User questions & answers
Question: | Does it allow the screen door to open all the way, 90 degrees from the door frame |
Answer: | It's a simple physics question really. Any opener would allow this depending on what distance the mounting brackets are attached to the door. If you are reusing existing mounting holes than you run the chance of repeating the same mistake. To allow more angle of opening you need to attach the (screen door side) brackets closer (nearer) to the door pivot side of the door frame. You could actually go beyond 90 degrees but that may be to hard for the closer to overcome especially in wind. We have the pair with the quick release at the bottom (very convenient) on a pretty heavy Larson door and once adjusted works flawlessly. With the closer mounted on the door frame only, extend the tube all the way out (fully) and lock it in pace with the button. Next move the door to the desired (fully open)position, mark the relationship between the door and the bracket, mount it (bracket) a 1/2" closer and you should be good to go.Hope this helps! |
Question: | are screws included in the kit |
Answer: | Yes, all the hardware needed for mounting (brackets and screws) was included. |
Question: | I have the dual closer system on my storm door but only need to replace the bottom one (heavy duty). Is this available separately |
Answer: | Hi Betsy, Yes! You can get just the Touch 'n Hold Smooth Single Kit and it will replace that closer. The Dual Kit is actually 2 standard duty closers that work in conjunction as a heavy duty system. So the Single Kit, ASIN B00R3HJ0CC , is an exact replacement for this part. |
Question: | Hi, what are the differences between greenstar models r-dsk-1101773 (sold through homedepot) and b-hds-1101503 (sold through amazon |
Answer: | Hi Abel. These are the same product. The SKU is listed incorrectly here. We are not sure how the Amazon ASIN got tied to the B-HDS-1101503 SKU but we are looking into it. Thanks for the alert. |

Touch 'n Hold Inventor
Years ago, the inventor of the Touch ‘n Hold door closer had a little daughter, and although brilliant, she was a little clumsy. She kept on getting her fingers pinched trying to make their old screen door stay open. When this happened, she cried. Not just a little cry. No, this cry involved big, sloppy tears. That old metal washer thingy was just hard to use.
Our inventor also noticed that his very sweet, aging mother had to bend down to fiddle with the washer so that the door would stay open as she did chores around the house. And because she had a bad back and arthritic hands, doing this made her mutter some very un-sweet words. Our inventor did not like to see his daughter cry or his mother grumble in pain. Thus, he used his many years of experience as an aeronautical engineer to invent what some have called, "the world's most convenient door closer." Someone has even called it the, "best invention since sliced bread." Might be a bit of a stretch, but hey, we'll take it.
Testimonial - Ed W., Hoschton, GA
"The door closers were delivered this week. My husband installed them on Saturday. You would crack up if you saw our entire family still hopping and racing over the threshold trying to beat the scary slamming storm door. The habit was ingrained in all of us: hop to it or your heel would be injured, your purse would be snatched, or your back side smacked. We LOVE it! So luxurious. Leisurely walking through our own front door. Well worth the wait for the back order."

