9 best value survival knife

A value survival knife, often associated with tactical knives, personal defense, hunting, fishing, sports, and the outdoors, is a versatile and durable tool designed for a wide range of outdoor and emergency situations. These knives are known for their practicality, reliability, and affordability. Here are some key characteristics and considerations for value survival knives:

  1. Blade Material: Value survival knives often have blades made from stainless steel or high-carbon steel. Stainless steel is resistant to corrosion, while high-carbon steel offers excellent edge retention and durability.

  2. Blade Shape: The blade shape can vary, but popular choices include drop point, tanto, and clip point designs. The choice of blade shape can affect the knife's versatility for different tasks.

  3. Full Tang Construction: Value survival knives typically feature full tang construction, where the blade extends through the handle. This design provides strength and stability, making the knife suitable for heavy-duty tasks.

  4. Handle Material: Handles are commonly made from materials like rubber, G-10, or textured plastics to provide a secure grip, even in wet conditions. Some models also incorporate ergonomic designs for added comfort during extended use.

  5. Serrated Edge: Some value survival knives include a partially serrated edge, which can be useful for cutting through tough materials like rope or wood.

  6. Sheath: A durable and secure sheath is essential for safe storage and carrying. Many value survival knives come with a sheath that can be attached to a belt or gear for easy access.

  7. Size: Survival knives come in various sizes, from compact options for everyday carry to larger models suitable for camping and outdoor adventures. The choice depends on your specific needs.

  8. Price: Value survival knives are known for their affordability while still providing essential features and functionality. They are a cost-effective option for those on a budget.

  9. Multipurpose Use: These knives are versatile and can be used for a wide range of tasks, including cutting, chopping, prying, and self-defense in emergency situations.

  10. Maintenance: Proper maintenance, such as regular sharpening and cleaning, is essential to ensure the knife remains in good working condition over time.

When choosing a value survival knife, it's essential to consider your intended use and the specific features that matter most to you. Additionally, you may want to read reviews and seek recommendations from fellow outdoor enthusiasts to find a knife that suits your needs and budget. Always follow safety guidelines when handling and using knives, especially in survival or emergency situations.

User questions & answers

Question: Does Gerber sell a replacement ferro rod for this knife
Answer: I'm not sure. I bought an extra flint on attachable lanyard. Plus its allot cheaper that way.. Also Knife work great on the other flint. I don't use the one with it. Thats my emergency use only. Hopefully I never need it!
Question: Can this be attached to a backpack shoulder strap
Answer: Yes if you have the proper molle strap. It is designed to be strapped to your belt on waist vertically or horizontally. Very good knife for the price
Question: Can this hook onto a belt
Answer: Yes. Vertically or Horizontally on your belt.
Question: What kind of steel is used in the blade
Answer: Gerber products use a 100% high-grade stainless steel. Stainless steel is not completely resistant to rust but rather is corrosion resistant to rust. Corrosion can occur in the absence of proper maintenance. Your Gerber product should be cleaned, dried and re-oiled periodically to inhibit rust and corrosion; this is especially true in a damp or marine environment. If your Gerber product comes in contact with any substance that you are uncertain about, it is always a good idea to wash your blade off with tap water, dry it and apply a light coat of oil. If your Gerber product comes into contact with saltwater you must flush it with tap water immediately after use and coat it with good quality lightweight oil. Salt water is extremely corrosive and will attack and destroy any type of steel.

