User questions & answers
Question: | Is this cord water resistant such that it can hang outdoors for years |
Answer: | I've not had to use this cord in an application with prolonged constant exposure to the elements. As it is Nylon, I can guess that it's water resistance would be good for years but I cannot attest to the UV resistance and resultant strength retention/reduction over time. On a separate note, the cord stretches under load when wet so depending on what you are hanging/tying and how, it may droop or come loose. |
Question: | How long of a rope would I need to make a 6ft kinda bracelet/leash |
Answer: | You need 175' to make a 6' leash with a 1' handle |
Question: | You have listed that the outer sheath is nylon, but don’t state what the inner strands are made out of. Are they nylon, or polyester |
Answer: | From the thousands of feet i have bought from them it is nylon strands |
Question: | would this rope be good for making a trellis for Hop Vines |
Answer: | Not sure what trellis or hop Vines but is Paracord so it's strong but it stretches under tension |

User questions & answers
Question: | I was wondering if the cord is hollow? I'm looking to modify my computer cables and was just wondering if this might work |
Answer: | No, it's solid core. It sounds as though you might be thinking of something like a flexible hollow fabric stuff type tube. Not aware of something like that. That said, such a thing might exist. However if it can be more rigid, plastic tubing comes in sizes from fish tank diameter to 1, 2 or more inches in diameter. Milker tubing comes to mind. Think aquarium supply store or hardware store. Hope that helps. Or use the cord to tie those darn cables together. ;-) |
Question: | Can it be used to replace shock cord in tent poles |
Answer: | I would say yes. 1/8 should be good on most poles especially if that is the thickness of the current cord. It is good stuff. I used it for some other camping and hunting gear and it has held up well to the elements. |
Question: | Can anyone tell me how much this will stretch? i.e. would 50' stretch to 60' or 70'? Thanks in advance |
Answer: | this has quite a bit if stretch. I cant say for cretin, its all used up. I replaced 3 very long tent poles with it. |
Question: | Is this as stretchy as bungee cord |
Answer: | I have never used bungee cord that thin - it has more 'recoil' or tension than the normal elastic that you would put in the bottom of a jacket. Worked great as a tensioner for my folding cloth table. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will any of these glow brightly (fluorescent) under blacklight? i would like to try some for a halloween decoration that's why i'm asking |
Answer: | I don't have a black light to try that out. Neat idea though. I have a couple of the neon colors , lime green, pink and purple, and orange they are really bright even in low light conditions. I hope your black light idea works out. |
Question: | Are any of these colors reflective? I need some for guy lines and the off chance I can't find my bear bag in the middle of the night... thanks |
Answer: | No. You need to look at colors specifically labelled as reflective. Also, if your goal is to find something in the dark I would consider glow in the dark paracord vs reflective. |
Question: | I'm planning to store this with my emergency supplies, but space is tight. How big are the bundles |
Answer: | They are not big at all, fits easily in my emergency pack and mine is overflowing lol, it is great paracord also |
Question: | Can the 100ft one fit good in a backpack |
Answer: | It's paracord, it can fit anywhere you put it, unless you have a really, really, really, really small backpack. The 100' bundle is looped, 10.25" long x 4" wide. And because it's paracord, not a solid brick, you can roll it up into the size of a pair of socks. You can literally fold it in half and it will fit in your back pocket. And this stuff happens to be good quality, I have purchased several different colors and sizes, and actually have the 100' black paracord in a small pouch on my bug out bag. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can anyone confirm that the “reflective & glow in the dark black” does actually have both reflective and glow in the dark strands |
Answer: | Yes it’s both reflective and glow in the dark......... side benefit it’s almost neon when hit with uv light |
Question: | Is it military-grade |
Answer: | Not quite sure what peoples obsession with military grade is. Look at the load ratings and see if it meets your needs. Paracord is listed by load ratings 95, 225, 325, 550, 750, 1100. Those are lbs (pound) ratings. Interestingly the thickness of 325-750 is virtually identical (around 4mm), they just use a different combination of strand thickness and total strands. 1100 goes to closer to 7mm thickness. |
Question: | What is the width |
Answer: | I'm unsure which width you mean. Because I tend to use a lot of cord I like the 4.5mm. That way I can make many different things or use it many different ways. |
Question: | What is it's size / diameter |
Answer: | The description says, "4mm", which equates to "0.1575 inches". Which is slightly smaller than the size of a pencil, which is about 6mm or 0.2362 inches. It's like the size of cordage that is used to make those knotted bracelets. |

User questions & answers
Question: | what size buckles fit this cord |
Answer: | I've been using 5/8" buckles for survival bracelets. You could use 1 size smaller O.K. |
Question: | Made in China |
Answer: | It is manufactured in the US |
Question: | can i use this for climbing |
Answer: | Not all cord that is labeled "550 cord" is true 550 cord. As one person mentioned, before, 550 is referring to the cords break strength of 550 pounds. I personally have gotten so much cord from this distributor, and I am confident that it is strong enough to climb with; however, I do recall ordering "olive green" I believe it was, and that color was different. The outer strands melted much much quicker than the inner strands. And it was very stiff, and not to reassuring. So take it with a grain of salt, considering that some colors may not meet that 550 pound break strength. |
Question: | Is there a place where I can view all the color options on one page |
Answer: | I used Paracord Planet's actual website to view colors, paracordplanet.com. They categorize them by cord type (e.g. 550 nylon, 550 mil-spec, 95 paracord, etc.) and then all the colors of that type are on one long page under their respective color type (e.g. camo, neon, reflective, etc). I opened one tab per color, if I liked it, then went through and eliminated tabs until I found the one I wanted the most for the project. It was still a little cumbersome but easier to manage than the color selection on Amazon. I still ordered the cord through Amazon, though, for quicker shipping. |

