Answer: | This is a clear view spotting scope. It does not have a ranging feature in the reticle. |
Question: | does this scope come with a cover |
Answer: | Yes. Mine came with plastic lens covers and a neoprene cover. The neoprene cover limits the rotation of the scope a little but it's worth it for the protection it offers. It also has neoprene covers at each end that quickly pop off when you want to use the scope. They use a elastic type cords to hold them in place and then they hang down when removed and easily go back on. |
Question: | What is the closest distancance in which it can focus |
Answer: | I’ve recorded video on this from about 20 feet away |

Product features
HCD (Horizontal Component Distance)
HCD range display is intended to be the primary mode. The yardage number displayed is the critical horizontal component distance is corrected for shot angle and needs no extra user input. Use the HCD range mode in the following situations:
•Rifle shooting on level ground at any range.
•Rifle shooting out to ranges of 400 yards with moderate slopes (15 to 30 degrees) or out to ranges of 800 yards with mild slopes (less than 15 degrees).
•For all archery shooting.
Shooters simply use the appropriate level ground bullet drop and wind adjustment for the range displayed and shoot. Archers use the appropriate level ground sight pin for the range displayed and shoot.
LOS (Line of Sight)
LOS mode is intended for rifle shooters who are using slope correcting ballistic drop data cards, ballistic apps, or PDAs with ballistic programs and are shooting at distances beyond 500 yards and slopes greater than 15 degrees. Most shooters and archers will not need the LOS mode. The range number displayed in LOS mode is the actual line of sight range with no ballistic correction for slope.
Most of the commonly used ballistic devices can provide independent slope correction for bullet drop data and require actual line of sight range input. Using the LOS range when calculating bullet wind drifts under these steep slope/long range conditions will provide a higher degree of accuracy than using the HCD range. To use, simply input the LOS range number into the device or use the LOS range when referencing ballistic drop cards with slope correction.
Scan Feature
The Scan feature can be used to range moving targets or help range smaller targets on uniform backgrounds in either HCD or LOS modes.
Once powered up, press and hold the Measure button and scan laser back and forth, watching for changes in the yardage number as crosshairs move across the target object. A blinking 'S' display indicates Scan Ranging is activated.

User questions & answers
Question: | How close is close focus- can you ID a butterfly in your hand |
Answer: | The close-focus is 16.4 feet according to the Vortex website (and, based on some of the other answers, it's sad that they are clueless to the advantages of monocs/binocs for close-viewing; their loss). Good question. Thanks, shiftstick. (PS Most of my binocs are about 5 foot close-focus range, so this is a little on the long side, for sure). Bye now. |
Question: | Hi all, I've read many reviews, and the specs...but am still unclear about what the "close focus" is. 1 foot? 10 feet? thanks |
Answer: | Close focus is 25 feet, a little fuzzy at 20 ft. I use mine to spot bullet holes in a target when shooting with iron sights at 50 yards. Works great! |
Question: | how close is close focus |
Answer: | I am estimating it to be about 15 feet. Didn't find this out until after I bought it and started using it. Would have really liked something that was more like 5 to 6 feet, or closer. |
Question: | I have heard that 8x is easier to hold steady than 10x, but the 8x25 is only 4.2in long. Does this not also hinder holding steady |
Answer: | It's A LOT easier to hold steady a 8X than a 10x...not always you are going to be calm enough to hold steady a 10x...Steadiness it's crucial. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How useful is the manual |
Answer: | I guess its fine as manuals go. Its in English so that's a plus. It also is good if you need to start a fire or need something to read when your on the john, lots of versatility i guess. |
Question: | will it attach to a tripod or camera stick |
Answer: | Yes it will attach to a tripod, a camera stick and a rifle, see the comments section under this item at the Vortex site (www.vortexoptics.com).It may take a little work, but it's easy to make it fit a tripod and the buffer tube of an AR-15.LF |
Question: | have a belt clip |
Answer: | Yeah, a huge metal belt clip. and comes with a pouch as well. both are not very useful. But the mono itself and the R/T are awesome! |
Question: | Is this a range finder? Thank you |
Answer: | Yes, it does contain a range finder. It is an optical rangefinder based on a graduated reticle. It is not an electronic rangefinder where you press a button and get a number. To use the Vortex R/T (Ranging/Tactical), you need to know the approximate height of the object. That info, combined with the built-in reticle will give you the distance. An internet image search will give you a picture of the reticle, and several sites have info on how to use it. As an example, if a human (2 meters tall) viewed through the scope was 3 hash marks high (milliradians) then the distance would be 2 meters X 1000 / 3 (hash marks) = 666.6 meters (give or take). As a side note, I really enjoy mine, goes with me often on hikes. Well built and compact. |

R/T Ranging Reticle
Hashmarked ranging reticle using mrad based subtension lines for ranging, holdover, and windage corrections. Quick-ranging silhouettes. The R/T ranging reticle is based on a form of angular measurement called the milliradian (mrad for short). These angular measurements allow a user to calculate ranges when comparing the reticle to objects of known dimension. The key to effective ranging using this reticle is knowing common objects in your vicinity and their measurements.
Adjusting the Focus
Designed for quick single-handed operation, simply place the thumb and forefinger on the focus wheel and turn to move lens forward or backward.
• Top focus wheel adjusts the reticle.
• Bottom focus wheel adjusts the image.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this scope really weight 2.6 pounds |
Answer: | I didn't really weight it as itself but it didn't add much weight to my gun. My Remington 700 with heavy barrel was heavy already. |
Question: | Would this work on a ruger 308 precision rifle? Model |
Answer: | I dont see why not. You will need high rise scope mounts though. I have it on a Ruger American 30.06. |
Question: | Does this have an illuminated reticle |
Answer: | It has a illuminated center dot that lights up red. Very nice to have. I've had scopes that had the whole reticle light up and it was way too much goin on in the scope and it would drain the battery way too fast. The center dot is simple effective and great on the battery. Plus with the crosshairs you won't even need the dot about 90% of the time. |
Question: | How is the glass? Sight clarity? Especially when you put it at |
Answer: | Excellent for the price. Not going to compare to my Razor HD in glass quality or features, but $200 vs $2500, it's unbeatable value and warranty. I have at least 7 crossfires of different sizes on calibers from 22 to 30 cal. Clarity is good enough to watch the bullet trace from a 22lr hit paper at 100 yards at 24x and see all of the bullet holes. Clarity further out is still quite good as well. I highly recommend them. |
