11 best decking treatments

Decking treatments are essential for maintaining and preserving the quality and appearance of your outdoor deck. These treatments are typically applied to hardwood decking, which is a popular choice due to its durability and natural beauty. Here are some key aspects of decking treatments:

  1. Stains and Sealers: Stains and sealers are commonly used to protect and enhance the appearance of hardwood decking. Stains come in various colors and can be transparent, semi-transparent, or solid, allowing you to achieve the desired look for your deck. Sealers, on the other hand, create a protective barrier against moisture, UV rays, and other environmental factors.

  2. Oil-Based vs. Water-Based: Decking treatments are available in both oil-based and water-based formulations. Oil-based treatments tend to penetrate deeper into the wood, providing longer-lasting protection, but they may alter the wood's natural color.Water-based treatments are more eco-friendly and dry faster but may require more frequent reapplication.

  3. UV Protection: UV rays from the sun can cause hardwood decking to fade and deteriorate over time. Look for decking treatments that offer UV protection to prevent this damage and maintain the deck's original color.

  4. Mold and Mildew Resistance: Outdoor decks are exposed to moisture, which can lead to the growth of mold and mildew. Some decking treatments include additives to inhibit the growth of these fungi, helping to keep your deck clean and safe.

  5. Maintenance and Recoating: Proper maintenance is essential for preserving the longevity of your deck. Depending on the type of treatment used, you may need to reapply it every year or every few years. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for cleaning and recoating your deck.

  6. Preparation: Before applying any decking treatment, it's important to prepare the surface by cleaning it thoroughly and ensuring it is dry. Sanding may also be necessary to smooth the wood and remove any previous treatments.

  7. Environmental Considerations: Be mindful of the environmental impact of the decking treatment you choose. Some products are eco-friendly, while others may contain harmful chemicals. Consider the long-term sustainability of your choice.

  8. Application: Follow the manufacturer's instructions for applying the treatment. Typically, you'll use a brush, roller, or sprayer for application. Take care to apply the treatment evenly and allow it to dry properly.

  9. Safety: When working with decking treatments, use appropriate safety gear, such as gloves and eye protection. Ensure proper ventilation when applying treatments, especially in enclosed spaces.

  10. Local Regulations: Check with your local building codes and regulations, as some areas may have restrictions or requirements regarding the use of certain decking treatments.

In summary, decking treatments are crucial for protecting and enhancing the appearance of hardwood decks. Choose the right product based on your desired look, the level of protection needed, and environmental considerations, and be sure to follow proper application and maintenance procedures to keep your deck in top condition.