User questions & answers
Question: | if you cut it will it unravel |
Answer: | THe answer is YES, it will unravel if you don't melt the ends. Just melting the ends will probably work, but often you'll get kind of a flared or mushroom head - that's even if you use a "hot knife" like they'd have at REI or Home Depot. For a rope with a core and a sheath, best way is to handle cutting it is to milk out a short amount of the core by pulling back on the sheath. Then cut off just a little of the core (1/8" is plenty). THen while keeping the core out and the sheath held back, melt the ends of the core, and immediately after coming off the heat grab up the length of the cord and pull back down on the sheath so that you stretch the sheath over the newly melted end of the core. Then melt the outsides of the sheath back to the end of the melted sheath that's inside the core. I find that using the bottom of the lighter I'm using and flattening down the end of the new melt while rotating the cord avoids the flare or mushroom. |
Question: | I need to so some work on a 14' roof and need to attach to a harness for safety. Would this rope work |
Answer: | NOT A GOOD IDEA DUDE! Paracord was designed to be used for parachutes (I believe that's where the name comes from). Think about the load bearing - MANY strands supporting the very softened load of your body weight, not required to hold full body weight. I think this is about 4mm, where the smallest LEAD (aka, taking DYNAMIC loads, where the spec you should be worried about is Kn (kilonewtons) that is a moving, shock loading force) ropes I know of MAY be 8, but I know 9mm ropes are available. Me, being larger than the average climber, prefer to go 10 or 11mm, though the prior is more readily found. Should you try the parachord for a dynamic fall, depending on the "load factor" (way too much typing, you'll have to look it up), I think you'd make the Darwin Awards list. That being said, I've heard paracord marketed in some places as an emergency rappel option. THat's an awful thin rope to be trusting your life to (although cordage for anchors is much stronger, it doesn't stretch, so it would NOT be good to use in a fall situation. Anchor, yes, falls, no. Lastly, if you're asking this question about using this as an anchor rope, I'd also suggest you get a book or consult someone on how to set up the anchor you'll be trusting your life to. |
Question: | How easy is it on the hands? Thinking of using this to wrap a homemade lightsaber handle and want to know if it'll be too rough |
Answer: | I don't believe it to be rough on the hands at all. I've wrapped large flashlights, grips on my motorcycle, etc. and haven't had an issue. I would recommend that if you are going to wrap a smooth handle, first wrap with tape (I use the "spongy" type medical tape) then wrap it with your paracord. This will prevent the paracord from slipping. |
Question: | Would you mind posting what spec this "Mil Spec Commercial paracord" meets |
Answer: | This is weasel-wording on the part of ParaCord Planet...there is no official designation of "Mil Spec Commercial." True MIL-C-5040H paracord would have a colored load-bearing core strand, a colored marker strand signifying the MIL-C-5040H manufacturer...an accountability marker. Guaranteed, ParaCord Planet would not be able to produce a MIL-C-5040H factory certificate of conformance for military grade 550 cord without the marker. Amazon should bust their chops for misleading advertising. I'm a frequent ParaCord Planet customer but I don't condone this practice of charging mil spec prices for materials which don't meet the MIL-C-5040H requirement. Commercial customers who actually need MIL-C-5040H cord can easily find Amazon resellers who sell the real McCoy. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the diameter of the cord |
Answer: | 5/32 5 strand |
Question: | IS this strechy? Thanks |
Answer: | I haven't found it to stretch at all Joan - even when the cord is wet. Admittedly I have not placed it under significant loads to try to stretch it but in ordinary use it has met my needs. |
Question: | What is the maximum weight that it can support? Can I use it as a hammock rope |
Answer: | Remember that knots reduce the breaking strength of any rope, so poorly tied cords could easily go to a breaking strength below body weight. I'm sure you could do it, but I prefer flat nylon straps for hammock hanging. |
Question: | Is the 100' length one piece or two |
Answer: | It was 100' in one piece |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can i use this cord to make the simple back packs |
Answer: | Too thin to make an entire backpack. The cord is about the diameter of a round boot lace, or half the diameter of a standard pencil. It works good for making belts (I made a belt using 10-strands woven, key fob/chain, and zipper pulls. |
Question: | Would this be good to use as bow and stern tiedowns for cartop carried kayaks |
Answer: | Probably if you used a fishtail braid and a strong carabiner, if you used a single line I'd be really cautious it may stretch. Hope that helps |
Question: | Can I use this to make a raft |
Answer: | Only if you have a MacGuyver special edition swiss army knife |
Question: | Will this hold up in long term year around outdoor use |
Answer: | Ive used nylon parachute cord for years. I believe it will last years but use your head, what are you using it for. Forget about 500# breaking strength the dia. is to small to use it for climbing etc. |

User questions & answers
Question: | good to use as shoelaces? ties tight & stays tight/tied? thanks amazon community |
Answer: | No, I would not think this would be good for shoelaces. Too slippery. It will knot but I don't think it would hold a bow tie well. |
Question: | I have a privacy fence on my porch. Will this paracord fit thru the eyelets? Will it stand up against hurricane winds in Florida |
Answer: | A to the eyelets, it depends on how large they are. Type 3 cord (aka 550) is 4mm approx in diameter (5/32 in). So any eyelet larger than say 6mm would work. The hurricane question is a bit more problematic. The wind will not directly over load the cord, but it will whip it around, which might cause it to abrade and eventually break. |
Question: | This item comes up as lowest price at $2.49 - $9.99. Where's the $2.49 one |
Answer: | The price is determined by the length you choose. |
Question: | Could I make a 12x12 net with a 300 foot roll, or should I go 1000 feet |
Answer: | For a 2 ft leash I used 32ft of cord using the cobra stitch |