User questions & answers

Question: welded tang or full through tang
Answer: The blade thickness is 3/16 inch.
Question: approximately, how long is the blade on this knife
Answer: Its just a false edge.
Question: What is the blade thickness
Answer: I don't recall how I received it and how it was packed, but the knife is the same brand that I had when I was in the service in the 70's. It is a tough knife, it is a sharp knife that holds it's edge. It is not as pretty as those TV survivalist hawk but it "gits er done".
Question: Is the top edge sharp
Answer: In the 1960s and 70s this knife was manufactured by a couple of companies, many carry a Camillus mark. The month and year are stamped on the side of the pommel. Mine says 3 1967. AFAIK this was standard regardless of the maker. The knife was standard issue to helicopter Marine, Army and Navy Pilots that trained at Hunter Army Air Field, along with a strobe light and flare pen. Many of our training flights were over water and the many fine marshy and swampy areas around Savannah and up to Paris Island. I very much doubt that any consideration was given to whether a knife marked Ontario or Camillus would betray the national identity of men wearing flight suits with subdued insignia, GI black leather boots and carrying a S&W .38 revolver.
Question: So is this a true "Ontario" brand knife? It comes in Ontario Knife Company packaging
Answer: Yes and no. The tang extends to the handle, but is reduced to a rat tail tang (like the tang in most Moraknife's). I'm not saying that's a bad thing. The Morakniv Bushman Black has a rat tail tang and I've put that knife through bushcraft torture (crafting, lashings, digging, batoning firewood, skinning animals, thatching roofs, wood carving, cutting through heavy brush, making rope, sparking ferro rods with its factory cut 90° spine and making thousands of fires with it as well as countless other chores) and it's still an amazing knife. After all of that, you wouldn't believe it has a rat tail tang (or even care for that matter). However, if its really bugging you, consider the standard bastard mill file. It has a tapered tang (similar to a rat tail tang) and holds up well under extreme conditions. It even makes a great blank to make a strong, sturdy knife out of it. Sincerely, SurvivalGeek (YouTube)
Question: Is this knife supposed to have a tang stamp? Mine has no markings anywhere on the knife or sheath indicating it's an Ontario Knife
Answer: classic "raittail" tang, which is a full tang in terms of length (all the way to the pommel cap). Carried this on my LBE for years, and the only knife ever officially issues in US ARMY SF between 1989-95. It's a good tool, tough, you can reliably lever a mine if you need to ;)
Question: Does this knife have a hollow handle
Answer: The Megapro 151SS 15-In-1 Stainless bits (tips) are not magnetic.
Question: is this knife full tang
Answer: The bits are not stainless steel. They are the same bits that you'd get in the regular driver. The only thing that is stainless is the driver shaft. I was a little disappointed but kept it because the bits in my old 1990's driver from the were rusted from being used in the rain. I treated the new bits with a corrosion block so they won't rust. I'd say save a few bucks and get the regular driver.

User questions & answers

Question: What are the dimensions
Answer: The holes are lashing points and for safety cord attachment. https://cudeman.com/en/producto/sku-120-mk-2/
Question: Are these handle scales clued as well as screwed on? Want to know if I have to worry about loosening
Answer: No way to tell just by looking at it, you'd really have to take it apart to truly verify the construction method. There's no visible tang end on the pommel, so I assume the pommel hole is a blind threaded hole, but that still doesn't ansewer whether or not the tang is integral to the blade or a welded on tang. But the knife appears and feels very solidly built,.but I'm really not up for trying to disassemble my knife to confirm construction. I know this isn't the ansewer your looking for, but it's the only one I have. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
Question: What is the hole in the blade for
Answer: 7 inches

User questions & answers

Question: if this knife is not liked when purchased what are the return details
Answer: It’s a mora knife. You will like it.
Question: Is the built in sharpening stone a good, usable piece of equipment
Answer: If you want solid sharpening system that won't break the bank, buy a lansky blade medic from Amazon for under $10. It's pocket size and carbide and ceramic sharpening methods set to a 30 degree angle to keep your field knife in top shape (as well as a ceramic stone for honing and a flip out diamond file for serrated blades). I have three lansky blade medics and use them on all my Moraknives, Benchmades, Kershaws, and my Leathermans. The are awesome and a must to have. As far as rough field options for sharpening knives, there are several options available: smooth rocks in a creek bed, concrete driveway/road, cinder blocks, metal files, cardboard (when a leather Strop isn't available), roughly ceramic ring on bottom of coffee cups and plates/bowls, flat glass edge on top edge of vehicle window, and so many other methods that can be found on Google/YouTube. The rough diamond file on the sheath is meant to shape the blade when it is to dull to Strop in the field. Wear a real leather belt and use the backside of the belt to Strop the blade after using the rough diamond file on the sheath. Cardboard can be used in place of a leather belt/leather Strop to Strop the blade (stroping the blade removes the metal burs built up on the edge of the blade that cause the blade to be dull; it is common to see an old fashioned barber Strop a straight razor before he/she shaves your face).
Question: Is upgraded sheath (fire/ sharpening stone) worth the money
Answer: Sharpening stone is extremely rough, scratch's everything. All my sharpeners have been smooth. Great idea to have it attached to carrying case but feel very uncomfortabe using such a rough sharpener, especially with the marks it left in the black finish of the knife when I tried it out. Not a fan of the Plastic. Knife does come out easy enough. Knife it's self I like, disappointed in rest of it, especially stupid cheap clips that attach to it, finally got the one in ...now can't get it off. Comes with no instructions, which would be helpful since you can't put fire starter in either way...one way it falls out, teeth of fastener to fire starter ... Hope they don't give out, doesn't feel secure.
Question: Is this a full tang knife
Answer: If you want a full tang Morakniv you'll want to check out the relatively new (2016) Garberg here on Amazon. Comes with a leather sheath or multimount sheath system. Regardless, you'll be hard pressed to find a better rock solid value than any Mora, full tang or 3/4.

