12 best gas heaters

Gas heaters are heating appliances that use natural gas or propane as their fuel source to generate heat and warm indoor spaces. They are commonly used in homes, commercial buildings, and industrial settings for their efficiency and effectiveness in providing consistent warmth. Here are some key points about gas heaters:

  1. Types of Gas Heaters:

    • Gas Furnaces: These are central heating systems commonly used in homes. They distribute warm air through ductwork and are controlled by a thermostat.
    • Gas Wall Heaters: Wall-mounted units that provide localized heating and are often used in individual rooms or small spaces.
    • Gas Space Heaters: Portable or freestanding heaters designed to heat specific areas and often equipped with fans for better heat distribution.
    • Gas Patio Heaters: Outdoor heaters used in restaurants, outdoor seating areas, or residential patios to extend outdoor comfort during colder months.
  2. Efficiency: Gas heaters are known for their high energy efficiency, as they can provide a significant amount of heat with relatively low fuel consumption. Modern gas heaters often come with energy-saving features and high Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) ratings.

  3. Venting Options:

    • Vented Heaters: These heaters have a flue or chimney to expel combustion byproducts, making them suitable for enclosed spaces. They are safer in terms of indoor air quality.
    • Ventless Heaters: Also known as vent-free or unvented heaters, they do not require a vent, but they are limited in terms of where they can be installed and may have air quality considerations.
  4. Thermostatic Control: Many gas heaters come with built-in thermostats, allowing users to set and maintain a specific temperature, which can contribute to energy savings.

  5. Safety Features: Gas heaters include safety features like automatic shutoff in case of malfunction, oxygen depletion sensors (ODS) in ventless models, and tip-over switches in portable units to prevent accidents.

  6. Maintenance: Regular maintenance, including cleaning the burners, checking for gas leaks, and ensuring proper ventilation, is essential to keep gas heaters safe and efficient.

  7. Cost of Operation: Gas heaters are generally cost-effective to operate, especially when compared to electric heaters. However, the cost can vary depending on fuel prices and heater efficiency.

  8. Installation: Gas heaters should be installed by a qualified professional to ensure safety and compliance with local building codes. Proper installation includes gas line connection, venting (if necessary), and placement.

  9. Carbon Monoxide (CO) Concerns: Gas heaters produce carbon monoxide as a byproduct of combustion. Adequate ventilation and CO detectors are crucial to prevent CO poisoning.

  10. Zoning: Some gas heating systems offer zoning capabilities, allowing different parts of a building to be heated independently, saving energy and increasing comfort.

Gas heaters are a reliable and efficient heating solution for many homes and businesses. Choosing the right type of gas heater depends on factors such as the size of the space, local climate, and safety considerations. Regular maintenance and safety precautions are essential for safe and effective operation.

User questions & answers

Question: if it has a thermostat, what temperature is it shutting off? I have a different fire place with a 73 degree shut off manufacturing setting, not enought
Answer: I asked the manufacturer for the thermostate info. It has a knob on top from 1-5. 1-60.8°f 2-75.2°f 3-89.6°f 4-104°f 5-118.4°f He also said that they could vary slightly from heater to heater.
Question: I don't see a pic or anything that shows where/how the fan mounts. Does anyone know
Answer: The fan will mount on the back of the heater. There is a punch out that will be removed and the fan will go in it's place.
Question: Would this heater work in a 2 car garage
Answer: In short yes. we have this on the first floor of our house. it is not yet winter, but this is a 30,000 BTU heater; it heats the entire house fast - like 20 mins upstairs and down. I would say the same for a two car garage. I plan on moving this unit to the basement shop which is exposed to ground level in the back and unheated; basically a 1 car garage back there and I expect this to out perform. I will add one thing: this is the blue flame unit. I have had shop heaters before and prefer the radiant heaters (of which Mr Heater makes one just like this) - they have the clay looking elements in them that glow red/orange; those heaters will heat things in the space and then those items give off the heat. I used to aim one at my roll away tool box. in an area where you might have a lot of space up above, such as a loft the radiant version of this heater may be better as it will heat the items it is near with less heated air floating up. either way, this is a safe bet.
Question: Does the mhvfb30ngt unit have an automatic igniter to maintain temperature or do you to to push an igniter switch to start it each time
Answer: It has a pilot lit that will stay lit at all times, unless you turn the dial to the Off position. The heater will start up when the thermostat dial settings determines that it's time to turn the heater on.
Question: I stripped the threads on the heater, how can i fix this
Answer: You can tap it out if you have a tap and die set, otherwise you will have to order new parts
Question: Want 30000 Btu radiant heater with blower
Answer: The 30000 BTU heater will be the model number MHVFRD30LPT. Click on link provided to view the heater. https://www.amazon.com/Mr-Heater-Corporation-Radiant-MHVFRD30LPT/dp/B01DPZ56KU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1514918538&sr=8-1&keywords=MHVFRD30LPT
Question: Will this work with a 20 pound tank
Answer: Yes, but you will need to add a regulator between the heater and the 20 pound tank for safety
Question: So, it has no thermostat but output is variable? How does this work
Answer: It does NOT have a thermostat, settings are either high or low. It will NOT turn on and off on it's own when reaching certain temperatures, it even says its NOT thermostat controlled in the manual.