Buying Guide
Five Tips for Buying Door Hardware
Theres nothing that enhances style and function quite like new door hardware. Its the first thing that catches the eye at the front door, and it feels good in hand throughout the home. Here are five tips to simplify the buying process.
What are the different types of door hardware?
- Entry hardware installs on exterior doors, and includes knobs or handlesets (handle with deadbolt) that lock with keys or touch pads from the outside and turnbuttons from inside. A deadbolt lock optimizes security.
Privacy hardware is designed for bedrooms and bathrooms, locking with turnbuttons and not requiring keys.
Passage knobs and levers are designed for hallway doors, laundry rooms and closet doors that latch but dont lock.
Dummy knobs and levers are decorative hardware pieces designed for pantry doors or other doors that only require a pull to open, with no latch or lock.
What safety features are available?
The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) sets different grades for door hardware, such as Grade 1 (basic), Grade 2 (intermediate), and Grade 3 (highest). These days, with more and more intruders using "bump keys"--a key that can open almost any lock--or locksmith tools once intended only to resolve accidental lockouts, many manufacturers offer bump-resistant cylinders.
Will it fit my door?
- Standard doors are either 1-3/8 or 1-3/4 inches thick, with most hardware designed to adjust for either. Extension kits are available for thicker doors.
View larger - Most hardware is interchangeable, only requiring that the backset (the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the knob or lock, usually 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inches) matches the hole(s) in the door so that the latch or bolt throws properly. Some hardware sets adjust for both backset lengths.
- Levers come in both left- and right-handed models. To determine the appropriate handing, look at the doors hinges from outside the door. If the hinges are on the left, youll need a left-handed lever. If the hinges are on the right, you need a right-handed lever.
Can I install it myself?
Most door hardware, including keypads and deadbolts, installs in under an hour with only a Philips screwdriver. Most keypads are powered by batteries, so no wiring is required. Handlesets sometimes require a drill. If the door or doorframe is not predrilled, door hardware usually comes with a paper template to mark holes for drilling and sawing with common spade bits and hole saws. Specialized tool sets also are available for door-hardware installation.
If you want to use one key on multiple entry handles or deadbolts, you will need a locksmith to "re-key" all the locks to the same key. This should be done before installation and only will work if all the hardware comes from the same manufacturer.
What cool hardware features are available nowadays?
Keypad locks and deadbolts let you add and delete numerous user codes as needed, providing family members, neighbors, baby- or pet-sitters with easy-to-remember codes. Cool for parents and great for keeping kids out of cleaning closets and utility rooms, some keypads have auto-lock mechanisms that lock after a few seconds in case you forget.
Once used only for government applications (as depicted in high-tech spy movies), biometric keyless entry systems, which scan dozens of different fingerprints for easy access, also are growing in popularity.

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the max door opening angle? Can it open more than 90 degrees |
Answer: | The door swings open from the side you install this on. So if the door opens up into the garage you are good putting it on the garage side of the door. |
Question: | What is the diameter of the pneumatic tube |
Answer: | Yes. a door opener allows for smooth opening a closing to prevent the door from banging. Push or pull to open the door and the door will close by itself. You can adjust the speed of the closer by turning the adjustment screws, you will need an Allen wrench for this. |
Question: | Is there a closer like this for an in-swing door |
Answer: | Yes, I mounted it on the pull side of the door. |
Question: | I have two of these on a heavy Andersen full glass storm door. It slams shut then bounces open and then takes forever to close - anyone have any tips |
Answer: | Yes just relocate the arm that connects to the door frame another inch or two away from the hinges . That gives more leverage and makes it easier to open the door. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this serve as a storm wind device Prevent the wind from catching the door in swinging wildly open |
Answer: | Not as far as I can see. The holding features prevents the door from closing. To unlock it you have only to push it open slightly the force for which a gust of wind would be ample. |
Question: | This is for lighter duty, like a screen door versus heavier duty like a glass "screen" door |
Answer: | I live in northern Illinois. I use it on my storm door which is a combination of glass and screen. I have had no problems with the door. |
Question: | Bought two in 4/20. Both have failed. Remain open abought halfway Please advise |
Answer: | Thanks for bringing this to our attention. When they "remain open about halfway" are you able to pull through the sticking point, or are they locked open? Sometimes our closers need to be "recalibrated" when the vacuum in the cylinder is too much for the closer to handle. If they're just sticking, we suggest the following solution: 1) Remove the speed screw from the back of the closer. 2) Open and close the door ~10-15 times to cycle the mechanism. 3) Replace the speed screw to its original position and use normally. If the mechanism seems locked open, please try the following: 1) Remove the closer off the door by pulling out the 2 pins fastening it to the brackets. 2) Take a thin screw driver or use the longer pin to place in the pin hole at the end of the metal rod. This you will use as a handle (it will make a T-shape). 3) With one hand grab the cylinder and the other hand grab the metal rod. Pull the two apart slightly and turn the rod 180 degrees (pull and twist at the same time without engaging the button --you may have to pull pretty hard). The rod should release and the door closer should work fine. If these solutions don't work for you, let us know so we can troubleshoot further. |
Question: | Most closers have a last second release to "slam" the door shut. Does this have the same type of action or close quietly |
Answer: | Hi there! Thanks for your question. Our closers do have a 2nd phase for latching the door, but it's adjustable so you can make it louder (slam harder) or softer if you'd like. This can be accomplished by reorienting the bracket on the door. Instructions for doing this are included in the kit. |

