14 best attic stairs installations
Attic stairs installation involves adding a convenient and safe access point to your attic space. This allows you to easily access the attic for storage, maintenance, or inspection purposes. Here are some key points related to attic stairs installations:
Purpose: Attic stairs provide a safe and easy way to access the attic space in your home. This is important for homeowners who want to use their attic for storage, maintenance of HVAC equipment, or other purposes.
Types: There are different types of attic stairs available, including fold-down stairs, telescoping stairs, and scissor-style stairs. The choice of attic stairs depends on factors like available space, ceiling height, and personal preferences.
Installation Location: The first step in installing attic stairs is determining the optimal location for them. This usually involves cutting an opening in the ceiling on the uppermost floor of your home. The location should be chosen to provide convenient access while minimizing disruption to living spaces.
Installation Process: The installation process typically involves the following steps:
- Cutting an opening in the ceiling to create the access point.
- Attaching the attic stair unit securely to the framing of the opening.
- Ensuring the stairs are level and stable.
- Adding weatherstripping and insulation around the opening to prevent drafts and maintain energy efficiency.
- Installing a cover or door at the attic entrance to seal it when not in use.
Materials: Attic stairs are commonly made of materials like wood, aluminum, or steel. The choice of material can affect the durability and weight capacity of the stairs.
Safety Features: Attic stairs should be equipped with safety features such as handrails, non-slip treads, and a locking mechanism to secure the stairs in place when not in use. These features help prevent accidents and ensure safe usage.
Weight Capacity: Attic stairs have weight capacity ratings that indicate the maximum load they can safely support. It's important to choose a stair system that can handle the anticipated weight of users and any items they plan to transport into the attic.
Insulation and Weatherproofing: Proper insulation around the attic access is crucial to prevent heat loss and drafts. Many attic stairs come with insulated doors or covers to improve energy efficiency and reduce heating and cooling costs. Weatherproofing is also important to maintain the integrity of the building envelope.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance is essential to ensure that attic stairs remain safe and functional. This may include lubricating hinges and locks, inspecting for signs of wear or damage, and addressing any issues promptly.
In summary, attic stairs installation is a practical home improvement project that provides easy access to attic spaces for various purposes. Proper installation, insulation, and weatherproofing are important considerations to ensure energy efficiency and prevent drafts. Safety features and maintenance play a crucial role in keeping these stairs safe for use.

Answer: | It is 12" WIDE BY 1 1/2" DEEP |
Question: | My studs are @22.5" on center, is this too small for the ladder? Or does the frame meant as 22.5" on center, rather than 24" (I think) on center |
Answer: | sorry ... sounds like a safety standard I'm not familiar with |
Question: | Will the L22 4P fit in a 22" opening |
Answer: | Hi, I start collapsing from the top down. The most important item for safety is not having your fingers in a position that they get pinched when a section drops. |

User questions & answers
Question: | When are you bringing back the telescopic ladder? This “compact” style doesn’t work if you do t have a lot of empty space inside your attic |
Answer: | I've purchased a 32 oz and a gallon. I think I reviewed the 32oz. |
Question: | Is it attached to the door |
Answer: | The Alba website shows no parabens in the ingredients for this product. I believe the ingredients list on this Amazon listing is a misprint and should be corrected. If you’re in doubt, check the website or your local store (I think Target carries it) to verify the ingredients. Worst case, if you order this and it shows parabens on the product, just send it back and request a refund because it’s not the product you ordered if you ordered something without parabens. |
Question: | what ladder is suitable for vertical position |
Answer: | Smells horrid, like acrid oil paint. I can't use it and I usually like natural lotions, but the scent of this is unbearably strong and pungent. |
Question: | I have a 30x30 rough opening and a 8' ceiling. Will this ladder work? Also, what is the quality of the ladder |
Answer: | It smells but I wouldn’t say it’s a scent. Just lotion smell. It’s not strong but if you are sensitive it might bother you |

Step 1 Measure the rough opening
THE JOURNEY TO FIND THE CORRECT ATTIC LADDER STARTS HERE
Measure the space for rough opening where you intend to install your attic ladder. This attic ladder will fit in an opening that is 22-1/2- inches wide and 63-inches long. The actual clearance once installed will be slightly smaller.
Step 2 measure the floor to ceiling height
If the floor to ceiling height where you intend to install your attic ladder is between 10 and 12 feet, this is the correct attic ladder for your space.
Step 3 Measure the area where the attic ladder will be opened to ensure proper swing space
You will need at least 90-inches to ensure that the attic ladder has enough space during opening.
Step 4 Measure the landing space for the attic ladder
Landing space may vary depending on your ceiling height. If the ceiling is 12 feet, you will need 84-inches of landing space. This is the maximum amount of space needed.

