It can go straight down so that the cord can come out the bottom of a lamp (hole already there) or it can come out the side when you don't have a lamp base with a hole in it. You would need a way to attach it to the lid of a mason jar...I wouldn't know how to go about doing that. It does have a support rod that attaches to the bottom of the socket, so that could go into the lid if you drilled a hole.
