Depending on the attachment mechanism you use on the cross bars, their is a bolt inside the ski racks so that when the ski rack is locked the bolt can't be reached and thus the ski rack can't be removed. I use the old style round bar attachment pieces. If you have the other types of cross bar attachments, what I have noticed is that there is a hex screw that locks the attachment mechanism onto the crossbar.

Although I don't have access to the source of information about its weight, I'd say maybe 10 pounds. 85 pounds may be the load capacity. I love the basket and chauffeur my 25-pound Scottish Terrier around in it.

They have a K-3 (for ages 4-10)and a Kompact (11-young adult) and Kompact R (made for rough terrain) that is for people under 5ft. They carry many different models...even for little kids, teens and adults. However, these bikes are expensive and you will have to purchase through a bike store or online bike store like Utah Trikes.
