14 best electrical floor heatings

Electrical floor heating systems are a popular method for providing warmth and comfort to indoor spaces, particularly in residential and commercial buildings. These systems are commonly used in various applications, including bathrooms, kitchens, living rooms, and even entire homes. Here are some key aspects of electrical floor heating:

  1. How it Works: Electrical floor heating systems consist of electric heating cables or mats installed beneath the floor covering, such as tile, stone, laminate, or hardwood. These cables or mats are connected to a thermostat and power source. When the system is turned on, electricity flows through the cables, generating heat that radiates upwards, warming the floor and the room above it.

  2. Types of Electrical Floor Heating: There are two primary types of electrical floor heating systems:

    • Radiant Heating Cables: These are flexible cables that are installed in a serpentine pattern beneath the flooring. They are ideal for irregularly shaped rooms or spaces with odd angles.
    • Heating Mats: These are pre-assembled mats with embedded heating cables. They are easier and quicker to install, making them a popular choice for larger areas.
  3. Thermostats and Controls: To maintain optimal comfort and energy efficiency, electrical floor heating systems are typically controlled by a thermostat. Modern thermostats offer programmable settings, remote control options, and even smartphone app integration, allowing users to customize heating schedules and monitor energy usage.

  4. Energy Efficiency: Electrical floor heating systems can be energy-efficient when used correctly.Because they provide even heat distribution from the floor upward, they can often be set at lower temperatures than traditional forced-air heating systems, reducing energy consumption.

  5. Installation: Proper installation is crucial for the effectiveness of the system. It typically involves embedding the heating cables or mats in a thin layer of thinset mortar or self-leveling compound. The type of flooring material and the manufacturer's guidelines must be considered during installation.

  6. Maintenance: Electrical floor heating systems are generally low-maintenance. Regular inspections to check for any damage to the cables or mats and keeping the heating elements clean are essential. Most systems come with warranties for added peace of mind.

  7. Cost: The cost of installing electrical floor heating can vary depending on factors such as the size of the area, the type of system chosen, and labor costs. While the initial installation cost may be higher than some other heating methods, the long-term energy savings and comfort can make it a worthwhile investment.

  8. Benefits:

    • Provides comfortable and consistent warmth throughout the room.
    • Reduces the need for other heating sources, like radiators or forced-air systems.
    • Eliminates the need for ductwork, making it suitable for renovations.
    • Can be zoned to heat specific areas or rooms independently.
    • Aesthetic appeal, as there are no visible heating elements.

Electrical floor heating systems can offer an efficient and luxurious way to heat indoor spaces, enhancing comfort and adding value to homes and buildings. Proper installation and control are key to maximizing their benefits.

An Efficient System

The Heatwave system comes with a 10-foot long floor sensor standard for optimal use of your Heatwave System. Extra compatible sensors are available on our store page.

Fully Embedded System

Heatwave can be embedded in various types of cement-like material, allowing for several floor covering options. Embedding Heatwave allows for optimal heat dispersion and gives the end-user a nice, consistently warmed floor.

Be sure to get the right size!

Heatwave comes in various sizes to accommodate differing size spaces. It is important to accurately measure the space you intend heat. Avoid placing the heating cable under vanities, within 6-inches of the toilet gasket and under other permanent fixtures in the space. It is acceptable to place Heatwave in a shower, provided that is still fully embedded in a thinset/or Mortar.

Be aware the heating cable cannot be cut or shortened in anyway.

Get the Right Size

Be sure to order a Heatwave system for the area to BE HEATED, not the total area. The Heatwave heating element CANNOT be cut or shortened to a fit a space.

Smaller size systems are available to fit smaller areas.

Avoid performing any cutting/drilling tasks on a finished/partially finished floor that could cause damage to heating element.

Don't Power on Until...

Do not power on the Heatwave System until it has been completely embedded in a cement-based compound (thinset/mortar/self-leveling) and that compound is completely dried.

Do not power on a Heatwave System to "test" or to dry out an embedding compound.

Completely Embed

The Heatwave cable MUST be completely embedded (unable to be seen) in a cement-based compound (thinset/mortar/self-leveling).

Both connection/junction points must also be fully embedded, the connection point at the end of the heating element and the connection point between the red heating cable and the black unheated (cold lead) cable.

Ensure that air pockets in mortar/thinset/self-leveling compound with exposed heating element, get fully filled-in.

Perform All Tests

Perform all required tests outlined in the installation manual at several stages throughout installation to ensure that heating element has not been damaged.

Failure to perform all the required tests at several stages can cause system damage to be missed which can lead to system errors, ground faults, non-functional systems, and unrepairable damage.

Floor Heating Cable

The Electric Floor Heating Cable consists of a spool of heating cable.  Simply run the cable 3" apart across the area to heat using the cable guides to secure to the floor running the cold lead up the wall to the electrical box.  These heating systems are ideal for odd shaped areas or to heat around objects.  The RED HEATING ELEMENT CAN NOT BE CUT, so be sure to accurately measure the space you are heating.

Programmable Thermostat with Sensor

Honeywell / Aube model # TH115-AF-240S

The programmable floor sensing thermostat and floor sensor is designed to work with electric floor heating systems. It gives you the ability to accurately control the floor temperature for maximum comfort and energy savings. The thermostat features high-tech precision with straight forward, user friendly interface and contemporary design with backlit display. This floor sensing thermostat is digital, programmable, and includes the floor sensor. The thermostat is factory pre-programmed with a 7 day schedule that can be adjusted. This thermostat is 240 volt, rated for 16 amps, easily switching between F and C temperature scales.

