14 best power usage meter homes
Power usage meters for homes, also known as electricity meters or electrical meters, are devices used to measure the amount of electrical energy consumed by a residential property. These meters are essential for billing purposes, tracking energy usage, and ensuring the safe and efficient distribution of electricity within a home. Here's what you need to know about power usage meters for homes:
Meter Sockets:
- Meter sockets are the enclosures that house the electricity meter. They are typically located on the exterior of the home or in an easily accessible location. The meter is connected to the meter socket, allowing it to measure the incoming electrical supply.
Types of Meters:
- There are several types of electricity meters, including analog electromechanical meters, digital meters, and smart meters.
- Analog meters have rotating discs or dials that physically move as electricity is consumed. Utility companies read these meters manually.
- Digital meters display consumption data on an electronic screen and are often read remotely by utility companies.
- Smart meters are advanced digital meters that provide real-time data on energy consumption and can communicate with utility companies automatically. They offer more detailed information and can help homeowners monitor their energy usage more effectively.
Meter Accuracy:
- Electricity meters are designed to be highly accurate in measuring electrical consumption. They undergo regular calibration and testing to ensure their precision.
Installation and Maintenance:
- Meter installation and maintenance are typically the responsibility of the utility company. Homeowners should not attempt to tamper with or repair the meter themselves, as it can be dangerous and may lead to inaccuracies in billing.
Breakers, Load Centers, and Fuses:
- Breakers, load centers (also known as electrical panels), and fuses are essential components of a home's electrical system but are separate from the electricity meter.
- Breakers and fuses protect the electrical circuits within a home from overloads and short circuits. When an electrical fault occurs, they interrupt the circuit to prevent damage to wiring and appliances.
- Load centers house the breakers or fuses, allowing homeowners to control and distribute electrical power throughout their homes.
Energy Efficiency and Monitoring:
- Some modern electrical meters, especially smart meters, provide homeowners with tools to monitor their energy usage and make more informed decisions to increase energy efficiency.
- This information can help homeowners identify areas where they can reduce energy consumption and save on their electricity bills.
Billing and Tariffs:
- The data collected by the electricity meter is used by utility companies to calculate billing based on the amount of energy consumed. Utility companies often have different tariff structures, such as time-of-use pricing, which can affect the cost of electricity.
In summary, power usage meters for homes are vital devices that measure electricity consumption, allowing utility companies to bill homeowners accurately. The type of meter used may vary, with modern smart meters offering enhanced features for energy monitoring and efficiency. Maintenance and installation should always be handled by professionals, and homeowners can benefit from monitoring their energy usage to make informed decisions about reducing consumption and costs.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use it on a gas dryer that takes 30 Amps for a split second to start? I know it runs below 8 amps once started |
Answer: | Its a crap shoot as to whether this meter can handle the surge current of start up. Maybe itll work once, twice, a few times. But eventually it WILL fail. Id recommend one of those add in power monitor displays with a split core transformer that is clamped around the input hot line to sense current. For example, a CrocSee CRS-022B. Much, much safer. And can sense up to 100A! |
Question: | can be used connecting 220 Volts at 60 Hz |
Answer: | Yes, this item is designed for 110-220v, 50-60hz, AC power. |
Question: | Can you plug space heaters into it safely |
Answer: | It depends, the max. wattage rating of the PN2000 is 1760w @110v or 2000w @125v (16 amps). As long as your space heater rating is lower than this, it should work. Most space heaters have a max. output of 1500W, so you should be good to go. Note: Due to the large start-up amps of space heater, though device has abilities to deal with it, we still recommend not to use the device near the max rated specs (in most cases, the true RMS Current will be around 15A) for a long time to avoid any unexpected damage or accident. And please kindly know that the inner and outer device material is fireproofing. If device is over used or exposure to excessive heat, it may cause a melt incident but it won't start a fire. Still, you need use this device carefully to avoid any fire hazard. |
Question: | Does it tell you how much electricity has been used in 24 hours and the cost of usage |
Answer: | Yes, it will give a total usage over any time period (loose power circuits will be fine, consumption kWh will be kept in memory). So you just need to let it run 24 hours and check the Electricity Consumption (EC). Regarding the cost of usage, you have to do the math. Here gives you an example: Let's say your billed KWH is 0.07 and the distribution charge is 0.04. Then the KWH charge $0.07 + distribution charge $0.04 = $0.11 per Kilowatt Hour(kWh) usage. So if your device is using total 2.4 kW-hrs(EC) per 24 hours (which is equal to 100 watts in one hour), then you are paying $0.11 per kWh * 2.4 kilowatts per day = $0.264 for each day of use. Hope this explains it better. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Where can I download the user manual? The link on your product page is not working |
