The 4 stands for 4 inches wide. The 1 stands for 1 inch wide. These measurements are in inches. Length x width x thickness. Beware, there appears not to be an industry standard on the actual measurements. I purchased a 20x25x4 inch generic filter that was actually 19 5/8" x 24 1/2" x 3 3/8". It was too small to provide an adequate seal so I returned it. Your best bet is to measure your filter then, look for or request the manufactures actual measurements.

Answer:	Yes, you can take return air out of the bottom or either side.

Answer:	You'll need some wire to hook it up, and you'll have to build a return box for it to sit on, because return is on very bottom, and you'll need a thermastat if you don't have one already as well as a place to vent the exhaust along with exhaust pipe. Other than that I installed this. New gas line, wired it up, built return box along with running all my duct work and connecting it to vents downstairs and upstairs in about 10hrs out of the box. And this was my first time ever doing anything like this! So you should have no problem. FYI if you have an old furnace, there's a chance the thermastat wire runs into a breaker box and converted to 24 volt before entering old furnace!! If this is the case you can just bypass all of it because this furnace gas it's own 24v supply for thermastat( and if it is old thermastat you'll only have 2 wires to hook up, only on thermastat that runs your central air will you have to worry about hooking up more! See the instruction booklet for wiring diagram!(wich for some reason was inside the furnace!! Had to remove both front covers to get to it) you'll have to remove them either way during installation to get to everything. Oh yeah you'll need a few pcs of gas line because female adapter is inside funace I just brought mine straight out the top and u'ed it around and connected gas line" mega lock is your Freind"!!!

The filter is normally available thru Home Depot, in case you would like to have an easy return . To answer your question, no the filter should not cause any undue workload or heavy workload on it because of the 4 inch filter. If your furnace is designed to equipped to handle a 4 inch filter it should be no problem whatsoever. Mine is, and I have had no problem in the seven years I've been using it.You need to make sure that the filter required is a 4 inch pleated filter and you must make sure that you have the arrows going in the right direction i.e. follow the arrows that are on the top of the filter and That will be the direction of your airflow. If you're having issues other than this you might want to have it checked out . BTW-how old is your furnace and how often do you change the filter?

Answer:	We replace our filter every 3 months. I replaced them twice a year until I had a biger system installed. We had an Amrstrong 16 ser system put in and now we replace the filter every 3 months. I would recommend checking you filter monthly by holding it up to a light and see how dirty it is. You environment plays a big par in when to replace the filter.

Answer:	I’m not sure if they contain fiberglass. All the literature I’ve found states that they are much more efficient than the typical 1” fiberglass filter, but it doesn’t specify what THIS filter is made of. I also can tell you fiberglass filters are typically cheaper and not pleated. These four inch filters are pleated.....so I’m going to guess that they do not contain fiberglass. But that is a guess.

Answer:	Kim,when I attempted to insert the filter (25x20x4) it did not go in easily. I m sure some schrunching has taken place. I measured the filter before insertion and noted from the outset that 4" measurement was greater than my furnace cavity. I will keep it in place until it gets dirty but will not replace the Honewell Filter from Amazon again. Live and learn after getting burned! g marie

Question:	How often should one change these specific filters
Answer:	What size filter are you looking for? This listing has 3 choices - both of the choices that have a description of mpr 1550 are actually called allergen reduction filters & clearly state that they are mpr 1550. I use one of these sizes & always get the 1550. If you need 16X25X4 it's called allergen defense filter mpr 1000. I couldn't find any other statement in the description that listed the mpr - so to me it's unclear. You might want to contact amazon customer support to verify the mpr, but also, the product can be returned if it's not what you were looking for.
Question:	I just bought a 1000 merv at a local store. They also had 3000 merv on sale. What's the difference between 1000, 2000 and 3000 and which is best
Answer:	The one I purchased was 20x25x4. If you only have option for 1 inch thick, then it sounds like they are out of the 4 inch version.
Question:	Are there 3 filters included in this product
Answer:	When it gets dirty on the air intake side. Don't wait for it to get caked with dust as this will cut down on air flow and make your furnace/air conditioner work harder to reach your desired temperature. Filter vendors often recommend changing 4 times per year, but your mileage may vary depending on how much you heat and cool and the cleanliness of the air being moved. I change about 3 times per year, but I could go to twice. Do you change your car filter? How dirty does that get? Be sure the actual size of the filter is correct for your blower. Filtrete nominal sizes and actual sizes differ. I got stuck with 4 filters I can not use. I bought the size 16x25x4, but the end of the filter has the actual size: 16 x 24 1/2 x 4 1/2. the 4 1/2" dimension is too large to fit.

All the products seem to be 1" rather than 4."
