Just be sure to have some way of getting air into that room while you use it, through an open window or under a door. It has to pull the new air in from somewhere as it pulls the smokey air out. |

But using it to exhaust the room of smoke as an example is fine. You would have to be cooking with grease all of the time like a restaurant for any build up that would cause a problem. I have used fans like this in kitchens for many years without any problems. Panasonic is going to say it is not a kitchen fan for one because they do not want to get in trouble when you mount it right above your cook top. OK to mount in a kitchen to clear the smoke from the occasion burnt toast or popcorn or bad smell of some cooked foods. NOT OK to mount directly above a stove. |

It has a metal diverter that changes the outflow from outward to downward and the diverter also has a flap in it to keep outside air from coming in, but since the "outside" for me was protected from weather, and I wanted outside air to come in even when the fan was not in use, I didnʻt use the diverter. I just mounted the fan in the wall (after making an 8 inch or so hole in the wall). To keep bugs, etc outside I built a square frame around the outside hole with 2x4 wood, and made a small window screen covering for it. Worked out well. The fan is so quiet I have to look at it to see if its on. |

If you are genuinely unconcerned about the looks, then as others have indicated, you could probably rig it to work. But I would get a much cheaper fan to start with, like on of the broan units. It's a pretty conventional set-up, where the leads terminate in a small electrical box the piggybacked on the top of the housing that slides into the wall space (at approx 11:00 angle).I toyed with the idea of connecting a plugged chord to the leads and snaking them around the fan housing and have the cord exit between the housing and the snap on cover but decided against this approach because it would pinch the cord a bit and present (albeit minimal) a fire/shorting potential. It could be done with kludging but I would recommend against it. If the AC outlet box is below the unit and you don't have to pass through a stud or a fire block, you could connect using romex thru the wall to the backside of the outlet box with NO hazards. |

If more depth is desired 3/4" strapping could be added to the bottom of framing. |