Answer: | Mine came with a user manual such as it was. Take a few minutes and look on YouTube;it will be explanatory quickly! Good luck! |
Question: | Will this meter read the wattage im putting back into the grid |
Answer: | No. |
Question: | How do you reset the usage? I don't need to reset the cost Kw/h, just the running totals |
Answer: | Hello, this usage will be reset all, and then you could set the cost again, if you have any problem when reset, please tell us the details, you could send the email to [email protected], we will be surely responsible to this problem. thanks |
Question: | Does it for remote by a computer or cell phone?will it work with 220v |
Answer: | Negative. Most of these devices are rated up to 1875 watts. That's 125 volts times 15 amps. If your electrical service panel is up to code, the 15 amp breakers in it should flip off at 1440 watts. That's 80% of 1800 watts (120 volts times 15 amps). I have one window unit wired for 20 amps...that's 1920 watts safely. I have used these devices with my 20 amp outlets and but please don't make a habit of using it continuously, it will get hot and potentially start a fire. There are 220V meters out there but I'm not familiar with any of them. Take care! |
Question: | Is this model 220v (Non US) AC compatible? If not, which model is? Thanks in advance |
Answer: | This is a 120-volt meter. I recommend that if you want a plugin meter than can handle 240 volts you look one for the appropriate electrical receptacle on the front. This one clearly has a standard 120-vold outlet receptacle. |
Question: | does this work on 220v 60hz house outlet |
Answer: | According to product specifications Line Frequency range is 47.0 - 63 HZ. If your outlet is configured to accept the P4460 you should be able to use it. Before you buy you may want to ask the manufacturer this question. |
Question: | Can it be set for a period of time (such as 24 hours) and record usage only then |
Answer: | Yes, this records the total power used by the device whether it is on or off or any mix. You just need to go to the screen kwh used. record the beginning # and at the end of time period (say 24 hours) record the end #. that is how many kwh it used. I used several of these for months to record the A/C use in our shared apt and paid the landlord for the a/c used so they don't complain about my electricity used. great device. now however, my apt has a 20a a/c wall unit. while you could get converter to regular 3 prong, not sure if this unit will go to 20 amps.Others who said no are simply ignorant of this devices menu. It ALSo shows, when on watts menu, the watts used when a device is running, or is off. so you can see how much your a/c or toaster oven or giant screen tv uses when on, or off.It also keeps the power kilowatt hours used even if unplugged or power goes out in its internal memory. so you can simply record the kilowatt hours at the begin of a month, then at the end of the month, subtract and multiply by your cost of electricity for the total $ / month the device uses. The dork who was our landlord at the time thought his electric water heater for tea was less expensive to use than nuking a cup of water for a minute to heat it up in the microwave. popped this device on it and they were almost identical in total power used to heat a cup of water. The same idiot who was complaining about this left his rear projection tv on when he wasn't around, and they use alot more electricity than today's flat panel screens. If you want to record the power usage of some device over time, you'll want to plug this device into a short extension cord. if you plug it directly into the wall then you have to lie down on the floor to read the kilowatt readings. I just put the readings into a spreadsheet when I was recording monthly electricity usage. |
Question: | To how many decimal places does this one display for Watts |
Answer: | This EZ model does NOT display how many Watts you device is pulling... It displays how may kwh have been used thus far, to the 1/10th decimal place. So, when you first plug something in is shows ZERO, since not enough time has passed to show kwh used yet. This is a HUGE feature left off this device. For me, I want to plug something in to a meter like this and be able to instantly see how many Watts the device uses, and this EZ meter version does not do that. |

The U.S Department of Energy reports that 20% of our electric bills come from items that are left plugged in when they are not in use, or items that are in standby mode. With the Kill A Watt P4400 we can monitor the energy eaters in our homes and cut down our electric bills at the same time. Plug whatever item you want into the device and it will tell you the efficiency of that item by displaying the kilowatt per hour. This device will help you determine which items are costing you the most to run. The Kill A Watt also calculates voltage, line frequency, current, and power factor. You can calculate your electric bill before you even receive it from the electric company.Test The Quality of Your Home's Power
But measuring appliance consumption is just the tip of the iceberg. Because it can monitor voltage (Volt) and line frequency it can also test if an outlet is working, or evaluate the quality of the electrical power provided by your utility company. It can detect voltage drops around the house, help to predict brownout conditions or to make sure a new home's outlets are in working condition before escrow closes.

