12 best whole house fans
Whole house fans are an energy-efficient cooling solution that can be related to weatherproofing, HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning), building supplies, and tools for home improvement. These fans are designed to ventilate and cool an entire home by drawing in cool outdoor air and expelling warm indoor air, helping to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature without relying solely on air conditioning. Here's what you should know about whole house fans:
Operation: Whole house fans work by pulling cooler outdoor air through open windows and exhausting warm indoor air through the attic or an exhaust vent. This natural ventilation process helps to reduce the indoor temperature by creating airflow through the entire house.
Energy Efficiency: Whole house fans are energy-efficient compared to air conditioning systems. They consume significantly less electricity, making them a cost-effective cooling option, especially in regions with moderate climates.
Installation: Installing a whole house fan typically requires a professional HVAC technician or a skilled DIY enthusiast. It involves cutting an opening in the ceiling and installing the fan unit. Additionally, there needs to be adequate attic ventilation to ensure the effectiveness of the fan.
Benefits:
- Lower Energy Bills: By using a whole house fan during cooler times of the day or night, you can reduce your reliance on air conditioning, leading to lower energy bills.
- Improved Indoor Air Quality: Whole house fans can quickly remove stale indoor air and replace it with fresh outdoor air, which can be especially beneficial in reducing indoor pollutants and improving air quality.
- Quick Cooling: These fans can provide rapid cooling for your entire home, making them ideal for evening and nighttime use.
- Environmentally Friendly: Their energy-efficient operation contributes to lower greenhouse gas emissions, making them an eco-friendly cooling solution.
Considerations:
- Climate: Whole house fans are most effective in regions with cooler evenings and nights. They may be less effective in extremely hot and humid climates.
- Noise: These fans can be relatively noisy, so it's essential to consider noise levels and choose a model that suits your comfort preferences.
- Safety: Ensure that windows are opened when the fan is in operation to prevent a buildup of pressure in the house, which can strain the fan and potentially cause damage.
Types: There are various types of whole house fans, including traditional belt-driven fans and modern direct-drive fans with variable-speed controls. Direct-drive fans are generally quieter and more energy-efficient.
Whole house fans are a valuable addition to homes looking to improve energy efficiency and indoor comfort. However, their suitability depends on your climate, home design, and personal preferences. If you're considering installing one, it's advisable to consult with a professional to determine the best system for your specific needs.

User questions & answers
Question: | I have a two story, 3700 sf home with a solar attic fan. How much of cooling difference will adding the whole house fan make to cooling my house |
Answer: | The solar attic fan will probably make the whole house fan work more efficiently as the attic should be cooler. You can definitely benefit from the whole house fan though as it will cool your house and the attic rather than the attic only. I would only add that the 36-inch fan would probably be more adequate for your size house, but that depends also on the footage vs fan allocation. My house is 3400 sq ft and the fan works great for us. |
Question: | I live in the North East, how well do the shutters prevent cold air from sinking from the attic into the house during the winter months |
Answer: | It is pretty good at stopping the air flow but you will still loose a lot of heat. The metal shutters have no insulation value so you basically have a 3 foot square hole in your ceiling. This hole also lets in a lot of heat in the summer when the fan is not in use. There is a fix for this. There are several videos on You Tube that show you how to construct a cover, inside your attic, out of 2 inch insulating foam. It has doors that will still open and close when the fan is on. I have not built mine yet but plan to as soon as it cools off some. |
Question: | How wide are the vent veins that actually move? Will they fit between 24" on center truss giving you 22 1/2" opening |
Answer: | The cut out is 26" if i remember.. I tried to install it your method but couldnt and had to use the joint in middle method with extra wood for frame.. This fan has paid for itself already. Works great |
Question: | I have a 950 sq ft home. It says not to install in smaller that 1200 sq ft.... If I left it on low would it be ok |
Answer: | Approx 800 square foot here... We open the windows and leave the fan on low; it performs admirably. Make sure your attic venting is adequate; that makes the biggest difference. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is there some way to contact the shipping department for this item before I buy |
Answer: | Look for the QuietCool web site and call them. I did before I bought. They told me it was silent but it isn't. |
Question: | What are the dimensions of the ceiling box |
Answer: | The ceiling box for the QC CL-2250 is 14x18x10. Additional specs. can found here: http://www.quietcoolfan.com/quietcoolproductsheet.pdf |
Question: | why would u exhaust air in the attic |
Answer: | Because the attic is 120-160 degrees and is a heating blanket on your home. Any natural air is cooler than your attic. Makes your whole home a breeze way to outdoors. |
Question: | Since it's an 18 inch duct which only has 245 square inches of opening, how can it produce 4757 cfm? My calculations suggest 1000 cfm |
Answer: | That duct size suggests 45 ft/s or 31 mph air flow. Seems plausible. Not supersonic or anything ;-) |

