11 best flooring heatings
Underfloor heating, often referred to as flooring heating, is a modern and efficient method of heating residential and commercial spaces. It involves the installation of a heating system beneath the flooring surface, providing warmth from the ground up. Here's what you need to know about flooring heating:
Types of Flooring Heating Systems:
Electric Underfloor Heating: This system uses electric cables or heating mats installed beneath the floor. It's suitable for various flooring types, including tile, laminate, and carpet. Electric underfloor heating is relatively easy to install and control.
Hydronic (Water) Underfloor Heating: Hydronic systems use heated water flowing through a network of pipes installed under the floor. They are highly efficient and can be used with different types of flooring, including concrete and hardwood. However, they are more complex to install and require a boiler to heat the water.
Advantages:
Even Heat Distribution: Flooring heating systems distribute heat evenly across the floor, eliminating cold spots commonly found with traditional radiators or HVAC systems.
Space Saving: Since the heating elements are hidden beneath the floor, there is no need for radiators or baseboard heaters, saving valuable wall and floor space.
Energy Efficiency: Underfloor heating can be more energy-efficient than traditional heating methods because it operates at lower temperatures and can be zoned to heat specific areas, reducing energy consumption.
Comfort: Walking on a warm floor is comfortable, and underfloor heating provides a consistent level of comfort throughout the room.
Installation:
Installing underfloor heating typically involves laying heating elements or pipes on the subfloor and covering them with a layer of screed or other flooring material. Electric systems are easier to install and may not require additional flooring height.
Hydronic systems are more complex to install and often require careful planning, especially if retrofitting into existing structures.
Control:
- Modern flooring heating systems are often controlled by thermostats that allow users to set the desired temperature for each zone. Some thermostats can be programmed for energy-saving schedules.
Maintenance:
- Underfloor heating systems are generally low-maintenance. However, it's essential to follow manufacturer guidelines for maintenance and ensure that the system is free from obstructions to maintain efficiency.
Cost Considerations:
- The cost of installing flooring heating systems varies depending on the type of system, the size of the area, and whether it's a new construction or a retrofit. Electric systems are typically less expensive upfront, while hydronic systems may have higher installation costs but lower operating costs over time.
In summary, flooring heating, whether electric or hydronic, offers numerous benefits, including efficient heating, space-saving design, and comfort. It's a popular choice for both residential and commercial spaces, providing an alternative to traditional heating methods. However, the choice between electric and hydronic systems should consider factors such as installation complexity and ongoing operating costs.

User questions & answers
Question: | does this increase the room temperature |
Answer: | Yes, it comes with a programmable thermostat and you can set different times for different days of week, and you can program twice a day - so maybe a 3 hour chunk in the morning and other chunk at night. |
Question: | Can you install this in concrete in an outside location |
Answer: | Certainly possible, I am just not sure how well it will work thru that thickness of that stone. I have heard from others that their floor heater gets too hot to use. Mine is set to 76 and it is not hot, just very comfortable to walk on during the cold ohio weather. I have not cranked it up to the high setting which I think is 82. I would think if your granite supplier is familiar with this and say it works, I would have no hesitation that this unit could not do the job. |
Question: | Do you have installation instructions or some video posted somewhere how its set into mortar prior to tile and so on? would be very helpful. Thank you |
Answer: | I installed mine directly to the concrete slab and poured a self leveling compound over the top. It works just fine. I think the larger concrete slab acts as a giant heat sink and maybe doesn’t get as warm as it might otherwise and/or takes a little longer to heat up. That said, it works great and gets plenty warm where we actually laid it... in front of the sinks and in front of the shower. If you step off that area you can tell an immediate difference and I wish we’d put down a little more than we did. |
Question: | Can you cut the end if you have too much and terminate it |
Answer: | Sure, cut mesh and reposition the heating wire the way you need. http://www.heattechproducts.com/how-to-install-radiant-floor-heating-mats |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you use this under luxury vinyl tile? The lifeproof type with underlayment backing |
Answer: | If you want it to be waterproof, yes. If that is not a consideration, no. Also, I put the membrane down in one day, then left overnight to cure. I didn’t apply the tape until I was installing the tile. That is the way to avoid any raised/dried mortar at the seams. If applied the same day, it can be leveled more easily. |
Question: | Can this be used under ceramic tile |
Answer: | You should be able to. But you need to read the specs |
Question: | are these CSA approved?\ |
Answer: | The printed side is up so you have a second extra layer of protection under the floor and have the grid for straight line cutting |
Question: | iIwould like to install this under a section of laminate flooring, but not entire 1800 sq ft. What underlayment could i use in the unheated areas |
Answer: | Am in Florida, so no basements here. But I did recently install it on our concrete base and it seems like it’ll be fine. Both sides are a moisture barrier built in. Perhaps for a basement adding a dedicated moisture barrier first would help |

