9 best underlayment for ceramic tiles

Underlayment for ceramic tiles is a critical component of the tile installation process, as it plays a crucial role in ensuring the longevity and durability of the tiled surface. Here is some information about underlayment for ceramic tiles:

  1. Purpose: Underlayment serves several essential purposes in a ceramic tile installation. It provides a stable and even surface for the tiles, helps in minimizing the risk of cracks or damage to the tiles, and can also serve as a moisture barrier to protect against water damage.

  2. Types of Underlayment:

    • Cement Backer Board: Cement backer board is a popular choice for underlayment. It is made of cement and fiberglass mesh and provides excellent support and moisture resistance. It is commonly used in wet areas like bathrooms and kitchens.
    • Plywood: Plywood is another common underlayment material. It should be exterior-grade plywood and properly installed to ensure a stable base for the tiles.
    • Uncoupling Membranes: Uncoupling membranes, like Schluter DITRA, provide an excellent solution for crack isolation and preventing tiles from cracking due to substrate movement.
    • Sound Reduction Underlayment: In multi-story buildings or areas where noise reduction is essential, sound reduction underlayment can be used to dampen impact noise.
  3. Moisture Protection: Ensuring that the underlayment provides moisture protection is crucial, especially in areas prone to moisture, such as bathrooms and kitchens.Proper sealing and waterproofing of seams and joints are essential to prevent water from seeping through to the subfloor.

  4. Subfloor Preparation: Before installing underlayment, it's important to ensure that the subfloor is clean, dry, and level. Any imperfections in the subfloor can affect the final tile installation.

  5. Installation: Underlayment should be installed following manufacturer guidelines. This typically involves fastening the underlayment material to the subfloor using appropriate screws or adhesives. Proper spacing and overlap of seams are crucial for a successful installation.

  6. Tile Adhesion: Once the underlayment is in place, ceramic tiles can be installed using thin-set mortar. The choice of thin-set mortar should be compatible with both the tiles and the underlayment material.

  7. Grout: After the tiles are installed and the thin-set mortar has cured, grout is applied between the tiles to fill the gaps and provide a finished look. Grout also helps to prevent water infiltration between the tiles.

  8. Finishing Touches: Properly finishing the tile installation with appropriate trim and transition pieces ensures a polished and professional appearance.

In summary, underlayment for ceramic tiles is a critical component of tile installations that provides support, stability, and protection against moisture and cracks. Choosing the right type of underlayment and following proper installation procedures are essential for a successful and long-lasting ceramic tile floor or wall.

User questions & answers

Question: what is the thickness of this kerdi band membrane
Answer: You can do this but I wouldn't recommend it. The saw horse will not be as sturdy. The tolerances with the plastic is such that it would be a pain to insert and remove them for storage, but it wouldn't be enough to keep them from possibly coming loose under load or vibration. If you only use them once a year for something not very heavy duty and you live in a 400 sq ft house, then sure. Otherwise, they're meant to be screwed together as a solid single unit. You can stack them.
Question: Is this strong enough to hold heavy tiles
Answer: All you have to do with them is cut the 2 X4 to the length that you desire. On the back of the promotional material, it tells you the formula for making them to your desired height. But but it is easy enough to measure. The bottom of the base (which are the plastic boots the legs rest upon ) is about 1/4 thick. These are the best saw horses that I have ever used, and I have made my own. If you follow the directions, they are extremely tight and strong. 38 inches sounds pretty high. Mine are 33 inches tall, and they are pretty high.
Question: Can the tile be directly set over this material using a thin-set
Answer: Stackable only. No way to fold them.
Question: Will this work for outdoor application with swings in temperatures
Answer: These are made of heavy duty plastic, it come with 2 pairs to make 2 horses, you have to buy the 2x4. I bought these I use them a lot for projects around the house, I put chair mold up they come in handy for cutting and painting. I love them nice and strong.