Product description
Aprilaire introduced the first evaporative humidifier for forced air furnace systems back in 1954. Since that time, Aprilaire continues to lead the industry in whole home humidification systems. Our evaporative humidifiers work by piping water into the distribution tray located at the top of the humidifier. The water is uniformly distributed across the width of the tray and through a scientifically designed system of outlets. It flows by gravity over the Water Panel evaporator. Dry, hot air from the HVAC system is moved through the moisture-laden Water Panel evaporator. Natural evaporation takes place, the water is turned to vapor, and the humidified air is circulated throughout the home.
INCLUDED IN THE BOX: Installation instructions and template, humidifier with built-in fan, 24 VAC transformer, manual humidifier control with sensor, saddle valve, solenoid valve, and Model # 35 Water Panel

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it come with every thing need for a typical installation |
Answer: | No. You'll need 1/4" copper tubing, 6" duct tubing to go from supply side of humidifier to the return air duct, a suitable 6" circular duct to fasten to the hole you'll make in the return air duct, bell wire to run from controller to voltage reduction transformer. Do yourself a favor and get a roll of foil tape for taping up seams and leaks. |
Question: | I have a 2600 sqft home built in 1989, and am considering getting the Aprilaire 500 vs the 600. Is that a wise choice |
Answer: | Works quite well in my 2300 sf house. Was built in '92 so not too old but still not as sealed up tight like recent construction. From what I have observed, the humidifier doesn't run all the time and humidity levels have stayed constant even with fluctuating outside temps. |
Question: | can the humidifier bypass duct be on either side ?? The pictures all show it "by passing" to the left - i need it to the right |
Answer: | Yes, it can be changed from left to right. Basically turn the main part of the unit upside down and switch the drain and plug from top to bottom. The name plaque can be removed and installed right side up. Quite simple design. |
Question: | How often do you have to buy new parts? Filters? Etc. And what do they run you each year |
Answer: | I don't mean to say the same thing over again, Patrick said the same thing I'm going to say, but a new pad is all you will need in this unit. I'm also a hvac technican and April air 600ms are our humidifier of choice. I've seen some people who have such bad water the pad gets clogged mid winter, and I've also seen people who have bad water and have been using the same pad for years. rule of thumb to get the most out of your unit is to change the pad every year. You could get away with longer but why would you when you can get replacement pads for cheap at home depot. To install you will need 2 6" 90's, 6" flex duct, 1" zip screws, 2 wire, 3/4 inch pvc with fittings and glue, small piece of 1/2" vinyl tubing (optional), and a pair of tin snips. I would suggest hiring a professional unless you're an avid do it yourself type of person, but it's defiantly something a average homeowner COULD do with enough time and YouTube videos. As far as the solenoid, it almost never goes bad, like Patrick said they usually last around 10 years. I've seen some go bad in as little as 2 but those are 1 in 100 and factory defected. I hope this helps someone down the line. |

One of our agents will be more than happy to assist you. We look forward to hearing from you soon. Kind regards, AC Infinity "Your Cooling Solutions Provider!" |
Question: | Can you operate the system by remote control without the smart thermostat attached |
Answer: | without the controller hooked up it simply goes to full speed when plugged in. with the controller plugged in it can operate at any of the speeds 1-10. I operate mine with an Alexa controlled smart outlet. It returns to the same speed every time. Set it at speed 6, and then have the Alexa plug (or a plain wall switch) turn the power on an off. But you have to keep the controller plugged in or it will go to 10. |

User questions & answers
Question: | This is exhaust fan, I need to open window when running |
Answer: | Yes, it is required to have windows open when the system is on. |
Question: | i have a main entry way porch ceiling 24"oc is there a air intake filter kit ? that can be serviced from porch for powered attic air circulation |
Answer: | Mine does not filter air. It only moves the warmer interior air into the attic which cools down the house with cooler outside air. |
Question: | Does it make sense to have both the whole house fan and the attic fan? Quietcool makes both |
Answer: | So the whole house fan pulls the cold air threw the hose but it has to be colder outside then in the house. The attic fan pulls outside air threw the attic to cool it off during the day so your ac dosnt run do much. So I would use both cause they both serve different purposes. |
Question: | Can the vent be mounted on a vertical surface |
Answer: | You would need to purchase our wall mount adapter. Please call 949-842-3886. |