Radiant Vent Free Heaters

Our Vent Free heaters need no external power, great for power outages and applications with no electricity. They can be mounted to the wall with the supplied bracket or on the floor with the supplied feet.

Most common uses are rooms that don’t warm well so you can adjust the temperature level in them without having to affect the rest of the home.

There are two types of vent free heaters, blue flame (or convection heat) and Infrared (or radiant heat). The difference in these types of heat are how the warm.

The Infrared heater warms objects. It doesn’t warm the air like a Blue Flame. It can be put in an area with objects which the heater will heat and then the object will heat the air. Blue Flame warms the air, infrared warms objects, which heat the air.

Note: Units cannot be converted from Propane to Natural Gas and vice versa. They are not designed to be a primary source of heat, as they are designed to work with a furnace.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this come with a warranty
Answer: Yes, if you buy this in the US and or Canada it is designed to be plugged into a 110v outlet. But please be sure the seller is selling you 110 v as they may be available online in both. Thank you
Question: How many hours will one full tank run with this unit on medium setting
Answer: It only makes that noise when you start the heater, after 10 minutes it will became silent as long as it stays on. I have 5 those heaters for 4 years - never had any problems.
Question: can this be used on a covered porch or screen porch
Answer: When I got my 2nd I left it on max the whole day. Should help speed up the 'burnoff'. Perhaps do this overnight. I do not recall it lasting more than 2 days. I have had 5 in past 20yrs.First one had a smell for a week, but was lightly used. PS: Always use a proper appliance cord. Ex if you need to extend the space around heater. I ran one under sofa as to allow proper space. A roommate used an construction type extension & thank god I came home when I did. There was smoke/sparks from the cord. Both cords were fused together, the things people do!
Question: I admire everyone who has been able to get this thing started. The unit doesn't allow you to push in the knob once it hits Hi. Help please
Answer: I use these in the center of the barn, but not in the actual stalls with my horses and alpacas. I know the wattage settings because I use a diesel generator as backup for power outages in Winter. The minimal setting is 700 watts, and this is what we use most of the time. It uses 1500 watts at the highest or at a higher setting. We are quite pleased.

