What happens is, the hook side of the Velcro will only adhere to a small part of the loop side that results in a lesser adhesive strength. My teenage son used this for boxing, wrestling and Jiu Jitsu with no teeth, tongue or lip injury. Make sure you buy the correct size, there is an adult and youth version. The youth version was too small for him when he was 13.

Answer:	Yes, I bought this for my 4 yr old daughter. It was too big and we cut it to size with no problem. I cut it it before boiling it and smoothed out the rough edges. My daughter says it very comfortable and hasn't had any problems keeping it in her.