It's one of the best energy saving investments you can make for your home.
MODERN
Wirelessly control your whole house fan using a wireless two-speed remote with built-in timer and temperature control.
ULTRA-QUIET
QA-Deluxe whole house fans are significantly quieter than the old traditional style whole house fans.
POWERFUL
Our powerful whole house fans mount in the attic and cools your entire home for a fraction of the cost of air conditioning.
ENERGY EFFICIENT
It's good for the planet and it's good for your wallet. It will cost you just pennies an hour to run!
QA DELUXE IS PROUDLY MADE IN THE USA
QA-Deluxe whole house fans consist of a heavy-duty state of the art spun aluminum fan housing and heavy-duty fan guard for rigidity and safety. Motor mounting brackets with rubber bushings reduce noise & vibration from the highly reliable permanent split capacitor motor and metal fan blade.
Quiet Operation
QA Deluxe fans use cloth-lined, acoustic ducting, and a suspended fan motor for noise reduction. Heavy-duty support brackets provide additional support to keep the damper off drywall, further reducing vibration transfer.
R-5 Insulated Damper
An R-5 insulated damper seals off the living space from the attic whenever the fan is not operational.
All our QA-Deluxe and Centric Air models are installed the same way.
As long the joists in your attic are typical of most homes (16″ or 24″on-center) there is no framing required. You simply cut a hole in the ceiling (or vertical wall), install the mounting brackets, damper box and ceiling diffuser with a few screws. Then connect the ductwork and support the fan assembly to the rafters in the attic. Finally, plug the whole house fan into a standard electrical outlet.
What is HVI-916?
HVI-916 is the testing procedure for measuring energy efficiency and airflow (Cubic Feet of Air Per Minute "CFM") of whole house fans. It is the true apples to apples comparisons. All other CFM ratings are whatever the manufacturer makes up.
Should I purchase a whole house fan even though I have air conditioning?
Big yes! Extremely hot air gets trapped in your attic during hot summer days. Through the late afternoon and evening, air conditioning has the chore of battling this heat that is radiating into the home. Because hot air within the house rises to the highest levels and cold air sinks to the lowest levels, air conditioning is fighting a losing battle. Customers relying on A/C alone find that they end up with a hot upper level and cold lower level.
How much does it cost to operate?
The cost to operate a whole house fan is about 10% of what it costs to run a typical residential air conditioner.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this fan considered and exhust fan: pulling hot air hout only |
Answer: | The fan can either pull air in, or, can exhaust the air. We use it all the time on exhaust...open the windows just upstairs, say, at night, and the fan sucks in the cooler night air through the open windows. I usually open some downstairs windows just a bit and it cools the entire house pretty well. |
Question: | Is this fan reversible |
Answer: | Yes it is, and it's just as powerful both ways. I use it all summer to draw air through my house and when I reverse it from that, I get a wonderful blast of air. |
Question: | What is meant by mounting the fan so it can't vibrate? Must it be screwed into the window casing or can lower the window and padding on the sides |
Answer: | I did not screw the fan into the window casing. I simply installed a 2x2 wood bar and tucked the fan under the bar as a support. Removal is also easy with this method. I have no noise issues other than the normal fan sound itself. See my review with pictures in December if you need more info on how I set mine up. |
Question: | Are these enough to cool off a hot attic |
Answer: | As long as you have another window to open elsewhere in the attic, they move a lot of air really fast. i have mine in an upstairs window and if i have a couple of windows open on the other side of the house i only have to turn the fan on for 15 minutes and by then all the air in the house has been swapped out with cool fresh air from out side, (i run mine 15 minutes a night and draw the cool air inside instead of using an air conditioner. |

