13 best horse care dewormers
Horse care dewormers are an essential part of maintaining the health and well-being of horses. These products are used to control and prevent parasitic infections in horses, which can have serious health consequences if left untreated. Here are some key points about horse care dewormers:
Types of Dewormers: There are several types of dewormers available for horses, including paste, gel, pellet, and liquid formulations. Each type has its own advantages, and the choice often depends on the preferences of the horse owner and the specific needs of the horse.
Common Worms in Horses: Horses can be infected by various types of internal parasites, including roundworms, tapeworms, strongyles, and bots.Different dewormers are effective against specific types of parasites, so it's important to know what type of worms your horse is at risk for.
Deworming Schedule: Establishing a deworming schedule is crucial for effective parasite control. The frequency of deworming depends on factors such as the horse's age, environment, and individual susceptibility. It is typically recommended to deworm horses every 6-8 weeks, but this can vary.
Fecal Egg Counts: Some horse owners choose to perform fecal egg counts to determine the level of parasite infestation in their horses. This can help tailor the deworming program to the specific needs of each horse and reduce the risk of overusing dewormers.
Resistance Concerns: Overuse and misuse of dewormers can lead to parasite resistance, where the parasites become less responsive to the medication. To combat resistance, it's essential to work with a veterinarian to create a strategic deworming plan.
Rotation of Dewormers: Veterinarians often recommend rotating between different classes of dewormers to target a wider range of parasites and reduce the risk of resistance development.
Dosing and Administration: Proper dosing and administration of dewormers are critical for their effectiveness. Follow the manufacturer's instructions or consult with a veterinarian to ensure accurate dosing based on your horse's weight.
Safety Considerations: Dewormers should be handled and administered with care to minimize the risk of exposure to the person administering them. It's essential to wear protective gloves and follow safety guidelines.
Pregnant Mares and Foals: Deworming protocols may differ for pregnant mares and foals. Consult with a veterinarian for specific recommendations in these cases.
Regular Veterinary Care: Regular veterinary check-ups are crucial for monitoring your horse's overall health, including parasite control. Your veterinarian can help assess the effectiveness of your deworming program and adjust it as needed.
Remember that proper parasite control is essential for the health and well-being of your horse. Developing a deworming plan in consultation with a veterinarian and following best practices for administration and rotation of dewormers is key to keeping your horse free from internal parasites.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be given to swine |
Answer: | Measure your waist size. |
Question: | is this really what is pictured? apple flavor ivermectin |
Answer: | Ok, so these sizes actually refer to your waist size. If you take a tape measure and put it around your waistline, you will know how many inches your waist is. These pants come in waist sizes. I have a 34 which is equivalent to a woman's size 14. |
Question: | What is the expiration date |
Answer: | I love , love these!!! They r soft light and super comfortable... these r my breeches for Florida heat. You will not be disappointed! |
Question: | Is this for topical use |
Answer: | No but if you cut holes into them a belt fits perfectly through the lining where the strings are. I have a couple pairs and I just cut the strings out and weave a belt through. It works phenomenally! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it work for tapeworms in cats |
Answer: | I am not a vet but know folks who give to hooved livestock. I suspect dosage would be less for smaller stock. Perhaps, consult with someone raising swine. |
Question: | How would I go about using this on chicks? I’ve seen others say they’ve done it. Please help |
Answer: | Yes 1.87% ivermectin paste. |
Question: | Is this stronger than the Safe Guard liquid goat dewormer that I already purchased |
Answer: | The last i ordered had a date 2 years after the purchase date. If you keep it at room temp or refrigerated it should last 5 years unopened (says my vet). |
Question: | I need fenbendazole for my Malamutes but the canine version is cost prohibitive based on their weight of 140lbs. Can I use this instead |
Answer: | It's measured in an oral dispenser for ingestion but I used it topically. Anything that can be ingested is safe for topical use. It is a thick gel like substance so it will pack well in a wound. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Did you sell this product on packages of 3 or 5 or 12 like others |
Answer: | According to the label this product does not kill tapeworms. I don't think it's meant for cats either, probably better to use a wormer made for just for cats rather than one for horses. |
Question: | Is this a one month supply for one horse |
Answer: | Young chicks shouldn't need to be dewormed. I wouldn't deworm under 3 months old unless I was 100% sure they needed it. |
Question: | Does this work on botfly larvae |
Answer: | This Safe Guard product is Fenbendazole 25 gram paste at 10%. I have used this on my goats in the past. I made sure I rotated my wormers every other month with ivermectin just like I do for my horse. I have had great results with this product. |
