User questions & answers

Question: Can I store the smaller, 1lb propane tanks on my terrace porch, possibly in a box, overall? in cold winters and hot summers
Answer: For maximum safety, my recommendation is to store propane containers in a weather protected location, such as garage or shed with some natural ventilation. Propane is a highly flammable liquified petroleum gas that vaporizes and expands many-fold very quickly if released to atmospheric pressure, and will form a highly explosive mixture if released in a confined space without outside ventilation. If then ignited by a small spark such as a light switch, the resulting explosion may be catastrophic. There are on-line photos of boats that have exploded from propane leaks in the confined space of a boat cabin with catastrophic results including death of occupants. The cabin top and sides have literally been blown to pieces in such cases. New, sealed bottles of 1 lb size are reasonably safe, but once opened or partly used it is best to store away from occupied spaces. Although the probability is low, the consequences of failure are unacceptable. 20 lb propane containers should never be stored indoors. Play it extra safe and store propane bottles in a garage or outdoor shed. BJG (PE, ichemical engineer, inactive, retired)
Question: can i hook a large propane tank to his
Answer: Yes, any size propane tank can be a source for it when plumbed correctly. The simplest way to go is using the F273704 hose directly off most tanks. That hose needs nothing else and goes direct from the tank to the heater. This model heater only accepts high pressure gas thru the "disposable tank" connection, so other hoses with that connection can be used as well as the "filter" F273699. The "filter" is to take out oils coming from most rubbers in hoses where the high pressure "squeezes" the oil out, but the 704 hose is made "oil-free" to avoid that issue. FYI I tried running this off a regulated low pressure source, but with it on "high" the glow was like "low" setting normally (showing a lack of gas coming thru). So if you have a low pressure source, the "Big Buddy" models have a connection point for such thru a quick disconnect using hoses like F271802 or F271803, but not this model (this one needs high pressure gas to get enough thru it's disposable tank port).
Question: How long with the heater run on low with a propane small cannister
Answer: Best guess is 4-5 hours on low. I sat in a hunting blind for 2.5 hours and the 1lb propane canister was about half empty.
Question: Does anyone know or understand how is it this type of propane heater can be used indoors without causing carbon dioxide poisoning
Answer: As soon as the weather gets cold, I put my Big Buddy Heater on a stand & use a Mr. Heater 12' hose with regulator running to a 20lb. tank in living room. I use the hose with the low pressure regulator on it & hook it up to the quick connect fitting. I have 2 20lb tanks in mint condition, and rotate them as needed. This will be my 7th winter using it. Old windows & doors let air in and I have a carbon monoxide alarm near by. Also use a leak detector to check all connections after hooking up a full tank. If it's really cold, I'll start it on high for a short time, then run it on medium & it keeps living & dining room warm. Cuts my oil bill down greatly.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this item be returned
Answer: I'm sure it can be.
Question: does it work in a box deer stand
Answer: I am sure it will. I use mine in a moving golf cart with a cover on it, and it works great. You need some ventilation though. The box deer stand shouldn't be airtight.
Question: Can you use a 16 oz cylinder
Answer: 14.1 oz or 16 oz ... “Take your pick”... [have a photo here to ‘add’ to that, but can’t seem to find a way to upload it...]
Question: New unit and new propane tank. Unit ignites but does not catch and stay lit, any suggestions
Answer: I have different model from Texsport. On mine the instructions say to turn the heat to high while holding in the red button. It would probably work on a lower setting, but would take longer to warm the bulb.