User questions & answers
Question: | Hi, is this unit able to capture peak current draw? I want to see if my audio amplifier ever gets close to tripping my breaker |
Answer: | This will only plug into a 120 VAC outlet. The standard 120 VAC outlet in almost all homes is only rated 15A continuous duty, but can take more for a second like when a room air conditioner compressor starts up. This is probably following those same rules. If the wiring is 12 gauge or thicker, it can be hooked to a 20 amp breaker even though all of the outlets in the average house are rated 15A, at least in most states. The reality of the matter is that wiring and outlets can always take somewhat more than the ratings and everything is oversized for safety. But is is always considered unsafe to plug in any device that uses more than 15 amps into a typical house outlet. An exception is commercial outlets that fit both home devices and heavier duty commercial device plugs and those outlets are usually rated at 20 amp. Those outlets are more common in businesses and uncommon in homes. An air conditioner or commercial refrigerator that uses more than about 10 continuous amps will normally be a 240 volt appliance and require different type of outlet designed for 240 volts, same is true of typical electric clothes dryer and this device would not adapt to those. |
Question: | Will this work with two prong (non-grounded) outlets |
Answer: | This device, the P4400, will reset all of its timed measurement values to zero if power is lost or the device is unplugged. The P4460 has "non volatile" memory, using a battery to provide the necessary voltage to power the (S)RAM memory, which means that it will not lose the data if power to the 4460 is lost. The P4460 also will let you input the cost per KWH from your provider to calculate the cost to operate the appliance over a week, month and year (assuming that your use is the same during the extrapolated period as it was during the measurement period). For me the data retention feature is well worth the extra $4 since I want to keep track of the energy used by a window air conditioner which will vary by the outdoor temperature, the sun hitting the building, the humidity, etc. |
Question: | most of my outlets are 20 amps or more, the killawatt is only 15 amps does that make a difference in calculations, the garage is 40 amp |
Answer: | Hello, the correct wire is typically referred to as 10/3 with ground, but yes 10/4 would be the correct amount of wires. Reliance Controls videos have the 10/3 with ground used in install videos. Any other video done by others may not have the correct wire. |
Question: | what is the difference between the p4400 and the p |
Answer: | Hello and thanks for your question! The PB30 inlet box is just a plug for a generator cord in an outdoor rated enclosure. It is used to connect a generator cord and then bring the wiring into a building to connect to what should be a transfer switch or device. The wiring from the PB30 brought inside doesn’t have to connect to a transfer switch for the power to be utilized, but every state law requires a transfer device to connect generator power to. Hope this helps! |

Question: | Is this model 220v (Non US) AC compatible? If not, which model is? Thanks in advance |
Answer: | At the moment, we don't have an API or developer program. That being said, we see integrations are an important part of the future of Sense and will continue to look into additional ways to connect with other devices. In the meantime, check out our IFTT integration! |
Question: | does this work on 220v 60hz house outlet |
Answer: | Unfortunately, Sense does not have an option for an ethernet port, our monitors must have a consistent WiFi connection. |
Question: | Can it be set for a period of time (such as 24 hours) and record usage only then |
Answer: | Using IFTT, you can log device turning on (or off) in a Google spreadsheet; see https://ifttt.com/sense_energy_monitor --- that said, if Google goes belly up and closes, same cloud-based service problem exists. |