Product features

Steel

The high carbon steel 1/8-inch (3.2 mm) thick blade is extremely sharp, durable, and is hardened to HRC 56-58 to better withstand stress on the blade when batoning. The black coating helps protects against corrosion. For further corrosion resistance, oil carbon blades after each use.

Scandi Grind

The Bushcraft Survival has a Scandi grind which prevents the knife from slipping off easily, bites into the surface without getting stuck, are razor sharp and stay sharp for a long time. The blade is relatively thin making it easier to carve yet robust enough for batoning and other demanding outdoor activities.

Sheath

The Bushcraft Survival sheath has an integrated diamond sharpener and holds an included Morakniv Fire Starter. It also comes with a removable belt loop and belt clip that safely and securely hold your knife in place.

Integrated Fire Starter

The included Morakniv Fire Starter locks securely into the durable plastic clamps on the Survival Sheath and is conveniently accessible when you need it.

Batoning

Carving

The Bushcraft Survival is the ultimate carving tool with its razor sharp edge and balanced handling characteristics. It will allow you to precisely prep tinder, create feather sticks, carve shelter stakes, and process wood for various uses like collecting water or creating camp tools.

Feather Sticks

A feather stick will help the Bushcrafter with fire starting and is essential when starting a fire with damp wood or without tinder. To create the best performing feather stick you need a knife like the Bushcraft Survival that has a razor sharp edge, is lightweight, balanced, and easy to use.

Fire Starting

By pulling the specially ground spine of the knife slowly and forcefully down against the included fire starter, you can easily light dry grass, leaves, paper, bark and even your favorite gas grill or stove.

Question: exactly what type of steel is the blade made from
Answer: This product is made in China but it is not true that all their products are made there. I have a Gerber mini covert auto and it is definitely made in USA.
Question: Where is this manufactured
Answer: Yes it is
Question: is this knife full tang
Answer: I can't comment on the gator Jr, but this one is very sturdy. I've chopped trees (4" - 5") down without any trouble from the blade. The saw on the other side works well too. I'd buy it again.

User questions & answers

Question: Where is this made
Answer: JTolle, Ka-Bar knives are made in Olean, NY by Cutco cutlery. My grandfather used to run the machine that ground the blades. But still american made is hard to find.
Question: How thick is the blade spine
Answer: The spine of the blade is, 3/16” inch thick.
Question: Will this fit in a ka bar sheath
Answer: Yes, just depends on the length of your sheath. Basically if your sheath is the same length of your blade, it will fit
Question: How long is the blade? Sorry, didn't see it listed
Answer: The blade is 5 7/16 inches long. The handle is 5 1/16 inches long. Total knife length, 10 1/2 inches At least by my tape measure. I didn't check it with a caliper. XD
Question: How big is it when you roll it up
Answer: well the width is obviously the same as when it is rolled out (22"), BUT when rolled up the diameter is about 6" ... which is not convenient for backpacking.
Question: Would this work for a chaise lounge? A chaise cushion is not enough back support for me
Answer: It is more like a cushion for the ground. I don't think that it is rigid enough for support. If you try it make sure that it is the length and width that you need. The short one is just big enough for your body and head.