Why Choose ThermoFloor?
- Safe and reliable FiberThermics heating elements mean peace of mind under combustible laminate and wood floors.
- Complete solution – Subfloor, Noise Reduction, Mold and Mildew Resistance, Moisture Wicking, and Heating in one system.
- Ready-To-Go – Simply roll out underlayment, make electrical connections, lay laminate or engineered wood, and enjoy your new warm floors.
How to Choose Your ThermoFloor Mats:
- You can combine several, any-size mats to get the right total coverage.
- ThermoFloor cannot be cut. Make sure you choose the mat sizes you need to fit your specific application.
- Measure the area of the room and subtract any area with permanent fixtures or flat-bottomed furniture. Make sure the mat options you select will fit together without overlapping or cutting.
- If you need help choosing your fit, please contact our support team.
- Make sure you choose a single voltage option when purchasing multiple mats. 120V and 240V mats do not mix voltages connecting to one thermostat.
- 120V – Use this variation if you have a room under 200 sq. ft.
- 240V – Use this variation if you have a room over 200 sq. ft.
- You will need one thermostat per 200 sq. ft. with a 120-Volt system and one thermostat per 400 sq. ft. with a 240-Volt system.
- A 240-Volt system heats the same as 120-Volt, there is no need to use a 240-Volt on heated areas less than 150 sq. ft.
- Fill any unheated area with 1/8" padding.
Why Choose Electric Radiant Floor Heat?
- Directly warms the body, not the ceiling, so it feels warmer than forced-air or convective heat.
- Warms from the floor up, unlike forced air heat that leaves the legs and feet cold.
- Radiant floor heat is totally quiet. There are no noisy fans blowing warm air into the room.
- No uncomfortable drafts because there are no fans blowing air.
Cleaner & Healthier
- Cleaner, healthier and hypoallergenic because they eliminate the need for carpet.
- No dirty vents or ducts that trap and circulate air with dirt, dust mites and allergens.
- Helps to eliminate mold and mildew.
- Electric radiant floors are maintenance free, so there are no dirty filters to change.
Saves Energy
- Radiant heat feels 6-8 degrees (F) warmer than forced air. You can save an estimated 3-5% for every degree the thermostat is turned down.
- Radiant heat does not rise to the ceiling, where an enormous amount of convective heat is wasted.
- Utilizes 100% of supplied electrical energy to create warmth directly under the floor. No energy is expended operating fans or pumps.
- easy installation - 3 simple step process (1. prepare a clean and stable sub-floor, 2. place quietwarmth tile heat mat, peel back release liner, and adhere to sub-floor & 3. thin set and tile on surface)
- "minimal thickness profile - ultra-thin (less than .03") heated panels keeps same floor heights through room transitions"
- provides uniform heat - your floor is heated uniformly with no gaps and the radiant heat is dispersed evenly through the room
- safety certified - etl in compliance with ul standards for radiant flooring in the usa and canada
- cost less to operate - even heat distribution allows the quietwarmth systems to cycle quicker resulting in less energy consumption

User questions & answers
Question: | how many rolls of wire can one thermostat control? I want to install this on the main floor of my house under a new laminate wood plank flooring |
Answer: | yes, when you open the hot water in the bath or kitchen, the water heater automatically starts to heat the water. no need to turn it on.. and it just work when you need hot water |
Question: | can the thermostat be programmed to turn on and off |
Answer: | AC adapter would be a good upgrade. Why? After two weeks the burner stopped igniting. The spark ignighters work but burner will not light. I pulled panel to go through wires. No gas was going through gas valve solenoid. The reason is D size batteries only lasted two weeks. I changed batteries and it works great again. |
Question: | My warranty sheet/card is missing in the box, what should i do? is 25yrs warranty still valid? how do i file it |
Answer: | I would not unless you hook vent for exhaust to outside |
Question: | How many amps |
Answer: | Hello. At this time, the iHeat AHS11-D is not available on Amazon. Feel free to ask us any other questions. GadgetsGo is an Authorized iHeat Distributor. Kind Regards, John M. GadgetsGo |

Product description
Schluter-DITRA-HEAT is a modern, advanced under-tile floor heating system. A significant refinement on the underfloor heating systems from the last decade, it is thinner, easier to install, and is entirely waterproof. This is a roll of the uncoupling membrane used in the new DITRA-HEAT system. The DITRA-HEAT membrane not only serves as the perfect inlay for DITRA-HEAT heating wire, it also performs the tile-uncoupling functions of other underfloor DITRA membranes. This results in less tile breakage, eliminates grout problems, and makes replacing any tiles that do happen to break a trivial process. Product Features Tile Uncoupling Functionality Schluter-DITRA-HEAT membranes carry over all the functionality of Schluter-DITRA uncoupling membranes. The membrane functions as a flexible layer between your tile and the rigid subfloor underneath it, significantly reducing tile breakage and eliminating grout problems.
- Ditra Heat Membrane
- Dimensions 3' 3" x 41' 1"
- 134.5 sq ft Roll
- 1/4" (5.5 mm) Thickness
- UNCOUPLING FLOOR MEMBRANE
User questions & answers
Question: | How many square feet does this roll cover |
Answer: | Yes! That is one of the great things about it! :) |
Question: | how thick is this membrane |
Answer: | No heat pad, just the carrier. PBS's Cook's Country (America's Test Kitchen) looked at several casserole carriers and determined this one kept a 9"x13" 180 degrees F ziti casserole hot (140F or above) for 3 hours where the others they tested only did it for an hour. It also determined a 9"x13" casserole dish did NOT slip in this one. This one was their recommended choice which is why I'm getting one. When I bring food to Easter, Thanksgiving, etc. gatherings, I often bring a 12" x 9" disposable lasagna pan full of some veggie dish plus other food in a crock pot. I have a crock pot carrier and heat there isn't a problem because I can plug it in at the event. A 12 x 9 disposable pan may have to sit it inside a 13"x 9" glass or aluminum casserole dish to hold it steady, but that's not a problem for me. |
Question: | Can you put this under a Karndean vinyl type tile |
Answer: | No, while it has two inputs, there is a switch that switches between the two inputs. it does not have an option for both on at the same time. |
Question: | Why can't a different brand of heating wire be used with the membrane? Is there an actual engineering reason or strictly a sales/marketing reason |