Product description

Cork Underlayment reduces sound and thermal transmission and helps protect the floor against the transfer of stress cracks from the subfloor. Size:150 sq.ft./case - 2'' x 3'' x 1/2"

  • Reduces sound transmission from both the surface of a floor as well as through the floor to living spaces below
  • Use under ceramic tile, stone, marble, engineered hardwood and laminate floors
  • Acts as a crack isolation membrane that resists transfer of stress cracks from subfloor through to flooring surfaces
  • Reduces thermal transmission, increasing the effectiveness of floor heating systems
  • Easy to install in both glue-down and loose-lay configurations

User questions & answers

Question: Does it smell chemicals?/ Thanks
Answer: It depends on what type of floor you are laying. For floating floors such as click laminate or hardwood, it does not need to be glued. Tape the seams with duct tape and lay your floor. If you are glueing down hardwood, the cork needs to be glued to the subfloor.
Question: Can i lay this on top of a hard wood floor and then put padding and carpeting over it to soundproof my floor to make it quiet for my neighbor below
Answer: You can use either. Cork will transmit less noise. If the laminate is floating, you don't have to glue down the cork, just tape the seems. If you are gluing down the laminate, you would have to glue down the cork first. In either case, the 1/4" plywood would be stapled down with a pneumatic stapler (or screwed, but that is a lot of work). Staples every 4-5" in the body of the plywood, every 2" around the edge. This is assuming that you have a plywood subfloor, not concrete.
Question: Would this help dampen the sound of a treadmill? I live in a 2nd floor apartment
Answer: Cork is an outstanding insulator and can be used under the radiant heat elements - typically on concrete. I have radiant heat floors in the bathrooms. I did not use cork underlayment however because I live in Florida and did not have to concern my self too much with the time to heat a floor. I did talk with the manufactuer (Warm Touch) and they suggested underlayment (like Cork) under radiant heat if you are in climates where it gets cold. It allows the floor to heat quicker and reduce heat losses into the subflooring. I used this product under all my wood floors - it is awesome. Cork is a sustainable product, moisture resistant and bugs do not like it.
Question: We will be installing strand bamboo over our concrete slab. Is this cork underlayment all we need or should we install a moisture barrier too
Answer: It's 4 ft x 50 ft

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be used on bathroom floors
Answer: No but you can make larger loops
Question: could this be used under bamboo flooring to help level out
Answer: Each cable comes with a predetermined number of bags containing cable spacers and shingle clips, and each "bag" contains 16 cable spacers, and 19 shingle clips. The 80' kit comes with 3 bags, the 100' comes with 4 bags, and the 160' comes with 5 bags (those are the only cable lengths I've used so far). Detailed installation info can be found by going to; www.emersonindustrial.com, and following the EASYHEAT brand links, however...For basic installations with cable on the roof (zig-zags) AND in the gutters/downspouts, you'll need;- 2 shingle clips for every 15" of roof edge to be treated that DOES NOT have a gutter,- 2 shingle clips AND 2 cable spacers for every 15" of roof edge that DOES have a gutter- 2 cable spacers for each foot of downspout (spacer every 6"). - Add at least 2 more clips and spacers for every roof corner you'll have to go around with the cable. For basic gutter and downspout ONLY installations (no roof zig-zags) 2 strands of cable are required for every foot of gutter and downspout. For gutter/downspout ONLY installations you'll likely use VERY FEW of the supplied shingle clips, but you'll need;- 1 cable spacer for every 12" of gutter- 2 cable spacers for every 12" of downspout (spacer every 6")- Be sure to add at least 2 more cable spacers for every gutter/roof corner you'll have to run the cable around. If you're doing a gutter/downspout ONLY install (2-strands of cable for every 12" of gutter and downspout, the 2 strands must be separated by spacers every 6"-12") you may run out of cable spacers very quickly, and wind up with bunches of shingle clips you won't need. If you're going to run low on cable spacers, call EASYHEAT at 1-800-562-6587, and they'll send you more
Question: What type of mortar should be used to adhere this product to a wood sub floor? Modified or unmodified
Answer: 120v, The first three numbers after the letters in the part number is the voltage.
Question: Is this a water proofing membrane
Answer: Ace hardware, then cut the bolt to fit.
Question: Can I use this over my plywood subfloor
Answer: Yes the hieght is adjustable but in certain hieght incruments.