User questions & answers

Question: The instructions say to use with softwoods. What about hardwoods
Answer: "Hardwood" describes wood from trees that lose their leaves seasonally. "Softwood" refers to conifers (e.g. pine trees). There are plenty of Hardwoods that are softer than hard Softwoods (though generally hardwoods tend to be sturdier than softwoods). I suspect they're recommending this for use with Softwoods because they'll be more likely to absorb this than a hardwood would. There's a reason why you don't generally see Pine used to make Barrels (or boats), other than because any consumable liquid you put in a pine barrel would taste like Pine air-freshener smells. If my suspicion is correct, that they're worried about hard closed-pore woods not absorbing this as well as "softwoods".. there are some "Hardwoods" that are very much like "Softwoods" in this regard. For Example.. White Oak is used for Wine Barrels because it has closed pores (and because it has some natural resistance to decay.. more than other North American & European hardwoods). Red Oak, on the other hand, has open pores which makes it way more water permiable. You can actually take a small piece of red oak (like a dowel), put one end in water and blow in the other end, and (depending on the cut and particular tree) you can actually create bubbles in the water because the open pores act like straws. Anyway.. bottom line.. I strongly suspect they're recommending for Soft Woods because they expect they will absorb more of the material.. which would also be important for it to not leave a goopy coating since it applies like a thin paste. For these reasons, it would probably work well on open-pored hardwoods too. I suspect this won't work well with pressure-treated wood either. The protectant that is applied deep into the wood under pressure would close up the pores (by design), prevent this from penetrating into the wood (same problem we have with gluing pressure treated wood). Not only would this decrease it's effectiveness, it would also adversely affect how it looks after it dries. You'll end up with a much thicker top-coat if it can't absorb into the wood. ---Steven. P.S. I was going to check the questions to see if there was info about using this as an anti-rot protectant under a final top-coat.. until I saw in the that it's silicon based. I know it's not related to this specific question but... Silicone-based products are hydrophobic (they repel water). If you tried paint over this with a water-based latex finish, it wouldn't stick. The Roxil would literally push the paint away from it's surface electrostaticly, the same way it makes water drops beed-up. Bummer, for a moment I had hopped this might be a clear alternative to green copper-based wood protectant.. which requires a bit more work to cover with White top-coats. :-/. Oh well.. still looks interesting for what it is. I'm going to get a quart to try out.
Question: Can this be used on pressure treated wood
Answer: I just submitted an answer to another question here.. about this product being recommended for Softwood, not Hardwood. Please check that answer out after it's been approved for posting to see the following in it's full context. Here's the bit I included there specifically about using this with pressure treaded wood though.. "I suspect this won't work well with pressure-treated wood either. The protectant that is applied deep into the wood under pressure would close up the pores (by design), prevent this from penetrating into the wood (same problem we have with gluing pressure treated wood). Not only would this decrease it's effectiveness, it would also adversely affect how it looks after it dries. You'll end up with a much thicker top-coat if it can't absorb into the wood." Sorter context: I think they recommend only using on softwood because it's more likely to absorb deeply into softwood than (most) hardwood. Because it's a paste.. it is either going to absorb into the wood, or it's going to dry as a thick top-coat that's more likely to wear or wash away. The Pressure-Treatment process would also prevent this from absorbing deep into the wood fiber and pores. I suspect (but can't confirm, yet) that this won't apply well to Pressure treated wood for this reason.. at least not to new pressure-treated wood. If you wanted to protect old PT wood that's got a dry weathered surface, you might have more success. --hope this helps, even though it's not based on first-hand knowledge.. just my experience working with wood. :-)
Question: Does anyone know if this product will work on an exterior table that was previously clear coated? It’s in need of a new, more robust clear coat
Answer: I fear the clear coat will repel the Roxil Wood Protection Cream from absorbing into the table wood. If you choose to apply the product, lightly sand the table first.
Question: Should this be used after stain is fully dry or right after I stain wood
Answer: I would let it dry first

Product features

Roxil Wood Protection Cream

Weatherproof fences, decking, sheds, furniture and more without changing their appearance.

Roxil Wood Protection Cream is a silicone cream emulsion for wooden structures. The unique cream formula is applied in a single coat directly to unpainted softwood timber using a brush or roller. After application, the cream will absorb into the wood surface and create an invisible waterproof barrier.

Waterproofs in a single coat

Most competing wood weatherproofing treatments are spray applied liquids. Liquids, when spraying or applying by brush, are difficult to apply accurately without dripping or splashing onto plant life or adjacent structures. The cream formulation of Roxil Wood Protection Cream is easy to apply neatly and allows for precise and measured application. It also results in a complete even coverage that lasts longer than competitor products.

Roxil Wood Protection Cream will cover approximately 45 – 55 square ft. per quart.

Only a single coat of Roxil Wood Protection Cream is needed to protect cleaned softwood timbers for 10+ years. The cream formula also allows for a quick and accurate application, with no splashback or run off on vertical or horizontal surfaces. To ensure best results, treatment surfaces should first be cleaned using a biocidal wood cleaner. For particularly vulnerable surfaces, a pre-treatment application of a suitable wood rot treatment should be considered.

Unique Cream Formulation - Instantly Waterproof

Most liquid treatments change the appearance of wood, leaving a stained color or a sheen. Roxil Wood Protection Cream does not change the color or texture of the wood that it is applied to, allowing it to retain its natural beauty. If desired, it is possible to apply a stain before the application of Roxil.

Reduces Mold and Algae Growth

Softwoods are highly susceptible to mold and algae growth due to their absorbent nature, especially in areas with high rainfall or in shade. Roxil Wood Protection Cream creates an invisible waterproof barrier that significantly reduces moisture ingress and makes the surface of softwoods inhospitable to mold and algae.