User questions & answers

Question: How many different settings are on the thermostat
Answer: You tap into an existing gas line
Question: The natural gas arrived and says an external gas regulator must be used. do i really have to do this? can i just hook it up to my homes natural gas li
Answer: I believe that it would. I have it in a 200 sq ft room with 13 ft ceilings, the house is 118 yrs old w/no insulation and it works very well. I do have the bigger size in another room.It has 3 burners instead of 2 and you can turn on 1,2 or all 3. It heats 2 rooms I have.
Question: Is there a spec for how much natural gas psi needed here
Answer: The heater is not designed to be used with an external thermostat.
Question: Does this unit turn on & off without pushing the button? i would like to hook it up to a nest thermostat in my garage. is this possible? thank you
Answer: The fumes are not vented. Natural gas is mostly H₂, gasoline is about 50% carbon, coal is all carbon. So being mostly H₂, the combustion products are mostly H₂O with a little CO₂, not unlike what we breath out. Coal and gasoline will asphyxiate you fairly quickly because of the high carbon content, which must be vented outside.
Question: Where do i buy natural gas for it
Answer: Yes, but be cautious....if you're buying it as a heater versus an ornamental piece, you should consider other options. The amount of heat the unit puts off is very unimpressive.
Question: sq ft insulated garage (including garage door). Would this take care of warming up the garage
Answer: The ones we have do not throw off a lot of heat. They are nice for the long flame that lights up dining areas, but for heat, I would go with a different style.
Question: Is it possible to use with a thermostat rather than the low and high settings
Answer: Yes but it will depend on the ceiling materials and the clearance between the top of the heater cap and the patio ceiling
Question: How are the fumes vented ? I don't understand how you can burn something and not have to worry about carbon monoxide
Answer: It's a bit over 6ft.but you'd need at least 9 for safe use.this is very pretty to watch not as good for heat.but I bought it for the entertainment/warmth primarily
Question: can it be placed on wooden deck
Answer: This heater is great! I'm sure Amazon stands behind all of their Amazon basics stuff. I just set mine up again for year 2 and could not be more happy. Buy with confidence.
Question: thinking of buying 4 of them however just read the review and it says last years model is that true also does it throw of a lot of heat
Answer: It lasts a really long time. On a full tank, mine will last 12+ hours on a mixture of medium to low setting, about 8-10 on just medium
Question: can it be used under covered patio
Answer: Use an electric heater for covered porch. The risk of fire and / or carbon monoxide poisoning if not properly vented or if the unit is inadvertently left on is too high.
Question: What is the ceiling clearance
Answer: I know! The instructions are not very clear but if you move it to approximately 9:00 position (marked Hi) press in and hit the ignition, it will start. Hold the control knob in for a while and you will see it start to glow... it may "pop n' spit" a bit but it will calm down shortly. If a windy day keep the knob depressed a bit longer, release; and don't leave it until it a couple minutes. Make sure it is really going before you trust it. If you are like me (bald)... wear a hat, it really throws out the heat when you are close.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be converted to run on lp gas ? and if so what do i need to do so
Answer: It has 5 settings.
Question: Does this heater have electronic ignition
Answer: As Dan mentioned your home should already be regulated at the gas meter which gets regulated before your home. One good way to check - if you have a natural gas stove or boiler check to see if they are piped directly from your home piping gas line or does it go through a regulator then into your appliance. Most homes in the US are set up this way. This is something that can be done rather easy you should be able to connect it yourself. However if your unsure or don’t feel comfortable than you should seek the help of someone that can.
Question: I installed this unit and the small screen above the heating area getting very hot and is melting a bit in a few places. Is this supposed to happen
Answer: I can't find one. They operate on normal home gas pressure which sources say is 1/4--60 psi. I have the Blue Grass Living (blue flame) 10,000 btu heater. It operates to perfection, and it burns so cleanly! If you ever lose electrical power, these heaters will keep right on heating!! A lot of words here; hope they help....
Question: Can this heater be hooked up to a on/off switch
Answer: It is thermostatically controlled. However you could not connect your Nest thermostat up to it. The thermostatic controls will be done via the Knob on top.

