There’s nothing that enhances style and function quite like new door hardware. It’s the first thing that catches the eye at the front door, and it feels good in hand throughout the home. Here are five tips to simplify the buying process.

What are the different types of door hardware?

Entry hardware installs on exterior doors, and includes knobs or handlesets (handle with deadbolt) that lock with keys or touch pads from the outside and turnbuttons from inside. A deadbolt lock optimizes security.

Privacy hardware is designed for bedrooms and bathrooms, locking with turnbuttons and not requiring keys.

Passage knobs and levers are designed for hallway doors, laundry rooms and closet doors that latch but don’t lock.

Dummy knobs and levers are decorative hardware pieces designed for pantry doors or other doors that only require a pull to open, with no latch or lock.

What safety features are available?

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) sets different grades for door hardware, such as Grade 1 (basic), Grade 2 (intermediate), and Grade 3 (highest). These days, with more and more intruders using "bump keys"--a key that can open almost any lock--or locksmith tools once intended only to resolve accidental lockouts, many manufacturers offer bump-resistant cylinders.

Will it fit my door?

• Standard doors are either 1-3/8 or 1-3/4 inches thick, with most hardware designed to adjust for either. Extension kits are available for thicker doors.

• Most hardware is interchangeable, only requiring that the backset (the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the knob or lock, usually 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inches) matches the hole(s) in the door so that the latch or bolt throws properly. Some hardware sets adjust for both backset lengths.
• Levers come in both left- and right-handed models. To determine the appropriate handing, look at the door’s hinges from outside the door. If the hinges are on the left, you’ll need a left-handed lever. If the hinges are on the right, you need a right-handed lever.

Can I install it myself?

Most door hardware, including keypads and deadbolts, installs in under an hour with only a Philips screwdriver. Most keypads are powered by batteries, so no wiring is required. Handlesets sometimes require a drill. If the door or doorframe is not predrilled, door hardware usually comes with a paper template to mark holes for drilling and sawing with common spade bits and hole saws. Specialized tool sets also are available for door-hardware installation.

If you want to use one key on multiple entry handles or deadbolts, you will need a locksmith to "re-key" all the locks to the same key. This should be done before installation and only will work if all the hardware comes from the same manufacturer.

Keypad locks and deadbolts let you add and delete numerous user codes as needed, providing family members, neighbors, baby- or pet-sitters with easy-to-remember codes. Will it work for me?

First of all, check if your door closes properly. If you have problems closing your door manually, or usually need an extra push to close and latch it, this product won't work. It’s meant to be used on light doors that can be closed easily.

You should also check if there are any technical malfunctions before installing the closer. For example, check your hinges and make sure that they are oiled and work properly. And check your lock to make sure that it is not stiff so that it prevents the door from closing.

Is your door light enough?

Our SK50 Automatic Door Coser has been engineered to close light doors that weight 30 lb or less, like the interior doors you can find in most houses.

But don’t despair if your door is heavier. If your door weights less than 60 lb, our 2 pack will do the trick (assuming that your door closes properly).

How do I calculate the weight of my door?

You can find several tools to calculate the weight of your door online.

You will need to know the measurements, such as height, width and thickness of the door, and the material.

Once you have this data, finding the weight is a piece of cake!

Prepare your door

Close your door and remove the hinge pin. A hammer and a screwdriver or a parrot wrench will do the trick. We also include a narrow pin that you can use to pop out your existing hinge pin.

Prepare your SK50 Automatic Door Closer

Take your SK50 Automatic Door Closer.

1. Remove the top cover and the pin sleeve.
2. On the top you will see a lock pin, remove it and set it aside, you will need it soon!
3. Spread the legs, so that the tool is ready to be inserted into the hinge

Install the SK50 Automatic Door Closer in the hinge

1. Insert the SK50 Automatic Door Closer with the teeth of the legs facing the door.
2. Tight the legs so that the teeth are closed on the hinge.
3. Take the wrench provided with your pack and insert it in a space on the side of the the nut as close to the door as possible.
4. Turn it clockwise.
5. look on the top of the nut and see where there is a hole in which you can fit the safety pin.
6. Insert the safety pin.

Test for the result

Open the door and see if the spring has enough torsion to close it. If it does, you are all set! If it doesn't:

1. Take the wrench provided with your pack and insert it in a space on the side of the nut as close to the door as possible.
2. Remove the safety pin.
3. Apply more torsion.
4. Reinsert the safety pin.
5. Test.

If you are using it on a light door that weights 30lb, it will work. If, however, you are installing it on a heavier door, only one SK50 Automatic Door Closer won't work.

In that case install two.

But, remember, the SK50 Automatic Door Closer hasn't been engineered to close heavy doors.

Answer:	Thanks for the question and sorry to hear that you're feeling force when opening the door, this shouldn't happen when installing correctly. In terms of the opening force, the issue may be that the back check valve is too tight. Please try adjusting this. Alternatively, if the problem persists, please send a photo of your setup and our engineer will be able to give you feedback right away on how to fix the issue.
Question:	Can this opener be installed on the inside of a door that opens outward
Answer:	This product is not suitable for outdoor use

Answer:	Yes it will. I purchased this item because the door at my business would slam with wind. Then it started to slam anytime it went to shut. This has helped to prevent this from happening. I have no issues with my door slamming now.
Question:	The description says residential or light commercial but under that it says not for light weight doors. Which is it
Answer:	I replaced an existing closer but I don't remember what brand it was. Sorry! For my application it was a direct replacement, as I suspect most will be.

Answer:	I can say from experience that this cover does not stay warmer than the standard steering wheel during Minnesota winters. I'm not certain where the person who replied yes lives, but it's probably not anywhere where it actually gets cold outside.

The Ideal SK8730 Heavy Door Closer package includes

• Our well-known and reliable SK1730 pneumatic (air filled) heavy door closer (for heavier storm and screen doors);
• A special wide-base bracket for the door jamb, which allows new holes to be drilled if your existing holes have been damaged or stripped;
• Extra-long screws, for extra strength in holding the door closer in place; and
• Our SK14 wind chain, to protect the door, the glass and the door closer pump from damage if a strong wind catches the door as it is opening.

Additional features

The heavy duty closer features winter and summer settings for when screens are used instead of glass, and features an air by-pass for extra latching power. The closing speed is regulated by an adjustment screw at the end of the tube. Tightening the screw will slow or stop the closing, loosening it will speed up the closing.