User questions & answers
Question: | does the order only comes with one or a pair |
Answer: | It comes with one. |
Question: | Will this transition from hardwood to thin carpet |
Answer: | yes |
Question: | Hi. Could this work on the top of a door? I have a gap where bugs and a draft are definitely getting in. Would this stop both |
Answer: | Absolutely. I have it on the top, bottom, and sides of my door. |
Question: | Does this door draft stopper work on blocking light |
Answer: | I don't know. Because I used it on my Screen/Security Door. But it is very sturdy, its not flimsy. |
Question: | Is it compatible with other brands of storm doors |
Answer: | You should prob ably contact the company to be sure, but I would guess that if the size is right, it should work. |
Question: | How long is this item? I need a closer that is about 12 inches in length |
Answer: | The closer itself (cylinder) is about 12 1/4", but you need a minimum of 12 3/4" to allow for the connectors to attach to the brackets. |
Question: | Our current storm door current slams back fast before finally catches with only about 4 inches until closed. Does this one catch sooner than that |
Answer: | Good question. Try adjusting the screw at the end of the closer. If that doesn’t work it is time for a new closer. This closer is an exact Andersen/EMCO replacement for closers with two piece door jamb brackets. |
Question: | Does this come with installation instructions |
Answer: | Good question. There is a general instruction sheet that is included with the package. If you are replacing a closer on your Andersen door this is a one for one replacement. There are specific door instructions originally included with the door. If you need those please forward the door’s serial number found in hinge area to Colden Solutions and we will send a copy to you. User questions & answers
Question: | My door is 43" wide. I need it to open to 90 degrees. Is the arm long enough to allow that swing |
Answer: | Yes, the SK1730 would allow you to open the door to 90 degree if you follow the installation instruction to do the installation. |
Question: | Does this closer actually put some pressure to keep the door closed |
Answer: | Yes, the closer will close the door fast at the end (about 5"). This will overcome pressure resistance created by the prime door and the storm door. |
Question: | My current storm door doesn't open wide enough, will this allow the door to open more |
Answer: | I would say with the chain you can open the door about 7/10 of the way. |
Question: | Does the aluminum closer come with aluminum hardware? How did the closer fare in extreme elements |
Answer: | Our storm door closer is designed for storm door applications. They would last for years to come if installed and used in the intended applications. Please contact us if your application is outside the design intent. |
Question: | how to install an upper door closer on emco 400 door, with roll-up screen |
Answer: | When you get the answer I’ll need to know. My husband attached this and now the screen has a hole throughout and can’t be used when attached. Good luck! |
Question: | I opened my storm door and locked the bottom and now can’t get it to release |
Answer: | Good question. If the closer is operating correctly just open the door slightly more and the button should release allowing the closer rod to retract and the door to close. If that does not work or the door can not physically open further disconnect the closer from the door jamb and try to pull rod out with locking pliers or ‘Vice Grips’. Otherwise the closer may be defective from wind damage, age or use. |
Question: | does this come with the mounting brackets and screws |
Answer: | Yes it does, comes with all the hardware needed |
Question: | How can the item dimensions (15.75") be longer than the package dimensions |
Answer: | I think the item dimensions probably include the bracket, since the bracket is not attached in the package, the package is shorter than the assembled product. |
Product features
The complete package
* Our well-known and reliable SK1730 pneumatic (air filled) heavy door closer (for heavier storm and screen doors);
* A special wide-base bracket for the door jamb, which allows new holes to be drilled if your existing holes have been damaged or stripped;
* Extra-long screws, for extra strength in holding the door closer in place; and
* Our SK14 wind chain, to protect the door, the glass and the door closer pump from damage if a strong wind catches the door as it is opening.
Additional Features
The heavy duty closer features winter and summer settings for when screens are used instead of glass, and features an air by-pass for extra latching power. The closing speed is regulated by an adjustment screw at the end of the tube. Tightening the screw will slow or stop the closing, loosening it will speed up the closing.

