips. The basic plan typically covers one device.

Nest (formerly Nest by Google):

  1. Video Doorbells: Nest offers video doorbells with features like facial recognition and the ability to distinguish between people and objects. These doorbells integrate well with other Nest products.

  2. Security Cameras: Nest Cam Indoor and Nest Cam Outdoor are popular security camera options. They provide high-quality video and integration with the Nest ecosystem.

  3. Thermostats: Nest is well-known for its smart thermostats, such as the Nest Learning Thermostat. These devices can help you save energy and create a more comfortable home.

  4. Smart Home Ecosystem: Nest is part of the Google ecosystem, which means it integrates seamlessly with other Google smart home products and services.

  5. Cloud Storage: Nest offers cloud storage options for video footage, similar to Ring. You can subscribe to Nest Aware for various plans with different features, including 24/7 video recording.

Factors to Consider when Choosing Between Ring and Nest:

  1. Ecosystem: If you already have other smart home devices from Amazon (Alexa) or Google, you may want to choose the brand that integrates best with your existing ecosystem.

  2. Features: Consider the specific features offered by each brand's products. For example, Nest's facial recognition might be a key feature for some users, while Ring's range of doorbell options may be more appealing to others.

  3. Cost: Compare the upfront cost of devices as well as any subscription fees for cloud storage or additional features.

  4. Installation: Some users may find one brand's products easier to install than the other. Check user reviews and installation guides to get a sense of the process.

Ultimately, the choice between Ring and Nest will depend on your specific needs, preferences, and existing smart home setup. Both brands offer reliable and feature-rich smart home security solutions.

User questions & answers

Question: Can the unit be hung from the ceiling with corrected orientation
Answer: Can this unit be placed/hung facing outside the window?
Question: Is it possible to store captures locally to a NAS
Answer: You can store them to NAS not directly though. You need to purchase their plan either $3/month per camera or $10/month for unlimited cameras. If you have either plan you can download them from the cloud and store them on your NAS. I don’t know what Amazon Stockholder was talking about as it was stated that you can access, DOWNLOAD, and share past Ring videos. Also Amazon Stockholder would be completely incorrect with his reply.
Question: Does it require any sort of subscription
Answer: Can i just purchase Ring Indoor Cam and don't have subscription
Question: Can you download the app on a tablet or desktop? Must you only use a cellphone
Answer: Same discovery as Howard stated above. The current software in these cams, it doesn't not appear on my Windows 10 Ring app on my computer. It appears fine on my Android phone, but I pretty much do everything on my computer. I'm at work at home Cybersecurity engineer, so I like to see everything on my computer. I have 2 spotlight cams (over garage and one over the backyard) 2 of these indoor cams in my house (1st floor) and the Ring doorbell. I can see everything but the indoor cams that cover my 1st floor of the house. I have read via threads and forums though that the software is going to update this year sometime and they will eventually appear in the Windows 10 app on your computer systems, so that is a plus. The Ring devices check for updates themselves over your wifi network, so I'm assuming they will update themselves at one point and they will appear on my Windows 10 app one day soon. I'm hoping...it's one of the main reasons I got these. I want to be able to monitor and check on my three dogs on the first floor of the house, while I'm working in my office on the second floor.

User questions & answers

Question: can i watch on my tv
Answer: Depends on your TV or your setup. It will work with Alexa. You have to enable the Ring skill and link your Ring Account. Easiest to do on the web at alexa.amazon.com. Then you can use the Firestick or Fire TV. Then you can say 'Alexa, show my Floodlight Cam' or whatever you call it. Current Samsung TV's detect it too but you may have to go the the Samsung SmartThings hub to enable it.
Question: Every video/review I have read shows the camera pointed straight ahead. There doesn't appear to be much left/right adjustment. How much
Answer: Ours actually had a good amount. When it comes out the box, it is straight. But where we mounted it, we wanted it angled to the left. I would say that we had probably 30 degrees? Plus you are able to adjust the zone that it responds to.
Question: Can the flood light bulbs be changed out when they burn out
Answer: Simple answer is No or not easily. Ring will not fix or replace the bulb...Oh if you buy the extended warranty and they send you a whole new unit...What a waste!!! Or without the ExWar, you have to buy a new one to replace it so have to spend another $160 plus tax (they will give you a $100 discount to get a new one) for at max a $25-$30 bulb replacement! How is that for not being a part of the new Green Deal! This is a perfect example of customer NO-service in mind of the consumer SO BUYER BEWARE WHEN PURCHASING RING!!!! I guess I will try to jimmy-rig it like one of the consumers reported here to try but it outrageous and good bye to Ring, last one I purchase and I will tell any and all about this little (BIG) issue when purchasing an Ring product.
Question: Is there an option to save captured video to a private ftp server like what dlink allows? i won't buy if i have to subscribe to a service for that
Answer: The Ring Cloud storage Plan is available for $10/month and covers as many cameras that you have at your location it also includes professional security monitoring if you have the Ring Security System at no additional charge. Or you can choose the $3/month per camera plan if you want to save money when you have fewer than 3 cameras (which comes to