Question: | Does this product have some sort of safety seal on it |
Answer: | I use this on my Italian Greyhounds - from puppies to old age. "Pancur or fenbendazole" This was recommended to me by an old Vet - years ago! You can not over dose! Unless you give enough for over 200 pounds per 10 pound dog wt. So one of the smaller single horse wormers will last for 10 Italian Greyhounds which are an average 10 pounds body wt. each. Also a inject-able Ivermictin 50ml bottle, you can use on dogs. The AKC Gazette mag. gave out a formula. I believe it was one unite per 100 units. Each cc or ml is 100 unites. Make sure the strength of this drug is adjusted to units per pound of pet wt. The injectables come in 1% and the paste is 1.87%. Use a insulin syringe to draw up the dose. Then take the nettle off and apply down the spine starting with the neck. I apply just to the side of the spine though. Its an extra precaution. Make sure it gets to the skin and not only on the hair as you will not get the medicine to the dog to worm. This drug is the working drug in Heart Gard for dogs. The only difference is the company does the dosing by having you buy the average wt of your dog. If you only know the average wt of your dog then give less - to get a safety zone. This drug works by killing parasites by working on its nerves central system. So backing off the amount of drug will not harm the pet. I also use the Merck manual for Veterinarians. You can buy that on e-bay. Just an FYI tape worms do not have a central nerves system. Pancur or fenbendazole kill tape worms as they are a segment worm without nerves. You can find these wormers at a Agway/Blue Seal or online as paste wormers. Ivermectin comes in the paste form for horses. Now if you see your dog acting a little wobbly it is because you gave it a little too much. So the next time you give it less. Ivermectin can be dangerous if you over dose too much! Better to back off. Read the directions on the package how much per/pound/per'body wt. As this drug is given by wt. alone not by species. See links as follows: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivermectin / This one is info for humans = https://www.drugs.com/dosage/ivermectin.html / This one has tons of info for dogs = http://www.thedogplace.org/parasites/dog-wormers-dosage-chart_lanting-09.asp / Online Merck manual (you will need a med. dictionary find online) = http://www.merckvetmanual.com/mvm/index.html / http://www.petmd.com/dog/conditions#h-diseases / Breaking down the Veterinary Medical Terminology. http://www.vspn.org/Library/Misc/VSPN_M02371.htm / Copy-ed from Wikipedia, "Dogs with defects in the P-glycoprotein gene (MDR1), often collie-like herding dogs, can be severely poisoned by ivermectin." Hope this gives you a great start in keeping your dog healthy!! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it have smell |
Answer: | no |
Question: | How much would I give a 115 lb rottweiler |
Answer: | Wormers usually last 8 weeks. |
Question: | Is this a true paste consistency? Or is it more of a gel |
Answer: | Even if your horse is on a daily dewormer, you may find it necessary, on occasion, to use an additional purge deworming product to cover “exposure gaps.” For example, pyrantel tartrate is not effective against botfly larvae or tapeworms (cestodes). If your horse is exposed to these parasites, you’ll need to treat him with an effective botfly and cestocidal product as described in labeling for those products |
Question: | Can the ivermectin be used on humans |
Answer: | Yes, it has a plastic seal on the outside of the container. You have to remove it to open it |

Answer: | Soft paste - very smooth- I actually have used this for mange in wild squirrels so I’ve touched it a lot - I apply it to shelled pecans (that seems to be their favorite) and it stays on and doesn’t feel gritty to the touch |
Question: | Is this the same as buying 5 single tubes or does powerpac have some other ingredients beyond single tubes of panacur by merck |
Answer: | Ivermectin is an extract from soils they discovered in Japan in the 1970s. Using it on humans is mostly What they’ve done with it in the last 40 years. They mix it with a bunch of chemicals to pour on to Cattle so it’s soaks in and kills parasites , But they’ve used it around the world for 40 years to cure all sorts of human parasitic diseases as well just without the cattle additives so don’t get it off your shelf from a local farm supply but they do make people - safe versions The cure Covid |

User questions & answers
Question: | What medicine does this contain? The writing is too small to read |
Answer: | 5 tubes each one 57 gm |
Question: | Is there a difference between these and the powerpac of five...other than this is three |
Answer: | This is not the same as the powerpac of 5 tubes, which states comes as such. This tube states "will deworm two 1250lb horses. Not the same at all Not happy. Returning. |
Question: | what size are these tubes, 25 or 57 gram |
Answer: | No, the paste does not smell. |
Question: | What worms does it treat |
Answer: | I’ve been using it for many years on my dogs. Do not go to the vet as they will overcharge you for this very same stuff. For your Rottweiler I would give the amount equal to medium green pea or large green pea. I give a small dab to my 50 Pound Catahoula and a medium dab the size a bigger pea to my 90 lbs Rottweiler/Lab. It works and will cure heart worms if used with other medication you can research about on the interweb. This will save you a ton of money and it’s usually cheaper at tractor supply. |