User questions & answers
Question: | What model lock cylinder is this? The cylinder you actually put the key in |
Answer: | It's our own key cylinder. It isn't compatible with the main door key cylinders. |
Question: | How do you lock/unlock the door from inside the house? Is it located on top or along the side |
Answer: | The inside latch of the SK312 has a slider that can lock / unlock the latch from inside. When inside, you do not use the key to lock / unlock. |
Question: | How can I get another set of keys for my door |
Answer: | Locksmith or most big chain hardware stores should be able to cut additional keys for you. |
Question: | Is it possible to have 3 sets made that use the same key? I have 3 storm doors |
Answer: | No, not for this model. You can order keyed alike cylinders from us for model SK1215, SKGLK, and HK01-I. Send us an email, we will send you detail instructions. |

Classic simplicity
Our VP Push Button Handle Sets offer a simple upgrade replacement for your basic storm door handle.

And whichever you choose, know that we stand behind 60 years of storm door hardware experience, offering products of the highest quality and unquestionable customer service.
Metal Push-Button
Our handles are made with all metal components, including the button itself.
Metal buttons last longer and function smoother than other brands' plastic buttons.
High-end Inside Latch
Our competitors skimp on the inside latch with old models that don't work well or cheap components that break.
We include the same high quality WC Latch that we include with our most luxurious handle sets.
Solid Nylon Strike
The SK2 Door Strike included in this set is made from a single piece of solid nylon, built to last.
Using this type of strike is only possible because we've included our WC Inside Latch.
Other brands offer cheap latches with spring-loaded strikes that are known to break.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I put a cat sized pet door in this particular storm door |
Answer: | I'm sure that you could as there is enough room at the bottom of the door. However, I've never had to install a pet door, so I'm no expert. The door is constructed of a piece of plywood clad with 2 thin sheets of aluminum, so I would think that installing the pet door would be easy. |
Question: | Why is the glass blue in the picture |
Answer: | Because it looks cool? Honestly I don't know. Call it artistic license. The glass in my door is clear. |
Question: | Whats the length of this door |
Answer: | 79 1/2 inches plus weather stripping |
Question: | is hardware included? latch and hinges |
Answer: | My door never arrived, it was damaged in route and the company did not want to ship a replacement. Very dissatisfied. |
Question: | Does this part fit most storm doors |
Answer: | Good question. Yes, it can be used for most storm doors as it is a great quality storm door closer. The locations of the brackets may change slightly. |
Question: | Can I use this to replace the lower closer without taking the old brackets off? The screws on old brackets won't move |
Answer: | Good question. You should be able to swap closers no problem using existing brackets. Andersen has not changed the design recently. If you do need to remove screws ask a friend to loan you an impact driver cordless drill... They work great on those tough screws. Question: | Can this be mounted on outside of a wood screen door that opens toward inside patio |
Answer: | has to be mounted on the inside of the door to pull the door closed. buy one at big box store. much cheaper |
Question: | I have a pella storm door and this is the closest I could find to match - has anyone used this closer on a pella storm door |
Answer: | Not sure. I have only used this on an Andersen door. |