User questions & answers

Question: Is it possible to use this in 220VAC
Answer: Hi there, The All-new Ring Chime was intended to be used on a standard 110 to 240VA. Please reach us directly should you have any additional questions as our team is happy to assist. Regards, Ring Team [email protected]
Question: Does it play a different sound for each ring doorbell? The old chime would not. Does the new one
Answer: AFAIK you need to buy two in order to get a chime for each doorbell then link them separately to each ring. Then you have to change the tone for both doorbells to get a unique sound for each door.
Question: Does this chime work only when the button is pushed on the doorbell device
Answer: You can also set it up to make a chime when it detects motion. I usually have this setting turned off so it only chimes when someone pushes the button.
Question: How long does this new chime work? i have 2 chimes & a chime pro. only one works. the others flash & will not connect or just doesn't work at all
Answer: Mine also quit working after 2-2.5 years! Do these things come with a warranty? I would also like to know how long this one lasts. It's ridiculous if I have to buy one of these every 2.5 years! C'mon Ring, improve your chime quality!

Answer: They shortened the range with an update in Sept 2019. We are lucky to get more than 10 feet out of it, and by the time the Ring is activated and alerts us the person is already at the door. We are fighting for them to change back for removing an advertised feature or full refund.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this camera work with existing door bell chime
Answer: Hi, The Ring Video Doorbell Wired is a wired-only doorbell that has all the features Ring customers have come to know and love. Including 1080p HD video with night vision, two-way talk and Advanced Motion Detection, all easily controlled within the Ring app. This doorbell can be powered by either an existing doorbell system, the Ring plug-in adapter, or a transformer for power supply (10-24 VAC, 40VA max, 50/60Hz, or 24VDC, 0.5A, 12W). It's important to note, halogen or garden-lighting transformers are not compatible. The doorbell requires you to bypass the existing doorbell chime in your home. This means that after installation, your home doorbell system will not sound when the device’s button is pressed. If you wish to hear audio alerts in your home, you can pair your Video Doorbell Wired with a Ring Chime or compatible Alexa device. If you have any additional questions please email us at [email protected]. Sincerely, Danielle from Ring [email protected]
Question: Can you aim the camera in specific direction
Answer: Hi, Great question! The Ring Video Doorbell Wired offers a 155° horizontal field of view and a 90° vertical field of view. It is a wired-only doorbell and connects to your home's existing doorbell wiring, therefore the location of the existing wiring will determine how you can mount the doorbell. The Ring Wedge Kit and Corner Kit will be available for purchase. These kits when installed can help angle your Ring Video Doorbell in your desired direction. If you have any additional questions please reach out to our team at [email protected]. Thank you, Danielle from Ring
Question: Does not work with existing doorbell chime when wired!!?? That’s not a good thing
Answer: Pretty silly that Ring designed this to replace wired doorbells but it doesn't sound the current chime that people already have. I would venture to guess most people enjoy the sound of their current chime vs an electronic sound. The Nest doorbell has had this feature since launch. Bad design choice and feels like this was done to upsell the Ring Chime at the expense of what's beneficial to the consumer. The Video Doorbell 3 uses the existing chime, but it's bulkier and unattractive - would have been nice to use this smaller version.
Question: Do you have to reset if there's a power cut
Answer: Hey, If you should experience a power outage or a wifi issue the doorbell will stop working. However, once the power is restored the Ring Video Doorbell Wired should automatically reconnect to your network. If by chance the doorbell is not able to automatically reconnect you can manually reconnect it via the Device Health tile within the Ring application. If you have any additional questions please reach out to us at [email protected]. Thank you, Danielle from Ring [email protected]