User questions & answers

Question: I have old Keystone Kool deck which has some cracks. Can this product be applied like paint over it using a paint roller
Answer: Hi Alejandro.Yes, Cool is rolled onto your pool deck surface using a 1/2" - 3/4" nap roller cover. It does a good job of filling in the smaller cracks (under 1/8"). For larger cracks, you should fill them with Cool using a paint brush. Apply the coating into the cleaned crack and then feather out the edges so you don't end up with lap marks once it dries. After the patchwork is dry, roll out your two coats and the patch should virtually disappear. Cool applies much like paint does and you'll find that it's a super-friendly product to use. If you have any other questions, you can contact Encore's customer support at 888-776-2242.
Question: does it stain easily
Answer: Would not recommend! It stains easily , but it is still hot to the feet!!! Very disappointed, for the price!
Question: How thickly can the coating be applied. I have a standing water from a poorly laid concrete extension and a feathered thickness of 3/8" would fix it
Answer: Hi. Thanks for your question. Cool can be applied in multiple coats to correct small issues with standing water. However, when you get to 3/8", you're probably better off with a leveling compound that you can find at your local home improvement center. These compounds are less expensive and do a good job of repairing issues such as yours. Good luck and let us know if we can help you with any other questions!
Question: Will it adhere to hydraulic cement? I've done some mortar repairs on my brick pool deck using hydraulic cement and want to confirm it'll stick to that
Answer: Hi. Thanks for your question. Yes, Cool is compatible with hydraulic cement. It will adhere to the patch. However, be aware that if the patch fails, the coating will also fail. Patch failure can come from improper preparation of the surface, improper mixing of the cement patch, the patch not being properly applied, and from environmental impact (water intrusion, impact from heavy objects, etc.) All in all, if you properly prepare and apply the patch, Cool is perfectly suited to overcoat it. Thanks for your interest in our product.

User questions & answers

Question: If we over-order, can we return un-opended containers
Answer: Packaged powder product. I guess so. 2 pkgs. should do apx 2500 - 3000 sq ft. Sprayed
Question: Can you use a tank sprayer to apply the stain
Answer: Yes, you can. We strained it with a fine mesh first before putting it in the tank and had to take the tip apart for cleaning occasionally. Would do it the same way again.
Question: Can i strip an old deck down and then apply lifetime? or does it really have to be bare/raw untreated wood? you know if i strip it really good
Answer: what this product does is to change the ph of the wood cells, so that nothing can live on them, not bacteria, fungus or mold...my guess is that if the wood absorbs the product dissolved in water that it will do its job
Question: If I were to apply stain over this product to change it to a specific color will this allow proper adherence to the wood or will it not take properly
Answer: I've never put stain over the treated wood. I have however added water soluble latex paint to give the treatment some color/tint. Specifically, I used a very small amount of barn red during the mixing stage. Since the Valhalla product it meant to naturally grey the wood the addition of the red barn latex added just enough red tint to make my wood resemble aged barn wood which was what I desired. Adding to much latex as a pigment or staining over the Valhalla treatment I believe will hinder the treatments preservative effectiveness and it's greying result. Hope that is helpful.

Answer: Somewhere in product description, there is a phone number in Canada. Very helpful and will answer questions.
Question: What is the dark particulate material floating in the liquid after reconstituting? Can it be filtered out so I can spray it
Answer: I have sprayed it without any problem, though I usually use a brush because I find it wastes less material that way. You'll just have to try a small amount and see what happens, but it should work in my experience.
Question: What is the main ingredient of this powder
Answer: I think it is a copper salt.
Question: What is the primary ingredient
Answer: It would seem that the primary ingredient is ferrous sulfate. (I read where you only need this ingredient to get the results of Vahalla's. ) Research it. The info is out there.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be placed directly on grass
Answer: I suppose that would depend on the surface you were putting them on top of. If used on top of a concrete patio, or something similar, I'd say yes. If you just want to put them out in the middle of your lawn with nothing sturdy underneath, probably not.
Question: Would this work as a dance floor for my son's weeding in the backyard
Answer: Yes I used a circular saw
Question: Can you cut them to size
Answer: Very resistant. I have them on my steps and back porch. It’s been there without ceiling. Still looking like new since last year that I bought them.
Question: How do these hold up with chairs and tables when used for deck covering- do they scratch
Answer: I just used a straight edge and it came out beautifully. Be advised though, due to the the linear design, of you have a curved surface it is not possible to have the black edge curve. For the huge savings though, this stuff works great.
