12 best lacrosse goalie heads
Lacrosse goalie heads, also known simply as "goalie heads" or "goalie mesh," are a critical component of a lacrosse goalie's protective gear and equipment. These specialized lacrosse heads are designed to meet the unique needs of goalies in the sport of lacrosse. Here's what you need to know about lacrosse goalie heads:
Design: Lacrosse goalie heads differ significantly from field player heads in terms of design and shape. They are wider and have a deeper pocket to help goalies better catch, control, and direct shots on goal.
Wider Throat: Goalie heads typically have a wider throat or bottom section, which makes it easier for goalies to block shots and control the ball in the head of the stick.
Stiffness: Goalie heads are generally stiffer than field player heads. This stiffness is important for maintaining shape and ensuring that the head can withstand the force of incoming shots without warping or bending.
Larger Surface Area: The larger surface area of a goalie head provides a bigger target to intercept shots, making it easier to save goals.
Stringing: Proper stringing of the goalie head is crucial to create a pocket that offers good control and accuracy when passing and clearing the ball. Goalies may use custom stringing patterns tailored to their preferences.
Materials: Goalie heads are typically made from durable materials like high-impact plastic or composite materials to withstand the rigors of the game and protect the goalie.
NCAA and NFHS Rules: Lacrosse goalie heads must meet specific regulations set by organizations like the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) and NFHS (National Federation of State High School Associations) to be legal for play in sanctioned competitions.
Brands: Several lacrosse equipment manufacturers produce goalie heads, including well-known brands like STX, Brine, Warrior, Maverik, and more. Each brand may offer a variety of models with different features to suit different playing styles.
Customization: Some goalies prefer to customize their goalie heads with team colors, graphics, or personalized designs. Many lacrosse equipment retailers offer customization options.
Maintenance: Goalie heads require regular maintenance, including cleaning and restringing, to ensure they perform at their best during games and practices.
Faceoff Heads: Some goalies use specialized faceoff heads, which have a unique design that allows them to perform faceoff duties in addition to their primary goalie role.
Lacrosse goalie heads are essential for the protection and performance of lacrosse goalies. Choosing the right goalie head depends on individual preferences, playing style, and league regulations. It's important for goalies to select a head that provides a balance of control, durability, and shot-stopping capability to excel in their position.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this a men’s stick |
Answer: | Those refer to the type of mesh that the head is strung with. Our line of goalie mesh is called Grizzly mesh, with Grizzly 1 being our slightly heavier, thicker, and courser first generation, and Grizzly 2 our lighter, thinner, and more responsive current generation. The "x" in Grizzly 1x or Grizzly 2x refers to our semi-hard version of the mesh. Our semi-soft version is called Grizzly 1s or Grizzly 2s. So a Mark 2G with Grizzly 2x is strung with the semi-hard version of our highest-performing goalie mesh. |