User questions & answers

Question: Can you have 2 ring doorbells on a home? will they operate independently
Answer: Yes as long as you name them different should work fine
Question: can you hook the feed to a hard drive
Answer: I don't believe there is a continuous "feed." The device is activated by motion and/or pushing the button, then recordings are made. If it helps, the videos can be shared with several options. I share it to myself by email then I capture it with software I have for capturing videos on my desktop. Then I save my videos to an external hard drive for backup.
Question: The echo show5 has no built-in battery? Seems that I need to buy a ggmm es5 battery base to move my echo show around
Answer: Why are you asking about the Echo Show on a Ring Doorbell 3 product listing? Also, no Echo device has ever been battery powered, seems strange you wouldn't know that. Many third party manufacturers make external battery packs for them, but the reliability of them is questionable.
Question: What is Pre-Roll on the
Answer: Hello, The Pre-Roll feature is available on the Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus. This feature allows you to see an additional four seconds of video before the motion event was even triggered. This is a first-to-market feature for battery-powered doorbells and unique exclusively to Ring. Pre-Roll video is in black and white and in low resolution to conserve battery life. User questions & answers

Question: Are you able to turn off the spotlight and just use the infrared
Answer: Yes
Question: Can the cable pass through the top of the window? I have a nest like that now as the power cable is flat
Answer: The 20' long cable is round, about the thickness of a standard ball point pen (about 7/16 inch or 1 cm), and the plug at the end is just as one would get on a power tool or heavy duty extension cord. If you were to open your window, pass the plug and cord through, then try to close the window down on the cord, there would be a definite GAP where air/rain would come through. I would NOT recommend this. If possible, you may consider running the cord up your exterior wall to your roof soffit, and power it through your attic. You can use an extension cord on it as well, just make sure it's not accessible to anyone who would want to disable your cameras. I have learned that the RING app does NOT inform you if power has been lost the camera, so the burglar could just unplug it, rob you, and you'd not know until you checked the camera feed or came home.... If you're plugging it into an exterior outlet within reach of bag guys, consider replacing the outlet cover with a locking one so they can't unplug it.
Question: will ggmm es5 battery base help if I want to use my show5 when unplugged
Answer: of course, that is exactly why I bought it
Question: How long do the batteries last
Answer: I installed mine May 26th above the garage of our new house. Checking live view a couple times a day and having the motion on 24/7, the battery died on June 15th. Three full weeks with heavy use. I just recharged the battery plus added a second one. I’ll give an update on how long these last.

User questions & answers

Question: How does it fasten to the front of the house? It is expensive, so can someone easily rip it off
Answer: Hi Neighbor, Ring doorbells are screwed into a mounting bracket and anchored to the wall so it can’t be easily removed. If it does get stolen, the doorbell will capture a video of the incident, which you can use to file a police report and we will replace it for you free of charge. If you have any additional questions, please reach out to me directly at [email protected] today! ' Thank you, Mary Nell J., Neighbor Satisfaction Specialist [email protected]
Question: Can the quick release battery be taken out by someone who wants to rob the house
Answer: I have it, and it's fast for detection so I have no worries for the average person (90%) who is going to rob you they WILL be seen and recorded...but a "smart" robber will have a 25 dollar wifi jammer to disrupt your network and your neighbors to get past it..but then you pair it with the ring alarm and as long as the cell signal is not jammed an alert should go off. I had a relo link camera, budget and with an SD card but it ate batteries and sometimes not record every event. This is a great device if you want easy and convince...but the best devices are expensive and wired only with a battery backup.
Question: is It weather or waterproof
Answer: I found out that yes, it most definitely is weather and waterproof, but in not so smart of away. I had my ring video doorbell 2 in its place by the door when hurricane Irma came through last year, and forgot that the doorbell was there until about 4 hours into the worst of the northeastern bands with the steady high winds and hang reason blowing sideways... which were blowing to the east - right at the front of our house. So at the point where I realized the doorbell was still outside, our power and internet were out but the battery was still powering the doorbell and I was worried about the internal electronics, but I took it inside, too out the battery, and put it on the counter and forgot about it for a few days until things started to settle down, and then the power finally came back on. so at that point, it was the Moment of Truth when I went and put the doorbell back in its place and when it reestablished its connection with the internet, every aspect of the doorbell worked just fine. It's been a year now since Hurricane Irma passed through Florida, and all the functions of the doorbell are still working just fine: the battery longevity, the speakers, the microphone, the infrared lights, and the camera lens are all fine. One other important thing to mention: our front door faces west and is right near the corner of the wall to the garage, which faces south. So, it goes without saying that it can handle the worst of Florida's relentless sun and humidity through the summer like a champ!!
Question: I'm surprised that no-one has asked the question I'm about to ask.... Do you have to "Subscribe" to their service in order for it to continue working
Answer: I'm surprised no one has asked about the apparent need for a home WiFi subscription being required along with the $100/year subscription needed for the doorbell itself. And what if you have a front AND backdoor?? Do you pay for WiFi and EACH doorbell every month? And how secure is the mounting? What's to prevent people from just walking up and stealing the $200 doorbell itself, along with any packages they may find on the stoop?