  • This unit no longer comes with an included fan assembly or switch

User questions & answers

Question: I know it says it has a fan but Mr. Heater removed fans from some models. Is this one of those models
Answer: The low voltage fan and switch IS NOT on this unit. There is a kit that can be ordered from another party that consist of the entire rear panel. It has the wiring an hardware attached to it with the switch, battery case and external low voltage plug for a transformer power supply. It is as simple as 4 screws to install. Mine was under $40. I could not find this larger heater WITH the fan anywhere. Many say it has the fan in the remarks but is not included. I hope this helped. Jack, Dayton OH.
Question: Is this safe to use indoors? Like gas wise
Answer: Many fear that anything burning gas will be like running a generator indoors that will kill you in 10 minutes. I understand such a concern, but this is much more like someone running a gas stove burner used in half the houses, that doesn't kill anyone in 10 minutes while warming water for coffee or such (does it?) It burns clean enough that there isn't the carbon-monoxide like from a generator. I ran the smaller version (Buddy) for 24 hours to do a "power outage drill" with freezing temps out to see what it's like with a CO detector set up, the CO unit never went off. I did go outside a few times like to get the mail and when coming back inside I could smell a bit of the "Burned gas", but it wasn't so bad to need to run back out. So you do want to consider such, but it's not a panic item. The manual does suggest cracking a window for some ventilation, but others say "That's letting your heat out in freezing conditions and stupid!" So it's up to you to perhaps do some experiments and come to your own conclusions. There's always the thoughts on possible gas leaks to check for before any use, so don't be afraid to do that. If using a hose and refillable tank, here's a simple leak check I do. With everything connected and heater off, open the tank valve watching how the hose "jumps" when getting pressurized, then close the tank valve, wait 1-2 minutes, then open it again watching for another "Jump" in the hose. If it does jump again, that means gas leaked out over the 2 minutes, otherwise no jump means it held pressure. It is against fire codes to have a refillable tank inside (anything except 1 pound tanks), so I think that can give you another purpose in having a window cracked, yet I've seen a video on another heater that uses those big tanks with it shown used in a garage (despite the "Outdoor use only" label showing somewhat contradictory info). So lots to consider in using these including the surface it sits on (they warn "May cause floor fading or vinyl damage").
Question: What size propane can does the heater use
Answer: It has places for 2 of the small 1 pound tanks like you find in the camping section of stores like Walmart, Target, etc. You can also get a hose like the F273704 by Mr Heater and go to any bigger tank you want (like the 20 pound BBQ ones, or bigger or smaller). On high this will burn the 2 pounds from small tanks in 3 hours, so running it 12 hours in a good shop will burn near half a 20 pound tank in a day. Many like the bigger tanks for both length it runs and propane can go for $3 a gallon in bigger tanks vs $3 a quart in those disposable tanks.
Question: Can this heater be used inside a camper
Answer: Sure it can. I live full time in a 40 foot RV and use a Mr. Heater Big Buddy that is hooked to a external 30lb tank. Then my other main heater is a Olympian Wave 8 that is plumbed into my RV's propane line. It produces no C02 when its in use but it does consume oxygen so as a result your ceiling vent should be cracked open a inch or two. For every pound of propane used there is X amount of ounces of water that is released in the form of water vapor. Having a window ajar releases this out of the camper. You can also get a dehumidifier to deal with that. You will instantly know this if you use this with no windows open ... your windows will be covered in condensation. You might think leaving a window open will let the cold in ... quite the opposite. It creates a convection current that aids in the heating of your camper.

Product description

The DVAG11N heater from Ashley Hearth Products makes the perfect solution for zoned heating. The space saving direct vent furnace design mounts to an exterior wall and the adjustable vent assembly adjusts to fit walls from 4-1/2 inches to 10 inches thick. For clean, comfortable heat when and where you want it, the gas flame is completely sealed inside, away from all contact with room air. Air necessary for combustion is drawn into the chamber from outside through the vent and combustion products are vented directly to the outside. Only clean, gentle heat, in continuous circulation is delivered into the room. Windows and doors stay closed because no room air is used for combustion. The direct vent natural gas wall furnace is designed to heat up to 375 Sq. Ft.

  • 11,000 BTU heat input heats up to 375 sq. ft.
  • Designed for use with natural gas
  • Sealed burn system is perfect for bedrooms and living spaces
  • Matchless Piezo lighting for quick starts
  • No complicated venting to purchase or install, complete kit is included (includes heat shield, vent pipe, air intake pipe, flashing, cap and connecting rod)
  • Approved for use in mobile or modular homes
  • Power source type: natural_gas

Question: How’s the thermostat work. I see
Answer: It’s a standing pilot and works great

User questions & answers

Question: What kind of fan can be used for this heater
Answer: Haven’t used it yet. Purchased and installed during summer.
Question: I purchased a fan for the heater, but there are no wires to connect the fan to. Can the internal wiring be purchased
Answer: Depends on how much you use it, if daily use Approx 3 weeks. If use at higher heat output levels could be slightly less, if barely use could be a little longer.
Question: What size tanks can you use with it
Answer: This model will work with either NG or LP gas. The bf30pmdg is LP gas only.
Question: What are the clearance equirements, top, bottom, sides
Answer: It’s a terrible idea to use the smaller tanks. The pressure in the 20lb tanks are much higher than a 100 lb tank. The flame is much higher with a small tank and will not shut off properly.