Answer: | Hello there, Thank you for taking the time to reach out to us. Since our fans have their airflow measured in Cubic Feet of airflow per minute (CFM) you will first need to determine the cubic foot measurement for the space that you are attempting to ventilate. From there you will be able to compare fans to your required space to see if they are going to be a good fit for the application. For example, if you find out that you have a 1000 ft³ space, and you are interested in a fan that moves 500 CFM at its top speed, then you would just use division to see approximately how many times that fan can exchange the air in that space. Assuming that the fan is operated at its top speed, then this means that 1000 ft³ / 500 CFM = the air in that space will be exchanged fully every 2 minutes. Also, please note that you can use this formula even if you are not going to run the fan at its top speed. But first, you will need to find out what CFM each speed of your fan is approximate. For example, if you have a fan that is 500 CFM and has 10 speeds total, then you would just divide the total CFM by the number of speeds to get a formula that will look like 500 / 10 = approximately 50 CFM per each speed on the fan unit. So speed 1 would be 50 CFM, speed 2 would be 100 CFM, speed 3 would be 150 CFM, and so on. This means that if you were going to run your 500 CFM fan at speed 2, then you would only be getting 100 CFM. If you were to compare this with the space that you have available then you would just plug that new value into the first equation to find out how many times the air in the space would be exchanged. For example, if you are going to run that fan at speed 2 with the purpose of helping to vent that 1000 ft³ space, then you would just express it as 1000/100 = every 10 minutes (approximately) the air in that room should be exchanged when your fan unit is running at speed 2. User questions & answers
Question: | Does this product include an opening vent cover or luvered opening |
Answer: | It's been a few years since I installed one but the ones I did all had an insulated double door that opened before the fan turns on. Depending on how well your attic is vented you may want to add more to let the heat out. These things move some air. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Would this fan fit on a 24 on center framing |
Answer: | Thank you for your question. The HV1000 series whole house fan is able to be seated either 16" or 24" on center. |
Question: | is there a way I could control 2 of these linked together |
Answer: | Hello, yes you may. The fan is controlled with a switch and 2 can be installed to operate on a single switch. Thank you and regards, Mark - Battic Door Energy |
Question: | would this be suitable for two floor home @ 2400 Sq Ft? if not- which would one recommend |
Answer: | No. I liked the construction and the insulation cover so I purchased it for my 1700 SF home. It was not adequate for the size of my home. I replaced it with a Quiet Cool CL-3100 which was much more effective and QUIET. If you live in a warm area like southern California inland areas, I recommend a larger unit, or as I did, I added smaller Quiet Cool CL-1500 for the master bedroom. The Tamarack is also very, very NOISY. I constructed a box to mount it on so that it was about a foot above the rafters as the instructions said this would help alleviate noise; this didn't help. If you can live with the sound of a piper cup taking off all night long then maybe the larger Tamarack is for you. |
Question: | what is the duct diameter of the QA 5500? I am assuming |
Answer: | 18” |
Question: | Is there somewhere I can download a copy of installation manual |
Answer: | You can see an installation video at centricair . com. |
Question: | Is it possible to duct this directly to a gable vent |
Answer: | I suppose you could but I don't know if you should. I added a gable fan also. Venting directly to the gable will not remove hot attic air which helps tremendously. The house fan runs during the night and fills the house with cool air that keeps the house comfortable all day. The gable fan runs during the day to constantly remove hot attic air. We only need air conditioning during a heat wave. |
Question: | What happens if in install a larger unit them my house needs |
Answer: | The size of the home isn't the issue, it's the amount of attic ventilation. If you do not have enough attic ventilation to exhaust the amount of air you are pushing into the attic, it can cause over pressurization issues including forcing the hot attic air down the walls and into the house. |

SAVE UP TO 50-90% ON COOLING BILLS!
A whole house fan is a primary cooling device that can significantly reduce or even eliminate the need for air conditioning in some regions of the country. Whenever it’s cool outside, it makes sense to take advantage of the cool fresh from, rather than using expensive air conditioning to cool your home.

Our powerful whole house fans mount in the attic and cools your entire home for a fraction of the cost of air conditioning.
ENERGY EFFICIENT

Question: | What is the watts of this fan |
Answer: | Do you have another remote light fixture in the house? That was our issue. We had to change the frequency so the remotes didn’t work on both fans. |
Question: | Does the fan beep when turned on/off, speed is changed, etc |
Answer: | Yes, this fan is wet rated. It can be outdoors. |
Question: | If My fans tend to collect a lot of dust, can the fan be opened up easily to clean inside |
Answer: | We received instructions but no warranty. Be cautious the canopy for the fan does not work for all sloped ceilings. We had to purchase another canopy for $69 plus shipping. That should be noted when you're buying online. |
Question: | Should sleep mode function identical to Natural mode? When in sleep mode, my fan is cycling through various speeds (including off |
Answer: | 15" :) Let us know if you need anything else! 800-724-5501 |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this the made of same material as a sun-shade that you use on the windshield of your car? Thats what it looks like in photo |
Answer: | Seems like the same material shiny on one side and white on the other. Do not think it would be suited for outdoors |
Question: | can this cover be removed/reinstalled on a daily basis without any issues? I like to turn on my fan in the mornings, then seal up during the day |
Answer: | It is installed using Velcro Strips around the fan or vent. I remove it with the change of season and then put it back on when the season changes again |
Question: | Does this cover come with the velcro tape |
Answer: | Yes, mine did not hold and I had to buy white "gorilla" duct tape and tape it permanently. 40"X40". velcro would not stick to fan frame or insulation material. |
Question: | Can i use it on the outside of the house, to cover the vents from blowing open and closed. will it hold up int the winter weather |
Answer: | I think since its plastic it will, if you can find a good way to attach it. The velcro that comes with it is useless. Maybe some good winter weather duct tape will work |