User questions & answers
Question: | what are the tread dimensions |
Answer: | The size of the room doesn't really matter, sadly, because the fan is basically just for show. (It's duct-free and uses only a tiny filter screen for purported odor removal, so it's honestly pretty useless. It just lazily circulates the air inside the room without really processing it at all.) But if, like me, you have a bathroom that was built without any ductwork, then this at least offers a convincing illusion of an exhaust fan. :/ |
Question: | Can this be operated from above? I mean, if you were in the attic space and the unit/door is closed, how easy is it to extend the ladder to "go down |
Answer: | My guess would be "no". A 110v motor will burn-up instantly on a 220v circuit. |
Question: | Do you have literature you could mail |
Answer: | The 682 Duct-free Fan has a long-lasting charcoal filter. Each filter will last 60 to 90 days when operated continuously, or longer depending on frequency of use. It is recommended that it be change yearly at the very least. |
Question: | How wide is each step? Are the steps really steps, or are they just single bars, like rungs |
Answer: | No - it's designed to mount to a floor joist |

User questions & answers
Question: | I don’t know ,is it fit my ladder. If it isn’t fit my ladder, can I return it |
Answer: | You could view this device as a Relay Activated wifi switch. There is a relay inside that closes when the correct signal is applied. Closing the contacts on the relay allows the door to activate open/close. The two piece halleffect (Magnetic) sensor is available to independently indicate when the door is open or closed. Main Unit Device housing has a blue and a red LED indicator. For my system, Blue LED indicates garage door is closed. Red LED indicates garage door is open. |
Question: | I have an older set of wood pulldowns , the company is gone, are these generic enough to use on any / a different wood ladder |
Answer: | The unit connects to the manual wall switch that opens and closes the door. As far as I know that includes all garage openers. |
Question: | Hello does this product come with the pivot plates where the lag bolts go, because my plates are damaged |
Answer: | I would avoid buying this. The software is terrible. It does not function in google like a door or light. So google home has no idea if your door is open or closed. You have to go into the app itself to see. If you say Hey google, open garage door, it will ask for a pin number but the app wont allow one to be set. Since google doesnt know if door is up or down, the loophole for the pin number is to say Close Garage Door to open and close it. |
Question: | I have a older set pre- 2010 yet your picture for 2010 and over looks like the correct set? My hinge has that square box with the hinge -to pivot |
Answer: | HI, yes, you must control your garage door separately! One of our controllers can only be used in one lifter! |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the length of B in the last picture (showing the folding mechanism |
Answer: | it is not fire rated. |
Question: | What is the stair width? I have big feet and need a wide stair |
Answer: | Should fit...on center means center to center. So 24" on center is 22½" in between. |
Question: | Can this ladder be used for both residential and commercial |
Answer: | Yes, but it's a tight fit. The wooden frame is 21 3/4" wide, so while it will fit in a 22" joist bay, there's little tolerance for adjustment. Your joists had better be parallel in both directions. Mine were a little out of whack in both directions, so I had to make tapered shims to compensate. One hint: check for squareness of the assembly by closing the stairs and seeing if the door cover (presumed to be a rectangle) lines up. |
Question: | This version is currently about $20 cheaper than the 7' - 8'9"" model. Is there any reason this one can't be cut down shorter than the listed |
Answer: | Rather than risking your safety and welfare on an old unit, buy a new one. The ladder wood dries out with heat and old age, the hardware gets bent and loose. Probably one spring broke so they removed the other. How does it stay closed with no springs? My hardware and spring arms were getting very loose and the steps would crunch when you stepped on them from being dry. Weigh the risk $86 and free shipping for a new unit. At least that's what it was when I bought mine. Every time I use it now I ask myself why didn't I do this 15 years ago |
Question: | Is this ladder fire rated for garage installation? This is requirement in California |
Answer: | I think it might work but your first step would be close to the floor. Might be better to find a model mad for 8'-10'. I used this one in my garage which has 10'-6" ceiling, it is an awesome ladder. |
Question: | My studs are @22.5" on center, is this too small for the ladder? Or does the frame meant as 22.5" on center, rather than 24" (I think) on center |
Answer: | It should work. My ceiling is 10 feet and I had to cut over 2 feet off from it might be just a little steep |
Question: | Will the L22 4P fit in a 22" opening |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | I bought a house with this style of attic ladder, but the springs are missing. Does anyone know the length and diameter of the springs |
Answer: | I have this installed in my garage with an 11 ft ceiling.. It comes with a expandable pole to reach the loop to pull the door down. Once that is done, being 5ft 9 inches tall, I use a 3 step stool to stand on to fold out the ladder to the floor. I also use the step stool to stand on when folding it back up. I have had it installed for almost a year now and have always opened and closed it by myself. |
Product features
Step 1 Measure the rough opening
THE JOURNEY TO FIND THE CORRECT ATTIC LADDER STARTS HERE
Measure the space for rough opening where you intend to install your attic ladder. This attic ladder will fit in an opening that is 30- inches wide and 60-inches long.
You will need at least 79-inches to ensure that the attic ladder has enough space during opening.
Step 4 Measure the landing space for the attic ladder
Landing space may vary depending on your ceiling height. If the ceiling is 10 feet, you will need 70-inches of landing space. This is the maximum amount of space needed.

Question: | My ceiling is 7 feet high. Can I make it work |
Answer: | I ordered 1 pump from Amazon and the 2nd pump directly from US pumps. The first one I ordered from amazon came damaged because it was not packaged correctly and was missing the hose that came with it. The box was damaged and flimsy. The 2nd pump I purchased directly from the company and it came packaged properly with the hose. And it worked, it just rained really bad and it pumped the water. We just used once and it did not die yet. |