User questions & answers

Question: Will this be using the same batteries as the older models
Answer: Hello, Great question! Yes, the all new Ring Stick Up Cam uses the same Ring branded lithium battery as our other home security cameras and doorbells. If you have any additional questions, please visit us at ring.com/help or by emailing us at [email protected]. Thank you, Ring Team
Question: How long does the battery last with one charge
Answer: Have 5 placed outside, 3 most active get 15-25 Alerts a day. Other 2, only 3-5 a day. After 4 months 58-82% shown on battery life of 5 camera. Thought battery would discharge faster from some reviews, so got couple spares. Now just waiting to see when get below 30%, then will switch out.
Question: Why can I not setup motion zones for alerts? (can do this with the newest indoor model) Only get a pie shaped "range." Will this problem be fixed
Answer: I have inquired about the same issues. You can do a pie, and then exclude any of the 3 zones of the pie, but apparently, they took away the most useful functionality of their entire system. The new camera only allows the arc to go 1/2 of the view range making the usefulness limited at best. Support has reached out to try to “help” but in lieu of a software or hardware change, I’m not sure what can be done to rectify the situation short of getting a Gen 2 camera with the better controls.
Question: If you use the camera indoors, is there a way to turn off the camera while you are home
Answer: Two things: 1) If you plan on ONLY using it indoors, then go with the NEW cheaper $60 Ring camera. It is intended for indoor use only AND still uses the old motions zones instead of the motion arch. Plus it offers all the same benefits as this camera (except it is indoor use only). 2) I too had a similar question when I purchased the new Ring Indoor camera for $60. My solution was to purchase an Amazon Smart Plug. Then, in the Alexa app I an event to at a specific time to turn the smart plug on and a second event to turn it off. I don't need the camera on when I'm home and I wanted a way to automate the process. It works great. https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Smart-Plug-works-Alexa/dp/B01MZEEFNX/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=amazon+smart+plug&qid=1573875922&sr=8-1

User questions & answers

Question: The unit states on the device to mount in a metal box only. My current device was in standard wall plastic junction box behind door chime. Work
Answer: Yes it will. The requirement for a metal box is because the unit throws off a little heat and could, under certain rare circumstances, melt the box. Your doorbell or chimes is highly unlikely to pull enough power to heat the unit enough to do that. Why not install the unit, inspect it after an hour, 4 hours, 12 hours, 24 hours and a week. I’m sure you’ll find no indicia of heat damage. If you’re really concerned, replace the box.
Question: There are 2 points, labeled "R" and "C", on the transformer where you attach wires with screws. What do "R" and "C" stand for? "Remote" and "Chime
Answer: Two terminals R and C, they can connect any cable, beacuse this is AC power.
Question: I have a nest hello, and i have had a problem with power. this product was suggested to me, but, what chime could i use
Answer: You should be able to use it with any chime that requires 24V power.
Question: I have bought this transformer, it says it is 24v. i am reading 30v at the doorbell button. anybody know if it will cause a problem with a ring pro
Answer: 24 vac transformers normally put out 28 - 30 volts. Any doorbell transformer that I have ever replaced is a 15 volt output transformer.

User questions & answers

Question: Will the chime pro extend the WiFi range to my ring alarm base? Currently it is just barely in range and disconnects throughout the day
Answer: Yes!
Question: How do i disable night light
Answer: But the light does NOT “automatically” come on. You either set it on or off. Fairly significant misrepresentation by Ring.
Question: Can i use more than one chime pro in my ring network
Answer: Hi there, Yes, you can use multiple Chime Pro devices to expand your Ring of security. The set up process will be the same for each device and will be completed through the Ring app. We can help ensure everything is working as intended if you need us. Please reach us at [email protected] at your convenience. Regards, Ring Team
Question: Will the extended wi-fi be available for other (non-ring) devices? or am i better off just getting a wi-fi extender
Answer: No it only works for other ring devices. I’m not pleased about that when the device name says Wi-Fi extender. Just found out the hard way I need to buy another device for Netflix to play in the bedroom.

Question: Why didn't they just add this functionality to the Ring security system? Did Ring add this "bridge" to get an additional
Answer: The Ring security system was fully developed and in production long before they were in the smart lighting business. The Bridge was developed as a way to incorporate smart lighting into the existing Ring security systems. The addition of the bridge was not a way to get more money, but rather a way to incorporate new functionality into existing equipment.