Question: | To how many decimal places does this one display for Watts |
Answer: | For those of you familiar with Python or Docker, the open-source Vuegraf project allows you to pull all metrics from the vue service and store them into your own InfluxDB and build graphs in Grafana. You can set alarms to trigger when certain thresholds are breached. Search the Internet for vuegraf and it should be the first result. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be set up to use and view on a desktop computer or does a person have to have a cellphone |
Answer: | You need to add some info about your spa before you can get an absolute answer. But according to the rating tag on this unit it can handle 15 amps input and 15 amps output. That means it can handle a load of 15 amps at 120 VAC. If your spa is over 15 amps, the answer is no. 15 amps at 120 VAC = 1800 watts. If you spa is at or above 15 amps, or 1800 watts, don't us it on the spa. To be safe and 100% accurate, refer to the spa user manual. |
Question: | Does this work with a 240 line |
Answer: | It's not made for plugging into the grid in the manner you describe. Its design is intended to measure consumption of individual appliances up the monitor's maximum current/power rating. I have used such a device on a power strip to measure multiple appliances at once, but kept total draw of loads within the monitor's limits. |
Question: | Any monthly app fees |
Answer: | Don't need a pen pushing where it says reset |
Question: | Is there a subscription needed |
Answer: | I recommend that you call the company to confirm your question. |

Turning Power Into Knowledge
Emporia has developed the next generation of the Vue Energy Monitor. Committed to bringing the best value as affordable possible, the Vue provides everything you need to monitor your entire home's energy usage in real time. See how much electricity your home is using anywhere, anytime.
Monitor Individual Circuits without the Guesswork
Add individual 50A sensors to your Vue to monitor up to 16 individual circuits — providing accurate energy use for the appliances and equipment that is important to you. No guesswork. No trying to discern energy signals from background noise. Just simple, easy, and accurate insight into your home. 50A sensors are sold separately and also sold in bundles with the Vue.
Measure Solar Net Metering without Extra Hardware
Solar net metering is built right into the Emporia Vue. The simple Emporia iOS and Android app will show when and how much electricity you are consuming and when and how much excess energy you are producing back to the grid — giving you keen insight into the impact of your solar panels as they relate to your energy use.
Installs in the Electrical Circuit Panel of your Home
The Gen 2 Vue installs in your home's electrical panel using CT sensor clamps that go around your mains and the other circuits you wish to monitor. DIY instructions included, but a professional electrician is recommended. The Vue system is designed for field installation in a switch enclosure as per 312.8(B) of the 2017 NEC regarding Power Monitoring Equipment.
Do You have Metal Bus Bar Mains in Your Panel?
Our Flexible Current Sensor solution is now available on the EmporiaEnergy website. These current sensors are meant to replace the 200A main sensors that ship with Gen 2 Vues. They employ a bendable Rogowski coil with a 1.4” (36mm) opening that can fit around most bus bars or into tight spaces where a standard current sensors clamp cannot fit. Installing the Flexible Current Sensors is still dangerous, and Emporia highly recommends that installation be performed by a licensed electrician or other qualified professional.
Add Emporia Smart Plugs to Your Vue
Emporia Smart Plugs (sold separately) can be added to your Vue system to help you to not only monitor the energy of lighting and small appliances, but to also set timers, schedules, and turn them on and off from anywhere, any time with the Emporia app.