  • This unit no longer comes with an included fan assembly or switch

User questions & answers

Question: I know it says it has a fan but Mr. Heater removed fans from some models. Is this one of those models
Answer: The low voltage fan and switch IS NOT on this unit. There is a kit that can be ordered from another party that consist of the entire rear panel. It has the wiring an hardware attached to it with the switch, battery case and external low voltage plug for a transformer power supply. It is as simple as 4 screws to install. Mine was under $40. I could not find this larger heater WITH the fan anywhere. Many say it has the fan in the remarks but is not included. I hope this helped. Jack, Dayton OH.
Question: Is this safe to use indoors? Like gas wise
Answer: Many fear that anything burning gas will be like running a generator indoors that will kill you in 10 minutes. I understand such a concern, but this is much more like someone running a gas stove burner used in half the houses, that doesn't kill anyone in 10 minutes while warming water for coffee or such (does it?) It burns clean enough that there isn't the carbon-monoxide like from a generator. I ran the smaller version (Buddy) for 24 hours to do a "power outage drill" with freezing temps out to see what it's like with a CO detector set up, the CO unit never went off. I did go outside a few times like to get the mail and when coming back inside I could smell a bit of the "Burned gas", but it wasn't so bad to need to run back out. So you do want to consider such, but it's not a panic item. The manual does suggest cracking a window for some ventilation, but others say "That's letting your heat out in freezing conditions and stupid!" So it's up to you to perhaps do some experiments and come to your own conclusions. There's always the thoughts on possible gas leaks to check for before any use, so don't be afraid to do that. If using a hose and refillable tank, here's a simple leak check I do. With everything connected and heater off, open the tank valve watching how the hose "jumps" when getting pressurized, then close the tank valve, wait 1-2 minutes, then open it again watching for another "Jump" in the hose. If it does jump again, that means gas leaked out over the 2 minutes, otherwise no jump means it held pressure. It is against fire codes to have a refillable tank inside (anything except 1 pound tanks), so I think that can give you another purpose in having a window cracked, yet I've seen a video on another heater that uses those big tanks with it shown used in a garage (despite the "Outdoor use only" label showing somewhat contradictory info). So lots to consider in using these including the surface it sits on (they warn "May cause floor fading or vinyl damage").
Question: What size propane can does the heater use
Answer: It has places for 2 of the small 1 pound tanks like you find in the camping section of stores like Walmart, Target, etc. You can also get a hose like the F273704 by Mr Heater and go to any bigger tank you want (like the 20 pound BBQ ones, or bigger or smaller). On high this will burn the 2 pounds from small tanks in 3 hours, so running it 12 hours in a good shop will burn near half a 20 pound tank in a day. Many like the bigger tanks for both length it runs and propane can go for $3 a gallon in bigger tanks vs $3 a quart in those disposable tanks.
Question: Can this heater be used inside a camper
Answer: Sure it can. I live full time in a 40 foot RV and use a Mr. Heater Big Buddy that is hooked to a external 30lb tank. Then my other main heater is a Olympian Wave 8 that is plumbed into my RV's propane line. It produces no C02 when its in use but it does consume oxygen so as a result your ceiling vent should be cracked open a inch or two. For every pound of propane used there is X amount of ounces of water that is released in the form of water vapor. Having a window ajar releases this out of the camper. You can also get a dehumidifier to deal with that. You will instantly know this if you use this with no windows open ... your windows will be covered in condensation. You might think leaving a window open will let the cold in ... quite the opposite. It creates a convection current that aids in the heating of your camper.

