I will try to explain a little more for you basically First there is the video game that you purchase. These are called starter packs. There is the original infinity, and Infinity 2.0. When you purchase the starter pack you have to make sure you buy the one for the correct console(xbox 360, xbox one, ps3, ps4, wii, wii u). When you buy the starer pack you will get the Disc containing the game some infinity characters, and the base on which you place the characters to make them appear in game. Disney Infinity 1 characters are playable in both Infinity 1 and infinity 2.0. the Disney Infinity 2.0 characters are not playable in the older version of the game. Whenever you want to play as one of you figures/toys in the game you simply place it on a base(comes with the starter pack you had to buy) and they will appear in the video game. Now for the important part about how this works. There is basically two ways to play Disney Infinity games.1st is like a story mode, 2nd is Toy box. In order to play story mode you need some crystal like objects (one comes with the starter pack). There are only a few packs that include the crystal object they are called play sets. like the Cars pack that has McQueen and Holly or the Play set that has the lone ranger characters. The play sets allow you to play a story within that "world". so if you are playing the Cars play set you are playing a story that takes place in radiator springs. There is an important rule to know when playing Play sets only characters that actually exist within that world are allowed to play in that game. so if you are playing the cars set Infinity will not let you place Wreck it Ralph on the base. If you do the game will display a message to place a different character on the base. Just so you know not all the characters have a play set to play in for example Ralph and vanellope from this pack right here have no play set. These characters can only play in the Toy box mode. Toy box mode is basically suppose to be like playing with you toy box growing up. In Toy box mode all characters can be mixed together. The only difference is now there is no build story for you characters. You can either start with a flat blank world or with some of the pre built worlds. and you can fill them in with all kinds of objects and characters. the more you play the more items you unlock to you in the toy box. The players built and play their own world using their imagination. Disney also has a list of some of the best built toy boxes from other players which you can download and play. Now about those disc you see in this pack and that can be bought in booster packs. Those are also place on the base. There are different kinds of discs (toy, customize, abilities) but none of them are really needed. All the discs are for toy box mode only. The Toy disc make new objects appear in the game like Mulan's horse so you can ride it around or a blaster gun from the stitch movie, even Dumbo himself to get on and fly around. Customize discs change the way the world looks in the toy box you are playing in. An example the game comes with Pirates of the Caribbean themed items but no sugar rush like theme form wrek it ralph. I believe one of the disc included in this pack when placed on the base will change the world theme to sugar rush. The last kind of disc is abilities when placed on the base the give the character abilities like new attacks or auto health regen.I hope that answers your questions. One last thing about the play sets (story mode crystal thing) the play sets from the original Disney Infinity will not work on the newer Disney Infinity 2.0. The character will be not the story mode. so If you buy the cars playset you can play as McQueen in Infinity 2.0 but you can't play his story mode.