User questions & answers
Question: | does it mearsure watts |
Answer: | Time/Watts/Cost Time/Volts/Cost Time/Current/Power Plus two more modes |
Question: | How do I install batteries and what size battery |
Answer: | No visible battery door, hatch. Since it plugs into power when in use, if there is a battery, it's charging when being used. |
Question: | Is this rated for 15a/1800w continuous? in other words, what happens if you connect it to an ev charger, which will draw 15a all the time |
Answer: | Yes, rated15A continuous. Only draws about 1 watt (0.008 amps) by itself. Basically, it will draw what the EV charger draws. If you get one, you will see that the EV charger draws max load early, then power draw dwindles as the car gets closer to full charge. It will not draw 15A continuously. You will also be able to measure the watt-hour capacity of your electric vehicle's battery storage. Plus it makes you cool without smoking cigarettes. Very cool. |
Question: | Having an issue with 2 outlets in my house and I need to track the power at them. When they lose power and when it came back.Do these keep history |
Answer: | I dont think these are what your looking for. They do a great job tracking power used, but there isn't a function for testing outlets. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How can i ask for a zw095 to support eu frequencies and 230v? does this product support it or how can i order one |
Question: | If installed inside the breaker panel, how is it possible for the device's Zwave RF signals to pass though the panel's solid metal construction |
Question: | Does this need a memory card to store data? Can you monitor data over a period of months or just real time |
Answer: | Thanks for your question. It is about 19cm long. Hope it can help you. |
Question: | What is the difference between Gen 2 and Gen |
Answer: | Very minimal. Uses a very small gauge signal wire, hardwired into line voltage. Advise contacting the vendor for a complete spec sheet. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will it loose count when power is lost |
Answer: | Mine seems to be accurate. Remember to first plug the meter into the outlet, WITHOUT anything plugged into the meter, and then RESET the meter, BEFORE plugging anything into it. Otherwise, per my review, random data may exist when the meter is plugged in. |
Question: | quiero medir la energia de salida en ac de un inversor funciona |
Answer: | For those of you familiar with Python or Docker, the open-source Vuegraf project allows you to pull all metrics from the vue service and store them into your own InfluxDB and build graphs in Grafana. You can set alarms to trigger when certain thresholds are breached. Search the Internet for vuegraf and it should be the first result. |
Question: | Will the meter run backward for solar panels |
Answer: | Yes. Assuming you meant a 240 VOLT load, there are settings that allow you to only need one clamp but the app will then double the readings appropriately. |
Question: | Can this be used for 4500 Watt - dual element electric water heater? I am concerned about the wattage/ rating of this meter. Thanks |
Answer: | There are no monthly fees. Works great. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can the app on my wife ios phone and my android phone be simultaneously logged in to the app |
Answer: | Yes it will that is what I use mine for. It gives me an AC reading right between the Grid Ready inverter and the power grid. |
Question: | Does the app function when outside the home? Ie. Will I be able to see real-time data for my home while away at work |
Answer: | The P4400-vp can be shipped on international orders. Great Britain and France, even the Island of St. Martin Dutch side (120VAC) and St. Maartin French side (240VAC). have significantly different power from the US. The French and Great Britain use power 240VAC "Phase/ or live leg to ground" instead of the US "live leg to live leg" for 240VAC. Even though this unit is not usable for 240volt it is cleared for international use since the unit tests on phase to ground 120VAC and this is what we use in the US. It would appear that this has to do with the way the ground (round plug) and neutral are utilized in the device. |
Question: | does it sum up power usage for a period of time, like every month |
Answer: | What I understand of resolution on this context is: the increment steps of the measure. A 10 resolution will measure either 0, 10, 20, 30 .... but never a number in between. |
Question: | Is it truly worth 300 bucks |
Answer: | Not really. If you are sure which range is best you should start high and work your way down until you get the accuracy you need. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it read the current amps being used |
Answer: | No, I had mine on and off,and it kept the count. |
Question: | Can I plug it into a 20 amp outlet |
Single phase 2 wires Energy anylizer with Modbus RTU Amazon.com/dp/B07D49N8FH 2) Smart Energy Meter 1 2 or 3 Phase 120V/480V. Modbus. Amazon.com/dp/B07V8LBLLJ |
Question: | How does this calculate cost? I need enter the current rate of my utility provider |
Answer: | I don't think this meter reads backwards. I would try this one for one phase: https://www.amazon.com/Smart-Single-Energy-anylizer-Modbus/dp/B07D49N8FH/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1548534471&sr=8-2&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=120v+smart+meter+beyondtech&dpPl=1&dpID=41OYtQPoISL&ref=plSrch |
Question: | Is there a limit to the environment used? For example, where the temperature is relatively high |
Answer: | Yes, up to 100 Amps, so even if the water heater is 120V then 120 x 100 = 12000 Watts Max. Most likely your heater is for 240V then the max watts in that case would be 240 x 100 = 24000 Watt. So in either case the Amps will be within the meter's range of 100 Amps. In other words, what matters for the meter is the Amps. They have to be less than 100 Amps. In you case 4500÷120=37.5 Amps. Or most likely 4500÷240=18.75 Amps. Even better. |