User questions & answers

Question: Do I need continuous ventilation if using this heater in a 2000 SF space with a high (20') ceiling
Answer: YES you can hang this heater. It's been done. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZsVX6mh8O4
Question: how do you light
Answer: Hey Spike, I agree with Thomas W. Mine wouldn't start on the first try either. You have to hold the ignition button down, wait a few seconds, then depress again. It's kind of a pain, but it works. A more annoying issue for me was wanting to use it in my golf cart, but with every tiny bump, the safety feature kicked in and off it went. So, it is safer for home use. For the cart, I bought the Coleman Catalytic Heater with the special holder that fits in the cup holders. It's more quiet too. Stay warm!
Question: why does flame go out when I let go of igniter switch
Answer: Not a problem. Make a 10"x10" box. Nail 2x6 together in the shape of a U. Then put 3/8" inch plywood on top and bottom (3/8" a must on top). Then make a 2 1/4" hole in the center of the top plywood. Next screw the main heater assembly into the filter with the top plywood in between (the two should come together snug leaving a very small separation which will allow the heater to rotate with no chance of a leak but still be secure). Then attach the hose and tank. This box allows for a large tank to be attached, the heater can rotate and the tipsy problem is gone.. Just remember to turn off the tank first to burn up the gas in the line before turning off the heater.
Question: does this have a fan to push the air
Answer: I used it last summer (2017), at night We went to bed late around 1:00 am, and usually by 5:00 am the 1lb tank is already empty and it's went the temp is the lowest, I spent about a tank per night, kept our 8 person tent warm, we have ventilation at the top and all the heat went up but I rather have ventilation that non at all, I'll probably wake up at 5 and replace the propane tank. We camped I bigbear, CA and it was cold at night, I might try an electric heater plugged into my Honda but still you have Carbon monoxide coming from the generator.
Question: Can you HANG this from something
Answer: The 1# tank will ice up and slowly turn off the heater on anything but the lowest setting. That lasts about 2 hours. A little buddy heater with 4K/9K Btu works best with the 1# cylinders. I have the hose hookup for a 20# tank and it's nice to have the option of using either size. You have to light this one with a lighter which is just another thing to forget to pack.
Question: Does anybody have trouble lighting this heater? Seems I need to hold the ignition button in for a minute and it really hurts my thumb
Answer: As far as I know... No. A simular thing happened to me. I reattached the grill using good old fashioned wire hanger twisted. This was only a temporary fix.
Question: With an adapter hose can it be used with a large propane cylinder
Answer: Not sure what you're referring to. The one lb. bottle hangs suspended when connected. I wouldn't recommend getting this model. Get the model MH12C if you can. The regulator broke after a couple months and I couldn't return it. Instead I bought the regulator that was for the MH12C and adapted it to fit the MH15C. Since then it's been working great for a year. I also recommend purchasing the hose adapter so you can run off a 20 lb. bottle. It'll last a lot longer
Question: Has anyone used it tent camping? I'm afraid of fire and fumes, but the cub scouts insist in camping in sub freezing temps
Answer: A one pound bottle on medium setting will last about 1-1/2 hour so figure at least 25 hrs for a 20 pounder.
Question: how long does it last on a small propane tank
Answer: They can be rotated independently
Question: Just tried to make coffee on it and the grill started to collapse is there a sturdier grill for it
Answer: You do need thumbs, but no electricity.
Question: Did anyone get the "foot" for the 1 lb. bottles and is it a worthwhile add-on
Answer: Not sure if you have your problem fixed yet. But I had the same problem awhile back. I pushed the sensor probe closer to the heat element. I was too far away to stay heated and keep the unit on.
Question: how long does a 1lb bottle last compared to a 20lb bottle
Answer: That depends first I have no idea what a "Supermarket propane Tank" is, if it is a standard 20lb propane tank which you see on every gas grill and on this illustration then I can answer that question. 1 gallon of propane weighs 4.2 pounds, a 20 pound tank weighs 17 lbs empty and 37 lbs with 20 lbs of propane in it, a "full" 20 lb cylinder should have 4.7 gallons or propane in it.Now we have to discuss this model of Mr. heater which has two burners, you can run it on one or both and you can set it for low medium or high which is many differentt total burn times, I will assume either one or both with no mixture of settings.Single burner approx. operating hr.: 52/Low 37/Med 30/HighBTU output: 8,000 12,000 14,000Double burner approx. operating hr.: 25/Low 18/Med 15/HighBTU output: 16,000 24,000 28,000
Question: Can the 2 heating heads be rotated and if so, independently of each other
Answer: Hello, This is a wood burning fire pit so it is not ul listed. If you have any further questions please contact us at 888-881-4668. Thank you!
Question: do you need electric to ignite
Answer: Hello, The outside ring adds some distance from the fire pit bowl for you to rest the poker on. You can also use it to move the empty fire pit. If you have more questions you can call us at 888-881-4668 Thank you!
Question: The burners light but switch off after i release the safety shut off valve plunger, no matter how long i keep it pushed in. it should stay lit
Answer: I didn't find it misleading. It states the bowl dimensions in the product description.
Question: How long does a normal supermarket propane tank last with this unit
Answer: I would recommend a 36" grilling grate as the bowl diameter is 34".Thanks

User questions & answers

Question: can a thermostat or external termocouple be adapted for control
Answer: This product does not have a pilot. So putting a thermostat would not work to regulate heat in the area do you desire
Question: Is this natural gas or propane gas
Answer: This is a propane heater
Question: Is this heater strong enough to keep people warm on a small outdoor deck space
Answer: I don't recommend using this heater outdoors for warmth for obvious reasons. I use this in my garage when I'm woodworking with the garage door cracked. When the outside temp is 25-30 degrees, my garage heats up to around 70 within 20 minutes. This is my opinion.
Question: Does propane continue to flow when the switch is turned off
Answer: The switch operates the fan only. Propane stops flowing when you turn the knob to off on the propane tank.

User questions & answers

Question: how long does take to drain a 20lb propane tank
Answer: It’s not an issue I’ve ever had. Remember, you’re BURNING the propane so you shouldn’t be breathing it. Similar to a stove top with natural gas or propane. Go by feel, but you will definitely smell the burnt propane a bit. My gym is half the square footage and I don’t run ventilation.
Question: Will this keep my outdoor patio warm? Approximately <200 sq. ft., temps 45-60* F
Answer: Open propane valve and hold in the red ignition button for 2-3 seconds then let go
Question: What is the plug for
Answer: Since the flame is present when you hold the gas supply button in, the regulator is good. The igniter is constantly pulsing to insure clean burn, so if it lights off when you hold the gas supply button in, it is also good. You have to hold the button in once ignited until the thermocouple gets up to temp. It's a safety feature that confirms you have flame, rather than spewing unburned gas into the room. If you hold the gas supply button in for more than 20 seconds and it still goes out when you let go of the button, you have a bad thermocouple. I would return the unit for replacement, or have a qualified technician replace the thermocouple.
Question: Really quieter
Answer: Yes, this is a forced air heater with a fan!