THERMOSTAT FEATURES

  • AF mode-controls ambient temperature with floor temperature limitation
  • F mode controls the floor temperature using an external temperature sensor
  • Two temperature sensors-one in floor, one in thermostat for accuracy and security

Installation Monitor

The Installation Monitor can help give you peace of mind while installing the floor warming system.  Connect the system leads to the monitor prior to installation.  The monitor will "scream" a warning in the event the heating element is cut or damaged allowing you to make any necessary repairs before the heating system is embedded in mortar.  If the alarm sounds, stop work and consult the operation manual.  We still recommend checking the ohms of the floor heating system with a multimeter before, during, and after installation.

  • Red light and alarm indicates lead wires have come loose from the terminals or damage has occurred to the heating system
  • A white light indicates the monitor is operating
  • Can monitor up to 3 systems at one time when they are temporarily connected in series

CABLE GUIDES

Designed for fast installation of the the heating cable, simply loop the floor heating cable around the guide as you lay the cable system across the subfloor.

Secure the cable guides according to the planned layout using screws, nails, adhesive or glue approved for use with the given subfloor.  The heating element should be spaced 3" apart across the area to be heated.  Cable guides should be run perpendicular to heating cables.  The heating cables should have a minimum distance of 2" from walls and objects. Spacing between cable guides should not exceed 36" in distance.  Secure the heating element to cable guides by wrapping the wire around the stud.  Maintain moderate tension of cable throughout installation.  Do not twist heating element and keep the minimum bending radius of the cable to 1".

Cable guides are 12" long and can be cut to length. Includes enough cable guides for cable heating system.

Electric Floor Heating Cable

SunTouch WarmWire is a series resistance heating cable assembly for installation over plywood, backer board, or a concrete slab (according to ANSI or TCNA guidelines), and then embedded in 3/8 in. (9.5 mm) or greater self-leveling or polymer-modified thin-set mortar.

SunTouch WarmWire cables contain an electric heating wire to provide underfloor heat in bathrooms, kitchens, entryways, and other areas and are an affordable alternative to radiant heated mats. Approved for installation in shower applications where permitted. The durable, constant-diameter wire is easily secured at 2.5 in., 3 in., or 3.5 in. intervals with CableStrap. Controlled by a SunStat floor sensing thermostat (sold separately). WarmWire is available in various lengths with voltage options of 120 or 240VAC.

WarmWire Installation

WarmWire is the most flexible choice for irregularly-shaped or curved rooms and stairs. For typical installations, WarmWire is spaced at 3 inches on center. For areas with high heat loss, the spacing can be lowered to 2.5 inches for added warmth. In hallways and rooms that are well insulated, spacing can be increased to 3.5 inches on center. Controlling the level of warmth is easily accomplished with a connected SunStat Thermostat.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this work for 500875 model
Answer: Only one line is required, the other is an extra. I used the shorter one that came attached to the white tank. Bob
Question: Is this item "for suntouch" (generic) or an actual suntouch 500110 sensor
Answer: Actually it wasn't too bad...I dislike putting "things" together so much that I usually won't purchase something that requires it. But I took a chance and set aside a couple hours when it came & got it done. The directions are pretty clear but I'd suggest reading them twice & then laying out the parts so you can eyeball everything as you go along. I've only used it once but I had my driveway, steps, and a stone patio in the back that was so slippery when it rained that walking on any part became dangerous. Good machine and took me bout 5-6 hours(over 2 days) but it powered through everything and these areas have never been so clean and bright. I'd recommend it.
Question: Will this work with the sun touch 500675 model
Answer: I bought this solely because it had a Honda engine, and I was excited to get it because it was inexpensive for a Honda, but I returned it and bought another pressure washer because this pressure washer was poorly constructed. I was extremely disappointed to have to return it. It started similar to any Briggs and Stratton engine, a Honda.
Question: Will this cord work for any of the older suntouch thermostat units
Answer: I don't know the exact dimensions but it fits perfectly in a full size pickup bed.

Product features

Touchscreen Programmable Thermostat

The M429-TS is a sleek, touchscreen floor-warming, programmable thermostat that includes the safety of built-in GFCI protection with the accuracy of a standard floor sensor and several programming modes, schedules and events.

Monitoring Your Installation

The Heatwave Premium Kit comes with a floor alarm that once installed, monitors the heating element for damage. Floor alarm (sometimes known as a "screamer") is a battery-operated device that monitors for breaks in continuity along the entire floor heating cable and if the circuit is broken, the device "screams," allowing for damage to be assessed and proper remedies to be taken.

Trowel

Using a metal trowel can be risky if the heating element accidentally gets knicked or cut. Ideally, using a plastic trowel is the best bet, however they can be hard to find. We've included this plastic trowel to take away the concerns about knicks/damage, while making the solution easy and convenient.

Easy-to-use Digital Multimeter

With this easy-to-use digital multimeter, checking the pre, during, and post condition of the heating element is easy and fast. No more wondering which meter will work or give the appropriate readings. Follow the instructions in the Heatwave Manual to check resistance, ground, and the sensor easily and efficiently.

Single-Gang Electrical Box

No more wondering about what size box to use for the thermostat. We include a single-gang, old-work style electrical box with every Heatwave Premium Kit.

Extra Mounting Hardware

Sometimes when installing the Heatwave system, it would be nice to have clips to be able to accommodate special installations outside of the mat configuration or when using the free-roll cable. These clip kits with nails allow the installer to make custom runs of cable to go around obstacles, or go into hard to reach places.
